In this paper, an experiment on tunable resonant cavity enhanced (RCE) photodetector with external cavity is reported. It is the first time to realize a tunable RCE photodetector in China. The flow behaviors of CH3CCl2F hydrate slurry with volume concentration of 10-70% were studied in a new built flow loop with a diameter of 42.0 mm and length of 30.0 m. Morphologies of the fluids from slurrylike hydrates to slushlike hydrates with increasing of hydrate volume concentration in pipeline were observed. Pressure drops in pipeline also were studied and an exceptional pressure transition zone with hydrate volume concentration between 30% and 40% was found for the first time, which can be used as a notation to judge if the pipeline runs safely or not. Fanning friction factors of the hydrate slurries with all hydrate contents tend to constants between 0.38 and 0.5, which depend on the volume concentration in slurries, when the velocity reaches 1.5 m/s. A simple relation to estimate the pressure drop of hydrate slurry in pipeline was presented and verified. Experimental results were compared to the estimated results, which showed a good agreement.

We report the generation of ultrashort pulses in ytterbium-doped fibre oscillator emitting around 1.05 mum at a repetition rate of 17.6MHz. A diode laser with single silica fibre at 976 nm pumps the ytterbium fibre laser, the all-fibre picosecond pulsed oscillator has excellent stability and compact size, and freedom from misalignment. After amplifying, pulse energy of 3.4 nJ and an average power of 60mW are obtained. The compression is obtained with a grating pair out of the cavity. The compressor produces 307 fs with the peak power 5.47 kW. A practical fibre-based source with good performance is thus demonstrated.

The characteristics of K alpha X-ray sources generated by p-polarized femtosecond laser-solid interactions are experimentally studied in the relativistic regime. By use of knife-edge image technique and a single-photon-counting X-ray CCD camera, we obtaine the source size, the spectrum and the conversion efficiency of the Ka X-ray sources. The experimental results show that the conversion efficiency of Ka photons reaches an optimum value of 7.08 x 10(-6)/sr at the laser intensity of 1.6 x 10(18) W/cm(2), which is different from the Reich's simulation results (Reich et al., 2000 Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 4846). We find that about 10% of laser energy is converted into the forward hot electrons at the laser intensity of 1.6 x 10(18) W/cm(2).

Recording with both parallel and orthogonal linearly polarized lights, polarization holographic storage in genetic mutant BR-D96N film is reported with both transmission type geometry and reflection type geometry. Polarization properties of diffraction light and scattering light are discussed for two different cases, parallel polarization recording and orthogonal polarization recording. It shows that, compared with recording with parallel polarization lights, orthogonal polarization holography can separate the diffraction light from the scattering noise, therefore improving the signal-to-noise ratio. It also shows that, compared with reconstruction with reference light, reconstruction with phase conjugated wave of the reference light can improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed diffraction image, and also the wave-front aberration of the object light introduced by irregular phase object in the optical pass-way can also be corrected effectively, which ensures that the reconstructed diffraction image has a better fidelity. The preliminary angle-multiplexed volume holographic storage multiplexed by transmission type geometry and reflection type geometry is demonstrated in the BR-D96N film. Experiment shows that there is no cross-talk between the two pages of images except for some scattering noises.

Equilateral triangle semiconductor microcavities with tensile-strained InGaAsP multi-quantum-well asthe active region are fabricated by the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching technique. The modecharacteristics of the fabricated microcavities are investigated by photoluminescence, and enhanced peaksof the photoluminescence spectra corresponding to the fundamental transverse modes are observed formicrocavities with side lengths of 5 and 10 μm. The mode wavelength spacings measured experimentallycoincide very well with those obtained by the theoretical formulae.
