This report discusses the present status of antifungal therapy and treatment options for candidaemia, considered by experts in the field in Europe. A conference of 26 experts from 13 European countries was held to discuss strategies for the treatment and prevention of invasive candidiasis, with the aim of providing a review on optimal management strategies. Published and unpublished comparative trials on antifungal therapy were analysed and discussed. Commonly asked questions about the management of candidaemia were selected, and possible responses to these questions were discussed. Panellists were then asked to respond to each question by using a touchpad answering system. After the initial conference, the viewpoint document has been reviewed and edited to include new insights and developments since the initial meeting. For many situations, consensus on treatment could not be reached, and the responses indicate that treatment is likely to be modified on a patient-to-patient basis, depending on factors such as degree of illness, prior exposure to azole antifungals, and the presence of potentially antifungal drug-resistant Candida species.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar coeficientes de similaridade para serem aplicados a conjuntos de genótipos de algodoeiro com baixa diversidade genética. Analisou-se um conjunto de 65 linhagens e 4 cultivares de algodão, com marcadores de RAPD e SSR, e estimou-se a similaridade genética de acordo com sete coeficientes de similaridade: Coincidência Simples, Rogers & Tanimoto, Ochiai, Hamman, Jaccard, Dice e Russel & Rao. A adequação dos coeficientes ao conjunto de genótipos foi verificada por correlação entre as matrizes de distância, índice de consenso entre os dendrogramas e otimização de Tocher. As análises mostraram que o coeficiente de Russel e Rao foi divergente em relação aos demais e seu uso não é recomendável. Entre os parâmetros usados para avaliar a qualidade de informação de cada coeficiente, apenas o índice de consenso estabeleceu diferenças e os classificou em dois grupos: aquele em que a ausência simultânea é considerada e aquele em que ela é desconsiderada. Considerando-se a presença de apenas dois alelos microssatélites por loco e os maiores índices de consenso, os coeficientes de Coincidência Simples, Hamman e Rogers & Tanimoto devem ser preferidos, quando em conjuntos de genótipos de algodoeiro melhorados e com baixa diversidade.

Deletions on the short arm of chromosome 4 cause Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome (WHS) and Pitt-Rogers-Danks syndrome (PRDS). WHS is associated with severe growth and mental retardation, microcephaly, a characteristic facies and congenital malformations. The PRDS phenotype is similar to WHS but generally less severe. Seizures occur in the majority of WHS and PRDS patients. Sgrò et al. [17] described a stereotypic electroclinical pattern in four unrelated WHS patients, consisting of intermittent bursts of 2-3 Hz high voltage slow waves with spike wave activity in the parietal areas during drowsiness and sleep associated with myoclonic jerks. We report a patient with PRDS and the typical EEG pattern and review 14 WHS patients with similar EEG findings reported in the literature. CONCLUSION: Awareness and recognition of the characteristic electroclinical findings in Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome and Pitt-Rogers-Danks syndrome might help in the early diagnosis of such patients.

The gold mineralization of the Hutti Mine is hosted by nine parallel, N - S trending, steeply dipping, 2 - 10 m wide shear zones, that transect Archaean amphibolites. The shear zones were formed after peak metamorphism during retrograde ductile D, shearing in the lower amphibolite facies. They were reactivated in the lower to mid greenschist facies by brittle-ductile D-3 shearing and intense quartz veining. The development of a S-2-S-3 crenulation cleavage facilitates the discrimination between the two deformation events and contemporaneous alteration and gold mineralization. Ductile D, shearing is associated with a pervasively developed distal chlorite - sed cite alteration assemblage in the outer parts of the shear zones and the proximal biotite-plagioclase alteration in the center of the shear zones. D3 is characterized by development of the inner chlorite-K-feldspar alteration, which forms a centimeter-scale alteration halo surrounding the laminated quartz veins and replaces earlier biotite along S-3. The average size of the laminated vein systems is 30-50 m along strike as well as down-dip and 2-6 m in width. Mass balance calculations suggest strong metasomatic changes for the proximal biotite-plagioclase alteration yielding mass and volume increase of ca. 16% and 12%, respectively. The calculated mass and volume changes of the distal chlorite-sericite alteration (ca. 11%, ca. 8%) are lower. The decrease in 6180 values of the whole rock from around 7.5 parts per thousand for the host rocks to 6-7 parts per thousand for the distal chlorite-sericite and the proximal biotite-plagioclase alteration and around 5 parts per thousand for the inner chlorite-K-feldspar alteration suggests hydrothermal alteration during two-stage deformation and fluid flow. The ductile D-2 deformation in the lower amphibolite facies has provided grain scale porosities by microfracturing. The pervasive, steady-state fluid flow resulted in a disseminated style of gold-sulfide mineralization and a penetrative alteration of the host rocks. Alternating ductile and brittle D3 deformation during lower to mid greenschist facies conditions followed the fault-valve process. Ductile creep in the shear zones resulted in a low permeability environment leading to fluid pressure build-up. Strongly episodic fluid advection and mass transfer was controlled by repeated seismic fracturing during the formation of laminated quartz(-gold) veins. The limitation of quartz veins to the extent of earlier shear zones indicate the importance of preexisting anisotropies for fault-valve action and economic gold mineralization. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. Una eficaz acción educativa obliga necesariamente a plantearse en profundidad la autoevaluación como modelo de cambio y la participación de todos los estamentos de la comunidad educativa. Un mayor o menor grado de participación viene a ser un indicador que nos permite valorar cualquier propuesta de «calidad», «reforma» o «innovación». El modelo B.A.D.I. yen especial su instrumento modular, responde a las exigencias particulares de reflexión, análisis y toma de decisiones que se realiza en cada centro para responder adecuadamente a cualquier planteamiento innovador. Los principios fundamentales de este modelo se resumen en: A. Es un modelo de concepción organicista, estamental, con definición ideológica. B. Responde a un enfoque fundamentalmente rogeriano. C. Participa de los enfoques social, abierto, dinámico, cultural y positivo. Comparte la teoría moderna de la organización y sus indicadores se agrupan en cuatro fases: Criterial, presupuestaria, metodológica e informativa. D. Se identifica con los modelos centrados en la evaluación de cambio, de forma especial con la autoevaluación. La flexibilidad que caracteriza al modelo viene dado por el instrumento modular de área o de criterio, como resultado de la participación y el consenso de todos los estamentos de la institución educativa.

Antifungal therapy is a central component of patient management for acute and chronic mycoses. Yet, treatment choices are restricted because of the sparse number of antifungal drug classes. Clinical management of fungal diseases is further compromised by the emergence of antifungal drug resistance, which eliminates available drug classes as treatment options. Once considered a rare occurrence, antifungal drug resistance is on the rise in many high-risk medical centers. Most concerning is the evolution of multidrug- resistant organisms refractory to several different classes of antifungal agents, especially among common Candida species. The mechanisms responsible are mostly shared by both resistant strains displaying inherently reduced susceptibility and those acquiring resistance during therapy. The molecular mechanisms include altered drug affinity and target abundance, reduced intracellular drug levels caused by efflux pumps, and formation of biofilms. New insights into genetic factors regulating these mechanisms, as well as cellular factors important for stress adaptation, provide a foundation to better understand the emergence of antifungal drug resistance.

Desde la paideia griega, el proceso educativo nos encamina hacia el ejercicio de la virtud (areté). La humanitas ciceroniana, e incluso el humanismo renacentista, todas las visiones humanistas coinciden en valorar de manera especial al ser humano. Las teorías de Rogers, Maslow o Frankl no tienen nada que ver con aquel humanismo clásico elitista que se centraba en el desarrollo de las capacidades intelectuales, olvidando los demás aspectos de la personalidad social, moral, emocional, física e incluso estética. Aquel humanismo se basaba solamente en la transmisión de conocimientos de una generación a otra. En el humanismo que proponemos, se trata de ayudar al educando a convertirse en persona a través de descubrir el sentido de su vida.

By DSC data, the kinetical parameters Ea , n and A were calculated for the thermal decomposition of the adducts CdCl2.2dmf, CdCl2.dmf and CdBr2.dmf (dmf= dimethylformamide) by using Rogers and Smith method. The found values were : Ea = 85, 176 and 101 kJ mol-1 , n= 0.23, 0.25, and 0.17, A= 2.40x10(9), 1.89x10(19) and 1.07x10(9) respectively. By TGA data, the kinetical patameters for the thermal decomposition of the adduct CdCl2.1,5 dmeu (dmeu=dimethylethyleneurea) were calculated by using five different methods.

To create a more inclusive school, an increase in multidisciplinary cooperation is needed. One possible form of collaboration could encompass the special education teacher taking on the role of a consultant for other teachers in need of support in working with heterogeneous groups of pupils. Previous research shows that special education teachers see the role as consultant as diffuse and complex. The overarching aim of the present study involves deepening the knowledge on how consultation in a special educational context can be understood and developed based on teachers’ descriptions on this particular form of activity interpreted against various perspectives on consultation. The study is qualitative in nature and rests on a hermeneutic interpretive research tradition in combination with an abductive approach. The theoretical framework consists of two different approaches to consultation: the directive and the non-directive approach. The approaches differ regarding particular emphasis on advice and reflection during the consultation and with respect to who or what should be the focus of the consultation. The two approaches are here studied through various theories such as social learning theory, Bruner's theory of scaffolding, Roger’s humanist psychology, and constructivism. Semi-structured interviews were held with eighteen special education teachers (n=9) and class teachers (n=9) working in the compulsory school. The overall interpretation of the results shows that special education consultation can be understood as three different types of consultation. Consultation as counseling which harmonizes with the directive perspective on consultation is the most prominent type. In the consultation as counseling conversation, the special educational knowledge transfer is central and the focus is placed on the pupil. Although special education knowledge transfer emerges as a unique aspect of special education consultation, there are several inherent challenges in this type of consultation that can be addressed in that teachers also describe two other types of consultation. In the reflective consultation, there is a move away from the pupil focus and toward a focus on the class teacher and the use of reflection. The reflective consultation harmonizes with the non-directive approach to consultation. This type of consultation does not as of yet have a prominent place in the Finland-Swedish school context and at this stage it is not seen as a legitimate type of consultation according to the teachers’ descriptions. Despite this, certain aspects of the reflective conversation could be given more space in the development of consultation within special educational contexts. The co-operative consultation is characterized by the teachers acting as teammates and using professional exchange as a strategy for consultation. Both teachers' knowledge is seen as central, and rather than the special education teacher acting as the expert and moderator, the teachers control the consultation together and jointly move the work along. The co-operative consultation enables the focus to move from the pupil toward the context, which can lead to the development of inclusive practices. The results indicate that this type of consultation holds potential in the development of special educational consultation that takes place between equal colleagues. The co-operative consultation opens up for a third collaborative approach to consultation, where aspects of the directive and non-directive perspective can merge and develop. The thesis concludes with the proposal that special pedagogical consultation can be understood from an integrated perspective. The characteristics of the consultation can vary depending on the type of problem or situation, while co-operative consultation can be seen as the ideal as equal colleagues meet in consultation conversations. In order to develop the co-operative consultation, both teachers are required to have knowledge of consultation as a practice, to be part of a collaborative school climate, and that teachers are provided with enough time to take part in consultations.

Tässä kvalitatiivisessa pro gradu -työssä tutkittiin brändin vaikutusta innovaation adoptoinnissa. Innovaationa käytettiin älypuhelinta. Päätutkimusongelmana oli selvittää kuinka brändi vaikuttaa älupuhelimen omaksuntaan. Brändin vaikutusta tutkittiin Rogersin Diffusion of Innovation -teoriasta adoptioprosessin sekä innovaation määritteiden avulla. Sosiaalisten suhteiden vaikutusta brändin valintaan sekä innovaation adoptointiin taas tutkittiin Technology Acceptance Modelin avulla. Empiirinen osio koottiin teemahaastattelun tulosten avulla. Tulosten saamiseksi tutkimuksessa haastateltiin kymmentä yliopisto-opiskelijaa. Vastaukset osoittivat brändin merkittävää vaikutusta älypuhelimen adoptoinnissa.

The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of family support on diabetes education behavioural outcomes, specifically in relation to diet, exercise, and blood glucose monitoring in adult individuals with Type 2 diabetes. Fifty-three individuals attending diabetes education for the first time were followed approximately 1 month. The findings for the influence of family support were mixed. Family attending diabetes class with participants had a positive influence with respect to diet. This is consistent with Carl Rogers (1969) who espouses setting a positive climate for learning and that learning new attitudes or information comes when external barriers are at a minimum. However family attending class with participants had no influence with respect to exercise or blood glucose monitoring. The family support action of encouraging with respect to diet overall did not influence healthy eating behaviours except for decreased skipped meals and scheduled snacks. In fact, in the areas of family willing to make healthy choices along with participant, the less the family was involved in encouraging, the better the participant did. Exercise on the other hand was influenced positively by family encouragement. This is consistent with Bandura's theory that enhancement of self-confidence and self-efficacy can lead to desired behaviour changes. Family encouragement however did not appear to influence blood glucose monitoring behaviours. This study has implications for practice in that diabetes education programs can encourage family to attend classes or get involved in encouraging the person with diabetes, so that it may help to increase healthy eating behaviours and exercise. As time is necessary to implement changes in behaviour, future research can look at the influence of family support over a 6-month, I-year, or greater period.
