During earthquakes, hydrodynamic pressures are generated by the impounded reservoir on the dam face. The magnitude and distribution of the hydrodynamic pressures vary with factors such as frequency and intensity of earthquake-induced ground motion, depth of impounded reservoir, stiffness of dam and geological conditions. It is difficult to obtain experimental data on hydrodynamic pressures from the field owing to uncertainties associated with earthquake loading. This paper aims at using dynamic centrifuge modelling to measure hydrodynamic pressures behind both relatively stiff and flexible model dams. Comparisons of the experimental data with theoretical hydrodynamic pressures show that Westergaard's equation gives a conservative estimation of hydrodynamic pressures. Comparison with Chopra's method revealed that it underpredicts hydrodynamic pressures for low reservoir depths but gives reasonably good predictions for higher depths of reservoir. It is concluded that dynamic centrifuge modelling may be an effective experimental method to estimate the hydrodynamic pressures acting on a dam. © 2010 Thomas Telford Ltd.

This paper demonstrates a catalyst-free synthesis of ZnO nanostructures using platinum microheaters under ambient environmental conditions. Different morphologies of ZnO nanostructures are synthesized from the oxidization of Zn thin film by local heating. The synthesized ZnO structures are characterized by the SEM, EDX and Raman spectra. The characterization of two shapes of Pt microheaters is investigated and the relationship between the applied heating power and ZnO nanostructures synthesis is investigated under ambient conditions. We observe that the density and morphology of ZnO nanostructures can be controlled through applied heating voltages. Furthermore, a connected composite structural (Zn-ZnO-Zn) layer is synthesized using combinative microheaters. © 2011 IEEE.

An investigation was carried out on the quality changes of Catla (Catla calla) stored immediately (0 h) in ice, after 6 hours in ice and at ambient temperature. The samples were examined for organoleptic and microbiological parameters in summer. Organoleptically, the acceptability of fish varied between 16-20 days in both the iced storage conditions and 12-13.5 hours at ambient temperature (28°C). When fish were organoleptically just acceptable on the 16th day of storage, bacterial load were 6.23 and 6.17 log10 cfu/g, respectively for 0 hour and after 6 hours iced fish. But on the 20th day of storage, when fish were just unacceptable SPC were 6.51 and 6.62 log10 cfu/g. In case of ambient temperature storage condition standard plate count was 8.36 log10 cfu/g on 13.5 hours, when fish were organoleptically just unacceptable. At the time of rejection for fish stored in ice (0 hour and after 6 hours) on 20th day, gram negative and gram positive values were 55.45%, 44.55% and 44.52%, 55.48% respectively. While fish were rejected after 13.5 hours at ambient temperature gram negative and gram positive bacteria were found as 43.02% and 56.98%. The differences in SPC, gram positive and gram negative bacteria between the storage times were statistically significant (p<0.05).

Air stable complementary polymer inverters were demonstrated by inkjet printing of both top-gate electrodes and the semiconductors in ambient conditions. The p-type and n-type polymer semiconductors were also thermally annealed in ambient conditions after printing. The good performance of circuits in ambient condition shows that the transistors are not only air-stable in term of ambient humidity and oxygen, but also inert to ion migration through dielectrics from the printed gate. The result obtained here has further confirmed the feasibility of fabrication of low-cost polymer complementary circuits in a practical environment. © 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Failure of retaining walls is observed after many recent seismic events. Design of these walls are based on the pseudo-static force designs based on the Mononobe-Okabe earth pressure coefficient equations. However, it is clear that there are limitations attached with this approach. This paper investigates the seismic behaviour of sheet pile retaining walls using dynamic centrifuge testing facilities. In addition to using bending moment strain gauges on the wall, new generation earth pressure cells have also been used to investigate the generation of active and passive earth pressures. The results indicate that Mononobe-Okabe equations give relatively good estimates of active earth pressures but may be over-predicting passive earth pressures at certain peak ground acceleration levels. Based on this series of centrifuge tests it is concluded that earth pressure cells are successful in providing good qualitative data, but need to be supplemented by good calibration methods. © 2010 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

A catalyst-free synthesis of ZnO nanostructures using platinum microheaters under ambient environmental conditions has been developed. Different types of ZnO nanostructures are synthesized from the oxidization of Zn thin film by local heating. The characterization of two shapes of Pt microheaters is investigated and the relationship between the applied power for heat generation and ZnO nanostructure synthesis is investigated by local heating experiments under ambient conditions. Based on the developed heating approach, synthesis area, location, and morphologies of ZnO nanostructures can be controlled through the deposited thickness of Zn layer and applied heating voltages. Furthermore, a connected multiple-structure (Zn-ZnO-Zn) layer is synthesized using combinative multimicroheaters. © 2002-2012 IEEE.

Underground structures located in liquefiable soil deposits are susceptible to floatation following an earthquake event due to their lower unit weight relative to the surrounding saturated soil. This inherent buoyancy may cause lightweight structures to float when the soil liquefies. Centrifuge tests have been carried out to study the excess pore pressure generation and dissipation in liquefiable soils. In these tests, near full liquefaction conditions were attained within a few cycles of the earthquake loading. In the case of high hydraulic conductivity sands, significant dissipation could take place even during the earthquake loading which inhibits full liquefaction from occurring. In the case of excess pore pressure generation and dissipation around a floating structure, the cyclic response of the structure may lead to the reduction in excess pore pressure near the face of the structure as compared to the far field. This reduction in excess pore pressure is due to shear-induced dilation and suction pressures arising from extensile stresses at the soil-structure interface. Given the lower excess pore pressure around the structure; the soil around the structure retains a portion of this shear strength which in turn can discourage significant uplift of the underground structure. ZnxSnyOz thin films (<100nm thickness), deposited by remote sputtering from a metal target using a confined argon plasma and oxygen gas jet near the sample, were investigated for their material properties. No visible deformation or curl was observed when deposited on plastic. Materials were confirmed to be amorphous and range between 5 and 10 at.% Sn concentration by x-ray diffraction, x-ray photoemission spectroscopy and energydispersive x-ray spectroscopy. Factors affecting the material composition over time are discussed. Depletion of the Sn as the target ages is suspected. © The Electrochemical Society.

Ba1.6Ca2.3Y1.1Fe5O13 is an Fe3+ oxide adopting a complex perovskite superstructure, which is an ordered intergrowth between the Ca2Fe2O5 and YBa2Fe3O8 structures featuring octahedral, square pyramidal, and tetrahedral B sites and three distinct A site environments. The distribution of A site cations was evaluated by combined neutron and X-ray powder diffraction. Consistent with the Fe3+ charge state, the material is an antiferromagnetic insulator with a Néel temperature of 480-485 °C and has a relatively low d.c. conductivity of 2.06 S cm-1 at 700 °C. The observed area specific resistance in symmetrical cell cathodes with the samarium-doped ceria electrolyte is 0.87 Ω cm2 at 700 °C, consistent with the square pyramidal Fe3+ layer favoring oxide ion formation and mobility in the oxygen reduction reaction. Density functional theory calculations reveal factors favoring the observed cation ordering and its influence on the electronic structure, in particular the frontier occupied and unoccupied electronic states. © 2010 American Chemical Society.
