Global air surface temperatures and precipitation have increased over the last several decades resulting in a trend of greening across the Circumpolar Arctic. The spatial variability of warming and the inherent effects on plant communities has not proven to be uniform or homogeneous on global or local scales. We can apply remote sensing vegetation indices such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) to map and monitor vegetation change (e.g., phenology, greening, percent cover, and biomass) over time. It is important to document how Arctic vegetation is changing, as it will have large implications related to global carbon and surface energy budgets. The research reported here examined vegetation greening across different spatial and temporal scales at two disparate Arctic sites: Apex River Watershed (ARW), Baffin Island, and Cape Bounty Arctic Watershed Observatory (CBAWO), Melville Island, NU. To characterize the vegetation in the ARW, high spatial resolution WorldView-2 data were processed to create a supervised land-cover classification and model percent vegetation cover (PVC) (a similar process had been completed in a previous study for the CBAWO). Meanwhile, NDVI data spanning the past 30 years were derived from intermediate resolution Landsat data at the two Arctic sites. The land-cover classifications at both sites were used to examine the Landsat NDVI time series by vegetation class. Climate variables (i.e., temperature, precipitation and growing season length (GSL) were examined to explore the potential relationships of NDVI to climate warming. PVC was successfully modeled using high resolution data in the ARW. PVC and plant communities appear to reside along a moisture and altitudinal gradient. The NDVI time series demonstrated an overall significant increase in greening at the CBAWO (High Arctic site), specifically in the dry and mesic vegetation type. However, similar overall greening was not observed for the ARW (Low Arctic site). The overall increase in NDVI at the CBAWO was attributed to a significant increase in July temperatures, precipitation and GSL.

Cigar Lake is a high-grade uranium deposit, located in northern Saskatchewan, Canada. In order to extract the uranium ore remotely, thus ensuring minimal radiation dose to workers and also to access the ore from stable ground, the Jet Boring System (JBS) was developed by Cameco Corporation. This system uses a high-powered water jet to remotely excavate cavities. Survey data is required to determine the final shape, volume, and location of the cavity for mine planning purposes and construction. This paper provides an overview of the challenges involved in remotely surveying a JBS-mined cavity and studies the potential use of a time-of-flight (ToF) camera for remote cavity surveying. It reports on data collected and analyzed from inside an experimental environment as well as on real data acquired on site from the Cigar Lake and Rabbit Lake mines.

Sharp edges were first used for field ionisation mass spectrometry by Beckey. Although Cross and Robertson found that etched metal foils were more effective than razor blades for field ionisation, blades are very convenient for determination of field ionisation mass spectra, as reported by Robertson and Viney. The electric field at the vertex of a sharp edge can be calculated by the method of the conformal transformation. Here we give some equations for the field deduced with the assumption that the edge surface can be approximated by a hyperbola. We also compare two hyperbolae with radii of curvature at the vertex of 500 Angstrom and 1000 Angstrom with the profile of a commercial carbon-steel razor blade.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a human pathobiont that colonizes the nasopharynx. S. pneumoniae is responsible for causing non-invasive and invasive disease such as otitis, pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis, being a leading cause of infectious diseases worldwide. Due to similarities with closely related species sharing the same niche, it may be a challenge to correctly distinguish S. pneumoniae from its relatives when using only non-culture based methods such as real time PCR (qPCR). In 2007, a molecular method targeting the major autolysin (lytA) of S. pneumoniae by a qPCR assay was proposed by Carvalho and collaborators to identify pneumococcus. Since then, this method has been widely used worldwide. In 2013, the gene encoding for the ABC iron transporter lipoprotein PiaA, was proposed by Trzcinzki and collaborators to be used in parallel with the lytA qPCR assay. However, the presence of lytA gene homologues has been described in closely related species such as S. pseudopneumoniae and S. mitis and the presence of piaA gene is not ubiquitous between S. pneumoniae. The hyaluronate lyase gene (hylA) has been described to be ubiquitous in S. pneumoniae. This gene has not been used so far as a target for the identification of S. pneumoniae. The aims of our study were to evaluate the specificity, sensitivity, positive predicted value (PPV) and negative predicted value (NPV) of the lytA and piaA qPCR methods; design and implement a new assay targeting the hylA gene and evaluate the same parameters above described; analyze the assays independently and the possible combinations to access what is the best approach using qPCR to identify S. pneumoniae. A total of 278 previously characterized strains were tested: 61 S. pseudopneumoniae, 37 Viridans group strains, 30 type strains from other streptococcal species and 150 S. pneumoniae strains. The collection included both carriage and disease isolates. By Mulilocus Sequence Analysis (MLSA) we confirmed that strains of S. pseudopneumoniae could be misidentified as S. pneumoniae when lytA qPCR assay is used. The results showed that as a single target, lytA had the best combination of specificity, sensitivity, PPV and NPV being, 98.5%, 100.0%, 98.7% and 100.0% respectively. The combination of targets with the best values of specificity, sensibility, PPV and NPV were lytA and piaA, with 100.0%, 93.3%, 97.9% and 92.6%, respectively. Nonetheless by MLSA we confirmed that strains of S. pseudopneumoniae could be misidentified as S. pneumoniae and some capsulated (23F, 6B and 11A) and non-capsulated S. pneumoniae were not Identified using this assay. The hylA gene as a single target had the lowest PPV. Nonetheless it was capable to correctly identify all S. pneumoniae.

Interactions between surface waves and sea ice are thought to be an important, but poorly understood, physical process in the atmosphere-ice-ocean system. In this work, airborne scanning lidar was used to observe ocean waves propagating into the marginal ice zone (MIZ). These represent the first direct spatial measurements of the surface wave field in the polar MIZ. Data were compared against two attenuation models, one based on viscous dissipation and one based on scattering. Both models were capable of reproducing the measured wave energy. The observed wavenumber dependence of attenuation was found to be consistent with viscous processes, while the spectral spreading of higher wavenumbers suggested a scattering mechanism. Both models reproduced a change in peak direction due to preferential directional filtering. Floe sizes were recorded using co-located visible imagery, and their distribution was found to be consistent with ice breakup by the wave field.

Two trends are emerging from modern electric power systems: the growth of renewable (e.g., solar and wind) generation, and the integration of information technologies and advanced power electronics. The former introduces large, rapid, and random fluctuations in power supply, demand, frequency, and voltage, which become a major challenge for real-time operation of power systems. The latter creates a tremendous number of controllable intelligent endpoints such as smart buildings and appliances, electric vehicles, energy storage devices, and power electronic devices that can sense, compute, communicate, and actuate. Most of these endpoints are distributed on the load side of power systems, in contrast to traditional control resources such as centralized bulk generators. This thesis focuses on controlling power systems in real time, using these load side resources. Specifically, it studies two problems.

(1) Distributed load-side frequency control: We establish a mathematical framework to design distributed frequency control algorithms for flexible electric loads. In this framework, we formulate a category of optimization problems, called optimal load control (OLC), to incorporate the goals of frequency control, such as balancing power supply and demand, restoring frequency to its nominal value, restoring inter-area power flows, etc., in a way that minimizes total disutility for the loads to participate in frequency control by deviating from their nominal power usage. By exploiting distributed algorithms to solve OLC and analyzing convergence of these algorithms, we design distributed load-side controllers and prove stability of closed-loop power systems governed by these controllers. This general framework is adapted and applied to different types of power systems described by different models, or to achieve different levels of control goals under different operation scenarios. We first consider a dynamically coherent power system which can be equivalently modeled with a single synchronous machine. We then extend our framework to a multi-machine power network, where we consider primary and secondary frequency controls, linear and nonlinear power flow models, and the interactions between generator dynamics and load control.

(2) Two-timescale voltage control: The voltage of a power distribution system must be maintained closely around its nominal value in real time, even in the presence of highly volatile power supply or demand. For this purpose, we jointly control two types of reactive power sources: a capacitor operating at a slow timescale, and a power electronic device, such as a smart inverter or a D-STATCOM, operating at a fast timescale. Their control actions are solved from optimal power flow problems at two timescales. Specifically, the slow-timescale problem is a chance-constrained optimization, which minimizes power loss and regulates the voltage at the current time instant while limiting the probability of future voltage violations due to stochastic changes in power supply or demand. This control framework forms the basis of an optimal sizing problem, which determines the installation capacities of the control devices by minimizing the sum of power loss and capital cost. We develop computationally efficient heuristics to solve the optimal sizing problem and implement real-time control. Numerical experiments show that the proposed sizing and control schemes significantly improve the reliability of voltage control with a moderate increase in cost.

Harmonic distortion on voltages and currents increases with the increased penetration of Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) loads in distribution systems. Wind Generators (WGs), which are source of harmonic currents, have some common harmonic profiles with PEVs. Thus, WGs can be utilized in careful ways to subside the effect of PEVs on harmonic distortion. This work studies the impact of PEVs on harmonic distortions and integration of WGs to reduce it. A decoupled harmonic three-phase unbalanced distribution system model is developed in OpenDSS, where PEVs and WGs are represented by harmonic current loads and sources respectively. The developed model is first used to solve harmonic power flow on IEEE 34-bus distribution system with low, moderate, and high penetration of PEVs, and its impact on current/voltage Total Harmonic Distortions (THDs) is studied. This study shows that the voltage and current THDs could be increased upto 9.5% and 50% respectively, in case of distribution systems with high PEV penetration and these THD values are significantly larger than the limits prescribed by the IEEE standards. Next, carefully sized WGs are selected at different locations in the 34-bus distribution system to demonstrate reduction in the current/voltage THDs. In this work, a framework is also developed to find optimal size of WGs to reduce THDs below prescribed operational limits in distribution circuits with PEV loads. The optimization framework is implemented in MATLAB using Genetic Algorithm, which is interfaced with the harmonic power flow model developed in OpenDSS. The developed framework is used to find optimal size of WGs on the 34-bus distribution system with low, moderate, and high penetration of PEVs, with an objective to reduce voltage/current THD deviations throughout the distribution circuits. With the optimal size of WGs in distribution systems with PEV loads, the current and voltage THDs are reduced below 5% and 7% respectively, which are within the limits prescribed by IEEE.

Today, the contribution of the transportation sector on greenhouse gases is evident. The fast consumption of fossil fuels and its impact on the environment has given a strong impetus to the development of vehicles with better fuel economy. Hybrid electric vehicles fit into this context with different targets, starting from the reduction of emissions and fuel consumption, but also for performance and comfort enhancement. Vehicles exist with various missions; super sport cars usually aim to reach peak performance and to guarantee a great driving experience to the driver, but great attention must also be paid to fuel consumption. According to the vehicle mission, hybrid vehicles can differ in the powertrain configuration and the choice of the energy storage system. Lamborghini has recently invested in the development of hybrid super sport cars, due to performance and comfort reasons, with the possibility to reduce fuel consumption. This research activity has been conducted as a joint collaboration between the University of Bologna and the sportscar manufacturer, to analyze the impact of innovative energy storage solutions on the hybrid vehicle performance. Capacitors have been studied and modeled to analyze the pros and cons of such solution with respect to batteries. To this aim, a full simulation environment has been developed and validated to provide a concept design tool capable of precise results and able to foresee the longitudinal performance on regulated emission cycles and real driving conditions, with a focus on fuel consumption. In addition, the target of the research activity is to deepen the study of hybrid electric super sports cars in the concept development phase, focusing on defining the control strategies and the energy storage system’s technology that best suits the needs of the vehicles. This dissertation covers the key steps that have been carried out in the research project.

The PhD project that will be presented in this thesis is focused on the study and optimization of the production process for the manufacturing of electrical powertrain components in the automotive field using the laser beam welding process (LBW). The objective is to define, through experimental activities, an optimized process condition for applications in the electrical field that can be generalized, that is, which guarantees its reproducibility as the types of connections vary and which represents the basis for extending the method to future applications in e-mobility sector. The work developed along two lines of research, the convergence of which made it possible to create prototypes of battery modules based on different types of lithium-ion cells and stator windings for electric motors. On the one hand, the different welding configurations involving the production of batteries based on pouch cells and therefore the welding of aluminum and copper in dissimilar configuration were studied, while for the prismatic cells only one configuration was analyzed. On the other hand, the welding of pure copper hairpins with rectangular shape in edge joint configuration was studied for the production of stator windings. The experimental tests carried out have demonstrated the feasibility of using the LBW process for the production of electric powertrain components entirely designed and developed internally as the types of materials and welding configurations vary; the methodologies required for the characterization methods, necessary for the end-of-line tests, for the evaluation of the properties of the different joint configurations and components (battery and electric motor) were also defined with the aim of obtaining the best performance. The entire doctorate program was conducted in collaboration with Ferrari Auto S.p.A. and the direct industrial application of the issues addressed has been faced.

The goal of this simulation thesis is to present a tool for studying and eliminating various numerical problems observed while analyzing the behavior of the MIND cable during fast voltage polarity reversal. The tool is built on the MATLAB environment, where several simulations were run to achieve oscillation-free results. This thesis will add to earlier research on HVDC cables subjected to polarity reversals. Initially, the code does numerical simulations to analyze the electric field and charge density behavior of a MIND cable for certain scenarios such as before, during, and after polarity reversal. However, the primary goal is to reduce numerical oscillations from the charge density profile. The generated code is notable for its usage of the Arithmetic Mean Approach and the Non-Uniform Field Approach for filtering and minimizing oscillations even under time and temperature variations.

With the aim of heading towards a more sustainable future, there has been a noticeable increase in the installation of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) in power systems in the latest years. Besides the evident environmental benefits, RES pose several technological challenges in terms of scheduling, operation, and control of transmission and distribution power networks. Therefore, it raised the necessity of developing smart grids, relying on suitable distributed measurement infrastructure, for instance, based on Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs). Not only are such devices able to estimate a phasor, but they can also provide time information which is essential for real-time monitoring. This Thesis falls within this context by analyzing the uncertainty requirements of PMUs in distribution and transmission applications. Concerning the latter, the reliability of PMU measurements during severe power system events is examined, whereas for the first, typical configurations of distribution networks are studied for the development of target uncertainties. The second part of the Thesis, instead, is dedicated to the application of PMUs in low-inertia power grids. The replacement of traditional synchronous machines with inertia-less RES is progressively reducing the overall system inertia, resulting in faster and more severe events. In this scenario, PMUs may play a vital role in spite of the fact that no standard requirements nor target uncertainties are yet available. This Thesis deeply investigates PMU-based applications, by proposing a new inertia index relying only on local measurements and evaluating their reliability in low-inertia scenarios. It also develops possible uncertainty intervals based on the electrical instrumentation currently used in power systems and assesses the interoperability with other devices before and after contingency events.

Nowadays, some activities, such as subscribing an insurance policy or opening a bank account, are possible by navigating through a web page or a downloadable application. Since the user is often “hidden” behind a monitor or a smartphone, it is necessary a solution able to guarantee about their identity. Companies are often requiring the submission of a “proof-of-identity”, which usually consists in a picture of an identity document of the user, together with a picture or a brief video of themselves. This work describes a system whose purpose is the automation of these kinds of verifications.

Kuluvien vuosien aikana ei ole tehty kattavia tutkimuksia levyteollisuuden sähkönkulutuksista, joten on aika selvittää suurimpien sähkökäyttöjen kulutukset sekä muodostaa tutkittaville tehtaille energiataseet. Tutkittavia tehtaita ovat OSB- ja lastulevytehtaat. Yksittäisten sähkömoottoreiden kulutukset saadaan selville käyttämällä hyväksi teoreettisia lähteitä, kenttä-ja laboratoriotutkimusta. Ympäristölainsäädäntö ja siihen kiinteästi liittyvä lupakäytäntö muodostavat levyteollisuudelle yhden viimeaikojen suurimmista haasteista. Tulevaisuudessa lainsäädäntö tulee vielä entisestäänkin kiristymään. Euroopan ympäristölainsäädäntö perustuu pitkälti yhtenäislupadirektiiviin eli IPPC-direktiiviin. Direktiivin keskeinen osa on ympäristöluvan hankkiminen, koska teollista toimintaa ei voi harjoittaa ilman hyväksyttyä viranomaisen lupaa. Lupa myös velvoittaa toiminnanharjoittajan käyttämään parasta käyttökelpoista tekniikkaa päästöjen kontrolloinnissa. Yhdysvalloissa parhaan käyttökelpoisen tekniikan (BAT) vaatimus on sisälletty ympäristövirasto EPA:n MACT-standardeihin. Saatavilla tiedoilla on keskeinen rooli tehtaiden jokapäiväisessä toiminnassa. Analysoinnin tarpeeseen vaikuttaa osaltaan nykyisen toimintaympäristön muutosherkkyys ja levymarkkinoiden kireä kilpailutilanne.
