Low power consumption per channel and data rate minimization are two key challenges which need to be addressed in future generations of neural recording systems (NRS). Power consumption can be reduced by avoiding unnecessary processing whereas data rate is greatly decreased by sending spike time-stamps along with spike features as opposed to raw digitized data. Dynamic range in NRS can vary with time due to change in electrode-neuron distance or background noise, which demands adaptability. An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) is one of the most important blocks in a NRS. This paper presents an 8-bit SAR ADC in 0.13-mu m CMOS technology along with input and reference buffer. A novel energy efficient digital-to-analog converter switching scheme is proposed, which consumes 37% less energy than the present state-of-the-art. The use of a ping-pong input sampling scheme is emphasized for multichannel input to alleviate the bandwidth requirement of the input buffer. To reduce the data rate, the A/D process is only enabled through the in-built background noise rejection logic to ensure that the noise is not processed. The ADC resolution can be adjusted from 8 to 1 bit in 1-bit step based on the input dynamic range. The ADC consumes 8.8 mu W from 1 V supply at 1 MS/s speed. It achieves effective number of bits of 7.7 bits and FoM of 42.3 fJ/conversion-step.

The Gd3+ doped Y3-xGdxFe5O12 (x=0.0, 0.05, 0.15, and 0.25) nanopowders were prepared using modified sol-gel route. The structural characterizations such as X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy has been carried out. The nanopowders were sintered at 700 degrees C/3 h. The lattice parameters and density of the samples were increased with an increase of Gd3+ concentration. The microstructure was analyzed using atomic force microscopy. The room temperature dielectric (epsilon' and epsilon `') and magnetic (mu' and mu `') properties were measured in the frequency range 5-50 GHz. with Gd3+ the dielectric properties were enhanced, but there is a decrease in the magnetic properties. The room temperature magnetization studies were carried out up to 1.5 T. the saturation and remnant magnetization were decreased with an increase of gadolinium concentration. These garnets have low permeability, low losses and a broad distribution of FMR line width which makes them a promising material for microwave devices can be used in the high frequency range i.e. up to 50 GHz. We address the problem of temporal envelope modeling for transient audio signals. We propose the Gamma distribution function (GDF) as a suitable candidate for modeling the envelope keeping in view some of its interesting properties such as asymmetry, causality, near-optimal time-bandwidth product, controllability of rise and decay, etc. The problem of finding the parameters of the GDF becomes a nonlinear regression problem. We overcome the hurdle by using a logarithmic envelope fit, which reduces the problem to one of linear regression. The logarithmic transformation also has the feature of dynamic range compression. Since temporal envelopes of audio signals are not uniformly distributed, in order to compute the amplitude, we investigate the importance of various loss functions for regression. Based on synthesized data experiments, wherein we have a ground truth, and real-world signals, we observe that the least-squares technique gives reasonably accurate amplitude estimates compared with other loss functions.

Detailed analysis of alternating current impedance data of LiMn2O4 electrodes measured at several temperatures and potentials was carried out. The Nyquist plots generally consisted of semicircles corresponding to two time constants. However, at low temperatures (-10 to 10 A degrees C) and potential region between 3.90 and 4.20 V, three time constants were present. The third semicircle present at the middle to high frequency range was attributed to electronic resistance of LiMn2O4. Impedance parameters were evaluated using appropriate electrical equivalent circuits. From the temperature dependence of resistive parameters, activation energy values for the corresponding processes were calculated.

The Sm3+ doped Y3-xSmxFe5O12 (x = 0-3) nanopowders were prepared using modified sol-gel route. The crystalline structure and morphology was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The nanopowders were sintered at 950 degrees C/90 min using microwave sintering method. The lattice parameters and density of the samples were increased with an increase of Sm3+ concentration. The room temperature dielectric (epsilon' and epsilon `') and magnetic (mu' and mu `') properties were measured in the frequency range up to 20 GHz. The room temperature magnetization studies were carried out using Vibrating sample magnetometer using filed of 1.5 T. Results of VSM show that the saturation and remnant magnetization of Y3-xSmxFe5O12 (0-3) decreases on increasing the Sm concentration (x). The low values of magnetic (mu' and mu `') properties makes them a good candidates for microwave devices, which can be operated in the high frequency range.

We report the non-enzymatic electronic detection of glucose using field effect transistor (FET) devices made of aminophenylboronic acid (APBA) functionalized reduced graphene oxide (RGO). Detection of glucose molecules was carried out over a wide dynamic range of concentration varying from 100 pM to 100 mM with a detection limit of similar to 2 nM using both covalently and non-covalently functionalized APBA-RGO complex. The normalized change in electrical conductance data shows that the FET devices made of non-covalently functionalized APBA-RGO complex (nc-APBA-RGO) exhibited a linear response to glucose aqueous solution of concentrations varying from 1 nM to 10 mM and showed 4 times enhanced sensitivity over the devices made of covalently functionalized APBA-RGO complex (c-APBA-RGO). Specificity of APBA-RGO complex to glucose is confirmed from the observation of negligible change in electrical conductance after exposure to 0.1 mM of lactose and other interfering factors. We performed numerical experiments on a one-dimensional elastic solid oscillating in a two-dimensional viscous incompressible fluid with the intent of discerning the interplay of vorticity and elastodynamics in flapping wing propulsion. Perhaps for the first time, we have established the role of foil deflection topology and its influence on vorticity generation, through spatially and temporally evolving foil slope and curvature. Though the frequency of oscillation of the foil has a definite role, it is the phase relation between foil slope and pressure that determines thrust or drag. Similarly, the phase difference between flapping velocity, and pressure and inertial forces, determine the power input to the foil, and in turn drives propulsive efficiency. At low frequencies of oscillation, the sympathetic slope and curvature of deformation of the foil allow generation of leading-edge vortices that do not separate; they cause substantial rise in pressure between the leading edge and mid-chord. The circulatory component of pressure is determined primarily by the leading-edge vortex and therefore thrust too is predominantly circulatory in origin at low frequencies. In the intermediate and high-frequency range, thrust and drag on the foil spatially alternate and non-circulatory forces dominate over circulatory and viscous forces. For the mass ratios we simulated, thrust due to flapping varies quadratically as a function of Strouhal number or trailing-edge flapping velocity; further, the trailing edge flapping velocities peak at the same set of frequencies where the thrust is also a maximum. Propulsive efficiency, on the other hand, is roughly a mirror image of the thrust variation with respect to Strouhal number. Given that most instances of flapping propulsion in nature are primarily through distributed muscular actuation that enables precise control of deformation shape, leading to high thrust and efficiency, the results presented here are pointers towards understanding some of the mechanisms that drive thrust and propulsive efficiency.

The inverse coupled dependence of electrical conductivity and thermopower on carrier concentration presents a big challenge in achieving a high figure of merit. However, the simultaneous enhancement of electrical conductivity and thermopower can be realized in practice by carefully engineering the electronic band structure. Here by taking the example of Bi2S3, we report a simultaneous increase in both electrical conductivity and thermopower under hydrostatic pressure. Application of hydrostatic pressure enables tuning of electronic structure in such a way that the conductivity effective mass decreases and the density of states effective mass increases. This dependence of effective masses leads to simultaneous enhancement in electrical conductivity and thermopower under n-type doping leading to a huge improvement in the power factor. Also lattice thermal conductivity exhibits very weak pressure dependence in the low pressure range. The large power factor together with low lattice thermal conductivity results in a high ZT value of 1.1 under n-type doping, which is nearly two times higher than the previously reported value. Hence, this pressure-tuned behaviour can enable the development of efficient thermoelectric devices in the moderate to high temperature range. We further demonstrate that similar enhancement can be observed by generating chemical pressure by doping Bi2S3 with smaller iso-electronic elements such as Sb at Bi sites, which can be achieved experimentally.

Fingerprints are used for identification in forensics and are classified into Manual and Automatic. Automatic fingerprint identification system is classified into Latent and Exemplar. A novel Exemplar technique of Fingerprint Image Verification using Dictionary Learning (FIVDL) is proposed to improve the performance of low quality fingerprints, where Dictionary learning method reduces the time complexity by using block processing instead of pixel processing. The dynamic range of an image is adjusted by using Successive Mean Quantization Transform (SMQT) technique and the frequency domain noise is reduced using spectral frequency Histogram Equalization. Then, an adaptive nonlinear dynamic range adjustment technique is utilized to determine the local spectral features on corresponding fingerprint ridge frequency and orientation. The dictionary is constructed using spatial fundamental frequency that is determined from the spectral features. These dictionaries help in removing the spurious noise present in fingerprints and reduce the time complexity by using block processing instead of pixel processing. Further, dictionaries are used to reconstruct the image for matching. The proposed FIVDL is verified on FVC database sets and Experimental result shows an improvement over the state-of-the-art techniques. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.

The optimization of off-null ellipsometry is described with emphasis on the improvement of sample thickness sensitivity. Optimal conditions are dependent on azimuth angle settings of the polarizer, compensator, and analyzer in a polarizer-compensator-sample-analyzer ellipsometer arrangement. Numerical simulation utilized offers an approach to present the dependence of the sensitivity on the azimuth angle settings, from which optimal settings corresponding to the best sensitivity are derived. For a series of samples of SiO2 layer (thickness in the range of 1.8-6.5 nm) on silicon substrate, the theory analysis proves that sensitivity at the optimal settings is increased 20 times compared to that at null settings used in most works, and the relationship between intensity and thickness is simplified as a linear type instead of the original nonlinear type, with the relative error reduced to similar to 1/100 at the optimal settings. Furthermore the discussion has been extended toward other factors affecting the sensitivity of the practical system, such as the linear dynamic range of the detector, the signal-to-noise ratio and the intensity from the light source, etc. Experimental results from the investigation Of SiO2 layer on silicon substrate are chosen to verify the optimization. Wave propagation and the frequency domain Green's functions in viscoelastic Biot/squirt (BISQ) media
Resumo:
In this paper, we examine the characteristics of elastic wave propagation in viscoelastic porous media, which contain simultaneously both the Biot-flow and the squirt-flow mechanisms (BISQ). The frequency-domain Green's functions for viscoelastic BISQ media are then derived based on the classic potential function methods. Our numerical results show that S-waves are only affected by viscoelasticity, but not by squirt-flows. However, the phase velocity and attenuation of fast P-waves are seriously influenced by both viscoelasticity and squirt-flows; and there exist two peaks in the attenuation-frequency variations of fast P-waves. In the low-frequency range, the squirt-flow characteristic length, not viscoelasticity, affects the phase velocity of slow P-waves, whereas it is opposite in the high-frequency range. As to the contribution of potential functions of two types of compressional waves to the Green's function, the squirt-flow length has a small effect, and the effects of viscoelastic parameter are mainly in the higher frequency range. The Alliance for Coastal Technologies (ACT) Workshop on Optical Remote Sensing of Coastal Habitats was convened January 9-11, 2006 at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in Moss Landing, California, sponsored by the ACT West Coast regional partnership comprised of the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML) and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI). The "Optical Remote Sensing of Coastal Habitats" (ORS) Workshop completes ACT'S Remote Sensing Technology series by building upon the success of ACT'S West Coast Regional Partner Workshop "Acoustic Remote Sensing Technologies for Coastal Imaging and Resource Assessment" (ACT 04-07). Drs. Paul Bissett of the Florida Environmental Research Institute (FERI) and Scott McClean of Satlantic, Inc. were the ORS workshop co-chairs. Invited participants were selected to provide a uniform representation of the academic researchers, private sector product developers, and existing and potential data product users from the resource management community to enable development of broad consensus opinions on the role of ORS technologies in coastal resource assessment and management. The workshop was organized to examine the current state of multi- and hyper-spectral imaging technologies with the intent to assess the current limits on their routine application for habitat classification and resource monitoring of coastal watersheds, nearshore shallow water environments, and adjacent optically deep waters. Breakout discussions focused on the capabilities, advantages ,and limitations of the different technologies (e.g., spectral & spatial resolution), as well as practical issues related to instrument and platform availability, reliability, hardware, software, and technical skill levels required to exploit the data products generated by these instruments. Specifically, the participants were charged to address the following: (1) Identify the types of ORS data products currently used for coastal resource assessment and how they can assist coastal managers in fulfilling their regulatory and management responsibilities; (2) Identify barriers and challenges to the application of ORS technologies in management and research activities; (3) Recommend a series of community actions to overcome identified barriers and challenges. Plenary presentations by Drs. Curtiss 0. Davis (Oregon State University) and Stephan Lataille (ITRES Research, Ltd.) provided background summaries on the varieties of ORS technologies available, deployment platform options, and tradeoffs for application of ORS data products with specific applications to the assessment of coastal zone water quality and habitat characterization. Dr. Jim Aiken (CASIX) described how multiscale ground-truth measurements were essential for developing robust assessment of modeled biogeochemical interpretations derived from optically based earth observation data sets. While continuing improvements in sensor spectral resolution, signal to noise and dynamic range coupled with sensor-integrated GPS, improved processing algorithms for georectification, and atmospheric correction have made ORS data products invaluable synoptic tools for oceanographic research, their adoption as management tools has lagged. Seth Blitch (Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve) described the obvious needs for, yet substantial challenges hindering the adoption of advanced spectroscopic imaging data products to supplement the current dominance of digital ortho-quad imagery by the resource management community, especially when they impinge on regulatory issues. Combining differential confocal microscopy and an annular pupil filter, we obtained the normalized axial intensity distribution curve of an optical system. We used the sharp slopes of the axial response curve of the optical system to measure the surface profile of a reflection grating. Experimental results prove that this method can extend the axial dynamic range and improve the transverse resolution of three-dimensional profilometry by sacrificing axial resolution. A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system based on an interrogating technique by two parallel matched gratings was designed and theoretically discussed. With an interrogation grating playing the role of temperature compensation grating simultaneously, the wavelength drifts induced by temperature and strain were discriminated. Additionally, the expressions of temperature and strain were deduced for our solution, and dual-value problem and cross sensitivity were solved synchronously through data processing. The influence of the FBG's parameters on the dynamic range and precision was discussed. Besides, the change of environment temperature cannot influence the dynamic range of the sensor system through temperature tuning. The system proposed in this paper will be of great significance to accelerate the real engineering applications of FBG sensing techniques. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.
