The retention of the desired combination of mechanical/tribological properties in ultrafine grained materials presents important challenges in the field of bulk metallic composites. In order to address this aspect, the present work demonstrates how one can achieve a good combination of hardness and wear resistance in Cu-Pb-TiB2 composites, consolidated by spark plasma sintering at low temperatures ( < 500 degrees C). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies reveal ultrafine grains of Cu (100-400 nm) with coarser TiB2 particles (1-2 mu m) along with fine scale Pb dispersoid at triple junctions or at the grain boundaries of Cu. Importantly, a high hardness of around 2.2 GPa and relative density of close to 90% relative density (rho(theo)) have been achieved for Cu-15 wt% TiB2-10 wt% Pb composite. Such property theo, combination has never been reported for any Cu-based nanocomposite, by conventional processing route. In reference to the tribological performance, fretting wear tests were conducted on the sintered nanocomposites and a good combination of steady state COF (0.6-0.7) and wear rate (10-4 mm(3)/N m) were measured. An inverse relationship between wear rate and hardness was recorded and this commensurates well with Archard's relationship of abrasive wear. The formation of a wear-resistant delaminated tribolayer consisting of TiB2 particles and ultrafine oxide debris, (Cu, Fe, Ti)(x)O-y as confirmed from subsurface imaging using focused ion beam microscopy has been identified as the key factors for the low wear rate of these composites. A combination of measurements using photoelectron spectroscopy and calculations using density functional theory (DFT) was applied to compare the detailed electronic structure of the organolead halide perovskites CH3NH3PbI3 and CH3NH3PbBr3. These perovskite materials are used to absorb light in mesoscopic and planar heterojunction solar cells. The Pb 4f core level is investigated to get insight into the chemistry of the two materials. Valence level measurments are also included showing a shift of the valence band edges where there is a higher binding energy of the edge for the CH3NH3PbBr3 perovskite. These changes are supported by the theoretical calculations which indicate that the differences in electronic structure are mainly caused by the nature of the halide ion rather than structural differences. The combination of photoelectron spectroscopy measurements and electronic structure calculations is essential to disentangle how the valence band edge in organolead halide perovskites is governed by the intrinsic difference in energy levels of the halide ions from the influence of chemical bonding.

In this work, porous membranes were designed by selectively etching the PEO phase, by water, from a melt-mixed PE/PEO blend. The pure water flux and the resistance across the membrane were systematically evaluated by employing an indigenously developed cross flow membrane setup. Both the phase morphology and the cross sectional morphology of the membranes was assessed by scanning electron microscopy and an attempt was made to correlate the observed morphology with the membrane performance. In order to design antibacterial membranes for water purification, partially reduced graphene oxide (rGO), silver nanoparticles (Ag) and silver nanoparticles decorated with rGO (rGO-Ag) were synthesized and incorporated directly into the blends during melt mixing. The loss of viability of bacterial cells was determined by the colony counting method using E. coli as a model bacterium. SEM images display that the direct contact with the rGO-Ag nanoparticles disrupts the cell membrane. In addition, the rGO-Ag nanoparticles exhibited a synergistic effect with respect to bacterial cell viability in comparison to both rGO and Ag nanoparticles. The possible mechanism associated with the antibacterial activity in the membranes was discussed. This study opens new avenues in designing antibacterial membranes for water purification.

We report the origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Nb1/2)O-3 (PFN) ceramic sample prepared by modified solid-state reaction synthesis by a single-step method, based on X-ray diffraction (XRD), neutron diffraction (ND), Mossbauer spectroscopy and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy results. Formation of single-phase monoclinic PFN ceramic with Cm space group was confirmed by XRD and ND at RT. The morphology studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed uniform microstructure of the sample with average grain size of similar to 2 mu m. The ND, Mossbauer spectroscopy, M-H loop and EPR studies were carried out to confirm the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. A clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop is evidenced as the existence of weak ferromagnetism at RT. EPR spectrum clearly shows the ferromagnetism through a good resonance signal. The symmetric EPR line shape with g = 1.9895 observed in PFN sample was identified to be due to Fe3+ ions. Mossbauer spectroscopy at RT shows superparamagnetic behaviour with presence of Fe in 3+ valence state. Ferroelectric P-E loops on PFN at RT confirm the existing ferroelectric ordering. Our observation is in agreement with literature, and it supports that the origin of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity is isolated, i.e. from different regions in the sample. Our results do not support the multiferroic nature of PFN at RT.

We report the origin of room temperature weak ferromagnetic behavior of polycrystalline Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 (PFW) powder. The structure and magnetic properties of the ceramic powder prepared by a Columbite method were characterized by X-ray and neutron diffraction, Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetization measurements. Rietveld analysis of diffraction data confirm the formation of single phase PFW, without traces of any parasitic pyrochlore phase. PFW was found to crystallize in the cubic structure at room temperature. The Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data measured at room temperature confirmed the G-type antiferromagnetic structure of PFW in our sample. However, along with the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of the Fe spins, we have observed the existence of weak ferromagnetism at room temperature through: (i) a clear opening of hysteresis (M-H) loop, (ii) bifurcation of the field cooled and zero-field cooled susceptibility; supported by Mossbauer spectroscopy results. The P-E loop measurements showed a non-linear slim hysteresis loop at room temperature due to the electronic conduction through the local inhomogeneities in the PFW crystallites and the inter-particle regions. By corroborating all the magnetic measurements, especially the spin glass nature of the sample, with the conduction behavior of the sample, we report here that the observed ferromagnetism originates at these local inhomogeneous regions in the sample, where the Fe-spins are not perfectly aligned antiferromagnetically due to the compositional disordering. Wrist pulse signals contain important information about the health of a person and hence diagnosis based on pulse signals has assumed great importance. In this paper we demonstrate the efficacy of a two term Gaussian model to extract information from pulse signals. Results have been obtained by conducting experiments on several subjects to record wrist pulse signals for the cases of before exercise and after exercise. Parameters have been extracted from the recorded signals using the model and a paired t-test is performed, which shows that the parameters are significantly different between the two groups. Further, a recursive cluster elimination based support vector machine is used to perform classification between the groups. An average classification accuracy of 99.46% is obtained, along with top classifiers. It is thus shown that the parameters of the Gaussian model show changes across groups and hence the model is effective in distinguishing the changes taking place due to the two different recording conditions. The study has potential applications in healthcare.

During service and/or storage, Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) solder alloys are subjected to temperatures ranging from 0.4 to 0.8 Tm (where Tm is the melting temperature of SAC alloys), making them highly prone to significant microstructural coarsening. The microstructures of these low melting point alloys continuously evolve during service. This results in evolution of creep properties of the joint over time, thereby influencing the long-term reliability of microelectronic packages. Here, we study microstructure evolution and creep behavior of two Sn-Ag-Cu (SAC) alloys, namely Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu and Sn-1.0Cu-0.5Cu, isothermally aged at 150 degrees C for various lengths of time. Creep behavior of the two SAC solders after different aging durations was systematically studied using impression creep technique. The key microstructural features that evolve during aging are Ag3Sn particle size and inter-particle spacing. Creep results indicate that the creep rate increases considerably with increasing inter-particle spacing although the creep stress exponent and creep activation energy are independent of the aging history.

In this paper, we present Bi-Modal Cache - a flexible stacked DRAM cache organization which simultaneously achieves several objectives: (i) improved cache hit ratio, (ii) moving the tag storage overhead to DRAM, (iii) lower cache hit latency than tags-in-SRAM, and (iv) reduction in off-chip bandwidth wastage. The Bi-Modal Cache addresses the miss rate versus off-chip bandwidth dilemma by organizing the data in a bi-modal fashion - blocks with high spatial locality are organized as large blocks and those with little spatial locality as small blocks. By adaptively selecting the right granularity of storage for individual blocks at run-time, the proposed DRAM cache organization is able to make judicious use of the available DRAM cache capacity as well as reduce the off-chip memory bandwidth consumption. The Bi-Modal Cache improves cache hit latency despite moving the metadata to DRAM by means of a small SRAM based Way Locator. Further by leveraging the tremendous internal bandwidth and capacity that stacked DRAM organizations provide, the Bi-Modal Cache enables efficient concurrent accesses to tags and data to reduce hit time. Through detailed simulations, we demonstrate that the Bi-Modal Cache achieves overall performance improvement (in terms of Average Normalized Turnaround Time (ANTT)) of 10.8%, 13.8% and 14.0% in 4-core, 8-core and 16-core workloads respectively.

Multiferroic Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 ceramics were synthesized via a modified two-stage Columbite method. Single phase formation was confirmed from the analysis of x-ray and neutron diffraction patterns recorded at room temperature. Structural analysis of the diffraction data reveals cubic phase (space group Pm-3m) for the title compound. Magnetic structure of the title compound at room temperature exhibits G-type antiferromagnetic structure. The Mossbauer spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) studies were carried out at 300 K. The isomer shift and quadrupole splitting of the Mossbauer spectra confirms the trivalent state of iron (Fe3+). The Mossbauer spectra also suggest that the iron and tungsten are randomly distributed at the octahedral, B site. EPR spectra show a single broad line associated with Fe3+ ions. Both spectra clearly exhibit weak ferromagnetic behaviour of Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 ceramic at 300 K. Considering neutron diffraction, Mossbauer and EPR results together, it may be stated here that Pb(Fe2/3W1/3)O-3 exhibits antiferromagnetic behavior along with weak ferromagnetism at room temperature.

The influence of substitution of Bi atom instead of S atoms on the structural and optical properties of thin films of As40S60 are reported. The density is found to be increased with the addition Bi heavy metal into As2S3. The amorphous to polycrystalline structure of the bulk sample is observed for Bi more than 7%. The glass transition temperature is found to be decreased with addition of Bi. The absorption edge shifts to shorter wavelength, thereby decreasing optical band gap of BixAs(40)S(60-x) (x= 0,2 and 4% here) film. The optical parameter change is discussed from the stand point of chemical bonds formed in the films and related to the defect states produced due to incorporation of Bi atoms in place of chalcogenide S atoms.

We report the remarkable phase separation behavior in La0.67Sr0.33MnO3 doped with Bi3+ ion at La site. The temperature dependent resistivity and magnetization of La0.67-xBixSr0.33MnO3 (x>0) show the presence of phase separation of ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered antiferromagnetic insulating phases. Markedly, the field dependant magnetization studies of La0.67-xBixSr0.33MnO3 (x=0.3) show the metamagnetic nature of ferromagnetic metallic state implying the competition of coexisting ferromagnetic metallic and charge ordered antiferromagnetic phases. The electron spin resonance and exchange bias studies of La0.67-xBixSr0.33MnO3 (x=0.4 and 0.5) substantiate the coexistence of ferromagnetic clusters in antiferromagnetic matrix. We report a unique, single source precursor Prussian blue (iron(III) ferrocyanide (Fe-4(III)Fe-II(CN)(6)](3))) for the synthesis of Fe/Fe3C nanoparticle encapsulated N-doped graphitic layers and bamboo-like graphitic nanotubes. Hollow N-doped graphite (N-HG) nanostructures are obtained when the encapsulated nanostructures are treated with an acid. Both the encapsulated nanostructures and N-HG are shown to be applicable as bi-functional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reactions (OER). The ORR activity is shown to be improved for N-HG and is comparable to commercial Pt/C. On the other hand, encapsulated nanostructures exhibit OER activity with long-term stability comparable to commercial RuO2.

Lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate (PMN-PT) is an intriguing candidate for applications in many electronic devices such as multi-layer capacitors, electro-mechanical transducers etc. because of its high dielectric constant, low dielectric loss and high strain near the Curie temperature. As an extension of our previous work on Ta-doped PMNT-PT aimed at optimizing the performance and reducing the cost, this paper focuses on the effect of Pb volatilization on the dielectric properties of 0.77Pb(Mg1/3(Nb0.9Ta0.1)2/3)O3-0.23PbTiO3. The dielectric constant and loss of the samples are measured at different frequencies and different temperatures. The phase purity of this compound is determined by X-ray diffraction pattern. It is found that the volatilization during sintering does influence the phase formation and dielectric properties. The best condition is sintering with 0.5 g extra PbO around a 4 g PMNT-PT sample.
