Dental Treatment Services Scheme (DTSS) – Service Utilisation and Treatment Need (Lot 9) Since 2002, following agreement between the Department of Health and Children and the GMS Payments Board, data from the DTSS payments database has been transferred routinely to the Oral Health Services Research Centre (OHSRC), in University College, Cork for analysis. Queries have been developed in the OHSRC to provide individual level data on the treatments provided to patients, such as examinations, extractions, fillings, scale and polish, removal/amputation of roots, root treatment (upper and lower anterior teeth), radiographs, partial dentures and full dentures, and also data on the characteristics of the dentist providing services. Nicotinamide Phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT) Inhibitors as Therapeutics: Rationales, Controversies, Clinical Experience.

Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) biosynthesis from nicotinamide is used by mammalian cells to replenish their NAD+ stores and to avoid unwanted nicotinamide accumulation. Pharmacological inhibition of nicotinamide phosphoribosyltransferase (NAMPT), the key enzyme in this biosynthetic pathway, almost invariably leads to intracellular NAD+ depletion and, when protracted, to ATP shortage and cell demise. Cancer cells and activated immune cells express high levels of NAMPT and are highly susceptible to NAMPT inhibitors, as shown by the activity of these agents in models of malignant and inflammatory disorders. As the spectrum of conditions which could benefit from pharmacological NAMPT inhibition becomes broader, the mechanisms accounting for their activity are also eventually becoming apparent, including the induction of autophagy and the impairment of Ca(2+) - and NF-κB-dependent signaling. Here, we discuss the rationales for exploiting NAMPT inhibitors in cancer and inflammatory diseases and provide an overview of the preclinical and clinical studies in which these agents have been evaluated.

L'hémopéritoine spontané: diagnostic, pronostic et thérapeutiques possibles [Spontaneous hemoperitoneum: diagnosis, prognosis and possible therapeutics]

We report the case of a 58-year-old diabetic man admitted to the hospital in a comatose state due to medicamentous hypoglycemia in a context of hypovolemic acute renal failure. Hypovolemia was due to hemoperitoneum in a alcoholic patient with cirrhotic hepatic failure. CT-scan and arterial angiographies revealed a voluminous isolated hepatic mass with active bleeding suggesting the diagnosis of spontaneous bleeding from a hepatocellular carcinoma. The hemorrhage resolved after selective arterial embolization, but the patient died two weeks later from an infectious cause. The differential diagnosis of a spontaneous hemoperitoneum and possibilities of treatment in the case of ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma are discussed.
