A novel detection technique to estimate the amount of chirp in fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) is proposed. This method is based on the fact that reflectivity at central wavelength of FBG reflection changes with strain/temperature gradient (linear chirp) applied to the same. Transfer matrix approach was used to vary different grating parameters (length, strength and apodization) to optimize variation of reflectivity with linear chirp. Analysis is done for different sets of `FBG length-refractive index strength' combinations for which reflectivity vary linearly with linear chirp over a decent measurement range. This article acts as a guideline to choose appropriate grating parameters in designing sensing apparatus based on change in reflectivity at central wavelength of FBG reflection.

We report here an experimental investigation for establishing and quantifying a link between the growth and decay characteristics of fiber Bragg gratings. One of the key aspects of our work is the determination of the defect energy distribution from the grating characteristics measured during their fabrication. We observe a strong correlation between the growth-based defect energy distribution and that obtained through accelerated aging experiments, paving the way for predicting the decay characteristics of fiber Bragg gratings from their growth data. Such a prediction is significant in simplifying the postfabrication steps required to enhance the thermal stability of fiber Bragg gratings. (c) 2011 Optical Society of America

Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and Long Period Grating (LPG) chemical sensors are one of the most exciting developments in the field of optical fiber sensors. In this paper we have proposed a simple and effective chemical sensor based on FBG and LPG techniques for detecting the traces of cadmium (Cd) in drinking water at ppm level. The sensitiveness of these two has been compared. Also, these results have been compared with the results obtained by sophisticated spectroscopic atomic absorption and emission spectrometer instruments. For proper designing of FBG to act as a concentration sensor, the cladding region of the grating has been etched using HF solution. We have characterized the FBG concentration sensor sensitivities for different solutions of Cd concentrations varying from 0.01 ppm to 0.04 ppm and observed reflected spectrum in FBG and transmitted spectrum in LPG using Optical Spectrum Analyzer. Proper reagents have been used in the solutions for detection of the Cd species. The overall shift in wavelength is 10 nm in case of LPG and the shift of Bragg wavelength is 0.07 nm in case of FBG for 0.01-0.04 ppm concentrations. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel scheme is proposed to transform a Gaussian pulse to a millimeter-wave frequency modulation pulse by using an apodized Moire fiber Bragg grating in radio-over-fiber system. The relation between the input and output pulses is analyzed theoretically by Fourier transformation method and the requirements for the proposed fiber grating are presented. An apodized Moire fiber Bragg grating is designed and its characteristics are studied. It is shown that the proposed device is feasible, and the new scheme is believed to be an effective solution for the generation of millimeter-wave sub-carrier in future radio-over-fiber systems. Two fiber grating sensors for high-temperature measurements are proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The interrogation technologies of the sensor systems are all simple, low cost but effective. In the first sensor system, the sensor head is comprised of one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and two metal rods. The lengths of the rods are different from each other. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the rods are also different from each other. The FBG will be strained by the sensor head when the temperature to be measured changes. The temperature is measured based on the wavelength-shifts of the FBG induced by the strain. In the second sensor system, a long-period fiber grating (LPG) is used as the high-temperature sensor head. The LPG is very-high-temperature stable CO2-Aaser-induced grating and has a linear function of wavelength-temperature in the range of 0 - 800 degrees C. A dynamic range of 0 - 800 degrees C and a resolution of 1 degrees C have been obtained by either the first or the second sensor system. The experimental results agree with theoretical analyses. A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor system based on an interrogating technique by two parallel matched gratings was designed and theoretically discussed. With an interrogation grating playing the role of temperature compensation grating simultaneously, the wavelength drifts induced by temperature and strain were discriminated. Additionally, the expressions of temperature and strain were deduced for our solution, and dual-value problem and cross sensitivity were solved synchronously through data processing. The influence of the FBG's parameters on the dynamic range and precision was discussed. Besides, the change of environment temperature cannot influence the dynamic range of the sensor system through temperature tuning. The system proposed in this paper will be of great significance to accelerate the real engineering applications of FBG sensing techniques. (c) 2007 Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

The use of alpha-power chirped fiber Bragg gratings for dispersion cancellation in an optical fiber link is discussed. Numerical and theoretical investigation of recompressing the dispersion-broadened pulse by using alpha-power chirped gratings is made, which shows that, the dispersion-broadened Gaussian pulse after 100 km standard fiber (with zero dispersion at lambda = 1.3 mu m) trnasmission at lambda = 1.55 mu m with initial width of T-FWHM = 33ps (full width at half maximum) can be perfectly recompressed with the peak reflectivity of 82% by using a 30 mm long alpha-power chirped fiber grating with proper a value and optimal grating parameters.

A novel architecture for microwave/millimeter-wave signal generation and data modulation using a fiber-grating-based distributed feedback laser has been proposed in this letter. For demonstration, a 155.52-Mb/s data stream on a 16.9-GHz subcarrier has been transmitted and recovered successfully. It has been proved that this technology would be of benefit to future microwave data transmission systems.

We demonstrate a novel and simple sensor interrogation scheme for fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based sensing systems. In this scheme, a chirped FBG based Sagnac loop is used as a wavelength-dependent receiver, and a stable and linear readout response is realised. It is a signijkant advantage of this scheme that the sensitivity and the measurement wavelength range can be easily adjhsted by controlling the chirp of the FBG or using an optical delay line in the Sagnac loop.

We report an in-fiber polarizer implemented using a 45° tilted FBG. Polarization extinction ratio of 28dB at 1550nm and HMFW over 80nm has been demonstrated. When the un-polarized light passes this device, 99.5% of degree of polarization can be achieved.
