In the present investigation, the wear behaviour of a creep-resistant AE42 magnesium alloy and its composites reinforced with Saffil short fibres and SiC particles in various combinations is examined in the longitudinal direction i.e., the plane containing random fibre orientation is perpendicular to the steel counter-face. Wear tests are conducted on a pin-on-disc set-up under dry sliding condition having a constant sliding velocity of 0.837 m/s for a constant sliding distance of 2.5 km in the load range of 10-40 N. It is observed that the wear rate increases with increase in load for the alloy and the composites, as expected. Wear rate of the composites is lower than the alloy and the hybrid composites exhibit a lower wear rate than the Saffil short fibres reinforced composite at all the loads. Therefore, the partial replacement of Saffil short fibres by an equal volume fraction of SiC particles not only reduces the cost but also improves the wear resistance of the composite. Microstructural investigation of the surface and subsurface of the worn pin and wear debris is carried out to explain the observed results and to understand the wear mechanisms. It is concluded that the presence of SiC particles in the hybrid composites improves the wear resistance because these particles remain intact and retain their load bearing capacity even at the highest load employed, they promote the formation of iron-rich transfer layer and they also delay the fracture of Saffil short fibres to higher loads. Under the experimental conditions used in the present investigation, the dominant wear mechanism is found to be abrasion for the AE42 alloy and its composites. It is accompanied by severe plastic deformation of surface layers in case of alloy and by the fracture of Saffil short fibres as well as the formation of iron-rich transfer layer in case of composites.

The creep behaviour of a creep-resistant AE42 magnesium alloy reinforced with Saffil short fibres and SiC particulates in various combinations has been investigated in the transverse direction, i.e., the plane containing random fibre orientation was perpendicular to the loading direction, in the temperature range of 175-300 degrees C at the stress levels ranging from 60 to 140 MPa using impression creep test technique. Normal creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate decreasing with strain and then reaching a steady state, is observed at 175 degrees C at all the stresses employed, and up to 80 MPa stress at 240 degrees C. A reverse creep behaviour, i.e., strain rate increasing with strain, then reaching a steady state and then decreasing, is observed above 80 MPa stress at 240 degrees C and at all the stress levels at 300 degrees C. This pattern remains the same for all the composites employed. The reverse creep behaviour is found to be associated with fibre breakage. The apparent stress exponent is found to be very high for all the composites. However, after taking the threshold stress into account, the true stress exponent is found to range between 4 and 7, which suggests viscous glide and dislocation climb being the dominant creep mechanisms. The apparent activation energy Q(C) was not calculated due to insufficient data at any stress level either for normal or reverse creep behaviour. The creep resistance of the hybrid composites is found to be comparable to that of the composite reinforced with 20% Saffil short fibres alone at all the temperatures and stress levels investigated. The creep rate of the composites in the transverse direction is found to be higher than the creep rate in the longitudinal direction reported in a previous paper.

The deformation and fracture response of a bulk metallic glass (BMG) post-annealing above the glass transition temperature is examined. The toughness of the glass-matrix composite exhibits a sharp transition beyond a critical volume fraction of crystallization to values as low as that of brittle silicate glass. Instrumented indentation tests supplemented by impact tests were used to study this ductile to brittle transition exhibited by the partially crystallized samples. Indentation on the anneal-embrittled specimens shows lateral cracks in addition to cracks along the corners. The applicability of the Poisson's ratio-toughness correlation with respect to partially crystallized samples is also investigated.

This paper describes the experimental and theoretical studies carried out on particulate composites consisting of BaTiO3, graphite, and rubber. It is shown that such composites exhibit a positive voltage coefficient of resistance beyond a certain voltage. A theoretical model developed to explain the observed V-R characteristics and their dependence on parameters of the composite like composition and grain size of the particles is also described. These composites seem to be useful as varistors with positive voltage coefficient of resistance and may find applications as voltage-regulating devices. The optimum conditions for producing cast aluminium alloy-mica particle composites, by stirring mica particles (40 to 120 mgrm) in molten aluminium alloys (above their liquidus temperatures), followed by casting in permanent moulds, are described. Addition of magnesium either as pieces along with mica particles on the surface of the melts or as a previously added alloying element was found to be necessary to disperse appreciable quantities (1.5 to 2 wt.%) of mica particles in the melts and retain them as uniform dispersions in castings under the conditions of present investigation. These castings can be remelted and degassed with nitrogen at least once with the retention of about 80% mica particles in the castings. Electron probe micro-analysis of these cast composites showed that magnesium added to the surface of the melt along with mica has a tendency to segregate around the mica particles, apparently improving the dispersability for mica particles in liquid aluminium alloys. The mechanical properties of the aluminium alloy-mica particle composite decrease with an increase in mica content, however, even at 2.2% the composite has a tensile strength of 14.22 kg mm–2 with 1.1% elongation, a compression strength of 42.61 kg mm–2, and an impact strength of 0.30 kgm cm–2. The properties are adequate for certain bearing applications, and the aluminium-mica composite bearings were found to run under boundary lubrication, semi-dry and dry friction conditions whereas the matrix alloy (without mica) bearings seized or showed stick slip under the same conditions.

One of the applications of nanomaterials is as reinforcements in composites, wherein small additions of nanomaterials lead to large enhancements in mechanical properties. There have been extensive studies in the literature on composites where a polymer matrix is reinforced by a single nanomaterial such as carbon nanotubes. In this article, we examine the significant synergistic effects observed when 2 different types of nanocarbons are incorporated in a polymer matrix. Thus, binary combinations of nanodiamond, few-layer graphene, and single-walled nanotubes have been used to reinforce polyvinyl alcohol. The mechanical properties of the resulting composites, evaluated by the nanoindentation technique, show extraordinary synergy, improving the stiffness and hardness by as much as 400% compared to those obtained with single nanocarbon reinforcements. These results suggest a way of designing advanced materials with extraordinary mechanical properties by incorporating small amounts of 2 nanomaterials such as graphene plus nanodiamond or nanodiamond plus carbon nanotube.

Separately, polyphenols and plant cell walls (PCW) are important contributors to the health benefits associated with fruits and vegetables. However, interactions with PCW which occur either during food preparation or mastication may affect bioaccessibility and hence bioavailability of polyphenols. Binding interactions between anthocyanins, phenolic acids (PAs) and PCW components, were evaluated using both a bacterial cellulose-pectin model system and a black carrot puree system. The majority of available polyphenols bound to PCW material with 60-70% of available anthocyanins and PAs respectively binding to black carrot puree PCW matter. Once bound, release of polyphenols using acidified methanol is low with only similar to 20% of total anthocyanins to similar to 30% of PAs being released. Less than 2% of bound polyphenol was released after in vitro gastric and small intestinal (S.I.) digestion for both the model system and the black carrot puree PCW matter. Confocal laser scanning microscopy shows localised binding of anthocyanins to PCW. Very similar patterns of binding for anthocyanins and PAs suggest that PAs form complexes with anthocyanins and polysaccharides. Time dependent changes in extractability with acidified methanol but not the total bound fraction suggests that initial nonspecific deposition on cellulose surfaces is followed by rearrangement of the bound molecules. Minimal release of anthocyanins and PAs after simulated gastric and S.I. digestion indicates that polyphenols in fruits and vegetables which bind to the PCW will be transported to the colon where they would be expected to be released by the action of cell wall degrading bacteria.

The spreadability of SAE-30 oil on Al-12 Si base (LM-13) alloy containing dispersed graphite particles about 50 μm average size in its matrix is found to be greater than on either LM-13 with no graphite or brass. It is also found that the spreadability on LM-13 base alloys increase with increasing volume of graphite dispersion in the matrix of these alloys. Further increases in the spreadability of oil on machined LM-13-graphite particle composite test surfaces occur if these are rubbed initially against control discs of either LM-13 or grey cast iron. The formation of a triboinduced graphite-rich layer, confirmed by esca, appears to be responsible for the improved oil spreadability on the rubbed test surfaces of LM-13 base alloys as compared to the as-machined test surfaces prior to rubbing. The triboinduced layer of graphite is apparently responsible for the observed reduction in the friction, wear and seizing tendency of triboelements made from aluminium alloy-graphite particle composites.

Postharvest treatments with nano-silver (NS) significantly improve water relations and therefore prolong the vase life of several cut flowers, including rose (Rosa hybrida cv. Movie Star). The efficacy of NS in alleviating bacterial related blockage in the stem-ends of cut cv. Movie Star was further investigated. Four dominant bacteria strains Pseudomonas fluorescens, Aeromonas sp., Comamonas acidovorans and Chryseomonas luteola were isolated from the stem-ends of cut roses. High numbers of the isolated bacteria at 10 8colony forming unitsmL -1 vase solution led to a sharp reduction in vase life, flower fresh weight, and water uptake. In vitro assessments of the antibacterial activity of NS against the four bacterial strains was >80% at 5mgL -1 and nearly 100% at 50mgL -1. Bacterial blockage in the stem-ends of cut cv. Movie Star roses with and without NS pulse treatments was assessed during the vase period using scanning electron microscopy. Following a 50mgL -1 NS pulse treatment, there were few bacterial cells on the cut surface of the stems even on day 7. Moreover, no obvious bacterial blockage was observed inside the xylem vessels. In contrast, the cut surface of control stems was covered with bacteria and associated amorphous substances, and numerous bacteria were found in the xylem vessels. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

The relative efficacies of three chemically different nano-silver (NS) formulations were evaluated for their potential to extend the vase life of short-lived cut Acacia holosericea foliage. The novel proprietary formulations were neutral NS, acidic NS and ionic NS. They were characterised in terms of particle size, pH value, colour and odour. The NS treatments were applied as vase (lower concentrations) or pulse (higher concentrations) solutions. Among the treatments compared, neutral NS as a 4 mg L-1 vase solution or as a 40 mg L-1 24 h pulse treatment and acidic NS as a 0.5 mg L-1 vase solution or as a 5 mg L-1 24 h pulse treatment significantly (P <= 0.05) extended the vase life of A. holosericea. Vase life extensions over the deionised water (DI) controls were associated with better maintenance of relative fresh weight and vase water uptake, suppression of bacterial growth in the vase water and stem-end, and delaying stem blockage. In contrast, ionic-NS applied as a 0.5 or 1 mg L-1 vase solution treatment or as a 5 or 10 mg L-1 pulse treatment caused severe phytotoxicity to cut A. holosericea stems. The results suggest that NS treatments, especially neutral NS and acidic NS pulse treatments, could be a potential postharvest technology for commercial application to cut A. holosericea. This paper describes the dielectric behavior of an insulator-conductor composite, namely, the wax-graphite composite. The variation of specific capacitance of these composites with parameters such as volume fraction and grain size of the conducting particles and temperature has been studied. These observed variations have been explained using the same model [C. Rajagopal and M. Satyam, J. Appl. Phys. 49, 5536 (1978)] which explains electrical conduction in composites. The specific capacitance of these materials appears to be governed by the contact capacitance between the conducting particles and the number of contacts each particle has with its neighbors. The variation of specific capacitance with temperature is attributed to the change in contact area.

Structural stability of small sized nonstoichiometric CdS nano clusters between zincblende and wurtzite structures has been investigated using first-principles density functional calculations. Our study shows that the relative stability of these two structures depends sensitively on whether the surface is S-terminated or Cd-terminated. The associated band gap also exhibits non-monotonic behavior as a function of cluster size. Our findings may shed light on contradictory reports of experimentally observed structures of CdS nano clusters found in the literature.

There has been a lot of effort to make Silicon optically active. In this work we examine two methods of generating nanocrystals of Silicon from bulk fragments. This approach of ours allows us to play with the shape of the nanocrystals and therefore the degeneracy of the conduction band minimum. We go on to examine whether similar sized particles with different shapes have the same physical properties, and finally whether Silicon may be rendered optically active by this route. While we do find that similar sized particles with different shapes may have different band gaps, this route of modifying the degeneracy of the conduction band minimum makes nano Si slightly optically active.

Under lubricated conditions, Al-graphite particle composite is a good antiseizure bearing and antifriction material possessing properties which inhibit excessive temperature rise in bearings. The present study characterizes the dry wear properties of the composite. The dry wear characteristics of the Al-(2.7%–5.7% graphite particle) (50–200μm) composite were found to deteriorate with the addition of graphite, load and sliding distance. Both micro structural and microhardness studies of the worn subsurfaces and analysis of wear debris show that the reductions in strength and ductility of the composite due to graphite addition are the most likely causes of deterioration in the wear properties of the composite.
