Southern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee 8th April, 1981

This is the report from the Southern Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 8th April, 1981. It includes the report by the area fisheries officer on fisheries activities between December 1980 to February, 1981. This comments on river conditions and fishing, and an update on Hollingworth and the pilot hatchery, salmon cages in Dalton-in-Furness, and Langcliffe hatchery. Finally the report adds about stockings of coarse fish and non migratory trout added by the Angling Associations, fish mortalities and fish disease. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

Central Area Fisheries Advisory Committee 13th October, 1982

This is the report from the Central Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 13th October, 1982. The report contains sections on Rod and Line Fishing Licences Format, Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 for River Lune, a proposed Pike Ranching Scheme on Esthwaite Water and Fisheries Activities. The section on fisheries activities is reported by the area fisheries officer and includes river conditions and fishing, migratory movement, hatcheries, (Middleton, Dalton in Furness, Langcliffe), stocking, poaching and management works. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the report from the Central Area Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 30th March, 1983. The report contains sections on Fyke nets and otters, Whirling disease, the decline of Salmon and Sea Trout Catches in Furness and South Cumbria Fisheries Association, spawning tributaries, Langcliffe hatchery, and fisheries activities. The section on Fisheries Activities is reported by the area fisheries officer and includes river conditions and fishing, migratory fish movement, Hatcheries (Middleton hatchery, salmon cages in Dalton and Furness, salmon and sea trout), stocking, fish disease, poaching, management work and prosecutions. Kent estuary survey 18th August 1981

This is the Kent estuary survey 18th July 1981 produced by the North West Water Authority in 1981. The report focuses on a tidal cycle survey carried out on the Kent estuary on the 18th August, 1981. The chemical water quality at Arnside Pier and at New Barns was, on the whole, acceptable. However, samples taken downstream of the outfall at low water for total coliforms and E. coli were all above the EEC mandatory level whilst those for faecal streptococci were all above the guideline value. This document shows chemical and bacteriological data analysed at Kent estuary such chloride, dissolved oxygen, BOD, ammonia, nitrate, phosphate, total coliforms, E. coli and Faecal streptococci.

Design, construction and evaluation of systems to predict risk in obstetrics.

We present a systematic, practical approach to developing risk prediction systems, suitable for use with large databases of medical information. An important part of this approach is a novel feature selection algorithm which uses the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve to measure the expected discriminative power of different sets of predictor variables. We describe this algorithm and use it to select variables to predict risk of a specific adverse pregnancy outcome: failure to progress in labour. Neural network, logistic regression and hierarchical Bayesian risk prediction models are constructed, all of which achieve close to the limit of performance attainable on this prediction task. We show that better prediction performance requires more discriminative clinical information rather than improved modelling techniques. It is also shown that better diagnostic criteria in clinical records would greatly assist the development of systems to predict risk in pregnancy.

Application of neural networks to the ranking of perinatal variables influencing birthweight.

In this paper we compare Multi-Layer Perceptrons (a neural network type) with Multivariate Linear Regression in predicting birthweight from nine perinatal variables which are thought to be related. Results show, that seven of the nine variables, i.e., gestational age, mother's body-mass index (BMI), sex of the baby, mother's height, smoking, parity and gravidity, are related to birthweight. We found no significant relationship between birthweight and each of the two variables, i.e., maternal age and social class.
