Marcas Identitárias: presença italiana no sertão da Bahia (1878-1910)

A tese Marcas Identitárias - presença italiana no sertão da Bahia, insere-se na Linha de Pesquisa Cultura Política do Programa de História Política da UERJ. O tema se define em torno do poder simbólico, práticas culturais e representações, além do confronto de imaginários. A problemática analisada aborda questões vinculadas à imigração italiana no sudoeste da Bahia, em Jequié, no periodo de 1878 a 1910. A presença desses europeus no sertão baiano despertou a atenção para o estudo de um fenômeno histórico pouco explorado pelos estudiosos em imigração, orientados em sua maioria para a imigração no sul do país. A tese destaca questões pontuais sobre as alterações devido à introdução de novas formas identitárias que se confrontaram naquela região sertaneja. Os procedimentos teórico-metodológicos se referem à História Cultural. A análise da questão fundamentou-se em fontes primárias coletadas nos Arquivos de Salvador e de Jequié, além de documentos particulares dos descendentes dos imigrantes italianos residentes naquele Município.

Camarāo de profundidade: relatório dos cruzeiros realizados com o n/i "Ernst Haeckel" em Agosto-Setembro 1980, Novembro-Dezembro 1980, Janeiro-Fevereiro 1981, Janeiro-Fevereiro 1982

Reports of cruises carried out off Mozambique between parallels 21 degree 00 and 26 degree 20'S and at depths of 400 and 800 meters including abundance indices, catch composition, geographic and bathymetric distributions of shrimp catches are presented. The main species found were Hymenopenaeus triarthrus and Aristeomorpha foliacea which represent 64 to 72% of total catches.

A report on a survey with the r/v "Ernst Haeckel" in July-August 1980: shallow-water shrimp and by-catch, oceanography

A survey of the Sofala Bank (Mozambique) was conducted to: estimate the abundance of shallow-water shrimp in the area between 16 degree 20'S and 20 degree 20'S, from 5 to 100 meters; estimate the shallow-water shrimp species composition and distribution pattern of main species. Collect biological data of the main species, Penaeus indicus and Metapenaeus monoceros; study the shrimp by-catch, species composition and biological data collection of the most abundant species of commercial value; and collect environmental data to clarify the shelf circulation on the Sofala Bank and the main oceanic features in the regions 15 degree S to 18 degree S and south of 22 degree S.

Heinrich event imprints in the Okinawa Trough: evidence from oxygen isotope and planktonic foraminifera

Planktonic foraminiferal faunas, oxygen isotope and modern analog technique sea surface temperature records were obtained in piston core DGKS9603 (28degrees08.869'N, 127degrees16.238'E, water depth 1100 in) collected from the middle Okinawa Trough. During the last glaciation, four cold events were identified and correlate Heinrich events (HE) H2-5 of the last 45 ka. During the last deglaciation, core DGKS9603 has begun to be influenced by the Kuroshio since about 16 cal ka BP. Three weakenings of this warm current occurred at about 2.8-5.3, 11.4 and 15.5 cal ka BP respectively. Among the three fluctuations, the oldest one is synchronous with HE1 and could be a response to the strong cooling observed in the North Atlantic Ocean. The fluctuation occurring at about 11.4 cal ka ago corresponds to the Younger Dryas within the age error bars. Our observations provide new evidence that the HEs documented from Greenland and the northern North Atlantic had a global climatic impact. Changes in the intensity of the East Asian monsoon could be the main mechanism responsible for the paleoccanographic variations observed in the Okinawa Trough. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. The Queen's College, Cork: its origins and early history, 1803-1858

This work examines the origins and early history of the Queen's College, Cork. Designedly there is as much stress on the origins as on the early history, for it is the contention of the work that the College was something more than a legislative mushroom. It was very much in the tradition of the civic universities which added an exciting new dimension to academic life in these islands in the nineteenth century. The first chapter surveys university practice and thinking at the opening of the century, relying exclusively on published sources. The second chapter is devoted specifically to the state of learning in Cork during the period, and makes extensive use of hitherto unpublished manuscript material in relation to the Royal Cork Institution. The third chapter deals with the highly significant evidence on education embodied in the Report of the Select Committee on Irish Education of 1838. This material has not previously been published. In chapter four an extended study is made of relevant letters in the manuscript correspondence of Sir Robert Peel - even the most recent authoritative biography has ignored this material. The remaining three chapters are devoted more specifically to the College, both in the formulation or policy and in its practical working. In chapter six there is an extended survey of early College life based exclusively on hitherto unpublished manuscript material in the College Archives. All of these sources, together with incidental published material, are set out at the end of each chapter.

A couple of embroiled sheets of Miguel Barnades Manaider and Esteban de Prado in the Herbaria of Real Colegio Alfonso XII of San Lorenzo de El Escorial (Madrid)

In this paper we present a couple of sheets of Umbelliferae that are preserved in the RCAXII herbaria. One of them, Selinum carvifolia, where collected in the Gredos Mountains by Miguel Barnades Mainader and was identified by his son Miguel Barnades Clarís. The other, Tragium flabellifolium, was collected in Mieres (Asturias) by Esteban de Prado and identified by Mariano La Gasca.
