Background: Receipt of early prenatal care, care during the first three months of pregnancy, is the standard in the United States. Sixty percent of non-Hispanic Black women who had a live birth in the Sunnyside community of Houston did not obtain early prenatal care in 2009. ^ This study's aims were to: 1) Describe the barriers to obtaining early prenatal care in non-Hispanic Black women who live in the Sunnyside community of Houston; and, 2) Describe the actions that could encourage non-Hispanic Black women who live in the Sunnyside Community to obtain early prenatal care. The goal was to provide information to organizations that promote early prenatal care use in non-Hispanic Black women in Harris County that may aid in developing interventions. ^ Methods: The Participatory Learning for Action rapid assessment qualitative method was used in a group setting to answer the research questions on behalf of women in the community. Women who participated in the group sessions also participated in an in-depth interview. Key informants who work in the community with pregnant women, or promote the use of prenatal care services, were also interviewed. An inductive analysis of the data was conducted to identify common themes that address the study's aims. ^ Results: Aim 1: Group participants identified fear of the reaction from family and/or the baby's daddy and shame, not having insurance or money, and lack of knowledge of the pregnancy and resources as the top three barriers to early prenatal care for women in the community. Aim 2: Group participants stated that to help women to overcome these barriers, communication, awareness and support; help, resources and services; and information and early education are needed. Participant in-depth interviewees echoed the themes of fear of the reaction from family and/or the baby's daddy and not knowing of the pregnancy. Key informants mentioned these themes as well, though not at the same priority level. Participants and key informants also mentioned similar themes for helping women to overcome barriers to early prenatal care. ^ Conclusion: A comprehensive approach is needed to improve early prenatal care use in the Sunnyside community. Education efforts must include all members of the community, young and old, to promote support for pregnant women. Community members must be a part of the process for developing education campaigns. Engaging the community builds a relationship with organizations that serve the community, which may promote use of the organizations' services, and build trust with the community. All efforts must be ongoing so that women and men of all ages in the community understand the importance of prenatal care and support women obtaining care early in the pregnancy.^

Su objetivo era establecer los perfiles de comportamiento de los investigadores de la Facultadde Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educación de dicha universidad, en el uso de los recursos y fuentesde información y, en particular, su relación con la biblioteca de la Facultad. En un mercado de educación superior cada vez más competitivo, la colaboración entre universidades es una efectiva estrategia para acceder al mercado global. El desarrollo de titulaciones conjuntas es un importante mecanismo para fortalecer las colaboraciones académicas y diversificar los conocimientos. Las titulaciones conjuntas están siendo cada vez más implementadas en las universidades de todo el mundo. En Europa, el proceso de Bolonia y el programa Erasmus, están fomentado el reconocimiento de titulaciones conjuntas y dobles y promoviendo la colaboración entre las instituciones académicas. En el imparable proceso de la globalización y convergencia educativa, el uso de sistemas de e-learning para soportar cursos tanto semipresencial como online es una tendencia en crecimiento. Dado que los sistemas de e-learning soportan una amplia variedad de cursos, es necesario encontrar una solución adecuada que permita a las universidades soportar y gestionar las titulaciones conjuntas a través de sus sistemas de e-learning en conformidad con los acuerdos de colaboración establecidos por las universidades participantes. Esta tesis doctoral abordará las siguientes preguntas de investigación: 1. ¿Qué factores deben tenerse en cuenta en la implementación y gestión de titulaciones conjuntas? 2. ¿Cómo pueden los sistemas actuales de e-learning soportar el desarrollo de titulaciones conjuntas? 3. ¿Qué otros servicios y sistemas necesitan ser adaptados por las universidades interesadas en participar en una titulación conjunta a través de sus sistemas de e-learning? La implementación de titulaciones conjuntas a través de sistemas de e-learning es compleja e implica retos técnicos, administrativos, culturales, financieros, jurídicos y de seguridad. Esta tesis doctoral propone una serie de contribuciones que pueden ayudar a resolver algunos de los retos identificados. En primer lugar se ha elaborado un modelo conceptual que incluye la información del contexto de las titulaciones conjuntas que es relevante para la implementación de estas titulaciones en los sistemas de e-learning. Después de definir el modelo conceptual, se ha propuesto una arquitectura basada en políticas para la implementación de titulaciones interinstitucionales a través de sistemas de e-learning de acuerdo a los términos estipulados en los acuerdos de colaboración que son firmados por las universidades participantes. El autor se ha centrado en el componente de gestión de flujos de trabajo de esta arquitectura. Por último y con el fin de permitir la interoperabilidad de repositorios de objetos educativos, los componentes básicos a implementar han sido identificados y validados. El uso de servicios multimedia en educación es una tendencia creciente, proporcionando servicios de e-learning que permiten mejorar la comunicación y la interacción entre profesores y alumnos. Dentro de estos servicios, nos hemos centrado en el uso de la videoconferencia y la grabación de clases como servicios adecuados para el desarrollo de cursos impartidos en escenarios de educación colaborativos. Las contribuciones han sido validadas en proyectos de investigación de ámbito nacional y europeo en los que el autor ha participado. Abstract In an increasingly competitive higher education market, collaboration between universities is an effective strategy for gaining access to the global market. The development of joint degrees is an important mechanism for strengthening academic research collaborations and diversifying knowledge. Joint degrees are becoming increasingly implemented in universities around the world. In Europe, the Bologna process and the Erasmus programme have encouraged both the global recognition of joint and double degrees and promoted close collaboration between academic institutions. In the unstoppable process of globalization and educational convergence, the use of e-learning systems for supporting both blended and online courses is becoming a growing trend. Since e-learning systems covers a wide range of courses, it becomes necessary to find a suitable solution that enables universities to support and manage joint degrees through their e-learning systems in accordance with the collaboration agreements established by the universities involved. This dissertation will address the following research questions: 1. What factors need to be considered in the implementation and management of joint degrees? 2. How can the current e-learning systems support the development of joint degrees? 3. What other services and systems need to be adapted by universities interested in participating in a joint degree through their e-learning systems? The implementation of joint degrees using e-learning systems is complex and involves technical, administrative, security, cultural, financial and legal challenges. This dissertation proposes a series of contributions to help solve some of the identified challenges. One of the cornerstones of this proposal is a conceptual model of all the relevant issues related to the support of joint degrees by means of e-learning systems. After defining the conceptual model, this dissertation proposes a policy-driven architecture for implementing inter-institutional degree collaborations through e-learning systems as stipulated by a collaboration agreement signed by two universities. The author has focused on the workflow management component of this architecture. Finally, the building blocks for achieving interoperability of learning object repositories have been identified and validated. The use of multimedia services in education is a growing trend, providing rich e-learning services that improve the communication and interaction between teachers and students. Within these e-learning services, we have focused on the use of videoconferencing and lecture recording as the best-suited services to support collaborative learning scenarios. The contributions have been validated within national and European research projects that the author has been involved in.

The main objective of this article is to focus on the analysis of teaching techniques, ranging from the use of the blackboard and chalk in old traditional classes, using slides and overhead projectors in the eighties and use of presentation software in the nineties, to the video, electronic board and network resources nowadays. Furthermore, all the aforementioned, is viewed under the different mentalities in which the teacher conditions the student using the new teaching technique, improving soft skills but maybe leading either to encouragement or disinterest, and including the lack of educational knowledge consolidation at scientific, technology and specific levels. In the same way, we study the process of adaptation required for teachers, the differences in the processes of information transfer and education towards the student, and even the existence of teachers who are not any longer appealed by their work due which has become much simpler due to new technologies and the greater ease in the development of classes due to the criteria described on the new Grade Programs adopted by the European Higher Education Area. Moreover, it is also intended to understand the evolution of students’ profiles, from the eighties to present time, in order to understand certain attitudes, behaviours, accomplishments and acknowledgements acquired over the semesters within the degree Programs. As an Educational Innovation Group, another key question also arises. What will be the learning techniques in the future?. How these evolving matters will affect both positively and negatively on the mentality, attitude, behaviour, learning, achievement of goals and satisfaction levels of all elements involved in universities’ education? Clearly, this evolution from chalk to the electronic board, the three-dimensional view of our works and their sequence, greatly facilitates the understanding and adaptation later on to the business world, but does not answer to the unknowns regarding the knowledge and the full development of achievement’s indicators in basic skills of a degree. This is the underlying question which steers the roots of the presented research.

El vertiginoso avance de la informática y las telecomunicaciones en las últimas décadas ha incidido invariablemente en la producción y la prestación de servicios, en la educación, en la industria, en la medicina, en las comunicaciones e inclusive en las relaciones interpersonales. No obstante estos avances, y a pesar de la creciente aportación del software al mundo actual, durante su desarrollo continuamente se incurre en el mismo tipo de problemas que provocan un retraso sistemático en los plazos de entrega, se exceda en presupuesto, se entregue con una alta tasa de errores y su utilidad sea inferior a la esperada. En gran medida, esta problemática es atribuible a defectos en los procesos utilizados para recoger, documentar, acordar y modificar los requisitos del sistema. Los requisitos son los cimientos sobre los cuáles se construye un producto software, y sin embargo, la incapacidad de gestionar sus cambios es una de las principales causas por las que un producto software se entrega fuera de tiempo, se exceda en coste y no cumpla con la calidad esperada por el cliente. El presente trabajo de investigación ha identificado la necesidad de contar con metodologías que ayuden a desplegar un proceso de Gestión de Requisitos en pequeños grupos y entornos de trabajo o en pequeñas y medianas empresas. Para efectos de esta tesis llamaremos Small-Settings a este tipo de organizaciones. El objetivo de este trabajo de tesis doctoral es desarrollar un metamodelo que permita, por un lado, la implementación y despliegue del proceso de Gestión de Requisitos de forma natural y a bajo coste y, por otro lado, el desarrollo de mecanismos para la mejora continua del mismo. Este metamodelo esta soportado por el desarrollo herramientas que permiten mantener una biblioteca de activos de proceso para la Gestión de Requisitos y a su vez contar con plantillas para implementar el proceso partiendo del uso de activos previamente definidos. El metamodelo contempla el desarrollo de prácticas y actividades para guiar, paso a paso, la implementación del proceso de Gestión de Requisitos para una Small-Setting utilizando un modelo de procesos como referencia y una biblioteca de activos de proceso como principal herramienta de apoyo. El mantener los activos de proceso bien organizados, indexados, y fácilmente asequibles, facilita la introducción de las mejores prácticas al interior de una organización. ABSTRACT The fast growth of computer science and telecommunication in recent decades has invariably affected the provision of products and services in education, industry, healthcare, communications and also interpersonal relationships. In spite of such progress and the active role of the software in the world, its development and production continually incurs in the same type of problems that cause systematic delivery delays, over budget, a high error rate and consequently its use is lower than expected. These problems are largely attributed to defects in the processes used to identify, document, organize, and track all system's requirements. It is generally accepted that requirements are the foundation upon which the software process is built, however, the inability to manage changes in requirements is one of the principal factors that contribute to delays on the software development process, which in turn, may cause customer dissatisfaction. The aim of the present research work has identified the need for appropriate methodologies to help on the requirement management process for those organizations that are categorised as small and medium size enterprises, small groups within large companies, or small projects. For the purposes of this work, these organizations are named Small-Settings. The main goal of this research work is to develop a metamodel to manage the requirement process using a Process Asset Library (PAL) and to provide predefined tools and actives to help on the implementation process. The metamodel includes the development of practices and activities to guide step by step the deployment of the requirement management process in Small-Settings. Keeping assets organized, indexed, and readily available are a main factor to the success of the organization process improvement effort and facilitate the introduction of best practices within the organization. The Process Asset Library (PAL) will become a repository of information used to keep and make available all process assets that are useful to those who are defining, implementing, and managing processes in the organization.

El mundo de las telecomunicaciones evoluciona a gran velocidad, acorde con las necesidades de los usuarios. El crecimiento del número de servicios a través de las conexiones que actualmente utilizamos para conectarnos a Internet (Ej. IPTV) con elevados requerimientos de ancho de banda, que junto a los servicios de nuevo nacimiento (ej. OTT), contribuyen tanto al aumento de la necesidad de mayores velocidades de conexión de los usuarios como a la implantación de nuevos modelos de calidad de servicio. Las redes de datos de banda ancha (fija y móvil) actuales deben, por lo tanto, experimentar una profunda transformación para conseguir solventar de una forma eficiente los problemas y las necesidades de tráfico, pudiendo así absorber el progresivo incremento del ancho de banda, dejando las puertas abiertas a futuras mejoras. Y para ello las operadoras se nutrirán con la valiosa información de tráfico y usuario que les lleven a tomar las mejores decisiones de cara a que las transformaciones llevadas a cabo cubran exactamente lo que el usuario demanda de la forma más eficiente posible. Con estas premisas, surgieron las ideas que se plasmaron como objetivos del PFC : La idea de narrar el despliegue de la banda ancha en España desde sus orígenes hasta la actualidad, enfocando su crecimiento desde un punto de vista sociotecnológico. Dando continuidad al punto anterior, se persiguió la idea de conocer las herramientas sociales y tecnológicas a raíz de las cuales se pueda realizar una previsión del tráfico en las redes de las operadoras en un futuro cercano. La pretensión de mostrar las características de los usuarios de banda ancha y del tráfico de datos que generan, que son de carácter crítico para las operadoras en la elaboración de forma adecuada de la planificación de sus redes. La intención de revelar los procedimientos de las operadoras para que, una vez conocidas las características de sus usuarios, se puedan cumplir los requisitos demandados por los mismos: QoS y los indicadores clave de rendimiento (KPIs) Por otro lado, el nivel de detalle dado pretende adecuarse a un público que no tenga profundos conocimientos sobre la materia, y salvo partes bastante concretas, se puede catalogar este trabajo como de abierto al público en general. ABSTRACT. The world of telecommunications is evolving at high speed, according to the needs of users. The growing of services number through the connections that currently have been used to connect to the Internet (eg IPTV ) with high bandwidth requirements, which together with the new birth services (eg OTT ) contribute both to increased the need for higher connection speeds users and the implementation of new models of service quality. Data networks broadband (fixed and mobile ) today must , therefore, undergo a deep transformation to achieve an efficient solving problems and traffic needs, thus being able to absorb the gradual increase of bandwidth, leaving the door open to future improvements. And for that the operators will be nurtured with valuable information and user traffic that lead them to make better decisions in the face of the transformations carried out exactly meet the user demand for the most efficient possible way. With these assumptions, the ideas that emerged were expressed as PFC objectives : The idea of narrating the broadband deployment in Spain from its origins to the present, focusing its growth from a socio-technological approach. Continuing the previous point, it pursued the idea of knowing the social tools and technology as a result of which it can perform a traffic forecast operators networks in the near future. The attempt to show the characteristics of broadband users and data traffic they generate, which are mission critical for operators in developing adequately planning their networks. The intention to disclose procedures for operators, once known the characteristics of their users, it can meet the requirements demanded by them: QoS and key performance indicators (KPI). On the other hand, the level of detail given suit seeks an audience that does not have deep knowledge on the subject, unless quite specific parts, this work can be classified as open to the general public.

Purpose: The Shared Hospital Electronic Library of Southern Indiana (SHELSI) research project was designed to determine whether access to a virtual health sciences library and training in its use would support medical decision making in rural southern Indiana and achieve the same level of impact seen by targeted information services provided by health sciences librarians in urban hospitals.

The purpose of this study was to examine the current status of health sciences libraries in Kuwait in terms of their staff, collections, facilities, use of information technology, information services, and cooperation. Seventeen libraries participated in the study. Results show that the majority of health sciences libraries were established during the 1980s. Their collections are relatively small. The majority of their staff is nonprofessional. The majority of libraries provide only basic information services. Cooperation among libraries is limited. Survey results also indicate that a significant number of health sciences libraries are not automated. Some recommendations for the improvement of existing resources, facilities, and services are made.

Introdução: A prevalência de doenças crônicas, sobretudo na população idosa, nos coloca diante da necessidade de modelos longitudinais de cuidado. Atualmente os sujeitos estão sendo cada vez mais responsabilizados pelo gerenciamento de sua saúde através do uso de dispositivos de monitoramento, tais como o glicosímetro e o aferidor de pressão arterial. Esta nova realidade culmina na tomada de decisão no próprio domicílio. Objetivos: Identificar a tomada de decisão de idosos no monitoramento domiciliar das condições crônicas; identificar se as variáveis: sexo, escolaridade e renda influenciam a tomada de decisão; identificar a percepção dos idosos quanto às ações de cuidado no domicílio; identificar as dificuldades e estratégias no manuseio dos dispositivos de monitoramento. Materiais e métodos: Estudo quantitativo, exploratório e transversal. Casuística: 150 sujeitos com 60 anos de idade ou mais, sem comprometimento cognitivo, sem depressão e que façam uso do glicosímetro e/ou do aferidor de pressão arterial no domicílio. Instrumentos para seleção dos participantes: (1) Mini Exame do Estado Mental; (2) Escala de Depressão Geriátrica e (3) Escala de Atividades Instrumentais de Vida Diária de Lawton e Brody; Coleta de dados: realizada na cidade de Ribeirão Preto - SP entre setembro de 2014 e outubro de 2015. Instrumentos: (1) Questionário Socioeconômico; (2) Questionário sobre a tomada de decisão no monitoramento da saúde no domicílio (3) Classificação do uso de dispositivos eletrônicos voltados aos cuidados à saúde. Análise dos dados: Realizada estatística descritiva e quantificações absolutas e percentuais para identificar a relação entre tomada de decisão de acordo com o sexo, escolaridade e renda. Resultados: Participaram 150 idosos, sendo 117 mulheres e 33 homens, com média de idade de 72 anos. Destes, 113 são hipertensos e 62 são diabéticos. Quanto à tomada de decisão imediata, tanto os que fazem uso do aferidor de pressão arterial (n=128) quanto do glicosímetro (n=62) referem em sua maioria procurar ajuda médica, seguida da administração do medicamento prescrito e opções alternativas de tratamento. Em médio prazo destaca-se a procura por ajuda profissional para a maioria dos idosos em ambos os grupos. Foi notada pequena diferença na tomada de decisão com relação ao sexo. Quanto à escolaridade, os idosos com mais anos de estudos tendem a procurar mais pelo serviço de saúde se comparado aos idosos de menor escolaridade. A renda não mostrou influencia entre os usuários do glicosímetro. Já entre os usuários do aferidor de pressão arterial, idosos de maior renda tendem a procurar mais pelo serviço de saúde. A maioria dos participantes se refere ao monitoramento domiciliar da saúde de maneira positiva, principalmente pela praticidade em não sair de casa, obtenção rápida de resultados e possibilidade de controle contínuo da doença. As principais dificuldades no manuseio do glicosímetro estão relacionadas ao uso da lanceta e fita reagente, seguida da checagem dos resultados armazenados. Já as dificuldades no uso do aferidor de pressão arterial estão relacionadas a conferir o resultado após cada medida e ao posicionamento correto do corpo durante o monitoramento. Em ambos os grupos as estratégias utilizadas são pedir o auxílio de terceiros e tentativa e erro. Conclusão: Os idosos tem se mostrado favoráveis às ações de monitoramento domiciliar da saúde. De maneira geral, de imediato decidem por ações dentro do próprio domicílio para o controle dos sintomas e isto reforça a necessidade do investimento em informação de qualidade e educação em saúde para que o gerenciamento domiciliar possa vir a ser uma vertente do cuidado integral no tratamento das condições crônicas.

This article examines the U.S model of library and information science (LIS) education in light of the changes brought about by information and communication technology. The accepted model of professional preparation in the United States has emphasized graduate education on a Master’s level from LIS programs accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). The authors trace the historical development of this approach and provide an overview of the ALA accreditation process. Furthermore, they examine the strategies of LIS programs in adjusting to the changing information environment, present the debate about the iSchool movement, and discuss the evolution of the core curriculum. In addition, the article explores the relationship between LIS education and the field of practice and presents a practitioner’s perspective on educating library professionals. The authors conclude that the model of advanced professional preparation for librarianship is still relevant in the digital environment, but it requires greater flexibility and close cooperation with the field of practice.
