This article quantifies the effect of the operating pressure of the H 2 + C 2H 4 gas mixture on the current density and threshold voltage of the electron emission from dense forests of multiwalled carbon nanotubes synthesized using thermal catalytic Chemical Vapor Deposition under near atmospheric pressure process conditions. The results suggest that in the pressure range of interest 400-700 Torr the field emission properties can be substantially improved by operating the process at lower gas pressures when the nanostructure aspect ratios are higher. The obtained threshold voltage ∼1.75 V/μm and the emission current densities ∼10 mA/cm 2 offer competitive advantages compared with the results reported by other authors. Copyright

New push-pull copolymers based on thiophene (donor) and benzothiadiazole (acceptor) units, poly[4,7-bis(3-dodecylthiophene-2-yl) benzothiadiazole-co- thiophene] (PT3B1) and poly[4,7-bis(3-dodecylthiophene-2-yl) benzothiadiazole-co-benzothiadiazole] (PT2B2), are designed and synthesized via Stille and Suzuki coupling routes respectively. Gel permeation chromatography shows the number average molecular weights are 31100 and 8400 g mol-1 for the two polymers, respectively. Both polymers have shown absorption throughout a wide range of the UV-vis region, from 300 to 650 nm. A significant red shift of the absorption edge is observed in thin films compared to solution of the copolymers; the optical band gap is in the range of 1.7 to 1.8 eV. Cyclic voltammetry indicates reversible oxidation and reduction processes with HOMO energy levels calculated to be in the range of 5.2 to 5.4 eV. Upon testing both materials for organic field-effect transistors (OFETs), PT3B1 showed a hole mobility of 6.1 × 10-4 cm2 V-1 s -1, while PT2B2 did not show any field effect transport. Both copolymers displayed a photovoltaic response when combined with a methanofullerene as an electron acceptor. The best performance was achieved when the copolymer PT3B1 was blended with [70]PCBM in a 1:4 ratio, exhibiting a short-circuit current of 7.27 mA cm-2, an open circuit voltage of 0.85 V, and a fill factor of 41% yielding a power conversion efficiency of 2.54% under simulated air mass (AM) 1.5 global (1.5 G) illumination conditions (100 mW cm-2). Similar devices utilizing PT2B2 in place of PT3B1 demonstrated reduced performance with a short-circuit current of 4.8 mA cm -2, an open circuit voltage of 0.73 V, and a fill factor of 30% resulting in a power conversion efficiency of roughly 1.06%.

The putative role of the N-terminal region of rhodopsin-like 7 transmembrane biogenic amine receptors in agonist-induced signaling has not yet been clarified despite recent advances in 7 transmembrane receptor structural biology. Given the existence of N-terminal nonsynonymous polymorphisms (R6G;E42G) within the HTR2B gene in a drug-abusing population, we assessed whether these polymorphisms affect 5-hydroxytryptamine 2B (5-HT2B) receptor in vitro pharmacologic and coupling properties in transfected COS-7 cells. Modification of the 5-HT2B receptor N terminus by the R6G;E42G polymorphisms increases such agonist signaling pathways as inositol phosphate accumulation as assessed by either classic or operational models. The N-terminal R6G;E42G mutations of the 5-HT2B receptor also increase cell proliferation and slow its desensitization kinetics compared with the wild-type receptor, further supporting a role for the N terminus in transduction efficacy. Furthermore, by coexpressing a tethered wild-type 5-HT2B receptor N terminus with a 5-HT2B receptor bearing a N-terminal deletion, we were able to restore original coupling. This reversion to normal activity of a truncated 5-HT2B receptor by coexpression of the membrane-tethered wild-type 5-HT2B receptor N terminus was not observed using a membrane-tethered 5-HT2B receptor R6G;E42G N terminus. These data suggest that the N terminus exerts a negative control over basal as well as agonist-stimulated receptor activity that is lost in the R6G;E42G mutant. Our findings reveal a new and unanticipated role of the 5-HT2B receptor N terminus as a negative modulator, affecting both constitutive and agonist-stimulated activity. Moreover, our data caution against excluding the N terminus and extracellular loops in structural studies of this 7 transmembrane receptor family

Objective Exercise has the potential to offer a range of health benefits in addition to improving healing outcomes for people with venous leg ulcers. However despite evidence based recommendations, most of these individuals do not engage in regular exercise. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the perspectives of adults with venous leg ulcers, in relation to exercise. Method This was a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews and discussions. Ten participants with venous leg ulceration volunteered to participate. Recruitment was through a specialist wound clinic. Verbatim data were collected by an experienced moderator using a semi-structured guide. Data saturation was reached after three group discussions and two interviews. A random selection of transcripts was sent back to the participants for verification. Thematic content analysis was used to determine major themes and categories. Two transcripts were independently analysed, categories and themes independently developed, cross checked and found comparable. Remaining transcripts were analysed using developed categories and codes. Results Regardless of their current exercise routine, participants reported exercising prior to venous leg ulceration and expressed an interest in either becoming active or maintaining an active lifestyle. Overall four themes emerged from the findings: i) participant understanding of the relationship between chronic venous insufficiency and exercise patterns, ii) fear of harm impacts upon positive beliefs and attitudes to exercise, iii) perceived factors limit exercise and iv) structured management facilitates exercise. Conclusion The value of exercise in improving outcomes in venous leg ulcers lies in its capacity to promote venous return and reduce the risk of secondary conditions in this population. Despite motivation and interest in being exercise active, people with venous leg ulcers report many obstacles. Further exploration of mechanisms that assist this patient population and promote understanding about management of barriers, coupled with promotion of enabling factors is vital for improving their exercise participation.

As a Lecturer of Animation History and 3D Computer Animator, I received a copy of Moving Innovation: A History of Computer Animation by Tom Sito with an element of anticipation in the hope that this text would clarify the complex evolution of Computer Graphics (CG). Tom Sito did not disappoint, as this text weaves together the multiple development streams and convergent technologies and techniques throughout history that would ultimately result in modern CG. Universities now have students who have never known a world without computer animation and many students are younger than the first 3D CG animated feature film, Toy Story (1996); this text is ideal for teaching computer animation history and, as I would argue, it also provides a model for engaging young students in the study of animation history in general. This is because Sito places the development of computer animation within the context of its pre-digital ancestry and throughout the text he continues to link the discussion to the broader history of animation, its pioneers, technologies and techniques...

Objective There is evidence that folate metabolism has a role in migraine pathophysiology, particularly in the migraine with aura subtype. In this study we investigate whether two non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs1950902 (C401T; R134K) and rs2236225 (G1958A; R653Q), in MTHDF1 are associated with migraine in an Australian case-control population. Background Increased plasma levels of homocysteine (HCy), one of the metabolites produced in the folate pathway, has been found to be a risk factor for migraine. There is also a genetic link, as a common polymorphism (C667T) that reduces the catalytic activity of MTHFR, the enzyme that catalyses the formation of HCy, is associated with an increase in risk of the migraine with aura (MA) subtype. MTHFD1 is a crucial multifunctional enzyme that catalyses three separate reactions of the folate pathway and therefore variants in MTHFD1 may also influence migraine susceptibility. Methods The R134K and R653Q variants in MTHFD1 were genotyped in an Australian cohort of 520 unrelated migraineurs (162 were diagnosed with migraine without aura [MO] and 358 with MA) and 520 matched controls. Data were analysed for association with migraine and for interaction with the MTHFR C667T polymorphism. Results We find no significant differences in genotype or allele frequencies for either SNP between migraineurs and controls, or when either MO or MA cases were compared to controls. In addition these MTHFD1 polymorphisms did not appear to influence the risk of MA conferred by the MTHFR 667T allele. Conclusions We find no evidence for association of the MTHFD1 R134K and R653Q polymorphisms with migraine in our Australian case-control population. However, as folate metabolism appears to be important in migraine, particularly with respect to the aura component, future studies using high throughput methods to expand the number of SNPs in folate-related genes genotyped and investigation of interactions between SNPs may be justified.

PURPOSE The purposes of this study were to: 1) establish inter-instrument reliability between left and right hip accelerometer placement; 2) examine procedural reliability of a walking protocol used to measure physical activity (PA), and; 3) confirm concurrent validity of accelerometers in measuring PA intensity as compared to the gold standard of oxygen consumption measured by indirect calorimetry. METHODS Eight children (mean age: 11.9; SD: 3.2, 75% male) with CP (GMFCS levels I-III) wore ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers on each hip and the Cosmed K4b^{2} portable indirect calorimeter during two measurement sessions in which they performed the six minute walk test (6MWT) at three self-selected speeds (comfortable/slow, brisk, fast). Oxygen consumption (VO2) and accelerometer step and activity count data were recorded. RESULTS Inter-instrument reliability of ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers placed on left and right hips was excellent (ICC=0.96-0.99, CI_{95}: 0.81-0.99). Reproducibility of the protocol was good/excellent (ICC=0.75-0.95, CI_{95}: 0.75-0.98). Concurrent validity of accelerometer count data and VO2 was fair/good (rho=0.67, p< 0.001). The correlation between step count and VO2 was not significant (rho=0.29, p=0.2). CONCLUSION This preliminary research suggests that ActiGraph GT3X accelerometers are reliable and valid devices to monitor PA during walking in children with CP and may be appropriate in rehabilitation research and clinical practice. ActiGraph GTX3 step counts were not valid for this sample and further research is warranted.

In recent decades, highly motorised countries, such as Australia, have witnessed significant improvements in population health through reductions in fatalities and injuries from road traffic crashes. In Australia, concerted efforts have been made to reduce the road trauma burden since road fatalities reached their highest level in in the early 1970s. Since that time, many improvements have been made drawing on various disciplines to reduce the trauma burden (e.g., road and vehicle design, road user education, traffic law enforcement practices and enforcement technologies). While road fatalities have declined significantly since the mid-1970s, road trauma remains a serious public health concern in Australia. China has recently become the largest car market in the world (Ma, Li, Zhou, Duan, & Bishai, 2012). This rapid motorisation has been accompanied by substantial expansion of the road network as well as a large road trauma burden. Road traffic injuries are a major cause of death in China, reported as accounting for one third of all injury-deaths between 2002 and 2006 (Ma et al., 2012). In common with Australia, China has experienced a reported decline in fatalities since 2002 (see Hu, Wen & Baker, 2008). However, there remains a strong need for action in this area as rates of motorisation continue to climb in China. In Australia, a wide range of organisations have contributed to the improvements in road safety including government agencies, professional organisations, advocacy groups and research centres. In particular, Australia has several highly regarded and multi-disciplinary, university-based research centres that work across a range of road safety fields, including engineering, intelligent transportation systems, the psychology of road user behaviour, and traffic law enforcement. Besides conducting high-quality research, these centres fulfil an important advocacy role in promoting safer road use and facilitating collaborations with government and other agencies, at both the national and international level. To illustrate the role of these centres, an overview will be provided of the Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety-Queensland (CARRS-Q), which was established in 1996 and has gone on to become a recognised world-leader in road safety and injury prevention research. The Centre’s research findings are used to provide evidence-based recommendations to government and have directly contributed to promoting safer road use in Australia. Since 2006, CARRS-Q has also developed strong collaborative links with various universities and organisations in China to assist in building understanding, connections and capacity to assist in reducing the road trauma burden. Hydrogeophysics is a growing discipline that holds significant promise to help elucidate details of dynamic processes in the near surface, built on the ability of geophysical methods to measure properties from which hydrological and geochemical variables can be derived. For example, bulk electrical conductivity is governed by, amongst others, interstitial water content, fluid salinity, and temperature, and can be measured using a range of geophysical methods. In many cases, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is well suited to characterize these properties in multiple dimensions and to monitor dynamic processes, such as water infiltration and solute transport. In recent years, ERT has been used increasingly for ecosystem research in a wide range of settings; in particular to characterize vegetation-driven changes in root-zone and near-surface water dynamics. This increased popularity is due to operational factors (e.g., improved equipment, low site impact), data considerations (e.g., excellent repeatability), and the fact that ERT operates at scales significantly larger than traditional point sensors. Current limitations to a more widespread use of the approach include the high equipment costs, and the need for site-specific petrophysical relationships between properties of interest. In this presentation we will discuss recent equipment advances and theoretical and methodological aspects involved in the accurate estimation of soil moisture from ERT results. Examples will be presented from two studies in a temperate climate (Michigan, USA) and one from a humid tropical location (Tapajos, Brazil).

The Archean Hollandaire volcanogenic massive sulfide deposit is a felsic–siliciclastic VMS deposit located in the Murchison Domain of the Youanmi Terrane, Yilgarn Craton, Western Australia. It is hosted in a succession of turbidites, mudstones and coherent rhyodacite sills and has been metamorphosed to upper greenschist/lower amphibolite facies and includes a pervasive S1 deformational fabric. The coherent rhyodacitic sills are interpreted as syndepositional based on geochemical similarities with well-known VMS-associated felsic rocks and similar foliations to the metasediments. We offer several explanations for the absence of textural evidence (e.g. breccias) for syn-depositional origins: 1) the subaqueous sediments were dehydrated by long-lived magmatism such that no pore-water remained to drive quench fragmentation; 2) pore-space occlusion by burial and/or, 3) alteration overprinting and obscuring of primary breccias at contact margins. Mineralisation occurs by sub-seafloor replacement of original host rocks in two ore bodies, Hollandaire Main (~125 x >500 m and ~8 m thick) and Hollandaire West (~100 x 470 m and ~5 m thick), and occurs in three main textural styles, massive sulfides, which are exclusively hosted in turbidites and mudstones, and stringer and disseminated sulfides, which are also hosted in coherent rhyodacite. Most sulfides have textures consistent with remobilisation and recrystallisation. Hydrothermal metamorphism has altered the hangingwall and footwall to similar degrees, with significant gains in Mg, Mn and K and losses in Na, Ca and Sr. Garnet and staurolite porphyryoblasts also exhibit a footprint around mineralisation, extending up to 30 m both above and below the ore zone. High precision thermal ionisation mass spectrometry of zircons extracted from the coherent rhyodacite yield an age of 2759.5 ± 0.9 Ma, which along with geochemical comparisons, places the succession within the 2760–2735 Ma Greensleeves Formation of the Polelle Group of the Murchison Supergroup. Geochemical and geochronological evidence link the coherent rhyodacite sills to the Peter Well Granodiorite pluton ~2 km to the W, which acted as the heat engine driving hydrothermal circulation during VMS mineralisation. This study highlights the importance of both: detailed physical volcanological studies from which an accurate assessment of timing relationships, particularly the possibility of intrusions dismembering ore horizons, can be made; and identifying synvolcanic plutons and other similar suites, for VMS exploration targets in the Youanmi Terrane and worldwide.

The synthesis of organoclays (OC) by intercalation of quaternary ammonium cation (QAC) into expanding clay minerals, notably montmorillonite (Mt), has attracted a great deal of attention during the past two decades. The OC have also found applications in the manufacture of clay polymer nanocomposites (CPN) and environmental remediation. Despite the wealth of information that exists on the formation and properties of OC, some problems remain to be resolved. The present contribution is an attempt at clarifying two outstanding issues, based on the literature and experimental data obtained by the authors over the past years. The first issue concerns the relationship between the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the Mt and the basal spacing of the OC which, in turn, is dependent on the concentration and the nature of the added QAC. At a concentration less than 1 CEC, organo-Mt (OMt) formed using the QAC with a short alkyl chain length with nc < 16 (e.g., dodecyl trimethylammonium) gives basal spacings of 1.4–1.6 nm that are essentially independent of the CEC. However, for long-chain QAC with nc ≥ 16 (e.g., hexadecyl trimethylammonium), the basal spacing varies with the QAC concentration. For Mt with a CEC of 80–90 meq/100 g, the basal spacing of the OC increases gradually with the CEC and shows a sudden (stepwise) increase to 3.2–3.8 nm at a QAC concentration of 1.5 CEC and to 3.5–4.0 nm at a concentration of 2.0 CEC. The second issue pertains to the “locking” effect in QAC- and silane-modified pillared interlayered clays (PILC) and Mt. For silylated Mt, the “locking” effect results from the covalent bonding of silane to two adjacent layers within a single clay mineral particle. The same mechanism can operate in silane-grafted PILC but in this case, the “locking” effect may primarily be ascribed to the pillaring of adjacent basal surfaces by metal hydr(oxides).
