In order to have a better understanding of the role of the structure and the defects involved in the polarization processes in an 85TeO(2)-15Na(2)O mol% glass, we used the thermally stimulated depolarization currents (TSDC technique). The TSDC of the non-irradiated sample presented a strong negative peak of current at the temperature of 340 K, preceded by a relatively weak positive peak at about 300 K. after different d.c. voltages of 1200, 1500 and 2000 V were applied. No response was obtained with 1000 V. but the peak intensity increased considerably for voltages above 1200 V. After gamma-irradiation of 25 and 50 KGy doses, a depolarization of the negative peak was observed in the sample submitted to 25 KGy, whereas for the sample irradiated with 50 KGy, six TSDC peaks appeared at regular intervals of 5 KGy, in the temperature range of 100 and 300 K. This article describes the microstructure and dynamics in the solid state of polyfluorene-based polymers, poly(9,)-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl) (PFO), a semicrystalline polymer, and poly [(9,9-dioctyl- 2,7-divinylene-fluorenylene)-alt-co-{2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)- 1,4-phenylene vinylene}, a copolymer with mesomorphic phase properties. These Structures were determined by wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) measurements, Assuming a packing model for the copolymer structure, where the planes of the phenyl rings are stacked and separated by an average distance of similar to 4.5 angstrom and laterally spaced by about similar to 16 angstrom, we followed the evolution of these distances as a function of temperature using WAXS and associated the changes observed to the polymer relaxation processes identified by dynamical mechanical thermal analysis. Specific molecular motions were studied by solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance. The onset of the side-chain motion at about 213 K (beta-relaxation) produced a small increase in the lateral spacing and in the stacking distance of the phenyl rings in them aggregated Structures, Besides, at about 383 K (alpha-relaxation) there occurs a significant increase in the amplitude of the torsion motion in the backbone, producing a greater increase in the stacking distance of the phenyl rings. Similar results were observed in the semicrystalline phase of PFO, but in this case the presence of the crystalline structure affects considerably the overall dynamics, which tends to be more hindered. Put together, Our data explain many features of the temperature dependence of the photoluminescence of these two polymers.

Impedance spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used to investigate the mobility of water molecules located in the interlayer space of H(+) - exchanged bentonite clay. The conductivity obtained by ac measurements was 1.25 x 10(-4) S/cm at 298 K. Proton ((1)H) lineshapes and spin-lattice relaxation times were measured as a function of temperature over the temperature range 130-320 K. The NMR experiments exhibit the qualitative features associated with the proton motion, namely the presence of a (1)H NMR line narrowing and a well-defined spin-lattice relaxation rate maximum. The temperature dependence of the proton spin-lattice relaxation rates was analyzed with the spectral density function appropriate for proton dynamics in a two-dimensional system. The self-diffusion coefficient estimated from our NMR data, D similar to 2 x 10(-7) cm(2)/s at 300 K, is consistent with those reported for exchanged montmorillonite clay hydrates studied by NMR and quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QNS).

New results are established here on the phase portraits and bifurcations of the kinematic model in system (1), first presented by H.K. Wilson in [3], and by him attributed to L. Markus (unpublished). A new, self-sufficient, study which extends that of [3] and allows an essential conclusion for the applicability of the model is reported here.

Electrical conductivity and H-1 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) techniques were used to investigate the ion-exchanged layered lead-niobate perovskite HPb2Nb3O10. nH(2)O, over the temperature range 90-350 K. Compounds were synthesized by the sol-gel method and calcinated at 650 degreesC. Analysis of the NMR data gives activation energies for the proton motion in the range 0.14-0.40 eV, which are dependent on the water content. The frequency and temperature dependencies of the proton spin-lattice relaxation times show that the character of the motion of the: water molecules is essentially two-dimensional, reflecting the layered structure of the material. The H-1 line-narrowing transition and the single spin-lattice relaxation rate maximum, observed in the hydrated compounds, are consistent with a Grotthuss-like mechanism for the proton diffusion. The dynamics of a pair of satellites similar to Enceladus-Dione is investigated with a two-degrees-of-freedom model written in the domain of the planar general three-body problem. Using surfaces of section and spectral analysis methods, we study the phase space of the system in terms of several parameters, including the most recent data. A detailed study of the main possible regimes of motion is presented, and in particular we show that, besides the two separated resonances, the phase space is replete of secondary resonances.

The study of the influence of motion and initial intra-articular pressure (IAP) on intra-articular pressure profiles in equine cadaver metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joints was undertaken as a prelude to in vivo studies, Eleven equine cadaver MTP joints were submitted to 2 motion frequencies of 5 and 10 cycles/min of flexion and extension, simulating the condition of lower and higher (double) rates of passive motion. These frequencies were applied and pressure profiles generated with initial normal intra-articular pressure (-5 mmHg) and subsequently 30 mmHg intra-articular pressure obtained by injection of previously harvested synovial fluid. The 4 trials performed were 1) normal IAP; 5 cyles/min; 2) normal IAP; 10 cycles/min; 3) IAP at 30 mmHg; 5 cycles/min and 4) IAP at 30 mmHg; 10 cycles/min. The range of joint motion applied (mean +/- s.e.) was 67.6 +/- 1.61 degrees with an excursion from 12.2 +/- 1.2 degrees in extension to 56.2 +/- 2.6 degrees in flexion, Mean pressure recorded in mmHg for the first and last min of each trial, respectively, were 1) -5.7 +/- 0.9 and -6.3 +/- 1.1; 2) -5.3 +/- 1.1 and -6.2 +/- 1.1; 3) 58.8 +/- 8.0 and 42.3 +/- 7.2; 4) 56.6 +/- 3.7 and 40.3 +/- 4.6. Statistical analyses showed a trend for difference between the values for the first and last minute in trial 3 (0.05>P<0.1) with P = 0.1 and significant difference (P = 0.02) between the mean IAP of the first and last min in trial 4. The loss of intra-articular pressure associated with time and motion was 10.5, 16.9, 28.1 and 28.9% for trials 1-4, respectively. As initial intraarticular pressure and motion increased, the percent loss of intra-articular pressure increased. The angle of lowest pressure was 12.2 +/- 1.2
NMR study of ion-conducting organic-inorganic nanocomposites poly(ethylene glycol) - Silica - LiClO4
Resumo:
Hybrid organic-inorganic ionic conductors, also called ormolytes, were obtained by dissolution of LiClO4 into silica/poly(ethylene glycol) matrices. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) was used to probe the inorganic phase structure (Si-29) and the effects of the temperature and composition on the dynamic behavior of the ionic species (Li-7) and the polymer chains (H-1 and C-13). The NMR results between -100 and +90 degrees C show a strong correlation with ionic conductivity and differential scanning calorimetry experiments. The results also demonstrate that the cation mobility is assisted by segmental motion of the polymer, which is in agreement with the results previously reported for pure poly(ethylene oxide), PEG, electrolytes.

The goals of this study were to examine the visual information influence on body sway as a function of self- and object-motion perception and visual information quality. Participants that were aware (object-motion) and unaware (self-motion) of the movement of a moving room were asked to stand upright at five different distances from its frontal wall. The visual information effect on body sway decreased when participants were aware about the sensory manipulation. Moreover, while the visual influence on body sway decreased as the distance increased in the self-motion perception, no effects were observed in the object-motion mode. The overall results indicate that postural control system functioning can be altered by prior knowledge, and adaptation due to changes in sensory quality seem to occur in the self- but not in the object-motion perception mode.
