Enhancement of magnetostriction in internally-biased Terfenol-D 2-2 composites

A key issue in the fabrication of Terfenol-D 2-2 composites with internal magnetic field biasing is the selection of appropriate constituent materials to obtain high magnetostriction while keeping optimum magnetomechanical properties. The fabrication process is costly and time consuming and, therefore, numerical methods to predict their properties are useful. In this paper, finite element analysis (FEA) of the magnetostriction of such composites has been carried out using the commercial package ABAQUS. It has been shown that composites fabricated using Nd2Fe14B for the permanent magnetic material layers possess the highest internal fields within the Terfenol-D layers, although the overall strain of these composites is limited to approximately 800 × 10-6 due to the high elastic modulus of Nd2Fe14B. Simulations showed that the strain can be enhanced by choosing a different material with a lower elastic modulus for the permanent magnetic layer even though the internal field is lower. The simulations showed that the strain can increase by 12% if the Nd 2Fe14B layer is substituted by SmCo5; by 23% if it is substituted by Sm2Co17; and by 35% if it is substituted by Alnico. © 2008 IEEE.

Application of gel-casting to the fabrication of 1-3 piezoelectric ceramic-polymer composites for high-frequency ultrasound devices

A modified gel-casting technique was used to fabricate a 1-3 piezoelectric ceramic/polymer composite substrate formed by irregular-shaped pillar arrays of small dimensions and kerfs. This technique involves the polymerization of aqueous piezoelectric (PZT) suspensions with added water-soluble epoxy resin and polyamine-based hardener that lead to high strength, high density and resilient ceramic bodies. Soft micromoulding was used to shape the ceramic segments, and micropillars with lateral features down to 4 m and height-to-width aspect ratios of ∼10 were achieved. The composite exhibited a clear thickness resonance mode at approximately 70 MHz and a k eff ∼ 0.51, demonstrating that the ceramic micropillars possess good electrical properties. Furthermore, gel-casting allows the fabrication of ceramic structures with non-conventional shapes; hence, device design is not limited by the standard fabrication methods. Sensitisation identification of stainless steel to intergranular stress corrosion cracking by atomic force microscopy

A new technique was developed for characterisation of stainless steel to intergramilar stress corrosion cracking by atomic force microscopy. The technique proved to be effective in sensitisation identification of AISI 304 stainless steel and might be promising in sensitisation identification of other stainless steels. Numerical modelling of low temperature laser produced magnesium plasma

The two-dimensional laser-plasma-interaction hydrodynamic code POLLUX has been used to simulate the ablation of a magnesium target by a 30-ns, 248-nm KrF excimer laser at low laser fluences of ≤10 J cm2. This code, originally written for much higher laser intensities, has been recently extended to include a detailed description of the equation of state in order to treat changes of phase within the target material, and also includes a Thomas Fermi description of the electrons. The simulated temporal and spatial evolution of the plasma plume in the early phase of the expansion (≤100 ns) is compared with experimental interferometric measurements of electron density. The expansion dynamics are in good agreement, although the simulated electron number density is about 2.5 times higher than the experimental values.

‘Haan shines with her Neo-Latinist expertise by offering a vivid separate introduction to the Latin poems, which sets up Milton’s poemata specifically within the Neo-Latin contexts of the seventeenth century, thereby dispelling any remaining view of these poems as juvenilia (a view which results from reading the poems chronologically). … The present volume will instantly establish itself as the definitive resource for any reader interested in Milton’s shorter poems, and it is scarcely imaginable that it will ever be eclipsed or be in need of replacing. Report on the Expenditure of the Welland and Burlington Canals, 1830

This copy is signed in the upper left hand corner by Mr. Dickson. Mr. Robert Dickson was one of the directors of the Welland Canal Office. The report covers meetings which were held: January 15-16, and 19 of 1830. The meetings were attended by Messrs. Blacklock, Mackenzie, Woodruff, Longley and Hopkins. Balance sheets are also included within the report. The report of the Welland Canal Company for 1829 is also included within this document, and this is dated December 31, 1829. Names at the end of the 1929 report are members of the Welland Canal Office and they include: John Henry Dunn, president; Henry J. Boulton, vice-president and William Allan, George Keefer, John J. Lefferty and Robert Dickson who were directors The report is dated January 26, 1830, and submitted by Thomas Horner, chairman of the Commons House of Assembly.
