Fiber metal laminates are the frontline materials for aeronautical and space structures. These composites consists of layers of 2024-T3-aluminum alloy and composite prepreg layers. When the composite layer is a carbon fiber prepreg, the fiber metal laminate, named Carall, offers significant improvements over current available materials for aircraft structures. While weight reduction and improved damage tolerance characteristics were the prime drivers to develop this new family of materials, it turns out that they have additional benefits, which become more and more important for today's designers, such as cost reduction and improved safety. The degradation of composites is due to environmental effects mainly on the chemical and/or physical properties of the polymer matrix leading to loss of adhesion of fiber/resin interface. Also, the reduction of fiber strength and stiffness are expected due to environmental degradation. Changes in interface/interphase properties leads to more pronounced changes in shear properties than any other mechanical properties. In this work, the influence of moisture in shear properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites and Carall have been investigated by using interlaminar shear (ILSS) and Iosipescu tests. It was observed that hygrothermal conditioning reduces the Iosipescu shear strength of CF/E and Carall composites due to the moisture absorption in these materials. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. In this paper a modified chalcogenide glass was studied by X-ray powder diffraction, differential thermal analysis, infrared and Raman scattering spectroscopies. The study of this new matrix opens new perspectives to fabricate Pr3+-doped fibers to operate as an optical amplifier in the 1.3 mum telecommunications window. The Pr3+-doped 70Ga(2)S(3)-30La(2)S(3) glass was modified through the substitution of La2S3 by La2O3, which improves the thermal stability of these glasses without any modification of phonon energy. The possibility to pull a fiber from this glass system without any devitrification is easily achieved.

The surface glycoprotein gp43, a highly immunogenic component of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, is used in the serodiagnosis of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) and has recently been shown to specifically bind the extracellular matrix protein laminin, Binding to laminin induces the increased adhesion of the fungus to epithelial cells; a hamster testicle infection model has shown that the gp43-dependent binding of fungal cells to laminin enhances their pathogenicity in vivo. We report on the production and characterization of 12 monoclonal antibodies against the gp43 that recognize peptide sequences in the molecule detecting at least three different epitopes as well as different isoforms of this antigen. MAbs interfered in the fungal pathogenicity in vivo either by inhibiting or enhancing granuloma formation and tissue destruction, Results suggest that P. brasiliensis propagules may start infection in man by strongly adhering to human lung cells, Thus, laminin-mediated fungal adhesion to human lung carcinoma (A549) cells was much more intense than to Madin-Darby canine kidney cells (MDCK), indicating differences in binding affinity, Subsequent growth of fungi bound to the lung cells could induce the granulomatous inflammatory reaction characteristic of PCM. Both steps are greatly stimulated by laminin binding in infective cells expressing gp43.

The tension-tension fatigue behavior of metal/fiber laminates (MFLs) has been investigated. These MFLs were produced with carbon fiber and by treating the aluminum foil to promote adhesion bonding by two methods: sulfuric-boric-oxalic acid anodization (SBOA) and chromic acid anodization (CAA). The surface treatments were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques and roughness measurements. It was observed that MFL specimens produced with SBOA treatments presents comparable mechanical results when compared with MFLs produced with CAA treatment. Microstructural observations of the fracture surfaces by SEM show hackle formation is the predominant damage mechanism.

Curauá fiber processing characterization has been performed throughout the different processing steps. Unsaturated polyester has been used as matrix in the production of curauá reinforced composite samples. Compression molding process has been used to prepare the samples. Tensile strength, impact resistance, flexural strength, Young's modulus and elongation at break have been accessed for curauá composites in comparison with fiberglass composites. Mechanical properties were found not to attend the company's internal standards specification. However, the work has shown some alternatives to solve these problems such as the modification of equipment characteristics and resin formulation, the necessity of incorporation of a higher content of fiber and the possibility of using a new type of filler. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites have been used in wide variety of applications including, aerospace, marine, sporting equipment as well as in the defense sector due to their outstanding properties at low density. In many of their applications, moisture absorption takes place which may result in a reduction in mechanical properties even at lower temperature service. In this work, the viscoelastic properties, such as storage modulus (E′) and loss modulus (E″), were obtained through vibration damping tests for three carbon fiber/epoxy composite families up to the saturation point (6 weeks). Three carbon fiber/epoxy composites having [0/0] s, [0/90] s, and [±45] s orientations were studied. During vibration tests the storage modulus (E′) and loss modulus (E″) were monitored as a function of moisture uptake, and it was observed that the natural frequencies and E′ values decreased with the increase during hygrothermal conditioning due to the matrix plasticization. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Aim: Root conditioning is aimed at smear layer removal and at dental matrix collagen exposure, which may promote periodontal regeneration. This in vitro study assessed smear layer removal, collagen fiber exposure and the influence of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) application on adhesion of blood cells to the root surface using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Materials and methods: Scaled root samples (n = 160) were set in five groups and conditioned with: group I - control group (saline solution); group II (EDTA 24%); group III (citric acid 25%); group IV (tetracycline hydrochloride 50 mg/ml); group V (sodium citrate 30%). Eighty samples were assessed using the root surface modification index (RSMI). The other eighty samples were set in two groups. The first group (n = 40) received PRP gel application with a soft brush and the second group (n = 40) received PRP application and then a blood drop. The fibrin clot formation was assessed in the first group and the blood cells adhesion was assessed in the second group using the BEAI (blood elements adhesion index). A previously trained, calibrated, and blind examiner evaluated photomicrographs. Statistical analysis was performed using the Kruskal-Wallis's and Dunn's tests. Results: Group III attained the best results for RSMI and BEAI. Moreover, it was the only group showing fibrin clot formation. Conclusion: Citric acid was the most efficient conditioner for smear layer removal, collagen fiber exposure and blood cell adhesion. Moreover, it was the only group showing fibrin clot formation after PRP application. Clinical significance: This study demonstrated that root conditioning followed by PRP application may favor blood cell adhesion on root surface which may optimize periodontal healing.

The effect of carbon fiber surface characteristics on flexural properties of structural composites is studied in this work. Two types of intermediate modulus carbon fibers were used: T800HB and IM7. Results revealed that higher mechanical properties are linked with higher interfacial adhesion. Morphologies and chemical compositions of commercial carbon fibers (CF) were characterized by Fourier Transformed Infra Red (FTIR) and Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM). Comparing the results, the T800HB apparently has more roughness, since the IM7 seems to be recovered for a polymeric film. On other hand, the IM7 one shows higher interactivity with epoxy resin system Cycom 890 RTM. Composites produced with Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) were tested on a flexural trial. Interfacial adhesion difference was showed with SEM and Dynamic Mechanical Analyses (DMA), justifying the higher flexural behavior of composites made with IM7 fibers. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
