Dilatational plastic equations, which can include the effects of ductile damage, are derived based on the equivalency in expressions for dissipated plastic work. Void damage developed internally at the large-strain stage is represented by an effective continuum being strain-softened and plastically dilated. Accumulation of this local damage leads to progressive failure in materials. With regard to this microstructural background, the constitutive parameters included for characterizing material behaviour have the sense of internal variables. They are not able to be determined explicitly by macroscopic testing but rather through computer simulation of experimental curves and data. Application of this constitutive model to mode-I cracking examples demonstrates that a huge strain concentration accompanied by a substantial drop of stress does occur near the crack tip. Eventually, crack propagation is simulated by using finite elements in computations. Two numerical examples show good accordance with experimental data. The whole procedure of study serves as a justification of the constitutive formulation proposed in the text.

The ideal micro-cracks are treated with the number-density function; the characteristics of their evolution are investigated; a deterministic model is applied to the discussion of their extension. It is discovered that under certain conditions saturation may occur in the number-density. The main features of the statistical formulation are illustrated by several examples and compared with those observed in experiments.

Fatigue tests were performed using a purpose designed triangular shaped specimen to investigate the initiation and propagation of short fatigue cracks in a weld metal. It was observed that short fatigue cracks evolved from slip bands and were predominantly within ferrite grains. As the test progressed, the short crack density increased with minor changes in crack length. The growth of short cracks, in the early stage resulted mainly from coalescence with other existing cracks. The mechanism of short crack behaviour is discussed.

A study of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composite material with 0° ply or ±45°ply(unnotched or with edge notch) was carried out under static tensile and tension-tensioncyclic loading testing. Static and fatigue behaviour and damage failure modes in unnotched/notched specimens plied in different manners were analysed and compared with each other.A variety of techniques (acoustic emission, two types of strain extensometer, high speed pho-tography, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope, etc.) were used to examine thedamage of the laminates. Experimental results show that when these carbon/epoxy laminateswith edge notch normal to the direction of the load are axially loaded in static or fatiguetension, the crack does not propagate along the length of notch but is in the interface (fiberdirection). The notch has no substantial effect on the stresses at the unnotched portion. Thedamage failure mechanism is discussed.

Small scale yielding around a mode I crack is analysed using polycrystalline discrete dislocation plasticity. Plane strain analyses are carried out with the dislocations all of edge character and modelled as line singularities in a linear elastic material. The lattice resistance to dislocation motion, nucleation, interaction with obstacles and annihilation are incorporated through a set of constitutive rules. Grain boundaries are modelled as impenetrable to dislocations. The polycrystalline material is taken to consist of two types of square grains, one of which has a bcc-like orientation and the other an fcc-like orientation. For both orientations there are three active slip systems. Alternating rows, alternating columns and a checker-board-like arrangement of the grains is used to construct the polycrystalline materials. Consistent with the increasing yield strength of the polycrystalline material with decreasing grain size, the calculations predict a decrease in both the plastic zone size and the crack-tip opening displacement for a given applied mode I stress intensity factor. Furthermore, slip-band and kink-band formation is inhibited by all grain arrangements and, with decreasing grain size, the stress and strain distributions more closely resemble the HRR fields with the crack-tip opening approximately inversely proportional to the yield strength of the polycrystalline materials. The calculations predict a reduction in fracture toughness with decreasing grain size associated with the grain boundaries acting as effective barriers to dislocation motion.

This paper focuses on improving the thermal fatigue resistance on the surface of vermicular cast iron coupling with inserted H13 steel blocks that had different cross sections, by cast-in processing. The microstructure of bionic units was examined by scanning electron microscope. Micro-hardness and thermal fatigue resistance of bionic samples with varied cross sections and spacings were investigated, respectively. Results show that a marked metallurgical bonding zone was produced at interface between the inserted H13 steel block and the parent material - a unique feature of the bionic structure in the vermicular cast iron samples. The micro-hardness of the bionic samples has been significantly improved. Thermal resistance of the samples with the circular cross section was the highest and the bionics sample with spacing of 2 mm spacing had a much longer thermal fatigue life, thus resulting in the improvement for the thermal fatigue life of the bionic samples, due to the efficient preclusion for the generation and propagation of crack at the interface of H13 block and the matrix. Flexural fatigue tests were performed on an injection-moulded glass-fiber reinforced blend of polyphenylene ether ketone and polyphenylene sulfide composite using four-point bending at a series of fixed mean stress levels with varying stress amplitude. Attention was given to identifying the effects of mean stress and stress amplitude on the fatigue life and failure mechanisms. It was found that the fatigue life of the studied material decreased sharply with increasing stress amplitude at a constant mean stress level and also decreased at a fixed stress amplitude with increasing mean stress. However, analyses of the fatigue data and failure behaviour reveal that, for the studied material, fatigue failure mechanisms depend on the relative importance of mean stress and stress amplitude. At a mean stress level of 80% ultimate flexural strength, the failure results from accumulation of creep strain, while at mean stress levels of 40%, 50% and 60% ultimate flexural strength, the magnitude of stress amplitude influences the type of failure mechanism. As stress amplitude is reduced, the fatigue failure mechanism changes from matrix yielding dominated to crack growth dominated fracture.

Four non-destructive tests for determining the length of fatigue cracks within the solder joints of a 2512 surface mount resistor are investigated. The sensitivity of the tests is obtained using finite element analysis with some experimental validation. Three of the tests are mechanically based and one is thermally based. The mechanical tests all operate by applying different loads to the PCB and monitoring the strain response at the top of the resistor. The thermal test operates by applying a heat source underneath the PCB, and monitoring the temperature response at the top of the resistor. From the modelling work done, two of these tests have shown to be sensitive to cracks. Some experimental results are presented but further work is required to fully validate the simulation results.

This paper investigates an isothermal fatigue test for solder joints developed at the NPL. The test specimen is a lap joint between two copper arms. During the test the displacement at the ends of the copper are controlled and the force measured. The modeling results in the paper show that the displacement across the solder joint is not equal to the displacement applied at the end of the specimen. This is due to deformation within the copper arms. A method is described to compensate for this difference. The strain distribution in the solder was determined by finite element analysis and compared to the distribution generated by a theoretical 'ideal' test which generates an almost pure shear mode in the solder. By using a damage-based constitutive law the shape of the crack generated in the specimen has been predicted for both the actual test and the ideal pure shear test. Results from the simulations are also compared with experimental data using SnAgCu solder.

This paper presents both modelling and experimental test data to characterise the performance of four non-destructive tests. The focus is on determining the presence and rough magnitude of thermal fatigue cracks within the solder joints for a surface mount resistor on a strip of FR4 PCB. The tests all operate by applying mechanical loads to the PCB and monitoring the strain response at the top of the resistor. The modelling results show that of the four tests investigated, three are sensitive to the presence of a crack in the joint and its magnitude. Hence these tests show promise in being able to detect cracking caused by accelerated testing. The experimental data supports these results although more validation is required.

Composites of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) of varied functionality (unfunctionalised and carboxyl and amine functionalised) with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were prepared for use as a bone cement. The MWCNT loadings ranged from 0.1 to 1.0 wt.%. The fatigue properties of these MWCNT–PMMA bone cements were characterised at MWCNT loading levels of 0.1 and 0.25 wt.% with the type and wt.% loading of MWCNT used having a strong influence on the number of cycles to failure. The morphology and degree of dispersion of the MWCNT in the PMMA matrix at different length scales were examined using field emission scanning electron microscopy. Improvements in the fatigue properties were attributed to the MWCNT arresting/retarding crack propagation through the cement through a bridging effect and hindering crack propagation. MWCNT agglomerates were evident within the cement microstructure and the degree of agglomeration was dependent on the level of loading and functionality of the MWCNT. The biocompatibility of the MWCNT–PMMA cements at MWCNT loading levels upto 1.0 wt.% was determined by means of established biological cell culture assays using MG-63 cells. Cell attachment after 4 h was determined using the crystal violet staining assay. Cell viability was determined over 7 days in vitro using the standard colorimetric MTT assay. Confocal scanning laser microscopy and SEM analysis was also used to assess cell morphology on the various substrates.

The fatigue response of an epoxy matrix containing vasculature for the delivery of liquid healing agents is investigated. The release of a rapidly curing, two-part epoxy healing chemistry into the wake of a propagating crack reduces the rate of crack extension by shielding the crack tip from the full range of applied stress intensity factor. Crack propagation is studied for a variety of loading conditions, with the maximum applied stress intensity factor ranging from 62 to 84% of the quasi-static fracture toughness of the material. At the highest level of applied load, the rate of mechanical damage is so fast that the healing agents do not fully mix and polymerize, and the effect of healing is minimal. The self-healing response is most effective at impeding the slower propagating cracks, with complete crack arrest occurring at the lowest level of applied load, and reductions of 79–84% in the rate of crack extension at intermediate loads.
