At first glance you think that this is Christ crucified. At a second glance, you recognize a woman hanging on a cross. This is not an invention of the 20th century but reaches back to history where we we can find women cross-dressed or even bearded as men. St Wilgefortis or St Uncumber was a bearded and crucified woman who was venerated widely in northern Europe during the fifteeneth and sixteenth centuries. Wilgefortis is a corruption of the term „virgo fortis“ („strong virgin“). She and other female saints were considered as „imitations of Christ“. The paper deals with the reasons why this saint became so popular and how even today ideas about such strong virgins which mirror androgynous symbolism live on in popular culture.

Television viewing is a sedentary behavior that is modifiable. Reducing media-related behaviors via parent-focused interventions may hold promise for decreasing childhood obesity. This feasibility study examines a novel parent-centered brief telephone-delivered Motivational Enhancement Interview (MEI) to encourage parents of 2nd and 4th graders to set a rules limiting TV time or remove the TV from the child's bedroom. This quasi-experimental sub-study was part of the larger CATCH: En Vivo pilot study conducted in a Hispanic population in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. Parents in the MEI condition were contacted via telephone and encouraged to meet the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommended 2 hours per day or less of TV. Unconditional logistic regression was used to analyze the data. At post-test, 85% of parents of 4th graders in the MEI group (compared to 71% at pre-test) reported having a rule limiting TV time. The adjusted odds ratio for the MEI group compared to the control group was 3.88, 95% CI (0.72-20.99). At pre-test, 63.16% of 2nd graders had a television in their bedrooms. The 2nd grade MEI intervention reduced that number to 41.03% (OR=0.25, 95%CI (0.08-0.82)). This first look at using MEI to target parents of children to modify TV behavior presents evidence on a promising strategy for modifying children's home media environment and warrants further investigation. ^

The geological map shows the border area between the polyphase (late Mesoproterozoic and Cambrian) deformed Sivorg Terrane and the Kottas Terrane where a pervasive Cambrian tectonometamorphic overprints is lacking. Geological revision mapping was carried out during the Antarctic Expedition 2000/01 of the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research. Topographic data were obtained through stereoscopic aerial photo interpretation. The photogrammetric photo flights were undertaken in 1986 by the Institut für Angewandte Geodäsie, Frankfurt. Horizontal ground control points required for aerial photo interpretation were determined by means of Doppler satellite observation during the 2nd German Neuschwabenland Expedition 1985/86. Vertical ground control points were taken from unpublished map drafts at 1:100 000 scale by Norsk Polarinstitutt, Oslo. The elevation above mean sea level was transferred to Heimefrontfjella barometrically. For this reason assertions concerning the absolute elevation (referred to sea level) are uncertain. Contours and spot heights presented on the map were obtained from the photogrammetric evaluation of the photography taken in 1986; relative elevation data (height differences) are accurate to approximately ±10 m. ABSTRACT The subject of this Thesis “Fragment and Abstraction, is a purpose of analysis about the dialogue between fragment as object trouvé and abstraction, as a way to do by the author in the architectural project. At first, we suppose historically that artistic creation is born as a way to understand the complexity of the world where the human beings lives. They tried to stablish a dialogue with the fragment, looking for its meaning, sometimes as the part of an unknown story, sometimes as part of their own history, but sometimes as reference of mythic times, becoming a symbol of a lost paradise. In arts, fragment is at beginning of many dialogues between craft and the author, as we know in music, literature or painting. This thesis try to analyze this dialogue in architecture. This investigation began asking for the meaning of fragment as something what was broken out from something we do not know, and abstraction as an immaterial way of thinking which let us connecting the most far ideas. Therefore, five architectural model were proposed, in order to explain that relationship. The chosen buildings were: 1- Villa Adriana 2- Charles V Imperator’s Palace at la Alhambra 3- Sir John Soane House -Museum 4- Rodríguez –Acostas’s Carmen 5- Castelvecchio by Carlo Scarpa There are: Two Imperial palaces (the 1st and 2nd), Two fortresses (the 2nd and 5th) Two House-Artist Studio (the 3rd and 4th) Five types of relationship with gardens. The authors, from them, we do not know some of them Three of the architects used to teach architecture All of them went to Rome Now the five buildings have become museum institution.During the investigation, in order to explain the relationship between them, I introduced Giambattista Piranesi as an important nexus to understand the transition from the antiquity to the modernity.

ABSTRACT The search of new forms of modernity became the main theme of the works developed by Leslie Martin, Colin St. John Wilson and James Stirling between 1955 and 1970. Belonging to the sensitivity emerged in postwar Britain, their deep critical sense encourages a renewed interpretation of some principles of Modern Movement and a reflection about the modification or the use of forms that are rooted in cultural tradition. This research is divided into four themes widely discussed and which has articulated part of modern review along the second half of the twentieth century: » Abstraction and realism » Review of Functionalism » The reconsideration of the formal archetypes » The relationship between form and urban context are shown as critical base for the selected works. The trend toward realism arose in response to the will of universality (and objectivity) that represented the abstract language, just as the review of Functionalism aimed to overcome the consideration of architecture's work as rational product of its function and technology. The reconsideration of traditional archetypes, in turn, shows a concern for the meaning of the cultural forms, a matter equally decisive in the renewed attention to the structure of the historical city. These themes evidence an interest to extend modern architecture, without thereby the recognition of the past forms imply a distancing regarding the future. The idea of review also becomes strategy in finding new answers. If some principles of the Modern Movement arose in reaction to Beaux-Arts classicism which preceded it, the analyzed proposals show the operational validity of this approach to create works of a strong modernity. Their interest, therefore, lies not only in its consideration as study cases that broaden our knowledge of a certain period, but as a recent tradition which serves as a critic basis for the current practice.

How do urban growth and an ageing population affect or inform planning at the national and regional level in the European Union? At a time when economic stagnation, environmental concerns and demographic changes are affecting social and political discourses, they are also influencing urban form and development. Furthermore, as people are living longer, they still have much to contribute in their later years to their communities and to the economy. As a result, the policy and urban design paradigm is shifting as the relative importance of older people grows. By looking at the connections between ageing, design and the environment, and the role of policy and planning strategies, this brief seeks to understand how the EU plans for an ageing population and attempts to reshape communities in an increasingly challenging socioeconomic context. This brief looks at some of the regional initiatives and guidelines and highlights the role the EU is playing in influencing some of the development trends, particularly those in urban centres.
