Reprodução e morfologia de Haddadus binotatus (Spix, 1824) (Anura, Craugastoridae) no litoral do Estado de São Paulo

Haddadus binotatus é uma espécie endêmica de Mata Atlântica e ocorre desde o sul de Pernambuco até o Rio Grande do Sul. Apesar da sua ampla distribuição pouco se conhece da história natural dessa espécie. Haddadus binotatus apresenta desenvolvimento direto e ovos são depositados sob a serapilheira ou sob troncos caídos. Há dimorfismo sexual, sendo as fêmeas maiores do que os machos. O objetivo desse estudo é conhecer os padrões reprodutivos de populações de H. binotatus no continente e em ilhas do litoral do estado de São Paulo. Os objetivos específicos são: 1) avaliar as diferenças morfológicas entre populações de H. binotatus entre ilhas e entre ilhas-continente, 2) avaliar se há dimorfismo sexual em cada população, e 3) comparar os padrões reprodutivos entre populações insulares e continentais. Neste estudo, foram utilizados exemplares de H. binotatus, depositados na coleção de Anfíbios (CFBH), do departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências, UNESP, Campus de Rio Claro. Os exemplares são provenientes de uma localidade no continente (São Sebastião) e três ilhas (Couves, Queimada Grande e Ilhabela). Os exemplares provenientes das ilhas, com exceção daqueles da Ilha das Couves, foram maiores do que os da Juréia. Houve dimorfismo sexual em todas as populações, sendo as fêmeas maiores. As populações insulares apresentam número de ovócitos menor do que a população do continente (Juréia). O número de ovócitos semelhante aos da população da Juréia foi registrado para uma população em Minas Gerais, reforçando o padrão de que populações insulares têm desovas menores. No entanto, não houve diferença no tamanho dos ovos. As diferenças encontradas para as populações insulares podem ser resultado de recursos mais limitados como espaço e alimento, pelo tamanho das presas e/ou ausência de predadores. Índices climáticos e infestação predial por larvas de Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus, 1762) e Aedes albopictus (Skuse, 1894) em Araçatuba-sp Brasil

Aedes is synanthropic; associated with climatic conditions and urban environment. This study performed a retrospective evaluation of the climatic indices and the A. aeypti and A. albopictus infestation larvae rates (IP), registered from the month of October, 2005 to 2009, in the Araçatuba city, São Paulo State. There was no variation in the average temperature in the period (26.3°C). The rain falls were high in 2005 (133.5 mm3 ) fell in 2006, 2007 and 2008 (55.0 mm3 , 78.5 mm3 and 79.0 mm3 , respectively) and increased in 2009 (104.0 mm3 ). The infestation IP was 1.10, 1.39, 0.36, 0.28 and 3.30, respectively in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009, none of them were A. albopictus larvae. There was no association between IP and temperature, but there was significant difference (P <0.001) between the IP of 2009, with the IP of 2007 and 2008. This study it was concluded that among the environmental factors just rain influenced the rate of larvae, "infestation", committed only by A. aegypti.

'Beheading', Rule Manipulation and Fraud: The Approval of Election Results in Brazil, 1894-1930

Studies of electoral fraud tend to focus their analyses only on the pre-electoral or electoral phases. By examining the Brazilian First Republic (1889-1930), this article shifts the focus to a later phase, discussing a particular type of electoral fraud that has been little explored by the literature, namely, that perpetrated by the legislatures themselves during the process of giving final approval to election results. The Brazilian case is interesting because of a practice known as degola ('beheading') whereby electoral results were altered when Congress decided on which deputies to certify as duly elected. This has come to be seen as a widespread and standard practice in this period. However, this article shows that this final phase of rubber-stamping or overturning election results was important not because of the number of degolas, which was actually much lower than the literature would have us believe, but chiefly because of their strategic use during moments of political uncertainty. It argues that the congressional certification of electoral results was deployed as a key tool in ensuring the political stability of the Republican regime in the absence of an electoral court.

Contribution to the biology and fishery of the deep-water red crab, Chaceon Affinis (A. Milne-Edwards & Bouvier, 1894) (Decapoda, Brachyura, Geryonidae) in deep waters of the Canary Islands (Central-East Atlantic)

[EN] This crab was captured in the whole range of depths sampled, although its highest abundance was found between 600 and 800 m, on muddy-rocky bottoms. Moreover, significant differences were observed in the average weight and length, according to depth of capture, island of origin, and date of survey. In general, the b parameter of length-weight relationship indicates a negative allometric growth pattern, although in some cases it was not statistically different from isometry, particularly in males. Males were heavier, larger, and more abundant in catches than females.

L'Occidente di Elisée Reclus: l'invenzione dell'Europa nella Nouvelle Géographie Universelle (1876-1894)

La Nouvelle Géographie Universelle di Élisée Reclus relativizza e problematizza il ruolo dell’Europa e il suo peso nello scacchiere mondiale, restando tuttavia in equilibrio fra, da una parte, la critica delle pratiche coloniali e dall’altra la fiducia nei confronti della tradizione culturale proveniente dall’antica Grecia e dal secolo de Lumi destinata, nella visione evoluzionista dell’autore, a spargere negli altri continenti i germi del pensiero socialista e anarchico. In questo lavoro si cerca di chiarire questa rappresentazione dei concetti di Europa e Occidente in tre passaggi successivi. Dapprima, la ricostruzione della genealogia, della teoria e del contesto storico del concetto di geografia universale all’epoca. Poi, la ricostruzione dalle fonti di archivio delle reti scientifiche di respiro europeo che sono state alla base di quest’opera, indispensabile per poterne comprendere il significato politico nel contesto dell’epoca. Infine, l’indagine sul testo per ricostruire ruolo, caratteri e suddivisione dell’Europa, che si rivela, nonostante la serrata critica del suo ruolo colonizzatore, come il privilegiato laboratorio individuato dai “geografi anarchici” per lo sviluppo delle lotte sociali e per la costruzione, su basi anche geografiche, di una proposta politica federalista e libertaria.

Imported diphyllobothriasis in Switzerland: molecular evidence of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum (Nitsch, 1824)

We report for the first time in Switzerland a clinical case because of Diphyllobothrium dendriticum, identified by molecular methods. We discuss the potential for this imported species to infect local intermediate hosts and thus to achieve autochthonous cyclic transmission.
