In this work, one-dimensional flow-acoustic analysis of two basic configurations of air cleaners, (i) Rectangular Axial-Inlet, Axial-Outlet (RAIAO) and (ii) Rectangular Transverse-Inlet, Transverse-Outlet (RTITO), has been presented. This 1-D analytical approach has been verified with the help of 3-D FEM based software. Through subtraction of the acoustic performance of the bare plenum (without filter element) from that of the complete air cleaner box, the solitary performance of the filter element has been evaluated. Part of the present analysis illustrates that the analytical formulation remains effective even with offset positioning of the air pipes from the centre of the cross section of the air cleaner. The 1-D analytical tool computes much faster than its 3-D simulation counterpart. The present analysis not only predicts the acoustical impact of mean flow, but it also depicts the scenario with increased resistance of the filter element. Thus, the proposed 1-D analysis would help in the design of acoustically efficient air cleaners for automotive applications. (C) 2011 Institute of Noise Control Engineering.

Through this paper we experimentally demonstrate the fabrication of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) chemical sensor to detect and determine the manganese concentration in water and compare our results with sophisticated spectroscopic methods, such as atomic absorption spectrometry and the inductively coupled plasma method. Here we propose a simple method to develop a thin layer of gold nanoparticles above the etched grating region to enhance the sensitivity of the reflected spectrum of the FBG. By doing so, we achieve a sensitivity of 1.26 nm/parts per million in determining the trace level of Mn in water. Proper reagents are used to detect manganese in water. Long running multi-physics coupled parallel applications have gained prominence in recent years. The high computational requirements and long durations of simulations of these applications necessitate the use of multiple systems of a Grid for execution. In this paper, we have built an adaptive middleware framework for execution of long running multi-physics coupled applications across multiple batch systems of a Grid. Our framework, apart from coordinating the executions of the component jobs of an application on different batch systems, also automatically resubmits the jobs multiple times to the batch queues to continue and sustain long running executions. As the set of active batch systems available for execution changes, our framework performs migration and rescheduling of components using a robust rescheduling decision algorithm. We have used our framework for improving the application throughput of a foremost long running multi-component application for climate modeling, the Community Climate System Model (CCSM). Our real multi-site experiments with CCSM indicate that Grid executions can lead to improved application throughput for climate models.

One of the significant advancements in Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy (NMR) in combating the problem of spectral complexity for deriving the structure and conformational information is the incorporation of additional dimension and to spread the information content in a two dimensional space. This approach together with the manipulation of the dynamics of nuclear spins permitted the designing of appropriate pulse sequences leading to the evolution of diverse multidimensional NMR experiments. The desired spectral information can now be extracted in a simplified and an orchestrated manner. The indirect detection of multiple quantum (MQ) NMR frequencies is a step in this direction. The MQ technique has been extensively used in the study of molecules aligned in liquid crystalline media to reduce spectral complexity and to determine molecular geometries. Unlike in dipolar coupled systems, the size of the network of scalar coupled spins is not big in isotropic solutions and the MQ 1H detection is not routinely employed, although there are specific examples of spin topology filtering. In this brief review, we discuss our recent studies on the development and application of multiple quantum correlation and resolved techniques for the analyses of proton NMR spectra of scalar coupled spins.

We revisit the process e(+)e(-) -> gamma Z at the ILC with transverse beam polarization in the presence of anomalous CP- violating gamma ZZ coupling lambda(1) and gamma gamma Z coupling lambda(2). We point out that if the final- state spins are resolved, then it becomes possible to fingerprint the anomalous coupling Re lambda(1). 90% confidence level limit on Re lambda(1) achievable at ILC with center- of- mass energy of 500 GeVor 800 GeV with realistic initial beam polarization and integrated luminosity is of the order of few times of 10(-2) when the helicity of Z is used and 10(-3) when the helicity of gamma is used. The resulting corrections at quadratic order to the cross section and its influence on these limits are also evaluated and are shown to be small. The benefits of such polarization programmes at the ILC are compared and contrasted for the process at hand. We also discuss possible methods by which one can isolate events with a definite helicity for one of the final- state particles.

Analytical expressions are found for the wavenumbers in an infinite flexible in vacuo I fluid-filled circular cylindrical shell based on different shell-theories using asymptotic methods. Donnell-Mushtari theory (the simplest shell theory) and four higher order theories, namely Love-Timoshenko, Goldenveizer-Novozhilov, Flugge and Kennard-simplified are considered. Initially, in vacuo and fluid-coupled wavenumber expressions are presented using the Donnell-Mushtari theory. Subsequently, the wavenumbers using the higher order theories are presented as perturbations on the Donnell-Mushtari wavenumbers. Similarly, expressions for the resonance frequencies in a finite shell are also presented, using each shell theory. The basic differences between the theories being what they are, the analytical expressions obtained from the five theories allow one to see how these differences propagate into the asymptotic expansions. Also, they help to quantify the difference between the theories for a wide range of parameter values such as the frequency range, circumferential order, thickness ratio of the shell, etc.

A coupled methodology for simulating the simultaneous growth and motion of equiaxed dendrites in solidifying melts is presented. The model uses the volume-averaging principles and combines the features of the enthalpy method for modeling growth, immersed boundary method for handling the rigid solid-liquid interfaces, and the volume of fluid method for tracking the advection of the dendrite. The algorithm also performs explicit-implicit coupling between the techniques used. A two-dimensional framework with incompressible and Newtonian fluid is considered. Validation with available literature is performed and dendrite growth in the presence of rotational and buoyancy driven flow fields is studied. It is seen that the flow fields significantly alter the position and morphology of the dendrites. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We determine the nature of coupled phonons and magnetic excitations in AlFeO3 using inelastic light scattering from 5 to 315 K covering a spectral range from 100 to 2200 cm(-1) and complementary first-principles density functional theory-based calculations. A strong spin-phonon coupling and magnetic ordering-induced phonon renormalization are evident in (1) anomalous temperature dependence of many modes with frequencies below 850 cm(-1), particularly near the magnetic transition temperature T-c approximate to 250 K, and (2) distinct changes in band positions of high-frequency Raman bands between 1100 and 1800 cm(-1); in particular, a broad mode near 1250 cm(-1) appears only below T-c, attributed to the two-magnon Raman scattering. We also observe weak anomalies in the mode frequencies similar to 100 K due to a magnetically driven ferroelectric phase transition. Understanding of these experimental observations has been possible on the basis of first-principles calculations of the phonons' spectrum and their coupling with spins.

We discuss the possibility of using electroproduction of J/psi as a probe of gluon Sivers function by measuring single spin asymmetry (SSA) in experiments with transversely polarized protons and electron beams. We estimate SSA for JLab, HERMES, COMPASS, and eRHIC energies using the color evaporation model of charmonium production and find asymmetry up to 25% for certain choices of model parameters which have been used earlier for estimating SSA in the SIDIS and Drell-Yan processes.

Two different experimental studies of polymer dynamics based on single-molecule fluorescence imaging have recently found evidence of heterogeneities in the widths of the putative tubes that surround filaments of F-actin during their motion in concentrated solution. In one J. Glaser, D. Chakraborty, K. Kroy, I. Lauter, M. Degawa, N. Kirchesner, B. Hoffmann, R. Merkel, and M. Giesen, Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 037801 (2010)], the observations were explained in terms of the statistics of a worm-like chain confined to a potential determined self-consistently by a binary collision approximation, and in the other B. Wang, J. Guan, S. M. Anthony, S. C. Bae, K. S. Schweizer, and S. Granick, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 118301 (2010)], they were explained in terms of the scaling properties of a random fluid of thin rods. In this paper, we show, using an exact path integral calculation, that the distribution of the length-averaged transverse fluctuations of a harmonically confined weakly bendable rod (one possible realization of a semiflexible chain in a tube), is in good qualitative agreement with the experimental data, although it is qualitatively different in analytic structure from the earlier theoretical predictions. We also show that similar path integral techniques can be used to obtain an exact expression for the time correlation function of fluctuations in the tube cross section. We present a model of identical coupled two-state stochastic units, each of which in isolation is governed by a fixed refractory period. The nonlinear coupling between units directly affects the refractory period, which now depends on the global state of the system and can therefore itself become time dependent. At weak coupling the array settles into a quiescent stationary state. Increasing coupling strength leads to a saddle node bifurcation, beyond which the quiescent state coexists with a stable limit cycle of nonlinear coherent oscillations. We explicitly determine the critical coupling constant for this transition.
