Ecosystem study Altenwoerth: impacts of a hydroelectric power-station on the River Danube in Austria

The aim of this article is to briefly describe the effects of the Altenwoerth Barrage, on the River Danube, on some physical variables and their consequent effects on water chemistry and the biota of the river. The methods used for biological sampling are summarised, especially those used in the limnological part of the study, and the macroinvertebrate and fish fauna listed. Comparisons are then made between the impounded section of river immediately above the dam and two unimpounded free-flowing sections of the river. Further developments on the Danube are considered.

The distribution of native and introduced species of crayfish in Austria

This account concentrates on the six species of crayfish found in Austria, and the current state of knowledge on their distribution and laws affecting conservation. In general the occurrence and distribution of crayfish in Austria is poorly known, although information obtained by researchers and the general public, after careful checking, is increasing. Three native crayfish species occur in Austria: Austropotamobius torrentium which is relatively widespread, A. pallipes with a restricted distribution, and Astacus astacus which is widespread. Three species of non-native (alien) crayfish have been recorded from a total of 158 localities in Austria. They are Astacus leptodactylus from eastern Europe, and two Nearctic species: Pacifastacus leniusculus and Orconectes limosus. The introduction of alien species causes considerable problems as they act as vectors of crayfish plague and are able to outcompete native species by higher reproductive capacities.

Análisis del mercado eléctrico EPEX SPOT (Austria, Alemania, Suiza, Francia)

El objetivo de este trabajo es analizar el mercado EPEX Spot, con el fin de ver si mediante la integración de mercados se consigue converger los precios de la electricidad de Francia, Alemania, Suiza y Austria. En primer lugar se hará una breve descripción del proceso de liberalización llevado a cabo por los países que forman este mercado. A continuación, se introducirá EPEX Spot explicando el funcionamiento y los tipos de mercados que contiene. En la tercera sección se definirá el proceso de la armonización del mercado europeo. Por último, se hará un análisis más exhaustivo de la estructura de mercado de cada país y se examinará la evolución de los precios.

Comparative drift studies on streams in lower Austria (Flysch, gneiss and chalk formations) [Translation from: Schweizerische Zeitschrift fur Hydrobiologie 30 138-185, 1968.]

Seasonal changes and flooding have an extraordinarily great influence on the drift of organisms. The free water space plays the main part in the provision of food for some fish (Salmo trutta - trout): drift and content of the stomach are balanced here (Simuliidae): whereas others (Thymallus vulgaris) only selectively chose certain animals living at the bottom (molluscs). The total drift, drift of organisms and drift of organic material and minerals, plays a main role in the rate of production in streams. Besides the biology of the organisms living on the river bed, also the geological and hydrographical situation of the area plays a very important role for the composition of the drift. During the years 1964-1966 three streams in the characteristical geological formations flysch, gneiss and chalk of lower Austria were studied in regard to their drift. The Tulln (above St. Christopen), the Krems (above Senftenberg) and the Schwarza (above Hirschwang) seemed to be ideal for this comparative study because they are easy to reach. After summarising the hydrography and chemistry of examined rivers, the author examines the relationship between water level and total drift and the stratification of the total drift before analysing the drift of living organisms. Also considered are seasonal changes of drift of organisms and drift of exuviae.

Thermodynamic and kinetic behavior of an argon plasma jet. Decomposition of nitric oxide between 1300 - 1750 degrees K in an argon plasma

In the first part of the study, an RF coupled, atmospheric pressure, laminar plasma jet of argon was investigated for thermodynamic equilibrium and some rate processes.

Improved values of transition probabilities for 17 lines of argon I were developed from known values for 7 lines. The effect of inhomogeneity of the source was pointed out.

The temperatures, T, and the electron densities, n_e , were determined spectroscopically from the population densities of the higher excited states assuming the Saha-Boltzmann relationship to be valid for these states. The axial velocities, v_z, were measured by tracing the paths of particles of boron nitride using a three-dimentional mapping technique. The above quantities varied in the following ranges: 10¹² ˂ n_e ˂ 10¹⁵ particles/cm³, 3500 ˂ T ˂ 11000 °K, and 200 ˂ v_z ˂ 1200 cm/sec.

The absence of excitation equilibrium for the lower excitation population including the ground state under certain conditions of T and n_e was established and the departure from equilibrium was examined quantitatively. The ground state was shown to be highly underpopulated for the decaying plasma.

Rates of recombination between electrons and ions were obtained by solving the steady-state equation of continuity for electrons. The observed rates were consistent with a dissociative-molecular ion mechanism with a steady-state assumption for the molecular ions.

In the second part of the study, decomposition of NO was studied in the plasma at lower temperatures. The mole fractions of NO denoted by x_NO were determined gas-chromatographically and varied between 0.0012 ˂ x_NO ˂ 0.0055. The temperatures were measured pyrometrically and varied between 1300 ˂ T ˂ 1750°K. The observed rates of decomposition were orders of magnitude greater than those obtained by the previous workers under purely thermal reaction conditions. The overall activation energy was about 9 kcal/g mol which was considerably lower than the value under thermal conditions. The effect of excess nitrogen was to reduce the rate of decomposition of NO and to increase the order of the reaction with respect to NO from 1.33 to 1.85. The observed rates were consistent with a chain mechanism in which atomic nitrogen and oxygen act as chain carriers. The increased rates of decomposition and the reduced activation energy in the presence of the plasma could be explained on the basis of the observed large amount of atomic nitrogen which was probably formed as the result of reactions between excited atoms and ions of argon and the molecular nitrogen.

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.

[ES] La iglesia de Santa María tiene una planta de unos 22x18 metros y cuenta con tres pórticos (sur, oeste y norte) así como una espadaña exenta. Adyacente al sudeste se encuentra la ermita de Santa Lucía. Las excavaciones arqueológicas de dos zonas de unos 6 x 3 metros en el interior y el exterior de la iglesia sirven como hilo conductor a las jornadas de puertas abiertas al público.

"Substituir a revolução dos homens pela revolução do tempo" : uma história do conceito de povo no Brasil ; revolução e historicização da linguagem política (1750-1870)

A tese propõe uma linha de interpretação acerca da história do conceito de povo no debate político luso-brasileiro entre a segunda metade do século XVIII e últimas décadas do século XIX, sob uma perspectiva teórica que busca compreender o processo de historicização das linguagens e conceitos políticos como marca do mundo moderno. Procuramos traçar o processo de abalo e desmantelamento dos significados e usos tradicionais e a incorporação crescente da temporalidade histórica na semântica conceitual, fenômeno ocorrido em meio aos conflitos e debates políticos durante a formação, consolidação e crise do estado imperial brasileiro. Acreditamos que nestes anos houve uma acentuada historicizaçao do conceito de povo, processo que teve como marca seu crescente contingenciamento, isto é, sua maior fundamentação em diagnósticos da situação histórica presente, e também sua maior inserção em visões processuais e futuristas da história.
