Introduction: The overeruption of upper molars due to the premature loss of antagonist teeth can be treated with the help of miniscrews. The aim of this study was to evaluate the movement of a typodont molar according to the biomechanical approach used with miniscrews. Study design: The study was conducted with four plaster models filled with typodont wax. In each model we used one absolute anchorage on the palatal side and another on the buccal side in different positions, thus generating four different biomechanical systems. A force of 150 g was applied to each side of the resin tooth. Periapical radiographs were taken preintrusion and immediately after completion of the intrusion. Photographs were taken in both the sagittal and occlusal planes every 3 min. The radiographic films and photographs were measured and compared. Results: A vertical movement of the molar was observed in all the models, with system 4 showing the greatest movement. Rotation in the occlusal plane only occurred in system 2, while in system 1 there was a change in the axial axis of 37 degrees. Conclusions: The anchorage site and the combination of forces applied may determine the resulting tooth movement

Turning biases have been associated with unbalanced hemispheric dopaminergic activity, and this activity has been correlated with cue-directed behaviors. Moreover, a sexual differentiation in hippocampal dopaminergic receptors following learning has been shown. In humans, pointing responses towards the starting point is commonly used to assess the accuracy of direction estimation after locomotion. Thus, it may be of interest for the field of spatial cognition to explore human sex differences in spontaneous turning bias when a body rotation is required. To this end, male and female blindfolded subjects were guided in a linear displacement and asked to rotate in order to point in the direction of the starting position. The main finding was a massive difference between men and women. 80% of women showed a turning bias to the right when 69% of men showed a bias to the left. Moreover, these preferences were not correlated with handedness. These results suggest basic preferences associated to sex might influence male and female performance in spatial cognition. They also suggest experimental procedures may be biased in favor of male or female strategies. Therefore, such preferences should be considered in order to gain further insight into the development of more balanced procedures.

The dynamic behavior of the decondensed chromatin can be monitored by real-time fluorescence confocal microscopy. It can be observed that different chromosomal sites enjoy different degrees of freedom during a certain period, exploring larger or smaller portions of nuclear volume. Here we measure the accessible surface for two chromosomal sites (yeast telomeres Tel3R and Tel6R) that both exhibit strong preferential association with the nuclear membrane in galactose-containing media, but differ significantly in gene activity. Telomere Tel6R, which harbors an inducible gene with high levels of transcription, explores a much larger surface than the telomere Tel3R, which is adjacent to inactive chromatin. Thus, our results distinguish two perinuclear movements characteristic of different transcriptional state, allowing for a better understanding of the correlation between activity of genes and chromatin dynamics.

Closing talk of the Open Access Week 2011 at the UOC, by Josep Jover. Why do altruistic strategies beat selfish ones in the spheres of both free software and the #15m movement? The #15m movement, like software but unlike tangible goods, cannot be owned. It can be used (by joining it) by an indeterminate number of people without depriving anyone else of the chance to do the same. And that turns everything on its head: how universities manage information and what their mission is in this new society. In the immediate future, universities will be valued not for the information they harbour, which will always be richer and more extensive beyond their walls, but rather for their capacity to create critical masses, whether of knowledge research, skill-building, or networks of peers... universities must implement the new model or risk becoming obsolete.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Traditionally, sleep studies in mammals are performed using electroencephalogram/electromyogram (EEG/EMG) recordings to determine sleep-wake state. In laboratory animals, this requires surgery and recovery time and causes discomfort to the animal. In this study, we evaluated the performance of an alternative, noninvasive approach utilizing piezoelectric films to determine sleep and wakefulness in mice by simultaneous EEG/EMG recordings. The piezoelectric films detect the animal's movements with high sensitivity and the regularity of the piezo output signal, related to the regular breathing movements characteristic of sleep, serves to automatically determine sleep. Although the system is commercially available (Signal Solutions LLC, Lexington, KY), this is the first statistical validation of various aspects of sleep. DESIGN: EEG/EMG and piezo signals were recorded simultaneously during 48 h. SETTING: Mouse sleep laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Nine male and nine female CFW outbred mice. INTERVENTIONS: EEG/EMG surgery. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: The results showed a high correspondence between EEG/EMG-determined and piezo-determined total sleep time and the distribution of sleep over a 48-h baseline recording with 18 mice. Moreover, the piezo system was capable of assessing sleep quality (i.e., sleep consolidation) and interesting observations at transitions to and from rapid eye movement sleep were made that could be exploited in the future to also distinguish the two sleep states. CONCLUSIONS: The piezo system proved to be a reliable alternative to electroencephalogram/electromyogram recording in the mouse and will be useful for first-pass, large-scale sleep screens for genetic or pharmacological studies. The objective of this work was to evaluate the spatial distribution of thrips in different crops, and the correlation between meterological parameters and the flight movements of this pest, using immunomarking. The experiment was conducted in cultivated areas, with tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), potato (Solanum tuberosum), and onion (Allium cepa); and non-cultivated areas, with weedy plants. The areas with tomato (100 days), potato (20 days), and weeds were sprayed with casein, albumin, and soy milk, respectively, to mark adult thrips; however, the areas with onion (50 days) and tomato (10 days) were not sprayed. Thrips were captured with georeferenced blue sticky traps, transferred into tubes, and identified by treatment area with the Elisa test. The dependence between the samples and the capture distance was determined using geostatistics. Meteorlogical parameters were correlated with thrips density in each area. The three protein types used for immunomarking were detected in different proportions in the thrips. There was a correlation between casein-marked thrips and wind speed. The thrips flew a maximum distance of 3.5 km and dispersed from the older (tomato) to the younger crops (potato). The immunomarking method is efficient to mark large quantities of thrips.

OPINION STATEMENT: The diagnosis and appropriate treatment of hyperkinetic movement disorders require a work up of potentially reversible metabolic, infectious and structural disorders as well as side effects of current medication. In pharmacoresistant movement disorders with a disabling impact on quality of life, deep brain stimulation (DBS) should be considered. At different targets, DBS has become an established therapy for Parkinson's disease (GPi-STN), tremor (VIM) and primary dystonia (GPi) with reasonable perioperative risks and side effects, established guidelines and some clinical and radiological predictive factors. In contrast, for other hyperkinetic movement disorders, including secondary dystonia, Gilles de la Tourette, chorea and ballism, only few data are available. Definite targets are not well defined, and reported results are of less magnitude than those of the recognized indications. In this expanding therapeutical field without worked out recommendations, an individual approach is needed with DBS indication assessment only after rigorous multidisciplinary scrutiny, restricted to expert centres.
