Decomposition temperatures of Cu2Ln2O5 (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds

The equilibrium decomposition temperatures of Cu2Ln2O5 (Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu) compounds have been measured using a combined DTA-TGA apparatus under a flowing Ar + O2 gas mixture, in which the partial pressure of oxygen was controlled at 5.0 × 103 Pa. The Cu2Ln2O5 compounds yield Ln2O3 and Cu2O on decomposition. The decomposition temperature increases monotonically with the atomic number of the lanthanide element. This suggests that the stability of the Cu2Ln2O5 compounds with respect to the component binary oxides increases with decreasing radius of the Ln3+ ion.

Synthesis, structural characterization and ferroelectric properties of Pb(0.76)Ca(0.24)TiO(3) nanotubes

A capillary-enforced template-based method has been applied to fabricate Pb(0.76)Ca(0.24)TiO(3) (PCT24) nanotubes via filling PCT24 precursor solution, prepared by modified sol-gel method, into nanochannels of anodic aluminum oxide templates. The morphology and structure of as-prepared PCT24 were examined by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction techniques. The obtained PCT24 nanotubes with diameter of similar to 200 nm and wall thickness of similar to 20 nm exhibited a tetragonal perovskite structure. High resolution TEM (HRTEM) analysis confirmed that as-obtained PCT24 nanotubes made up of nanoparticles (5-8 nm) which were randomly aligned in the nanotubes. Formation of some solid crystalline PCT24 nanorods, Y-junctions and multi-branches were observed. Interconnections in the pores of template are responsible for the growth of Y-junctions and multi-branches. The possible formation mechanism of PCT24 nanotubes/nanorods was discussed. Ferroelectric hysteresis loops of PCT24 nanotube arrays were measured, showing a room temperature ferroelectric characteristic of as-prepared PCT24 nanotubes. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Thermodynamics of TmRhO3, Phase Equilibria, and Chemical Potentials in the System Tm-Rh-O

Phase equilibria in the system Tm-Rh-O at 1200 K is established by isothermal equilibration of selected compositions and phase identification after quenching to room temperature. Six intermetallic phases (Tm3Rh, Tm7Rh3, Tm5Rh3, Tm3Rh2, TmRh, TmRh2 +/-delta) and a ternary oxide TmRhO3 are identified. Based on experimentally determined phase relations, a solid-state electrochemical cell is devised to measure the standard free energy of formation of orthorhombic perovskite TmRhO3 from cubic Tm2O3 and beta-Rh2O3 in the temperature range from (900 to 1300) K. The results can be summarized as: Delta G(f,ox)(o) +/- 104/J.mol(-1) = -46474 + 3.925(T/K). Invoking the Neumann-Kopp rule, the standard enthalpy of formation of TmRhO3 from its constituent elements at 298.15 K is estimated as -1193.89 (+/- 2.86) kJ.mol(-1). The standard entropy of TmRhO3 at 298.15 K is evaluated as 103.8 (+/- 1.6) J.mol(-1).K-1. The oxygen potential-composition diagram and three-dimensional chemical potential diagram at 1200 K and temperature-composition diagrams at constant partial pressures of oxygen are computed from thermodynamic data. The compound TmRhO3 decomposes at 1688 (+/- 2) K in pure oxygen and at 1583 (+/- 2) K in air at standard pressure.

Synthesis, microstructure and thermal expansion studies on Ca0 center dot 5+x/2Sr0 center dot 5+x/2Zr4P6-2x Si-2x O-24 system prepared by co-precipitation method

We report on the synthesis, microstructure and thermal expansion studies on Ca0 center dot 5 + x/2Sr0 center dot 5 + x/2Zr4P6 -aEuro parts per thousand 2x Si-2x O-24 (x = 0 center dot 00 to 1 center dot 00) system which belongs to NZP family of low thermal expansion ceramics. The ceramics synthesized by co-precipitation method at lower calcination and the sintering temperatures were in pure NZP phase up to x = 0 center dot 37. For x a parts per thousand yen 0 center dot 5, in addition to NZP phase, ZrSiO4 and Ca2P2O7 form as secondary phases after sintering. The bulk thermal expansion behaviour of the members of this system was studied from 30 to 850 A degrees C. The thermal expansion coefficient increases from a negative value to a positive value with the silicon substitution in place of phosphorous and a near zero thermal expansion was observed at x = 0 center dot 75. The amount of hysteresis between heating and cooling curves increases progressively from x = 0 center dot 00 to 0 center dot 37 and then decreases for x > 0 center dot 37. The results were analysed on the basis of formation of the silicon based glassy phase and increase in thermal expansion anisotropy with silicon substitution.

The influence of debris cover and glacial lakes on the recession of glaciers in Sikkim Himalaya, India

We investigated area changes in glaciers covering an area of similar to 200 km(2) in the Tista basin, Sikkim, Eastern Indian Himalaya, between similar to 1990 and 2010 using Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) and Indian Remote-sensing Satellite (IRS) images and related the changes to debris cover, supraglacial lakes and moraine-dam lakes. The glaciers lost an area of 3.3 +/- 0.8% between 1989/90 and 2010. More detailed analysis revealed an area loss of 2.00 +/- 0.82, 2.56 +/- 0.61 and 2.28 +/- 2.01 km(2) for the periods 1989-97, 1997-2004/05 and 2004-2009/10, respectively. This indicates an accelerated retreat of glaciers after 1997. On further analysis, we observed (1) the formation and expansion of supraglacial lakes on many debris-covered glaciers and (2) the merging of these lakes over time, leading to the development of large moraine-dam lakes. We also observed that debris-covered glaciers with lakes lose a greater area than debris-covered glaciers without lakes and debris-free glaciers. The climatic data for 24 years (1987-2011), measured at the Gangtok meteorological station (1812 m a.s.l.), showed that the region experienced a 1.0 degrees C rise in the summer minimum temperature and a 2.0 degrees C rise in the winter minimum temperature, indicating hotter summers and warmer winters. There was no significant trend in the total annual precipitation. We find that glacier retreat is caused mainly by a temperature increase and that debris-covered glaciers can retreat at a faster rate than debris-free glaciers, if associated with lakes.

A Pd-24 Pregnant Molecular Nanoball: Self-Templated Stellation by Precise Mapping of Coordination Sites

We found that Pd(II) ion (M) and the smallest 120 bidentate donor pyrimidine (L-a) self-assemble into a mononuclear M(L-a)(4) complex (1a) instead of the expected smallest M-12(L-a)(24) molecular ball (1), presumably due to the weak coordination nature of the pyrimidine. To construct such a pyrimidine bridged nanoball, we employed a new donor tris(4-(pyrimidin-5-yl)phenyl)amine (L); which upon selective complexation with Pd(II) ions resulted in the formation of a pregnant M24L24 molecular nanoball (2) consisting of a pyrimidine-bridged Pd-12 baby-ball supported by a Pd-12 larger mother-ball. The formation of the baby-ball was not successful without the support of the mother-ball. Thus, we created an example of a self-assembly where the inner baby-ball resembling to the predicted M-12(L-a)(24) ball (1) was incarcerated by the giant outer mother-ball by means of geometrical constraints. Facile conversion of the pregnant ball 2 to a smaller M-12(L-b)(24) ball 3 with dipyridyl donor was achieved in a single step.

Evolution of high-pressure mafic granulites and pelitic gneisses from NE Madagascar: Tectonic implications

The occurrence of high-pressure mafic-ultramafic bodies within major shear zones is one of the indicators of paleo-subduction. In mafic granulites of the Andriamena complex (north-eastern Madagascar) we document unusual textures including garnet-clinopyroxene-quartz coronas that formed after the breakdown of orthopyroxene-plagioclase-ilmenite. Textural evidence and isochemical phase diagram calculations in the Na2O-CaO-K2O-FeO-MgO-Al2O3-SiO2-H2O-TiO2 system indicate a pressure-temperature (P-T) evolution from an isothermal (780 degrees C) pressure up to c. 24 kbar to decompression and cooling. Such a P-T trajectory is typically attained in a subduction zone setting where a gabbroic/ultramafic complex is subducted and later exhumed to the present crustal level during oceanic closure and final continental collision. The present results suggest that the presence of such deeply subducted rocks of the Andriamena complex is related to formation of the Betsimisaraka suture. LA-ICPMS U-Pb zircon dating of pelitic gneisses from the Betsimisaraka suture yields low Th/U ratios and protolith ages ranging from 2535 to 2625 Ma. A granitic gneiss from the Alaotra complex yields a zircon crystallization age of ca. 818 Ma and Th/U ratios vary from 1.08 to 2.09. K-Ar dating of muscovite and biotite from biotite-kyanite-sillimanite gneiss and garnet-biotite gneiss yields age of 486 +/- 9 Ma and 459 +/- 9 Ma respectively. We have estimated regional crustal thicknesses in NE Madagascar using a flexural inversion technique, which indicates the presence of an anomalously thick crust (c. 43 km) beneath the Antananarivo block. This result is consistent with the present concept that subduction beneath the Antananarivo block resulted in a more competent and thicker crust. The textural data, thermodynamic model, and geophysical evidence together provide a new insight to the subduction history, crustal thickening and evolution of the high-pressure Andriamena complex and its link to the terminal formation of the Betsimisaraka suture in north-eastern Madagascar. Prevalencia de leptospirosis canina en la ciudad de Catacamas Olancho utilizando la tecnica de micro-aglutinacion 11 de marzo al 24 de julio

Con el objetivo de Contribuir a la mejora de la salud pública en la ciudad de Catacamas, Olancho, Honduras, mediante el diagnóstico de la prevalencia de Leptospirosis canina. Utilizando la técnica de Micro-aglutinación (MAT), para el registro y control de casos En el periodo del 11 de marzo al 24 de agosto del 2009. Para conocer la población canina con posibilidades de infestación con Leptospirosis según, sexo, edad, factores de riesgo. Y determinar el grado de infestación y una estrategia técnica y económica para el control y seguimiento contra la Leptospirosis. Se realizo un muestreo de 380 canes, correspondiente al 10% de la población canina en dicha ciudad. Extrayéndose 3 ml de sangre de la vena radial y safena externa, luego de procesarla para separar el suero mediante precipitación, fueron trasladados al laboratorio del INSTITUTO HONDUREÑO DE INVESTIGACIONES MEDICO VETERINARIO. Para su análisis mediante la técnica MAT. Luego se tomo una segunda muestra de orina a los animales reactivos, para realizar un cultivo haciendo uso de un medio de cultivo con antibiótico flurouracilo (5-fu) De acuerdo con los resultados obtenidos, de 380 canes, 5.1% son positivos y 94.9 % negativos a Leptospirosis encontrándose los siguientes serovares: canicola, icterohemorragica, hardjo, grippotyphosa.

Evaluación agronómica de nueve híbridos de cebolla (Allium cepa (L.) Cif) en el valle de Sébaco, Matagalpa

Un estudio de nueve híbridos comerciales de cebolla ( Allium cepa L.), y un testigo comercial, se realizó en el Centro Experimental del Valle de Sébaco del INTA, en San Isidro con el objetivo de evaluar el comportamiento agronómico , rendimiento de bulbo, así como por categoría de los mismos. El diseño experimental fue un BCA con cuatro repeticiones. Los datos obtenidos se analizaron con ANDEVA y prueba de rangos múltiples de Tuckey (p =0.05). Número de h ojas en 9 híbridos fueron significativos: Arad, Neptune, Martin, Noam. Amazone y Appolo = 6 Hojas respectivamente, y Russel, Equanex y Galil con = 5 hojas respectivamente . Altura de plantas en híbridos fueron significativos: Noam, Equane x, Martin y Arad = 60 cm respectivamente ; Neptune, Amazon, Appolo y Russel entre 55 cm - 60 cm , y Galil = 55 cm respectivamente . Mancha Púrpura: no hubo diferencias significativa s . Mayores rendimientos híbridos bulbos amarillo Amazon y Ap polo, con promedi os > 60 y 38 Tm ha - 1 de bulbos comerciales respectivamente. Mayor adaptación: Amazon (60.8 Tm ha - 1 ). Equanex, Appolo y Martin tuvieron rendimientos supe riores a las 39.5, 38.4, 36.6 Tm ha - 1 respectivamente . Arad, Galil, y Russel tuvieron rendimiento menores a los 29.0, 24.9, y 22.5 T m ha - 1 respectivamente . Noam y Neptune fueron los híbridos que no se adaptaron a las condiciones del CEVAS – INTA. Categorías de bulbo: Pre - pack fue superior co n 58.6 Tm ha - 1 a Large medium 26.1 Tm ha - 1 .
