The effects of strontium on the solidi. cation mode of hypereutectic aluminium-silicon alloys have been studied. Samples were prepared from an aluminium-17wt% silicon-based alloy and strontium was added at several different concentrations. The development of the microstructure was investigated by cooling curve analysis, interrupted solidi. cation experiments and optical and scanning electron microscopy. It was found that nucleation of primary silicon is suppressed by additions of strontium. The suppressed nucleation results in supersaturation of the liquid prior to nucleation, and an increased growth rate after nucleation. As a result, the silicon crystals become less faceted and more dendritic with increasing strontium additions. Increasing the strontium concentration slightly refined the eutectic spacing and introduced a small amount of fibrous silicon. Electron back-scatter diffraction measurements were performed to determine the crystallographic relation between the primary and eutectic silicon phases. The eutectic silicon in the unmodified alloy does not have any crystallographic relationship with the primary silicon crystals. In contrast, the eutectic silicon crystals in the strontium-modified alloys often share an identical or twin relationship with nearby primary silicon crystals. The incidence of twinning within primary silicon crystals was relatively low and did not appear to increase with strontium additions.

Strontium modification is known to alter the amount, characteristics, and distribution of porosity in Al-Si castings. Although many theories have been proposed to account for these effects, most can be considered inadequate because of their failure to resolve contradictions and discrepancies in the literature. In an attempt to critically appraise some of these theories, the amount, distribution, and morphology of porosity were examined in sand-cast plates of Sr-free and Sr-containing pure Al, Al-l wt pet Si, and Al-9 wt pet Si alloys. Statistical significance testing was used to verify apparent trends in the porosity data. No apparent differences in the amount, distribution, and morphology of porosity were observed between Sr-free and Sr-containing alloys with no or very small eutectic volume fractions. However, Sr modification significantly changed the amount, distribution, and morphology of porosity in alloys with a significant volume fraction of eutectic. ne addition of Sr reduced porosity in the hot spot region of the casting, and the pores became well dispersed and rounded. This result can be explained by considering the combined effect of the casting design and the differences in the pattern of eutectic solidification between unmodified and Sr-modified alloys.

The effect of increasing levels of silicon on the microstructure and creep properties of high-pressure die-cast Mg-Al-Si (AS) alloys has been investigated. The morphology of the Mg2Si phase in die-cast AS alloys was found to be a function of the silicon content. The Mg2Si particles in castings with up to 1.14 wt pct Si have a Chinese script morphology. For AS21 alloys with silicon contents greater than 1.4 wt pet Si (greater than the alpha-Mg2Si binary eutectic point), some Mg2Si particles have a coarse blocky shape. Increasing the silicon content above the eutectic level results in an increase in the number of coarse faceted Mg2Si particles in the microstructure. Creep rates at 100 hours were found to decrease with increasing silicon content in AS-type alloys. The decrease in creep rate was most dramatic for silicon contents up to 1.1 wt pct. Further additions of silicon of up to 2.64 wt pct also resulted in significant decreases in creep rate.

The manufacture of a radio frequency filter box using high pressure die casting (HPDC) is compared to the traditional high speed machining route. This paper describes an industrial exercise that concluded HPDC to be an economical and appropriate method to produce larger volumes of thin-walled telecommunications components. Modifications to the component design were made to make the component suitable for the HPDC process. Development of the die design through simulation modelling is described. The wrought alloy was replaced by near-eutectic Al-Si die casting alloy that was found to give better temperature stability performance. Apart from the economic benefits, HPDC was found to give lower filter efficiency losses through better surface finish. The effects of HPDC process variables, such as intensification pressure and injection piston velocity, on component quality, particularly porosity levels, were investigated. The pressure was analysed in terms of HPDC machine set pressure and the pressure measured in the die cavity by pressure sensors. Porosity was found to decrease with increased pressure and slightly increase with higher casting velocities.

From recent published data, it is still unclear whether combining additions of Na and Sr have synergistic effects or deleterious interactions, This paper clarifies the interactions between these two modifiers and investigates the effects of such interactions on alloy solidification and castability. It was found that combined additions of Sr and Na do not appear to cause improvement of the modification of the eutectic microstructure even after only a short period after addition. Na addition may promote Sr vaporization and/or oxidation kinetically. leading to a quicker loss of both modifiers, which is blamed for the rapid loss of the modification effect during melt holding. Quenching trials during the eutectic arrest indicate that addition of Sr into Na-modified melts does not alter the eutectic solidification behaviour The effect of Na on eutectic solidification dominates, and the eutectic is observed to evolve with a significant dependency on the thermal gradient, Combining Sr and Na additions produced no beneficial effects on porosity and casting defects. Iron is the most common and detrimental impurity in aluminum casting alloys and has long been associated with an increase in casting defects. While the negative effects of iron are clear, the mechanism involved is not fully understood. It is generally believed to be associated with the formation of Fe-rich intermetallic phases. Many factors, including alloy composition, melt superheating, Sr modification, cooling, rate, and oxide bifilms, could play a role. In the present investigation, the interactions between iron and each individual element commonly present in aluminum casting alloys, were investigated using a combination of thermal analysis and interrupted quenching tests. The Fe-rich intermetallic phases were characterized using optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, and electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), and the results were compared with the predictions by Thermocalc. It was found that increasing the iron content changes the precipitation sequence of the beta phase, leading to the precipitation of coarse binary beta platelets at a higher temperature. In contrast, manganese, silicon, and strontium appear to suppress the coarse binary beta platelets, and Mn further promotes the formation of a more compact and less harmful a phase. They are therefore expected to reduce the negative effects of the phase. While reported in the literature, no effect of P on the amount of beta platelets was observed. Finally, attempts are made to correlate the Fe-rich intermetallic phases to the formation of casting defects. The role of the beta phase as a nucleation site for eutectic Si and the role of the oxide bifilms and AIP as a heterogeneous substrate of Fe intermetallics are also discussed.

Soldering alloys based oft the Sn-Cu alloy system are amongst the most favourable lead-free alternatives due to a range of attractive properties. Trace additions of Ni have been found to significantly improve the soldering characteristics of these alloys (reduced bridging etc.). This paper examines the mechanisms underlying the improvement in soldering properties of Sn-0.7 mass%Cu eutectic alloys modified with concentrations of Ni ranging front 0 to 1000 ppm. The alloys were investigated by thermal analysis during solidification, as well as optical/SEM microanalyses of fully solidified samples anti samples quenched during solidification. It is concluded that Ni additions dramatically alter the nucleation patterns and solidification behaviour of the Sn-Cu6Sn5 eutectic anti that these changes are related to the superior soldering characteristics of the Ni-modified Sn-0.7 mass%Cu alloys.

This paper investigates the relationship between mechanical properties and microstructure in high pressure die cast binary Mg-Al alloys. As-cast test bars produced using high pressure die casting have been tested in tension in order to determine the properties for castings produced using this technique. It has been shown that increasing aluminium levels results in increases in yield strength and a decrease in ductility for these alloys. Higher aluminium levels also result in a decrease in creep rate at 150 degrees C. It has also been shown that an increase in aluminium levels results in an increase in the volume fraction of eutectic Mg17Al12 in the microstructure.
A rheological assessment of the effect of trace level Ni additions on the solidification of Sn-0.7Cu
Resumo:
The influence of trace level Ni additions on the eutectic solidification mode of Sn-0.7Cu has been studied using continuous torque experiments during solidification. The solid fraction at which resistance to paddle rotation at the thermal centre of the sample occurs is related to the spatial distribution of solid during solidification. The results indicate that a transition in solidification mode occurs in the range 0-300 ppm Ni. Growth occurs antiparallel to heat flow from near the mould walls in the Ni-free alloy, while equiaxed growth from distributed centres dominates in alloys containing at least 300 ppm Ni. The effect of Ca addition on the microstructure, physical characteristics (density/porosity), and mechanical properties (tensile and impact strength) has been investigated in an Al-7Si-0.3Mg-xFe (x = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7) alloy. The size of Al-Fe intermetallic platelets (beta-Al5FeSi) increased with increasing Fe content. The addition of Ca modified the eutectic microstructure and also reduced the size of intermetallic Fe-platelets, causing improved elongation and impact strengths. A low level of Ca addition (39 ppm) reduced the porosity of the alloys. The tensile strength was decreased marginally with Ca addition. However, Ca addition improved the ductility of the alloy by 18.3, 16.7, and 44 pet and the impact strength by 44, 48, and 15.8 pct for Fe contents of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 pct, respectively.

Strontium is the most widely used and a very effective element for modifying the morphology of eutectic silicon, while Ti and B are commonly present in the commercial grain refiners used for Al-Si alloys. Systematic studies on the effects of combined additions of Sr and different AlTiB grain refiners on the Al + Si eutectic and primary aluminium solidification have been performed. While slight coarsening of both eutectic Si and primary aluminium grains occurs during holding, no obvious interactions are observed between Sr and AlTiB grain refiners when the addition level of grain refiners is low. As a result, a well-modified and grain refined structure was obtained. However, strong negative interactions between Sr and Al1.5Ti1.5B3 were observed as the addition level of the grain refiner increases. It was found that these interactions have a much more profound impact on the eutectic solidification than the primary Al solidification. The melt treated with combined additions of Sr and Al1.5Ti1.5B still shows good grain refinement efficiency even after losing its modification completely. The mechanism responsible for such negative interactions is further discussed. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Analysis of intra- and inter-phase distribution of modifying elements in aluminium-silicon alloys is difficult due to the low concentrations used. This research utilises a mu-XRF (X-ray fluorescence) technique at the SPring-8 synchrotron radiation facility X-ray source and reveals that the modifying element strontium segregates exclusively to the eutectic silicon phase and the distribution of strontium within this phase is relatively homogeneous. This has important implications for the fundamental mechanisms of eutectic modification in hypoeutectic aluminium-silicon alloys. (c) 2006 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. The objective of this research was to investigate the oxidation of organic compounds in molten alkali metal hydroxides containing manganates. It has been shown that controlled oxidation can be readily achieved with high specificity to give products in high yield with very short reaction times. The concurrent changes in the melt were monitored using a vibrating platinum indicator electrode with a quazi-reference electrode which was successfully developed for use in molten (Na-K)OH eutectic at 523K. Henry's Law constants for water in the molten eutectic system (Na-K)OH have been measured and used to calculate the water concentration in the melt. The electrochemistry of manganates in molten (Na-K)OH eutectic at 523K has been studied using the vibrating platinum electrode, and the existence of the species Mn(II), Mn(II!), Mn(IV), Mn(V) and Mn(VI) in such melts has been investigated at various water concentrations. The half-wave potentials of the voltammetric waves were measured versus the cathodic limit of the melt. The stability of Mn(V) or Mn(VI) in the melt was achieved by varying the water concentration. A range of organic chemicals has been passed through molten (Na-K)OH at 523K and the reactions of these chemicals with the melt have been studied. The same organics were then passed through molten (Na-K)OH containing stabilized Mn(V) or Mn{VI) without violent reaction. Methanol, allyl alcohol, propane 1, 2 diol, I-heptene and acetone were oxidized by Mn(V) and Mn(VI). Ethanol was only oxidized by Mn(VI), isopropanol and benzyl alcohol were only oxidized by Mn(V). Npropanol, butanol, 2 methyl propan-2-ol, n-hexane, n-heptane toluene and cyclohexane were unchanged by both Mn(V) and Mn(VI). Detailed experiments have been performed on the reactions of ethanol, iso-propanol and methanol in molten (Na-K)OH containing stabilized Mrt(V) or Mn(VI), and reaction mechanisms have been postulated. Ethanol and iso-propanol were oxidized to acetaldehyde and acetone respectively with a potential for useful chemical process. The oxidation of methanol could be developed as a basis for an industrial methanol disposal process.

A variety of methods have been reviewed for obtaining parallel or perpendicular alignment in liquid-crystal cells. Some of these methods have been selected and developed and were used in polarised spectroscopy, dielectric and electro-optic studies. Also, novel dielectric and electro-optic cells were constructed for use over a range of temperature. Dielectric response of thin layers of E7 and E8 (eutectic mixture liquid-crystals) have been measured in the frequency range (12 Hz-100 kHz) and over a range of temperature (183-337K). Dielectric spectra were also obtained for supercooled E7 and E8 in the Hz and kHz range. When the measuring electric field was parallel to the nematic director, one loss peak (low-frequency relaxation process) was observed for E7 and for E8, that exhibits a Debye-type behaviour in the supercooled systems. When the measuring electric field was perpendicular to the nematic director, two resolved dielectric processes have been observed. The phase transitions, effective molecular polarisabilities, anisotropy of polarisabilities and order parameters of three liquid crystal homologs (5CB, 6CB, and 7CB), 60CB and three eutectic nematic mixtures E7, E8, and E607 were calculated using optical and density data measured at several temperatures. The order parameters calculated using the different methods of Vuks, Neugebauer, Saupe-Maier, and Palffy-Muhoray are nearly the same for the liquid crystals considered in the present study. Also, the interrelationship between density and refractive index and the molecular structure of these liquid crystals were established. Accurate dielectric and dipole results of a range of liquid-crystal forming molecules at several temperatures have reported. The role of the cyano-end group, biphenyl core, and flexible tail in molecular association, were investigated using the dielectric method for some molecules which have a structural relationship to the nematogens. Analysis of the dielectric data for solution of the liquid-crystals indicated a high molecular association, comparable to that observed in the nematic or isotropic phases. Electro-optic Kerr effect were investigated for some alkyl cyanobiphenyls, their nematic mixtures and the eutectic mixture liquid-crystals E7 and E8 in the isotropic phase and solution. The Kerr constant of these liquid crystals found to be very high at the nematic-isotropic transition temperatures as the molecules are expected to be highly ordered close to phase transition temperatures. Dynamic Kerr effect behaviour and transient molecular reorientation were also observed in thin layers of some alkyl cyanobiphenyls. Dichroic ratio R and order parameters of solutions containing some azo and anthraquinone dyes in the nematic solvent (E7 and E8), were investigated by the measurement of the intensity of the absorption bands in the visible region of parallel aligned samples. The effective factors on the dichroic ratio of the dyes dissolved in the nematic solvents were determined and discussed.
