Modular distributed manufacturing systems and the implications for integrated control

Driven by the need for more responsive manufacturing processes and as a consequence of increasing complexity in products and production systems, this short paper introduces a number of developments in the area of modular, distributed manufacturing systems. Requirements for the development of such systems are addressed and, in particular, the relevance to current and future integrated control systems is examined. One of the key issues for integrated control systems in the future is the need to provide support for distributed decision-making in addition to existing distributed control capabilities.

Towards a modular toolkit for strategic technology management

Many strategic technology management methods and tools have been proposed and deployed by academics and practitioners. Each approach, with its advantages and disadvantages, provides a particular perspective for supporting understanding, analysis, decision and action. Many approaches overlap in function, the interfaces with other methods are not clear, and many variants of tools are often available with little guidance provided for their application. As a step towards the construction of a flexible toolkit for supporting strategic technology management, this paper sets out a workshop-based approach that comprises functional modules that can be combined to address a range of management challenges. Dynamic programming solutions for decentralized state-feedback LQG problems with communication delays

This paper presents explicit solutions for a class of decentralized LQG problems in which players communicate their states with delays. A method for decomposing the Bellman equation into a hierarchy of independent subproblems is introduced. Using this decomposition, all of the gains for the optimal controller are computed from the solution of a single algebraic Riccati equation. © 2012 AACC American Automatic Control Council).
