The South Carolina District was founded in the 1930s for “the promotion of social welfare through the performance of civil and beneficial service of the character generally accomplished by civic organizations, rendering aid and assistance to local Pilot Clubs and implementing at the district level the programs and policies of Pilot Club International.” The Pilot Club International South Carolina District Records consist of a certificate of incorporation, minutes, annual reports, correspondence, resolutions and lists of standing rules.

Analysis of carvedilol enantiomers in human plasma using chiral stationary phase column and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry

Carvedilol is an antihypertensive drug available as a racemic mixture. (-)-(S)-carvedilol is responsible for the nonselective beta-blocker activity but both enantiomers present similar activity on a1-adrenergic receptor. To our knowledge, this is the first study of carvedilol enantiomers in human plasma using a chiral stationary phase column and liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry. The method involves plasma extraction with diisopropyl ether using metoprolol as internal standard and direct separation of the carvedilol enantiomers on a Chirobiotic T (R) (Teicoplanin) column. Protonated ions [M + H]+ and their respective ion products were monitored at transitions of 407 > 100 for the carvedilol enantiomers and 268 > 116 for the internal standard. The quantification limit was 0.2 ng ml-1 for both enantiomers in plasma. The method was applied to study enantioselectivity in the pharmacokinetics of carvedilol administered as a single dose of 25 mg to a hypertensive patient. Fracture susceptibility of endodontically treated teeth

Aim: To assess the influence of cervical preparation on fracture susceptibility of roots. Material and methods: During root canal instrumentation, the cervical portions were prepared with different taper instruments: I: no cervical preparation; II: #30/.08; III: #30/.10; IV: #70/.12. The specimens were sealed with the following filling materials (n = 8), A: unfilled; B: Endofill/gutta-percha; C: AH Plus/gutta-percha; D: Epiphany SE/Resilon. For the fracture resistance test, a universal testing machine was used at 1 mm per minute. Results: anova demonstrated difference (P < 0.05) between taper instruments with a higher value for group I (205.3 +/- 77.5 N) followed by II (185.2 +/- 70.8 N), III (164.8 +/- 48.9 N), and IV (156.7 +/- 41.4 N). There was no difference (P > 0.05) between filling materials A (189.1 +/- 66.3 N), B (186.3 +/- 61.0 N), C (159.7 +/- 69.9 N), and D (176.9 +/- 55.2 N). Conclusions: Greater cervical wear using a #70/.12 file increased the root fracture susceptibility, and the tested filling materials were not able to restore resistance.

Titanium dioxide induced inflammation in the small intestine

AIM: To investigate the effects of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPTiO2) and microparticles (MPTiO2) on the inflammatory response in the small intestine of mice. METHODS: BI 57/6 male mice received distilled water suspensions containing TiO2 (100 mg/kg body weight) as NPTiO2 (66 nm), or MPTiO2 (260 nm) by gavage for 10 d, once a day; the control group received only distilled water. At the end of the treatment the duodenum, jejunum and ileum were extracted for assessment of cytokines, inflammatory cells and titanium content. The cytokines interleukin (IL)-1b, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12, IL-13, IL-17, IL-23, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), intracellular interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay in segments of jejunum and ileum (mucosa and underlying muscular tissue). CD4(+) and CD8(+) T cells, natural killer cells, and dendritic cells were evaluated in duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples fixed in 10% formalin by immunohistochemistry. The titanium content was determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. RESULTS: We found increased levels of T CD4(+) cells (cells/mm(2)) in duodenum: NP 1240 +/- 139.4, MP 1070 +/- 154.7 vs 458 +/- 50.39 (P < 0.01); jejunum: NP 908.4 +/- 130.3, MP 813.8 +/- 103.8 vs 526.6 +/- 61.43 (P < 0.05); and ileum: NP 818.60 +/- 123.0, MP 640.1 +/- 32.75 vs 466.9 +/- 22.4 (P < 0.05). In comparison to the control group, the groups receiving TiO2 showed a statistically significant increase in the levels of the inflammatory cytokines IL-12, IL-4, IL-23, TNF-alpha, IFN-gamma and TGF-beta. The cytokine production was more pronounced in the ileum (mean SE): IL-12: NP 33.98 +/- 11.76, MP 74.11 +/- 25.65 vs 19.06 +/- 3.92 (P < 0.05); IL-4: NP 17.36 +/- 9.96, MP 22.94 +/- 7.47 vs 2.19 +/- 0.65 (P < 0.05); IL-23: NP 157.20 +/- 75.80, MP 134.50 +/- 38.31 vs 22.34 +/- 5.81 (P < 0.05); TNF alpha: NP 3.71 +/- 1.33, MP 5.44 +/- 1.67 vs 0.99 +/- 019 (P < 0.05); IFN gamma: NP 15.85 +/- 9.99, MP 34.08 +/- 11.44 vs 2.81 +/- 0.69 (P < 0.05); and TGF-alpha: NP 780.70 +/- 318.50, MP 1409.00 +/- 502.20 vs 205.50 +/- 63.93 (P < 0.05). Detection of gait perturbations based on proprioceptive information. Application to Limit Cycle Walkers

Walking on irregular surfaces and in the presence of unexpected events is a challenging problem for bipedal machines. Up to date, their ability to cope with gait disturbances is far less successful than humans': Neither trajectory controlled robots, nor dynamic walking machines (Limit CycleWalkers) are able to handle them satisfactorily. On the contrary, humans reject gait perturbations naturally and efficiently relying on their sensory organs that, if needed, elicit a recovery action. A similar approach may be envisioned for bipedal robots and exoskeletons: An algorithm continuously observes the state of the walker and, if an unexpected event happens, triggers an adequate reaction. This paper presents a monitoring algorithm that provides immediate detection of any type of perturbation based solely on a phase representation of the normal walking of the robot. The proposed method was evaluated in a Limit Cycle Walker prototype that suffered push and trip perturbations at different moments of the gait cycle, providing 100% successful detections for the current experimental apparatus and adequately tuned parameters, with no false positives when the robot is walking unperturbed.

Die Haftung des vorläufigen Insolvenzverwalters bei der Begründung von Masseverbindlichkeiten (§§ 21, 61 InsO)

Die Arbeit befasst sich mit der Haftungsproblematik des vorläufigen Insolvenzverwalters, dem das Insolvenzgericht bereits im Eröffnungsverfahren die Verwaltungs- und Verfügungsbefugnis über das schuldnerische Vermögen übertragen hat. Nach § 55 Abs. 2 InsO haben Verbindlichkeiten, die der vorläufige Insolvenzverwalter begründet hat, im eröffneten Verfahren den Rang von Masseverbindlichkeiten. Gleiches gilt im Fall der Inanspruchnahme von Gegenleistungen aus bereits bestehenden Dauerschuldverhältnissen. Für die von ihm dergestalt begründeten Masseverbindlichkeiten haftet der vorläufige Insolvenzverwalter im Fall eines späteren Forderungsausfalls gegenüber den Gläubigern persönlich, sofern er nicht den Entlastungsbeweis führen kann, dass bei Eingehung der Verbindlichkeit der spätere Ausfall nicht absehbar war (§§ 21, 61 InsO). Schwerpunkt der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die Herausarbeitung der Haftungsvoraussetzungen des § 61 InsO, der an ein pflichtwidriges Verhalten des (vorläufigen) Insolvenzverwalters anknüpft. Der vorläufige Verwalter hat, um einer Haftung nach §§ 21, 61 InsO zu entgehen, vor Eingehung neuer Masseverbindlichkeiten die zukünftige Massedeckung zu prüfen. Hierbei müssen die zukünftigen Einnahmen und Ausgaben im Wege einer Finanzplanung erfasst und bewertet werden. Die Herausarbeitung dieser in Literatur und Praxis bislang stiefmütterlich behandelten Problematik ist Kernthema der Dissertation.

Le Coliti Microscopiche nei soggetti con diarrea non ematica: uno studio prospettico

Introduzione: le Coliti Microscopiche, altrimenti note come Colite Collagena e Colite Linfocitica, sono disordini infiammatori cronici del colon che causano diarrea e colpiscono più frequentemente donne in età avanzata e soggetti in terapia farmacologica. Negli ultimi anni la loro incidenza sembra aumentata in diversi paesi occidentali ma la prevalenza in Italia è ancora incerta. Scopo: il presente studio prospettico e multicentrico è stato disegnato per valutare la prevalenza delle CM in pazienti sottoposti a colonscopia per diarrea cronica non ematica. Pazienti e metodi: dal Maggio 2010 al Settembre 2010 sono stati arruolati consecutivamente tutti i soggetti adulti afferenti in due strutture dell’area metropolitana milanese per eseguire una pancolonscopia. Nei soggetti con diarrea cronica non ematica sono state eseguite biopsie multiple nel colon ascendente, sigma e retto nonché in presenza di lesioni macroscopiche. Risultati: delle 8008 colonscopie esaminate 265 sono state eseguite per diarrea cronica; tra queste, 8 presentavano informazioni incomplete, 52 riscontri endoscopici consistenti con altri disordini intestinali (i.e. IBD, tumori, diverticoliti). 205 colonscopie sono risultate sostanzialmente negative, 175 dotate di adeguato campionamento microscopico (M:F=70:105; età mediana 61 anni). L’analisi istologica ha permesso di documentare 38 nuovi casi di CM (M:F=14:24; età mediana 67.5 anni): 27 CC (M:F=10:17; età mediana 69 anni) e 11 CL (M:F=4:7; età mediana 66 anni). In altri 25 casi sono state osservate alterazioni microscopiche prive dei sufficienti requisiti per la diagnosi di CM. Conclusioni: nel presente studio l’analisi microscopica del colon ha identificato la presenza di CM nel 21,7% dei soggetti con diarrea cronica non ematica ed indagine pancolonscopica negativa. Lo studio microscopico del colon è pertanto un passo diagnostico fondamentale per il corretto inquadramento diagnostico delle diarree croniche, specialmente dopo i 60 anni di età. Ampi studi prospettici e multicentrici dovranno chiarire ruolo e peso dei fattori di rischio associati a questi disordini.

Efficacy and safety of ovarian stimulation before chemotherapy in 205 cases

Ovarian stimulation and cryopreservation of fertilized oocytes before cancer therapy is the best established and efficient fertility preservation technique and should still be considered before chemotherapy. Within a short time frame of 2 weeks, between 8.6 (18-25 y) and 5.1 (36-40 y) fertilized oocytes can be cryopreserved.
