The T2K experiment has observed electron neutrino appearance in a muon neutrino beam produced 295 km from the Super-Kamiokande detector with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV. A total of 28 electron neutrino events were detected with an energy distribution consistent with an appearance signal, corresponding to a significance of 7.3σ when compared to 4.92 ± 0.55 expected background events. In the PMNS mixing model, the electron neutrino appearance signal depends on several parameters including three mixing angles θ12, θ23, θ13, a mass difference Δm232 and a CP violating phase δCP. In this neutrino oscillation scenario, assuming |Δm232|=2.4×10−3 eV2, sin2θ23=0.5, δCP=0, and Δm232>0 (Δm232<0), a best-fit value of sin22θ13 = 0.140+0.038−0.032 (0.170+0.045−0.037) is obtained.

The gradually increased atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) has thrown the carbonate chemistry off balance and resulted in decreased seawater pH in marine ecosystem, termed ocean acidification (OA). Anthropogenic OA is postulated to affect the physiology of many marine calcifying organisms. However, the susceptibility and metabolic pathways of change in most calcifying animals are still far from being well understood. In this work, the effects of exposure to elevated pCO2 were characterized in gills and hepatopancreas of Crassostrea gigas using integrated proteomic and metabolomic approaches. Metabolic responses indicated that high CO2 exposure mainly caused disturbances in energy metabolism and osmotic regulation marked by differentially altered ATP, glucose, glycogen, amino acids and organic osmolytes in oysters, and the depletions of ATP in gills and the accumulations of ATP, glucose and glycogen in hepatopancreas accounted for the difference in energy distribution between these two tissues. Proteomic responses suggested that OA could not only affect energy and primary metabolisms, stress responses and calcium homeostasis in both tissues, but also influence the nucleotide metabolism in gills and cytoskeleton structure in hepatopancreas. This study demonstrated that the combination of proteomics and metabolomics could provide an insightful view into the effects of OA on oyster C. gigas. BIOLOGICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The gradually increased atmospheric CO2 partial pressure (pCO2) has thrown the carbonate chemistry off balance and resulted in decreased seawater pH in marine ecosystem, termed ocean acidification (OA). Anthropogenic OA is postulated to affect the physiology of many marine calcifying organisms. However, the susceptibility and metabolic pathways of change in most calcifying animals are still far from being understood. To our knowledge, few studies have focused on the responses induced by pCO2 at both protein and metabolite levels. The pacific oyster C. gigas, widely distributed throughout most of the world's oceans, is a model organism for marine environmental science. In the present study, an integrated metabolomic and proteomic approach was used to elucidate the effects of ocean acidification on Pacific oyster C. gigas, hopefully shedding light on the physiological responses of marine mollusk to the OA stress.

AbstractThe main subject under research in this Thesis is the study of the dynamic behaviourof a structure using models that describe the energy distribution betweenthe components of the structure and the applicability of these models to incipientdamage detection.Dynamic tests are a way to extract information about the properties of astructure. If we have a model of the structure, it can be updated in order toreproduce the same response as in experimental tests, within a certain degree ofaccuracy. After damage occurs, the response will change to some extent; modelupdating to the new test conditions can help to detect changes in the structuralmodel leading to the conclusión that damage has occurred. In this way incipient damage detection is possible if we are able to detect srnallvariations in the model parameters. It turns out that the high frequency regimeis highly relevant for incipient damage detection, because the response is verysensitive to small structural geometric details. The characteristic length associatedwith the response is proportional to the propagation speed of acoustic waves insidethe solid, but inversely proportional to the excitation frequency. At the same time, this fact makes the application of a Finite Element Method impractical due to thehigh computational cost.A widely used model in engineering when dealing with the high frequencyresponse is SEA (Statistical Energy Analysis). SEA applies the energy balance toeach structural component, relating their vibrational energy with the dissipatedpower and the transmitted power between the different components; their summust be equal to the input power to each of them. This relationship is linear andcharacterized by loss factors. The magnitudes considered in the response shouldbe averaged in geometry, frequency and time.SEA model updating to test data is equivalent to calculating the loss factorsthat provide a better fit to the experimental response. This is formulated as an illconditionedinverse problem. In this Thesis a new updating algorithm is proposedfor the study of the high frequency response regime in terms of parameters withphysical meaning such as the internal dissipation factors, modal densities andcharacteristic coupling stiffness. The loss factors are then calculated from theseparameters. The approach is developed entirely in this Thesis and is mainlybased on a high modal density asumption, that is to say, a large number of modescontributes to the response.General SEA theory establishes the validity of the model under the asumptionof very restrictive external excitations. These should behave as a local white noise. This kind of excitation is difficult to reproduce in an experimental environment. In this Thesis we show that in practical cases this assumption can be relaxed, inparticular, results are good enough when the structure is excited with a harmonicstep function.Under these assumptions an optimization algorithm is developed for SEAmodel updating to a transient test when external loads are harmonic step functions. This algorithm considers the response not only in a single frequency band, but also for several of them simultaneously.A damage index is defined that measures the change in the loss factor matrixwhen a damage has occurred at a certain location in the structure. The structuresconsidered in this study are built with damaged beam elements; as we are dealingwith the high frequency response, the numerical simulation is implemented witha Spectral Element Method. It has therefore been necessary to develop a spectralbeam damaged element as well. The reported results show that damage detectionis possible with this algorithm, moreover, damage location is also possible withina certain degree of accuracy.

Abstract: Objectives: To analyze the distribution of energy deposited in a tissue when this is irradiated with a low power laser and to study the minimum characteristics that manufacturers of low power laser therapy equipments should include to estimate the dosage. Material and methods: Monte Carlo simulation was performed to determine the absorption location of the laser energy. The diffusion theory was used to estimate penetration depth and mean free path. Variation of this distribution was studied based on three different skin types (Caucasians, Asians and Afroamericans) and for two different anatomic locations: palm and volar forearm. Information given by several manufactures of low power laser therapy equipments has been analyzed. Results: Infrared (810 nm) laser radiation is mainly absorbed in a skin layer of thickness 1.9±0.2mm for Caucasians, from 1.73±0.08mm (volar forearm) to 1.80±0.11mm (palm) for Asians, and from 1.25±0.09mm (volar forearm) to 1.65±0.2mm (palm) for Afroamericans. The light mean free path is lower than 0.69±0.09mm for all cases. The laser beam characteristics (beam shape, energy distribution on a transversal section, divergence, incidence angle, etc.) are not usually specified by the manufacturers. Only beam size (ranging from 0.08 to 1cm2) is given in some cases. Discussion and conclusions: Depending on the low power laser therapy equipment, on the patient and on the anatomic area to be treated, the staff should adapt the recommended dosage for each individual case.

ABSTRACT This Thesis explores the potential of speech technologies for the detection of clinical disorders connected to the upper airway. The study of speech traditionally covers both the production process and post processing of the signals involved, from the speaker up to the listener, offering an alternative path to study these pathologies. The fact that utterances embed not just the encoded message but also information about the speaker, has motivated the development of automatic systems oriented to the identification and verificaton the speaker’s identity. These have recently been boosted and reoriented either towards the characterization of traits that are common to several speakers, or to the differences between records of the same speaker collected under different conditions. The first are particularly relevant to this Thesis as these patterns could reveal the presence of features that are related to a common condition shared among different speakers, regardless of their identity. Such is the case faced in this Thesis, where the traits identified would relate to a particular pathology, directly connected to the speech production system. The Obstructive Sleep Apnea syndrome (OSA) is a paradigmatic case for analysis. It is a disorder with high prevalence among adults and affecting a larger number of them as they grow older. Patients suffering from this disorder experience episodes of involuntary cessation of breath during sleep that may last a few seconds and reproduce throughout the night, preventing proper rest. In the case of obstructive apnea, these episodes are related to the collapse of the pharynx, which interrupts the air flow. Currently, OSA diagnosis is done through a polysomnographic study, which focuses on the analysis of apnea episodes during sleep, requiring the patient to stay at the hospital for the whole night. The complexity and high cost of the procedures involved, combined with the waiting lists, have evidenced the need for screening techniques, which perhaps would not achieve outstanding performance rates but would allow clinicians to reorganize these lists ranking patients according to the severity of their condition. Among others, imaging diagnosis and anthropometric characterization of patients have evidenced the existence of anatomical patterns related to OSA that have direct influence on speech. Contributions devoted to the study of how this disorder affects scpeech are scarce and somehow contradictory. However, since the late 1980s the existence of specific patterns related to articulation, phonation and resonance is known. By that time these descriptions were virtually useless when coming to the development of an automatic system, but pointed out the existence of a link between speech and OSA. In recent years automatic processing techniques have evolved and are now able to identify significant differences in the speech of OSAS patients when compared to records from healthy subjects. Nevertheless, little is known about the connection between these new results with those published in the past and the pathogenesis of the OSA syndrome. This Thesis is aimed to progress beyond the previous research done in this area by addressing: the study of how OSA affects patients’ speech, the enhancement of automatic OSA classification based on speech analysis, and its integration with the information embedded in the predictors generally used by clinicians in preliminary patients’ examination. The first two tasks, though may appear symbiotic at first, are quite different. While studying the connection between speech and OSA requires simple narrow models that can be easily interpreted, classification requires larger models including a large number dimensions for the characterization and posterior identification of the observed patterns. Anyhow, it is clear that any progress made in the first task should allow us to improve our performance on the second one, and that the incorporation of the predictors used by clinicians shall contribute in this same direction. The Thesis considers both continuous and sustained speech analysis, to exploit the synergies and differences between them. On continuous speech analysis, a conventional speech processing scheme, designed and evaluated before this Thesis, was taken as a baseline. Over this initial system several alternative representations of the speech information were proposed, optimized and tested to select those more suitable for the characterization of OSA-specific patterns. Evidences were found on the existence of a connection between OSA and the fundamental constituents of the speech: the formants. Experimental results proved that the success of the proposed solution is well explained by the ability of speech representations to describe these specific OSA-related components, ignoring the noisy ones as well those presenting low discrimination capabilities. The resulting scheme obtained a 18% error rate, on a classification scheme significantly less complex than those described in the literature and operating on a single speech record. Regarding the connection between OSA and the observed patterns, it was necessary to consider inter-and intra-group differences for this analysis, and to focus on the articulation, replacing the complex classification models by the long-term average spectra. Results clearly point to certain regions on the frequency axis, suggesting the existence of a systematic narrowing in the vocal tract section at the oropharynx. This was already described in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. Regarding sustained speech, similar experiments as those conducted on continuous speech were reproduced on sustained phonations of vowel / a /. Results were qualitatively similar to the previous ones, though in this case perfomance rates were found to be noticeably lower. Trying to derive further knowledge from this result, experiments on the long-term average spectra and intraand inter-group variability ratios were also reproduced on sustained speech records. Results on both experiments showed significant differences from the previous ones obtained from continuous speech which could explain the differences observed on peformance. However, sustained speech also provided the opportunity to study phonation within the controlled framework it provides. This was also identified in the literature as a source of information for the detection of OSA. In this study it was found that, for the available dataset, no sistematic differences related to phonation could be found between the two groups of speakers. Only those dimensions which relate energy distribution along the frequency axis provided significant differences, pointing once again towards the direction of resonant components. Once classification schemes on both continuous and sustained speech were developed, the Thesis addressed their combination into a single classification system. Under the assumption that the information in continuous and sustained speech is fundamentally different, it should be possible to successfully merge the two of them. This was tested through a simple fusion scheme which obtained a 88.6% correct classification (11.4% error rate), which represents a significant improvement over the state of the art. Finally, the combination of this classifier with the variables used by clinicians obtained a 91.3% accuracy (8.7% error rate). This is within the range of alternative, but costly and intrusive schemes, which unlike the one proposed can not be used in the preliminary assessment of patients’ condition. In the end, this Thesis has shed new light on the underlying connection between OSA and speech, and evidenced the degree of maturity reached by speech technology on OSA characterization and detection, leaving the door open for future research which shall continue in the multiple directions that have been pointed out and left as future work.

An analytical expression is derived for the electron thermionic current from heated metals by using a non equilibrium, modified Kappa energy distribution for electrons. This isotropic distribution characterizes the long high energy tails in the electron energy spectrum for low values of the index ? and also accounts for the Fermi energy for the metal electrons. The limit for large ? recovers the classical equilibrium Fermi-Dirac distribution. The predicted electron thermionic current for low ? increases between four and five orders of magnitude with respect to the predictions of the equilibrium Richardson-Dushmann current. The observed departures from this classical expression, also recovered for large ?, would correspond to moderate values of this index. The strong increments predicted by the thermionic emission currents suggest that, under appropriate conditions, materials with non equilibrium electron populations would become more efficient electron emitters at low temperatures.

We present coordinated multiwavelength observations of the bright, nearby BL Lacertae object Mrk 421 taken in 2013 January–March, involving GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, VERITAS, and other collaborations and instruments, providing data from radio to very high energy (VHE) γ-ray bands. NuSTAR yielded previously unattainable sensitivity in the 3–79 keV range, revealing that the spectrum softens when the source is dimmer until the X-ray spectral shape saturates into a steep G » 3 power law, with no evidence for an exponential cutoff or additional hard components up "aprox" 80keV. For the first time, we observed both the synchrotron and the inverse-Compton peaks of the spectral energy distribution (SED) simultaneously shifted to frequencies below the typical quiescent state by an order of magnitude. The fractional variability as a function of photon energy shows a double-bump structure that relates to the two bumps of the broadband SED. In each bump, the variability increases with energy, which, in the framework of the synchrotron self-Compton model, implies that the electrons with higher energies are more variable. The measured multi band variability, the significant X-ray-toVHE correlation down to some of the lowest fluxes ever observed in both bands, the lack of correlation between optical/UV and X-ray flux, the low degree of polarization and its significant (random) variations, the short estimated electron cooling time, and the significantly longer variability timescale observed in the NuSTAR light curves point toward in situ electron acceleration and suggest that there are multiple compact regions contributing to the broadband emission of Mrk 421 during low-activity states.

Context. During the course of a large spectroscopic survey of X-ray active late-type stars in the solar neighbourhood, we discovered four lithium-rich stars packed within just a few degrees on the sky. Although located in a sky area rich in CO molecular regions and dark clouds, the Cepheus-Cassiopeia complex, these very young stars are projected several degrees away from clouds in front of an area void of interstellar matter. As such, they are very good "isolated" T Tauri star candidates. Aims. We present optical observations of these stars conducted with 1-2 m class telescopes. We acquired high-resolution optical spectra as well as photometric data allowing us to investigate in detail their nature and physical parameters with the aim of testing the "runaway" and "in-situ" formation scenarios. Their kinematical properties are also analyzed to investigate their possible connection to already known stellar kinematic groups. Methods. We use the cross-correlation technique and other tools developed by us to derive accurate radial and rotational velocities and perform an automatic spectral classification. The spectral subtraction technique is used to infer chromospheric activity level in the Hα line core and clean the spectra of photospheric lines before measuring the equivalent width of the lithium absorption line. Results. Both physical (lithium content, chromospheric, and coronal activities) and kinematical indicators show that all stars are very young, with ages probably in the range 10-30 Myr. In particular, the spectral energy distribution of TYC4496-780-1 displays a strong near-and far-infrared excess, typical of T Tauri stars still surrounded by an accretion disc. They also share the same Galactic motion, proving that they form a homogeneous moving group of stars with the same origin. Conclusions. The most plausible explanation of how these "isolated" T Tauri stars formed is the "in-situ" model, although accurate distances are needed to clarify their connection with the Cepheus-Cassiopeia complex. The discovery of this loose association of "isolated" T Tauri stars can help to shed light on atypical formation processes of stars and planets in low-mass clouds.

Context. Since its launch, the X-ray and γ-ray observatory INTEGRAL satellite has revealed a new class of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXB) displaying fast flares and hosting supergiant companion stars. Optical and infrared (OIR) observations in a multi-wavelength context are essential to understand the nature and evolution of these newly discovered celestial objects. Aims. The goal of this multiwavelength study (from ultraviolet to infrared) is to characterise the properties of IGR J16465−4507, to confirm its HMXB nature and that it hosts a supergiant star. Methods. We analysed all OIR, photometric and spectroscopic observations taken on this source, carried out at ESO facilities. Results. Using spectroscopic data, we constrained the spectral type of the companion star between B0.5 and B1 Ib, settling the debate on the true nature of this source. We measured a high rotation velocity of v = 320 ± 8km s-1 from fitting absorption and emission lines in a stellar spectral model. We then built a spectral energy distribution from photometric observations to evaluate the origin of the different components radiating at each energy range. Conclusions. We finally show that, having accurately determined the spectral type of the early-B supergiant in IGR J16465−4507, we firmly support its classification as an intermediate supergiant fast X-ray transient (SFXT).

A dual resistance model with distribution of either barrier or pore diffusional activation energy is proposed in this work for gas transport in carbon molecular sieve (CMS) micropores. This is a novel approach in which the equilibrium is homogeneous, but the kinetics is heterogeneous. The model seems to provide a possible explanation for the concentration dependence of the thermodynamically corrected barrier and pore diffusion coefficients observed in previous studies from this laboratory on gas diffusion in CMS.(1.2) The energy distribution is assumed to follow the gamma distribution function. It is shown that the energy distribution model can fully capture the behavior described by the empirical model established in earlier studies to account for the concentration dependence of thermodynamically corrected barrier and pore diffusion coefficients. A methodology is proposed for extracting energy distribution parameters, and it is further shown that the extracted energy distribution parameters can effectively predict integral uptake and column breakthrough profiles over a wide range of operating pressures.

The coupling of sandy beach aquifers with the swash zone in the vicinity of the water table exit point is investigated through simultaneous measurements of the instantaneous shoreline (swash front) location, pore pressures and the water table exit point. The field observations reveal new insights into swash-aquifer coupling not previously gleaned from measurements of pore pressure only. In particular, for the case where the exit point is seaward of the observation point, the pore pressure response is correlated with the distance between the exit point and the shoreline in that when the distance is large the rate of pressure drop is fast and when the distance is small the rate decreases. The observations expose limitations in a simple model describing exit point dynamics which is based only on the force balance on a particle of water at the sand surface and neglects subsurface pressures. A new modified form of the model is shown to significantly improve the model-data comparison through a parameterization of the effects of capillarity into the aquifer storage coefficient. The model enables sufficiently accurate predictions of the exit point to determine when the swash uprush propagates over a saturated or a partially saturated sand surface, potentially an important factor in the morphological evolution of the beach face. Observations of the shoreward propagation of the swash-induced pore pressure waves ahead of the runup limit shows that the magnitude of the pressure fluctuation decays exponentially and that there is a linear increase in time lags, behavior similar to that of tidally induced water table waves. The location of the exit point and the intermittency of wave runup events is also shown to be significant in terms of the shore-normal energy distribution. Seaward of the mean exit point location, peak energies are small because of the saturated sand surface within the seepage face acting as a "rigid lid'' and limiting pressure fluctuations. Landward of the mean exit point the peak energies grow before decreasing landward of the maximum shoreline position.

The estimation of a concentration-dependent diffusion coefficient in a drying process is known as an inverse coefficient problem. The solution is sought wherein the space-average concentration is known as function of time (mass loss monitoring). The problem is stated as the minimization of a functional and gradient-based algorithms are used to solve it. Many numerical and experimental examples that demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach are presented. Thin slab drying was carried out in an isothermal drying chamber built in our laboratory. The diffusion coefficients of fructose obtained with the present method are compared with existing literature results.
