Eletronicalceramics are used in many applications such as: multilayer capacitor, transducer, pyroelectric sensors and electrooptic devices. In recent years there has been a growing demand for eletronicalceramics with better performance and functionality. This demand has accelerated the development of synthesis techniques to produce powders with well-defined particle size, shape and crystallinity. The eletronicalceramics in the form of bulk are determined by their performance characteristics of the powders used and the preparation process. So, physical and chemical properties of powders, such as chemical control of stoichiometry, purity, homogeneity, particle size and shape should be observed when choosing the methods of synthesis. Among the techniques used so far, the polymeric precursor method, also known as Pechini, has been considered ideal for the preparation of nanosized powders. Thus, this research project aims to use the polymeric precursor method to prepare powders of lithium tantalate and lanthanum tantalate, with good chemical stability. In this aspect is proposed to investigate the effects of variation of the concentration of europium about the properties of tantalate because doping with Eu3 + indicates that they may occupy different sites in the crystal structure, as in the case of LiTaO3. Effects of things like occupation sites, stability of phases and formation temperature have been previously investigated by the group, which motivated the formulation of this project. Our proposal aims to introduce the Eu3 + LaTaO4 and LiTaO3 and study the structural and optical properties of the powders obtained by Pechini method, as well as correlate these studies with the electrical properties of the material, mainly the Ironelectricty Hysteresis.

This paper aims the preparation, characterization and study of luminescence, particularly as for the cerium ion action as activator or sensitizer, in diphenylphosphinate of lanthanum compounds trivalent ions cerium-, europium-, and/or terbium-doped. The following compounds were prepared and studied: i) La1-(x+y)CexEuy(DFF)3; ii) La1-(x+y)CexTby(DFF)3; iii) La1-(x+y+z)CexEuyTbz(DFF)3, with x = 10%, y = 5% e z = 5%. The diphenylphosphinate of lanthanum, Ln[(Ph2)PO2]3, are complexes obtained by the mixture of lanthanides chlorides with diphenylphosphinic acid, ethanol medium. These compounds make white powders, crystalline, insoluble in normal temperature and pressure, and are chemically and thermally stable. When doping with Ce3+, Eu3+ and/or Tb3+, the compounds present characteristic luminescence. Luminescent materials are made of a host matrix incorporated with few amounts of ions called activators, which are able to present luminescence after being excited by UV light or high energy radiation, and sensitizer ions, which have the role of absorbing excitation energy and transfer it to the activator, for it to emit luminescence radiation. The infrared vibrational spectroscopy indicates that the coordination occurs by the oxygens of phosphorile group with ΔνPO of about 40 cm-1 compared to the free ligand. The X Ray difractograms of compounds Eu- and/or Tb-doped are similar, but they present profile of diffraction different observed by Stucchi and col. In previous papers, indicated an influence of Ce in the crystalline phase formation of these matrices. In luminescence spectrums, the excitation that can be made by the levels of ligand in 273 nm, or cerium ion in area between 300 and 400 nm were observed. In the emission spectrum, with excitation in 273 nm, is possible to observe the emission of Ce3+ below 400 nm and the Eu3+ in 592, 611 and 617 nm, and the...as a sensitizer to.

The interaction of the cationic meso-tetrakis 4-N-methylpyridyl porphyrin (TMPyP) with large unilamellar vesicles (LUVs) was investigated in the present study. LUVs were formed by mixtures of the zwitterionic 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-phosphatidylcholine (DPPC) and anionic 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoglycerol (DPPG) phospholipids, at different DPPG molar percentages. All investigations were carried out above (50 degrees C) and below (25 degrees C) the main phase transition temperature of the LUVs (similar to 41 degrees C). The binding constant values, K-b, estimated from the time-resolved fluorescence study, showed a significant increase of the porphyrin affinity at higher mol% DPPG. This affinity is markedly increased when the LUVs are in the liquid crystalline state. For both situations, the increase of the K-b value was also followed by a higher porphyrin fraction bound to the LUVs. The displacement of the vesicle-bound porphyrins toward the aqueous medium, upon titration with the salt potassium chloride (KCl), was also studied. Altogether, our steady-state and frequency-domain fluorescence quenching data results indicate that the TMPyP is preferentially located at the LUVs Stern layer. This is supported by the zeta potential studies, where a partial neutralization of the LUVs surface charge, upon porphyrin titration, was observed. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) results showed that, for some phospholipid systems, this partial neutralization leads to the LUVs flocculation. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The knowledge of electronic and local structures is a fundamental step towards understanding the properties of ferroelectric ceramics. X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) of Pb1-xLaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 ferroelectric samples was measured in order to know how the local order and electronic structure are related to their ferroelectric property, which was tailored by the substitution of lead by lanthanum atoms. The analysis of XANES spectra collected at Ti K- and L-edges XANES showed that the substitution of Pb by La leads to a decrement of local distortion around Ti atoms on the TiO6 octahedron. The analysis of O K-edge XANES spectra showed that the hybridization between O 2p and Pb 6sp states is related to the displacement of Ti atoms in the TiO6 octahedra. Based on these results, it is possible to determine that the degree of ferroelectricity in these samples and the manifestation of relaxor behavior are directly related to the weakening of O 2p and Pb 6sp hybridization. The catalytic performance of Ni/ZrO2 catalysts loaded with different lanthanum content for steam reforming of ethanol was investigated. Catalysts were characterized by BET surface area, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, temperature programmed reduction, and X-ray absorption fine structure techniques. Results showed that lanthanum addition led to an increase in the degree of reduction of both NiO and nickel surface species interacting with the support, due to the higher dispersion effect. The best catalytic performance at 450 ºC was found for the Ni/12LZ catalyst, which exhibited an effluent gaseous mixture with the highest H2 yield.

TRPV6 belongs to the vanilloid family of the transient receptor potential channel (TRP) superfamily. This calcium-selective channel is highly expressed in the duodenum and the placenta, being responsible for calcium absorption in the body and fetus. Previous observations have suggested that TRPV6 is not only permeable to calcium but also to other divalent cations in epithelial tissues. In this study, we tested whether TRPV6 is indeed also permeable to cations such as zinc and cadmium. We found that the basal intracellular calcium concentration was higher in HEK293 cells transfected with hTRPV6 than in non-transfected cells, and that this difference almost disappeared in nominally calcium-free solution. Live cell imaging experiments with Fura-2 and NewPort Green DCF showed that overexpression of human TRPV6 increased the permeability for Ca(2+), Ba(2+), Sr(2+), Mn(2+), Zn(2+), Cd(2+), and interestingly also for La(3+) and Gd(3+). These results were confirmed using the patch clamp technique. (45)Ca uptake experiments showed that cadmium, lanthanum and gadolinium were also highly efficient inhibitors of TRPV6-mediated calcium influx at higher micromolar concentrations. Our results suggest that TRPV6 is not only involved in calcium transport but also in the transport of other divalent cations, including heavy metal ions, which may have toxicological implications.

A total of 167 samples distubuted throughout the CRP-3 drillhole from 5.77 to 787.68 mbsf and representing fine to coarse sandstones have been analysed by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF) Bulk sample geochemistry (major and trace elements) indicates a dominant provenance of detritus from the Ferrar Supergroup in the uppermost 200 mbsf of the core. A markedly increased contribution from the Beacon sandstones is recognized below 200 mbsf and down to 600 mbsf. In the lower part of CRP-3, down to 787.68 mbsf, geochemical evidence for influxes of Ferrar materials is again recorded. On the basis of preliminary magnetostratigraphic data reported for the lower 447 mbsf of the drillhole, we tentatively evaluated the main periodicities modulating the geochemical records. Our results identify a possible influence of the precession, obliquity and long-eccentricity astronomical components (21, 41, and 400 ky frequency bands) on the deposition mechanisms of the studied glaciomarine sediments.

Geochemical data are presented for samples from strata, mainly of Miocene age, in the Cape Roberts-1 core (western McMurdo Sound, Antarctica) to assess the sediment provenance. Bulk (major and trace element) chemistry together with bulk mineralogy of fine-grained sandstones, siltstones, mudstones, and diamictites indicate that chemical alteration of source materials, fractionation due to sedimentary sorting, and diagenetic effects were not significant in the Cape Roberts sediment history. Relevant geochemical parameters are consistent with the Cape Roberts sediments being derived mainly from the crystalline basement and the Beacon Supergroup. On the basis of element distributions, an additional contribution from the Ferrar Dolerite and, mainly above about 60 m, influxes of detritus derived from basanitic to intermediate members of the McMurdo Volcanic Group are recognised.
