Arsenogorceixite BaAl3AsO3(OH)(AsO4,PO4)(OH,F)6 belongs to the crandallite mineral subgroup of the alunite supergroup. Arsenogorceixite forms a continuous series of solid solutions with related minerals including gorceixite, goyazite, arsenogoyazite, plumbogummite and philipsbornite. Two minerals from (a) Germany and (b) from Ashburton Downs, Australia were analysed by Raman spectroscopy. The spectra show some commonality but the intensities of the peaks vary. Sharp intense Raman bands for the German sample, are observed at 972 and 814 cm−1 attributed to the ν1 PO43− and AsO43− symmetric stretching modes. Raman bands at 1014, 1057, 1148 and 1160 cm−1 are attributed to the ν1 PO2 symmetric stretching mode and ν3 PO43− antisymmetric stretching vibrations. Raman bands at 764 and 776 cm−1 and 758 and 756 cm−1 are assigned to the ν3 AsO43− antisymmetric stretching vibrations. For the Australian mineral, the ν1 PO43− band is found at 973 cm−1. The intensity of the arsenate bands observed at 814, 838 and 870 cm−1 is greatly enhanced. Two low intensity Raman bands at 1307 and 1332 cm−1 are assigned to hydroxyl deformation modes. The intense Raman band at 441 cm−1 with a shoulder at 462 cm−1 is assigned to the ν2 PO43− bending mode. Raman bands at 318 and 340 cm−1 are attributed to the (AsO4)3−ν2 bending. The broad band centred at 3301 cm−1 is assigned to water stretching vibrations and the sharper peak at 3473 cm−1 is assigned to the OH stretching vibrations. The observation of strong water stretching vibrations brings into question the actual formula of arsenogorceixite. It is proposed the formula is better written as BaAl3AsO3(OH)(AsO4,PO4)(OH,F)6·xH2O. The observation of both phosphate and arsenate bands provides a clear example of solid solution formation.

Three wardite mineral samples from different origins have been analysed by vibrational spectroscopy. The mineral is unusual in that it belongs to a unique symmetry class, namely the tetragonal-trapezohedral group. The structure of wardite contains layers of corner-linked –OH bridged MO6 octahedra stacked along the tetragonal C-axis in a four-layer sequence and linked by PO4 groups. Consequentially not all phosphate units are identical. Thus, two intense Raman bands observed at 995 and 1051 cm-1 are assigned to the ν1 PO43- symmetric stretching mode. Intense Raman bands are observed at 605 and 618 cm-1 with shoulders at 578 and 589 cm-1 are assigned to the ν4 out of plane bending modes of the PO43-. The observation of multiple bands supports the concept of non-equivalent phosphate units in the structure. Sharp infrared bands are observed at 3544 and 3611 cm-1 are attributed to the OH stretching vibrations of the hydroxyl units. Vibrational spectroscopy enables subtle details of the molecular structure of wardite to be determined.

The two minerals borickyite and delvauxite CaFe3+4(PO4,SO4)2(OH)8•4-6H2O have the same formula. Are the minerals identical or different? The minerals borickyite and delvauxite have been characterised by Raman spectroscopy. The minerals are related to the minerals diadochite and destinezite. Both minerals are amorphous. Delvauxite appears to vary in crystallinity from amorphous to semi-crystalline. The minerals are often X-ray non-diffracting. The minerals are found in soils and may be described as ‘colloidal’ minerals. Vibrational spectroscopy enables an assessment of the molecular structure of borickyite and delvauxite. Bands are assigned to phosphate and sulphate stretching and bending modes. Multiple water bending and stretching modes imply that non-equivalent water molecules in the structure exist with different hydrogen bond strengths. The two minerals show differing spectra and must be considered as different minerals.

In this paper, we report on many phosphate containing natural minerals found in the Jenolan Caves - Australia. Such minerals are formed by the reaction of bat guano and clays from the caves. Among these cave minerals is the montgomeryite mineral [Ca4MgAl4(PO4)6.(OH)4.12H2O]. The presence of montgomeryite in deposits of the Jenolan Caves - Australia has been identified by X-ray diffraction (XRD). Raman spectroscopy complimented with infrared spectroscopy has been used to characterize the crystal structure of montgomeryite. The Raman spectrum of a standard montgomeryite mineral is identical to that of the Jenolan Caves sample. Bands are assigned to H2PO4-, OH and NH stretching vibrations. By using a combination of XRD and Raman spectroscopy, the existence of montgomeryite in the Jenolan Caves - Australia has been proven. A mechanism for the formation of montgomeryite is proposed.

The crosstalk between fibroblasts and keratinocytes is a vital component of the wound healing process, and involves the activity of a number of growth factors and cytokines. In this work, we develop a mathematical model of this crosstalk in order to elucidate the effects of these interactions on the regeneration of collagen in a wound that heals by second intention. We consider the role of four components that strongly affect this process: transforming growth factor-beta, platelet-derived growth factor, interleukin-1 and keratinocyte growth factor. The impact of this network of interactions on the degradation of an initial fibrin clot, as well as its subsequent replacement by a matrix that is mainly comprised of collagen, is described through an eight-component system of nonlinear partial differential equations. Numerical results, obtained in a two-dimensional domain, highlight key aspects of this multifarious process such as reepithelialisation. The model is shown to reproduce many of the important features of normal wound healing. In addition, we use the model to simulate the treatment of two pathological cases: chronic hypoxia, which can lead to chronic wounds; and prolonged inflammation, which has been shown to lead to hypertrophic scarring. We find that our model predictions are qualitatively in agreement with previously reported observations, and provide an alternative pathway for gaining insight into this complex biological process.

The mineral brushite has been synthesised by mixing calcium ions and hydrogen phosphate anions to mimic the reactions in a Cave. The vibrational spectra of the synthesised brushite were compared with that of the natural Cave mineral. Bands attributable to the PO43- and HPO42- anions are observed. Brushite, both synthetic and natural, is characterised by an intense sharp band at 985 cm-1 with a shoulder at 1000 cm-1. Characteristic bending modes are observed in the 300 to 600 cm-1 region. The spectra of the synthesised brushite matches very well the spectrum of brushite from the Moorba Cave, Western Australia.

Background: Despite the increasing clinical problems with metaphyseal fractures, most experimental studies investigate the healing of diaphyseal fractures. Although the mouse would be the preferable species to study the molecular and genetic aspects of metaphyseal fracture healing, a murine model does not exist yet. Using a special locking plate system, we herein introduce a new model, which allows the analysis of metaphyseal bone healing in mice. Methods: In 24 CD-1 mice the distal metaphysis of the femur was osteotomized. After stabilization with the locking plate, bone repair was analyzed radiologically, biomechanically, and histologically after 2 (n = 12) and 5 wk (n = 12). Additionally, the stiffness of the bone-implant construct was tested biomechanically ex vivo. Results: The torsional stiffness of the bone-implant construct was low compared with nonfractured control femora (0.23 ± 0.1 Nmm/°versus 1.78 ± 0.15 Nmm/°, P < 0.05). The cause of failure was a pullout of the distal screw. At 2 wk after stabilization, radiological analysis showed that most bones were partly bridged. At 5 wk, all bones showed radiological union. Accordingly, biomechanical analyses revealed a significantly higher torsional stiffness after 5 wk compared with that after 2 wk. Successful healing was indicated by a torsional stiffness of 90% of the contralateral control femora. Histological analyses showed new woven bone bridging the osteotomy without external callus formation and in absence of any cartilaginous tissue, indicating intramembranous healing. Conclusion: With the model introduced herein we report, for the first time, successful metaphyseal bone repair in mice. The model may be used to obtain deeper insights into the molecular mechanisms of metaphyseal fracture healing. © 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The molecular structure of the mixed anion mineral Clinotyrolite Ca2Cu9[(As,S)O4]4(OH)10•10(H2O) has been determined by the combination of Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Characteristic bands associated with arsenate, sulphate and hydroxyl units are identified. Broad bands in the OH stretching region are observed and are resolved into component bands. Estimates of hydrogen bond distances were made using a Libowitzky function and both short and long hydrogen bonds are identified. Two intense Raman bands at 842 and ~796 cm-1 are assigned to the ν1 (AsO4)3- symmetric stretching and ν3 (AsO4)3- antisymmetric stretching modes. The comparatively sharp Raman band at 980 cm-1 is assigned to the ν1 (SO4)2- symmetric stretching mode and a broad Raman spectral profile centred upon 1100 cm-1 is attributed to the ν3 (SO4)2- antisymmetric stretching mode.

The molecular structure of the sodium borate mineral ameghinite NaB3O3(OH)4 has been determined by the use of vibrational spectroscopy. The crystal structure consists of isolated [B3O3(OH)4]- units formed by one tetrahedron and two triangles. H bonds and Na atoms link these polyanions to form a 3-dimensional framework. The Raman spectrum is dominated by an intense band at 1027 cm-1, attributed to BO stretching vibrations of both the trigonal and tetrahedral boron. A series of Raman bands at 1213, 1245 and 1281cm-1 are ascribed to BOH in-plane bending modes. The infrared spectra are characterized by strong overlap of broad multiple bands. An intense Raman band found at 620 cm-1 is attributed to the bending modes of trigonal and tetrahedral boron. Multiple Raman bands in the OH stretching region are observed at 3206, 3249 and 3385 cm-1. Raman spectroscopy coupled with infrared spectroscopy has enabled aspects about the molecular structure of the borate mineral ameghinite to be assessed.

Critical-sized bone defect regeneration is a remaining clinical concern. Numerous scaffold-based strategies are currently being investigated to enable in vivo bone defect healing. However, a deeper understanding of how a scaffold influences the tissue formation process and how this compares to endogenous bone formation or to regular fracture healing is missing. It is hypothesized that the porous scaffold architecture can serve as a guiding substrate to enable the formation of a structured fibrous network as a prerequirement for later bone formation. An ovine, tibial, 30-mm critical-sized defect is used as a model system to better understand the effect of the scaffold architecture on cell organization, fibrous tissue, and mineralized tissue formation mechanisms in vivo. Tissue regeneration patterns within two geometrically distinct macroscopic regions of a specific scaffold design, the scaffold wall and the endosteal cavity, are compared with tissue formation in an empty defect (negative control) and with cortical bone (positive control). Histology, backscattered electron imaging, scanning small-angle X-ray scattering, and nanoindentation are used to assess the morphology of fibrous and mineralized tissue, to measure the average mineral particle thickness and the degree of alignment, and to map the local elastic indentation modulus. The scaffold proves to function as a guiding substrate to the tissue formation process. It enables the arrangement of a structured fibrous tissue across the entire defect, which acts as a secondary supporting network for cells. Mineralization can then initiate along the fibrous network, resulting in bone ingrowth into a critical-sized defect, although not in complete bridging of the defect. The fibrous network morphology, which in turn is guided by the scaffold architecture, influences the microstructure of the newly formed bone. These results allow a deeper understanding of the mode of mineral tissue formation and the way this is influenced by the scaffold architecture. Vibrational spectroscopy has been used to characterise the mineral creaseyite Cu2Pb2(Fe,Al)2(Si5O17)·6H2O. The mineral is found in the oxidised zone of base metal deposits and interestingly is associated with copper silicate minerals including ajoite, kinoite, chrysocolla as well as wulfenite, willemite, mimetite and wickenburgite. Creaseyite is a mineral with zeolitic properties. A Raman band at 998 cm−1 is assigned to the SiO stretching vibration of SiO3 units. The Raman band at 1071 cm−1 is assigned to the SiO stretching vibrations of the Si2O5 units. Raman bands are found at 2750, 2902, 3162, 3470 and 3525 cm−1. The band at 3525 cm−1 is attributed to zeolitic water. Other bands are assigned to water coordinated to the metal cations. Vibrational spectroscopy enables aspects of the molecular structure of creaseyite to be determined.

Mechanically well-defined stabilization systems have only recently become available, providing standardized conditions for studying the role of the mechanical environment on mouse bone fracture healing. The aim of this study was to characterize the time course of strength recovery and callus development of mouse femoral osteotomies stabilized with either low or high flexibility (in bending and torsion) internal fixation plates. Animals were euthanized and femora excised at 14, 21, and 28 days post-osteotomy for microCT analysis and torsional strength testing. While a larger mineralized callus was observed in osteotomies under more flexible conditions at all time points, the earlier bridging of the mineralized callus under less flexible conditions by 1 week resulted in an earlier recovery of torsional strength in mice stabilized with low flexibility fixation. Ultimate torque values for these bones were significantly higher at 14 and 21 days post-osteotomy compared to bones with the more flexible stabilization. Our study confirms the high reproducibility of the results that are achieved with this new implant system, therefore making it ideal for studying the influence of the mechanical environment on murine fracture healing under highly standardized conditions.

A number of mathematical models investigating certain aspects of the complicated process of wound healing are reported in the literature in recent years. However, effective numerical methods and supporting error analysis for the fractional equations which describe the process of wound healing are still limited. In this paper, we consider numerical simulation of fractional model based on the coupled advection-diffusion equations for cell and chemical concentration in a polar coordinate system. The space fractional derivatives are defined in the Left and Right Riemann-Liouville sense. Fractional orders in advection and diffusion terms belong to the intervals (0; 1) or (1; 2], respectively. Some numerical techniques will be used. Firstly, the coupled advection-diffusion equations are decoupled to a single space fractional advection-diffusion equation in a polar coordinate system. Secondly, we propose a new implicit difference method for simulating this equation by using the equivalent of the Riemann-Liouville and Gr¨unwald-Letnikov fractional derivative definitions. Thirdly, its stability and convergence are discussed, respectively. Finally, some numerical results are given to demonstrate the theoretical analysis.

The mineral svanbergite SrAl 3(PO 4,SO 4) 2(OH) 6 is a hydroxy phosphate-sulphate mineral belonging to the beudantite subgroup of alunites and has been characterised by vibrational spectroscopy. Bands at various wavenumbers were assigned to the different vibrational modes of svanbergite, which were then associated with the structure of the mineral. Bands were primarily assigned to phosphate and sulphate stretching and bending modes. Two symmetric stretching modes for both phosphate and sulphate supported the concept of non-equivalent phosphate and sulphate units in the mineral structure. Bands in the OH stretching region enabled hydrogen bond distances to be calculated. Comparison of the hydrogen bond distances and the calculated hydrogen bond distances from the structure models indicates that hydrogen bonding in svanbergite occurs between the two OH units rather than OH to SO42- units.
