The ATPase activity of RecA is needed to push the DNA strand exchange through heterologous regions.

The role of ATP hydrolysis during the RecA-mediated recombination reaction is addressed in this paper. Recent studies indicated that the RecA-promoted DNA strand exchange between completely homologous double- and single-stranded DNA can be very efficient in the absence of ATP hydrolysis. In this work we demonstrate that the energy derived from the ATP hydrolysis is strictly needed to drive the DNA strand exchange through the regions where the interacting DNA molecules are not in a homologous register. Therefore, in addition to the role of the ATP hydrolysis in promoting the dissociation of RecA from the products of the recombination reaction, as described earlier, ATP hydrolysis also plays a crucial role in the actual process of strand exchange, provided that the lack of homologous register obstructs the process of branch migration.

Las páginas de la prensa dedicaban, sí lo hacían, unas pocas líneas a la operación de mantenimiento de la paz que la UE llevará a cabo en Macedonia a partir de la próxima primavera. La una de la prensa estaba ocupada por el hecho de que los Quince estaban más desunidos que nunca, a causa de la actual crisis internacional. De ahí que en la misma reunión tan sólo hubieran sido capaces de producir una declaración relativa a la situación en Irak de “minimísimo común denominador”, cuyo eje central son dos temas indiscutibles: la obligación de Irak de cooperar con los inspectores y el papel del Consejo de Seguridad como responsable del matenimiento de la paz y de la seguridad...

Detection of possible variant forms of hemoglobin in HbA1c measurements by chromatography liquid ion exchange high resolution (HPLC)

Background: The glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is used to help monitor the degree of a diabetic’s hyperglycemia. Security and accuracy of the methods used in its detection are affected by variants forms of Hb or elevations in levels of Fetal Hb (HbF). These interference are the result of a change in the haemoglobin total net charge of the variant due of a substitution of one amino acid in the remaining amino terminal of the beta chain. International Standardization for HbA1c values (NGSP) not include interference assessment as part of the certification program. Therefore, the effect of each variant or the lifting of the HbF on HbA1c result should be examined in each sample depending on the detected variant and the method used for the detection of the same. The objectives were: to describe the possible variants of Hb and their interference in HbA1c measurement by our method, after the implementation of a computer program for their detection. To identify some variants detected by chromatography liquid ion exchange high resolution (HPLC) with DNA molecular sequencing.
