This dissertation seeks to identify what makes Cicero’s approach to politics unique. The author's methodology is to turn to Cicero’s unique interpretation of Plato as the crux of what made his thinking neither Stoic nor Aristotelian nor even Platonic (at least, in the usual sense of the word) but Ciceronian. As the author demonstrates in his reading of Cicero’s correspondences and dialogues during the downward spiral of a decade that ended in the fall of the Republic (that is, from Cicero’s return from exile in 57 BC to Caesar’s crossing of the Rubicon in 49 BC), it is through Cicero's reading of Plato that the former develops his characteristically Ciceronian approach to politics—that is, his appreciation for the tension between the political ideal on the one hand and the reality of human nature on the other as well as the need for rhetoric to fuse a practicable compromise between the two. This triangulation of political ideal, human nature, and rhetoric is developed by Cicero through his dialogues "de Oratore," "de Re publica," and "de Legibus."

Il Selective Laser Melting è un processo di additive manufacturing che consiste nella realizzazione di componenti metallici tridimensionali, sovrapponendo strati di polvere, che viene via via fusa mediante una sorgente controllata di energia (laser). È una tecnica produttiva che viene utilizzata da più di 20 anni ma solo ora sta assumendo un ruolo rilevante nell’industria. È un processo versatile ma complesso che ad oggi permette di processare solo un numero limitato di leghe. Il presente lavoro di tesi riguarda in particolare lo studio, dal punto di vista microstrutturale, di componenti in acciaio inossidabile austenitico AISI-316L processato mediante Selective Laser Melting, attività svolta in collaborazione con il Gruppo di Tecnologia – Laser del Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale. Alla base dell’attività sperimentale è stata svolta anche un’ampia ricerca bibliografica per chiarire lo stato dell’arte sul processo e sulla lega in questione, la microstruttura, i difetti, le proprietà meccaniche e l’effetto dei parametri di processo sul componente finito. Le attività sperimentali hanno previsto una prima fase di caratterizzazione delle polveri di 316L, successivamente la caratterizzazione dei campioni prodotti tramite selective laser melting, in termini di microstruttura e difetti correlati al processo. Le analisi hanno rivelato la presenza di una microstruttura “gerarchica” costituita da melt pool, grani e celle submicrometriche. I difetti rinvenuti sono pori, delaminazione degli strati, particelle di polvere non fuse. Infine è stata eseguita la caratterizzazione frattografica dei campioni sottoposti a prove di trazione e di fatica a flessione rotante (attività condotte dal gruppo Laser) per identificare la morfologia di frattura e i siti di innesco della cricca di fatica.

The goal of image retrieval and matching is to find and locate object instances in images from a large-scale image database. While visual features are abundant, how to combine them to improve performance by individual features remains a challenging task. In this work, we focus on leveraging multiple features for accurate and efficient image retrieval and matching. We first propose two graph-based approaches to rerank initially retrieved images for generic image retrieval. In the graph, vertices are images while edges are similarities between image pairs. Our first approach employs a mixture Markov model based on a random walk model on multiple graphs to fuse graphs. We introduce a probabilistic model to compute the importance of each feature for graph fusion under a naive Bayesian formulation, which requires statistics of similarities from a manually labeled dataset containing irrelevant images. To reduce human labeling, we further propose a fully unsupervised reranking algorithm based on a submodular objective function that can be efficiently optimized by greedy algorithm. By maximizing an information gain term over the graph, our submodular function favors a subset of database images that are similar to query images and resemble each other. The function also exploits the rank relationships of images from multiple ranked lists obtained by different features. We then study a more well-defined application, person re-identification, where the database contains labeled images of human bodies captured by multiple cameras. Re-identifications from multiple cameras are regarded as related tasks to exploit shared information. We apply a novel multi-task learning algorithm using both low level features and attributes. A low rank attribute embedding is joint learned within the multi-task learning formulation to embed original binary attributes to a continuous attribute space, where incorrect and incomplete attributes are rectified and recovered. To locate objects in images, we design an object detector based on object proposals and deep convolutional neural networks (CNN) in view of the emergence of deep networks. We improve a Fast RCNN framework and investigate two new strategies to detect objects accurately and efficiently: scale-dependent pooling (SDP) and cascaded rejection classifiers (CRC). The SDP improves detection accuracy by exploiting appropriate convolutional features depending on the scale of input object proposals. The CRC effectively utilizes convolutional features and greatly eliminates negative proposals in a cascaded manner, while maintaining a high recall for true objects. The two strategies together improve the detection accuracy and reduce the computational cost.

The main task is to analyze the state of the art of grating couplers production and low-cost polymer substrates. Then to provide a recommendation of a new or adapted process for the production of metallic gratings on polymer sheets, based on a Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA). In order to achieve that, this thesis is divided into four chapters. After the first introductory chapter, the second section provides details about the state-of-the-art in optical technology platforms with focus on polymers and their main features for the aimed application, such as flexibility, low cost and roll to roll compatibility. It defines then the diffraction gratings and their specifications and closes with the explanation of adhesion mechanisms of inorganic materials on polymer substrates. The third chapter discusses processing of grating couplers. It introduces the basic fabrication methods and details a selection of current fabrication schemes found in literature with an assessment of their potential use for the desired application. The last chapter is a FMEA analysis of the retained fabrication process, called Flip and Fuse, in order to check its capability to realize the grating structure.

This dissertation aims to explore the contemporary Caribbean and its dramaturgy through the study of the artistic work of two remarkable artists: the Puerto Rican Teresa Hernández and the Dominicanyork Josefina Báez. Both artists are currently generating a lot of attention due to the internationalization of their creations, but still their work deserves even more consideration. These skilled stage artists connect various islands through their artistic work: Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, and the islands within New York City. The different cultures that converge and coexist in these places exemplify the process of hybridization that characterizes our modern world. Teresa and Josefina illustrate in their plays the plurality of the Caribbean, depicting a true multiplicity of languages and cultures that makes it impossible to adopt a fixed and unique conception of a national identity. They engage in the difficult task of finding out what it means to be a Puerto Rican, a Dominican or a New Yorker. Both performers clearly criticize the notion of an identity that pretends to fuse and include all the possible voices of every Caribbean nation under a sole definition. Therefore, one must consider the heterogeneity that surrounds us as the basis to approach the work of these two artists when evaluating the Caribbean, as well as the dramaturgical procedures these great performers employ. To begin with, how can we talk about the Caribbean? How can we talk accurately about dramaturgical procedures? Furthermore, how can we express with words the ephemeral aspect of the theatrical event? How can we use words to address a Caribbean reality, which contains European and American standards, but does not necessarily follow them? These are the questions that the present investigation seeks to answer; however, it is not an easy task. Thus, the real challenge of this dissertation is to offer a rigorous response to these questions...

The power industry generates as waste ceramic bodies of electrical fuses that are discarded after use. The formulation of ceramic bodies for porcelain electrical insulators using waste from the bodies fuse allocation promotes environmentally appropriate, through the reuse of the material. This work evaluated the technical feasibility of using waste for use in electrical porcelains with formulations containing the residue, feldspar and kaolinite. The raw materials were processed through grinding and sieving to 200 mesh. The ceramic material obtained from the proposed formulations with 25%, 30%, 34% and 40% of the residue went through a vibratory mill for grinding and homogenization, and then were sieved at 325 mesh. The samples were shaped in a uniaxial press, with the application of 25 MPa and sintered at 1100° C, 1150°C, 1200°C, 1225°C and 1250°C, at levels of 20 and 45 minutes. Were also developed bodies of evidence with reference formulations obtained without residue, to establish a comparison on physical, mechanical and electrical. The tests were conducted and technology: linear shrinkage, porosity, water absorption, resistance to bending to three points, measuring insulation resistance electrical resistivity of the material, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence Waste characterizations pointed to the existence of two phases: mullite and quartz phases are of great importance in the microstructure of the ceramic and this fact reveals a possibility for reuse in electrical porcelains. The mullite is an important constituent because it is a phase that makes it possible to increase the mechanical strength in addition to the body allows the use at high temperatures. The use of ceramic bodies residue fuses, proved feasible for application in electrical porcelain and the most significant results were obtained by the formulations with 25% waste and sintering at 1200°C

Alzheimer's disease makes great demands on care by assistants, due to the fact that they cannot distract their attention from patients while they are at the same time managing records. For that reason, technologies to complement this process need to be adapted. In this work we present a proposal to adapt identification technologies: Radiofrequency Identification (RFID) and Near Field Communications (NFC), focusing especially on the last one. We fuse both technologies and apply them to an Alzheimer's day center. Patients are tagged with two kinds of labels: 13.56Mhz.Mifare for NFC and UHF for RFID. With the first one we tag the context, which means patients, devices (displays, exercise books, etc) and places. With a simple interaction, which involves touching tags with mobile phones, it is possible to manage the information easily. Moreover, with RFID, we localize each patient by the simple act of their passing by an antenna placed in the doors.

The interpretative framework presented here provides a rationale for many well-known features of cardiovascular diseases. Prolonged acidemia with high blood levels of free fatty acids is proposed to shape the basic context for formation of fatty acid micelles and vesicles with an acidic core that fuse with the endothelia, disrupt vital cell processes, and initiate atherosclerotic plaque formation. It offers an explanation for the distributed localization of atherosclerotic lesions, and how mild cases of occurrence of fatty acids vesicles formed within the heart and the arteries close to the heart may cause such lesions. It provides a rationale for how acute events, namely heart attacks and strokes, may arise from stormy development of fatty acid vesicles within the heart. Additionally, a process is proposed for clot development from the existing fatty acid vesicles.
