Frank Reynolds graduated from Brock University in 1970. While a student at Brock Mr. Reynolds was active in student life, as editor of the student newspaper and as president of the student union. He also produced other student publications, including yearbooks. In 1970 he organized the Rock at Brock, which brought various rock groups to the university campus.

Gilbert Field House research collection, 1823, 1966, 1968, n.d.

In 1968 the National Historic Sites, Dept. of Indian Affairs and Northern Development undertook to learn more about its recent acquisition, the Gilbert Field House. The house is located in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont. along the Niagara Parkway, on what was part of the original land grant to Gilbert Field, a United Empire Loyalist. The house and contents were severely damaged during the War of 1812. After the war Gilbert’s widow, Eleanor, submitted claims for war losses.

Gilbert McMicken document, n.d.

Gilbert McMicken emigrated to Upper Canada in 1832 and settled in Chippawa. In 1835 he was married to Ann Theresa Duff. In 1837 the family moved to Queenston where he was directly involved in the Kingston-Queenston trade endeavours begun by Robert Hamilton. He had a variety of interests, including a partnership with James Hamilton, son of Robert Hamilton. He was also a collector of customs in Queenston and operated the Niagara Suspension Bridge Bank for a time. He entered politics and represented Niagara as well as becoming mayor of Clifton, now part of Niagara Falls, Ont., in 1856. McMicken went on to have an illustrious career, serving as land agent and leader of Canada’s first undercover agency. McMicken moved to Manitoba and was active in business and politics. St. Catharines Standard fonds, 1970, 1974, 1988-1991, n.d.

The St. Catharines Standard started publication in 1891 under W.B. Burgoyne. It was subsequently purchased by Southam Newspapers, then Canwest Global Communications. Osprey Media took over the publication until June 1, 2007 when Quebecor acquired the company. The St. Catharines Standard celebrated its centennial in 1991 with mobile displays, a centennial logo and slogan, a Christmas card, an advertising campaign, a video and a centennial theme to regular promotions. As part of the activities, the Standard commissioned Brock University to produce a history of St. Catharines. This book entitled St. Catharines Canada’s Canal City is a popular book rather than an academic text. The authors have woven together stories of the past and present to showcase the character and personality of St. Catharines. The book is full of maps and photographs, many of which had not been seen in print before this time.

A letter from the chairman of the VQA, Donald Ziraldo, to Jacques Marie, a professor at George Brown College. The letter is dated 9 December 1988 and requests Marie as a Board Member for the newly formed VQA. The first meeting is scheduled for 19 December, 1988.
