Three essays on financial markets

This thesis examines stock price behaviour on the New York Stock Exchange.  The thesis develops modelsto show that firms on the stock exchange are different with respect to volatility and changes in calender dates.  Moreover, the thesis shows that firm returns are affected differently by oil prices.

‘Else-where’ : essays in art, architecture, and cultural production 2002-2011

“Else-where”: Essays in Art, Architecture, and Cultural Production 2002–2011 is a synoptic survey of the representational values given to art, architecture, and cultural production at the closing of the twentieth century and the opening of the twenty-first. Written primarily as a critique of what is suppressed in architecture and what is disclosed in art, the essays are informed by the passage out of post-structuralism and its disciplinary analogues toward the Real (denoted over the course of the studies as the “Real-Irreal,” or “Else-where”). The essays collected in “Else-where” cross various disciplines (inclusive of landscape architecture, architecture, and visual art) to develop a nuanced critique of a renascent formal regard and elective exit from nihilism in art and architecture that is also an invocation of the highest coordinates given to the arts – that is, formal ontology as speculative intelligence itself, or the return of the universal as utopian thought “here-and-now.”

Essays on the economics of natural disasters and political institutions

This thesis examines how natural disasters—earthquakes, floods and storms—affect democracy by altering economic outcomes. The results indicate that earthquakes and floods improve the level of democracy, while storms lead to non-democratic transitions, particularly in island countries.

Essays on social capital and poverty in Bangladesh

The thesis examines the role of social capital in determining a number of socio-economic factors in Bangladesh. It uses cross-sectional data of 5600 extreme poor households and finds that social capital plays an important role in improving health and hygienic behaviour, and labour market outcomes during lean season.

Essays in political and development economics

 This research analyses the role of terrain ruggedness and elite domination as obstacles undermining the cooperation and cohesiveness of groups in societies. Specifically, terrain ruggedness hinders state capacity development and fiscal decentralisation could mitigate this negative effect. Additionally, it proves the role of elites in the selection of economic policies.

Three essays on stock returns and inflation - Australian evidence

Results of this thesis suggest that a significant negative relation between stock returns and inflation identified in Australia during ‘inflation targeting’ is mainly due to an incidence of ‘flight to safety’. Furthermore, the impact of inflation news on stock returns is industry-sector dependent. Specifically, in Australia rising inflation seems to be good news for Financials, but bad news for Materials.
