Abstract The improvement of the heavy vehicle’s aerodynamic behavior on the road has gained a great importance for these last years because of the economic crisis and the consequent increase of the price of the fuels. Due to the fact that a reduction in the aerodynamic resistance of the vehicle involves using a smaller amount of fuel, the objective of this project is to carry out a parametric study about the ensemble tractor-trailer by computational fluid dynamics methods (CFD) in order to obtain the geometry which expense of fuel is the lowest when it’s exposed to frontal wind. The influence of the three parameters, which are the space between cab and trailer, the height of the trailer and the curvature of the frontal cab edges, is analysed in this study which is divided into different parts involving specific programs: choosing the parameters and building the geometries, which is done by using CATIA, the mesh is built by Gambit, and the program equations-solver is FLUENT. Finally a ratio between aerodynamic resistance and a combination of the three parameters will be obtained and it will allow us to choose the best geometry.

After being designed, a product has to be manufactured, which means converting concepts and information into a real, physical object. This requires a big amount of resources and a careful planning. The product manufacturing must be designed too, and that is called Industrialization Design. An accepted methodology for this activity is starting defining simple structures and then progressively increasing the detail degree of the manufacturing solution. The impact of decisions taken at first stages of Industrialization Design is remarkable, and software tools to assist designers are required. In this paper a Knowledge Based Application prototype for the Industrialization Design is presented. The application is implemented within the environment CATIA V5/DELMIA. A case study with a simple Product from aerospace sector illustrates the prototype development.

The operating theatres are the engine of the hospitals; proper management of the operating rooms and its staff represents a great challenge for managers and its results impact directly in the budget of the hospital. This work presents a MILP model for the efficient schedule of multiple surgeries in Operating Rooms (ORs) during a working day. This model considers multiple surgeons and ORs and different types of surgeries. Stochastic strategies are also implemented for taking into account the uncertain in surgery durations (pre-incision, incision, post-incision times). In addition, a heuristic-based methods and a MILP decomposition approach is proposed for solving large-scale ORs scheduling problems in computational efficient way. All these computer-aided strategies has been implemented in AIMMS, as an advanced modeling and optimization software, developing a user friendly solution tool for the operating room management under uncertainty.
