Activated carbon as catalyst support was treated with HCl, HNO3, and HF and the effects of acid treatments on the properties of the activated carbon support were studied by N-2 adsorption, mass titration, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). Ni catalysts supported on untreated and treated activated carbons were prepared, characterized and tested for the reforming reaction of methane with carbon dioxide. It is found that acid treatment significantly changed the surface chemical properties and pore structure of the activated carbon. The surface area and pore volume of the carbon supports are generally enhanced upon acid treatment due to the removal of impurities present in the carbon. The adsorption capacity of Ni2+ on the carbon supports is also increased, and the increase can be closely correlated with the surface acidity. The impregnation of nickel salts decreases the surface area and pore volume of carbon supports both in micropores and mesopores. Acid treatment results in a more homogeneous distribution of the nickel salt in carbon. When the impregnated carbons are heated in inert atmosphere, there exists a redox reaction between nickel oxide and the carbon. Catalytic activity tests for methane reforming with carbon dioxide show that the activity of nickel catalysts based on the acid-treated carbon supports is closely related with the surface characteristics of catalysts. Reaction between formaldehyde and the pendant arm macrocyclic complex (trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine)cobalt(III) [CoL1](3+) yielded the diimine derivative trans-6,13-dimethyl-6.13-bis(methyleneamino)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L-3) as its cobalt(III) complex. Reduction of the imines has been achieved with NaBH4 and the meso and rac cobalt(III) complexes of trans-6,13-dimethyl-6,13-bis(methylamino)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane (L-5) have been prepared. Crystal structures of the macrocyclic complexes [CoL1][ClO4](3), [CoL3][ClO4](3) and meso-[CoL5][ClO4](3).2H(2)O were determined and some unusual structural, spectroscopic and electrochemical variations observed going from the parent hexaamine [CoL1](3+) to [CoL3](3+) (diimine) and ultimately to [CoL5](3+) (bis-N-methylated hexaamine).

Reaction of K-3[Cr(ox)(3)] (ox = oxalate) with nickel(II) and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) in aqueous solution resulted in isolation of the bimetallic assembly [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O. The polymeric complex {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) has been prepared by reaction of nickel(II) perchlorate and tren in aqueous solution. From the same reaction mixture the complex [Ni-2(tren)(2)(aepd)][ClO4](4). 2H(2)O (aepd = N-(2-aminoethyl)pyrrolidine-3,4-diamine), in which a bridging tren ligand contains a carbon-carbon bond between two arms forming a substituted pyrrolidine, has been isolated. The complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The magnetic susceptibility (300-4.2 K) and magnetization data (2, 4 K, H = 0-5 T) for {[Ni-2(tren)(3)][ClO4](4). H2O}(n) (300 K , 4.23 mu(B)) exhibit evidence of weak antiferromagnetic coupling and zero field splitting (2J = -1.8 cm(-1); \ D\ = 2 cm(-1)) at low temperature. For [Ni-3(tren)(4)(H2O)(2)][Cr(ox)(3)](2). 6H(2)O the susceptibility data at 300 K are indicative of uncoupled nickel(II) and chromium(III) sites with zero-field splitting and intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling predicted at low temperature.

The effect of acidic treatments on N2O reduction over Ni catalysts supported on activated carbon was systematically studied. The catalysts were characterized by N-2 adsorption, mass titration, temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), and X-ray photoelectron spectrometry (XPS). It is found that surface chemistry plays an important role in N2O-carbon reaction catalyzed by Ni catalyst. HNO3 treatment produces more active acidic surface groups such as carboxyl and lactone, resulting in a more uniform catalyst dispersion and higher catalytic activity. However, HCl treatment decreases active acidic groups and increases the inactive groups, playing an opposite role in the catalyst dispersion and catalytic activity. A thorough discussion of the mechanism of the N2O catalytic reduction is made based upon results from isothermal reactions, temperature-programmed reactions (TPR) and characterization of catalysts. The potentially sexidentate polyamine macrocycle 15-methyl-1,4,7,10,13-pentaazacyclohexadecan-15-amine (1) was prepared via a copper(II)-templated route from 3,6,9-triazaundecan-1,ll-diamine, formaldehyde and nitroethane which first formed the copper(II) complex of the macrocycle 15-methyl-15-nitro-1,4,7,10,13-pentaazacyclohexadecane (2), reduced subsequently with zinc and aqueous acid to yield 1. The hexaamine 1, with five secondary amine groups in the macrocyclic ring and one pendant primary amine group, forms inert sexidentate octahedral complexes with cobalt(III), chromium(III) and iron(III). An X-ray structure of [Co(1)](ClO4)(3) defines the distorted octahedron of the complex cation and shows it is a symmetrical isomer with all nitrogens bound and the central aza group trans to the pendant primary amine group. The [M(1)](3+) ions are all stable indefinitely in aqueous solution and exhibit spectra consistent with MN6 d(3) (Cr), low-spin d(5) (Fe) and low-spin d(6) (Co) electronic ground states. The pendent-arm macrocyclic hexaamine trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine (L) may coordinate in tetra-, penta- or hexadentate modes, depending on the metal ion and the synthetic procedure. We report here the crystal structures of two pseudo-octahedral cobalt(III) complexes of L, namely sodium trans-cyano(trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine)cobalt(III) triperchlorate, Na[Co(CN)(C13H30N6)](ClO4)(3) or Na{trans-[CoL(CN)]}(ClO4)(3), (I), where L is coordinated as a pentadentate ligand, and trans-dicyano(trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine) cobalt (III) trans-dicyano (trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diaminium)cobalt(III) tetraperchlorate tetrahydrate, [Co(CN)(2)(Cl4H32N6)][Co(CN)(2)(Cl4H30N6)](ClO4)(4)•-4H(2)O or trans-[CoL(CN)(2)]trans-[Co(H2L)(CN)(2)] (ClO4)(4)•-4H(2)O, (II), where the ligand binds in a tetradentate mode, with the remaining coordination sites being filled by C-bound cyano ligands. In (I), the secondary amine Co-N bond lengths lie within the range 1.944 (3)-1.969 (3) &ANGS;, while the trans influence of the cyano ligand lengthens the Co-N bond length of the coordinated primary amine [Co-N = 1.986 (3) &ANGS;]. The Co-CN bond length is 1.899 (3) &ANGS;. The complex cations in (11) are each located on centres of symmetry. The Co-N bond lengths in both cations are somewhat longer than in (I) and span a narrow range [1.972 (3)-1.982 (3) &ANGS;]. The two independent Co-CN bond lengths are similar [1.918 (4) and 1.926 (4) &ANGS;] but significantly longer than in the structure of (1), again a consequence of the trans influence of each cyano ligand.

An experimental white cast iron with the unprecedented fracture tough ness of 40 MPa m(1/2) is currently being studied to determine the mechanisms of toughening. This paper reports the investigation of the role of strain-induced martensitic (SIM) transformation. The dendritic microconstituent in the toughened alloy consists primarily of retained austenite, with precipitated M(7)C(3) carbides and some martensite. Refrigeration experiments and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used to demonstrate, firstly, that this retained austenite has an ''effective'' sub-ambient M(S) temperature and, secondly, that SIM transformation can occur at ambient temperatures. Comparison between room temperature and elevated temperature K-Ic tests showed that the observed SIM produces a transformation toughening response in the alloy, contributing to, but not fully accounting for, its high tough ness. SIM as a mechanism for transformation toughening has not previously been reported for white cast irons. Microhardness traverses on crack paths and X-ray diffraction (XRD) on fracture surfaces confirmed the interpretation of the K-Ic experiments. Further DSC and quantitative XRD showed that, as heat-treatment temperature is varied, there is a correlation between fracture toughness and the volume fraction of unstable retained austenite.

The syntheses and characterisation of the new macrocyclic hexaamine trans-(5(S),7(S),12(R),14(R)-tetramethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine (L-6) and its Co-III complex are reported. The X-ray crystal structural analyses of [CoL6]Cl-2(ClO4) [monoclinic, space group C2/c, a = 16.468(3) Angstrom, b = 9.7156(7) Angstrom, c = 15.070(3) Angstrom, beta = 119.431(8)degrees, Z = 4] and the closely related cis-diamino-substituted macrocyclic complex [CoL2](ClO4)(3) . 2H(2)O (L-2 = cis-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6,13-diamine) [orthorhombic, space group Pna2(1), a = 16.8220(8) Angstrom, b = 10.416(2) Angstrom, c = 14.219(3) Angstrom, Z = 4] reveal significant variations in the observed Co-N bond lengths and coordination geometries, which may be attributed to the trans or cis disposition of the pendent primary amines. The Co-III/II self-exchange electron transfer rate constants for these and other closely related hexaamines have been determined, and variations of some 2 orders of magnitude are found between pairs of trans and cis isomeric Co-III complexes.

Transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the microstructure of an experimental white cast iran, in which a combination of modified alloy composition and unconventional heat treatment has resulted in a fracture toughness of 40 MPa m(-1/2). Microstructural features of the alloy that contribute to the toughness improvement and hence distinguish it from conventional white irons have been investigated. In the as-cast condition the dendrites are fully austenitic and the eutectic consists of M7C3 carbides and martensite. During heat treatment at 1130 degrees C the austenite is partially destabilized by precipitation of chromium-rich M7C3 carbides. This results in a dendritic microconstituent consisting of bulk retained austenite and secondary carbides which are sheathed with martensite. The martensite sheaths, which contain interlath films of retained austenite, are irregular in shape with some laths extending into the bulk retained austenite. Emphasis has been placed on the morphology, distribution, and stability of the retained austenite and its transformation products in the dendrites. The implications of these findings on the transformation toughening mechanism in this alloy are discussed.

An examination has been carried out of the secondary passive film on Type 304 stainless steel in 0.5 M H2SO4. The characterization techniques used were electrochemical (potentiodynamic; potentiostatic, and film reduction experiments) and surface analytical. A bilayer model for the secondary passive film is proposed. It appears that next to the metal, there is a modified passive film which controls the electrochemical response; i.e., governs the current for any applied potential. On top of this modified passive film, the experimental data are consistent with a ''porous'' corrosion-product film which adds to the total film thickness but has little influence on the electrochemical response. The composition of the secondary passive film corresponds most probably to a mixed Fe/Cr oxide/hydroxide enriched in Cr3+, With a composition similar to a primary passive film.

Molybdenum hexacarbonyl reacted with the pendant-arm macrocycles 10-methyl-1,4,8, 12-tetraazacyclopentadecane-10-amine (L-1) and trans-6,13-dimethyl-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane-6, 13-diamine (L-2) in the absence of air to form complexes fac-[MoL1(CO)(3)] and [Mo2L2(CO)(8)] respectively. The mononuclear complex has the macrocycle bound in a tridentate manner, including the pendant primary amine, whereas the dinuclear complex exhibits a bridging bis(didentate) co-ordination mode, again involving the pendant primary amines. Structures have been defined by crystal structure analyses. The preferential binding of the pendant primary amines rather than additional secondary amines parallels similar behaviour observed earlier with some mercury(II) and rhodium(III) complexes, and points to the important general role of this pendant, despite being fused directly to the macrocyclic ring, in metal-ion binding.

Background. Prior to the introduction of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), management of Fabry disease (FD) consisted of symptomatic and palliative measures. ERT has been available for several years using recombinant human agalsidase alfa, an analogue of alpha-galactosidase A (GALA). However, the limitations of ERT in improving kidney function have not been established. This study evaluates the safety and therapeutic effect of agalsidase alfa replacement in terms of kidney function and reduction in 24-hour proteinuria. Methods. During the period between January 1, 2002, and August 1, 2005, nine Fabry patients (7 male, 2 female) were treated according to protocol, receiving 0.2 mg/kg agalsidase alfa IV every two weeks. Kidney function was evaluated by measuring the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) using chromium ethylene diamine tetra-acetate clearance ((51)Cr-EDTA mL/min/1.73 m(2)) at baseline, 12, 24, and 36 months. 24-hour proteinuria was measured at baseline, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24, and 36 months of ERT. Kidney disease was classified according to National Kidney Foundation Disease Outcome Quality Initiative (NKF/DOQI) Advisory Board criteria, which define stage I chronic kidney disease (CKD) as GFR >= 90mL/min/1.73 m(2), stage II as 60-89 mL/min/1.73m(2), stage III as 30-59 mL/min/1.73 m(2), stage IV as 15-29 mL/min/1.73m(2), and stage V as < 15 mL/min/1.73m(2). Results. Six patients completed 36 months of therapy, 2 patients completed 18 months, and 1 patient completed 12 months. Mean patient age at baseline was 34.6 +/- 11.3 years. During the study period, kidney function remained stable in patients with stages I, II, or III CKD. One patient, who entered the study with stage IV CKD, progressed to end-stage chronic kidney disease, beginning hemodialysis after 7 months and receiving a kidney transplant after 12 months of ERT. Proteinuria also remained stable in the group of patients with pathologic proteinuria. The use of agalsidase alfa was well tolerated in 99.5% of the infusions administered. Conclusion. Over the course of 36 months of ERT, there was no change in kidney function and 24-hour proteinuria. This suggests thatagalsidase alfa may slow or halt the progression of kidney disease when used before extensive kidney damage occurs. No significant side effects were observed with ERT during the course of the study.

In recent years, there has been increasing fish consumption in Brazil, largely due to the popularity of Japanese cuisine. No study, however, has previously assessed the presence of inorganic contaminants in species used in the preparation of Japanese food. In this paper, we determined total arsenic, cadmium, chromium, total mercury, and lead contents in 82 fish samples of Tuna (Thunnus thynnus), Porgy (Pagrus pagrus), Snook (Centropomus sp.), and Salmon (Salmo salar) species marketed in Sao Paulo (Brazil). Samples were mineralized in HNO(3)/H(2)O(2) for As, Cd, Cr and Pb, and in HNO(3)/H(2)SO(4)/V(2)O(5) for Hg. Inorganic contaminants were determined after the validation of the methodology using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometry (ICP OES); and for Hg, an ICP-coupled hydride generator was used. Concentration ranges for elements analyzed in mg kg(-1) (wet base) were as follows: Total As (0.11-10.82); Cd (0.005-0.047); Cr (0.008-0.259); Pb (0.026-0.481); and total Hg (0.0077-0.9681). As and Cr levels exceeded the maximum limits allowed by the Brazilian law (1 and 0.1 mg kg(-1)) in 51.2 and 7.3% of the total samples studied, respectively. The most contaminated species were porgy (As = 95% and Cr = 10%) and tuna (As 91% and Cr = 10%). An estimation of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg weekly intake was calculated considering a 60 kg adult person and a 350 g consumption of fish per week, with As and Hg elements presenting the highest contribution on diets reaching 222% of provisional tolerable weekly intake (PTWI) for As in porgy and 41% of PTWI for Hg in tuna. The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of etching time on the tensile bond strength (TBS) of a conventional adhesive bonded to dentin previously irradiated with erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) and erbium, chromium:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er,Cr:YSGG) lasers. Buccal and lingual surfaces of 45 third molars were flattened until the dentin was exposed and randomly assigned to three groups (n = 30) according to the dentin treatment: control (not irradiated), irradiated with Er:YAG (1 W; 250 mJ; 4 Hz; 80.6 J/cm(2)) laser or Er,Cr:YSGG (4 W; 200 mJ; 20 Hz; 71.4 J/cm(2)) laser, and into three subgroups (n = 10) according to acid etching time (15 s, 30 s or 60 s) for each experimental group. After acid etching, the adhesive was applied, followed by the construction of an inverted cone of composite resin. The samples were immersed in distilled water (37A degrees C for 24 h) and subjected to TBS test [50 kilogram-force (kgf), 0.5 mm/min]. Data were analyzed by analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey statistical tests (P a parts per thousand currency signaEuro parts per thousand 0.05). Control group samples presented significant higher TBS values than those of all lased groups. Both irradiated groups exhibited similar TBS values. Samples subjected to the different etching times in each experimental group presented similar TBS. Based on the conditions of this in vitro study we concluded that Er:YAG and Er,Cr:YSGG laser irradiation of the dentin weakens the bond strength of the adhesive. Moreover, increased etching time is not able to modify the bonding strength of the adhesive to irradiated dentin.

Surgeries performed with high-intensity laser devices may be improved with accurate protocols, including the air-water spray regulation. Thus, this study sought to investigate the healing process of wounds made on the dorsum of rat tongues using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser device with different air-water spray regulations. The incisions were made on the dorsum of Wistar rat tongues using an Er,Cr:YSGG laser with three different air-water spray regulations (100/0%, 50/50%, 11/7%). Scalpel incisions functioned as controls. The sacrifices occurred between 0 and 14 days after surgery. Morphological, histological, and immunohistochemical (fibronectin and type III collagen) analysis of the wounds were performed. The air-water spray regulation influenced wound healing and the inflammatory response, especially in the earlier stages. Incisions performed using the 100/0% air/water spray regulation had the worst results, expressing a greater amount of fibronectin and type III collagen. The 50/50% air/water spray regulation brought in a non-clear surgical field and poor laser interaction with the tissue. The 11/7% air/water spray regulation showed the best clinical results and less pronounced histological events. According to the results encountered, the air-water spray should be regulated to improve surgery.
