The objective of this work was to develop and validate a rapid Reversed-Phase High-Performance Liquid Chromatography method for the quantification of 3,5,3 '-triiodothyroacetic acid (TRIAC) in nanoparticles delivery system prepared in different polymeric matrices. Special attention was given to developing a reliable reproductive technique for the pretreatment of the samples. Chromatographic runs were performed on an Agilent 1200 Series HPLC with a RP Phenomenex (R) Gemini C18 (150 x 4, 6 mm i.d., 5 mu m) column using acetonitrile and triethylamine buffer 0.1% (TEA) (40 : 60 v/v) as a mobile phase in an isocratic elution, pH 5.6 at a flow rate of 1 ml min(-1). TRIAC was detected at a wavelength of 220 nm. The injection volume was 20 mu l and the column temperature was maintained at 35 degrees C. The validation characteristics included accuracy, precision, specificity, linearity, recovery, and robustness. The standard curve was found to have a linear relationship (r(2) - 0.9996) over the analytical range of 5-100 mu g ml(-1) . The detection and quantitation limits were 1.3 and 3.8 mu g ml(-1), respectively. The recovery and loaded TRIAC in colloidal system delivery was nearly 100% and 98%, respectively. The method was successfully applied in polycaprolactone, polyhydroxybutyrate, and polymethylmethacrylate nanoparticles.

We present an extensive study of the oxyborate material Co(5)Ti(O(2)BO(3))(2) using x-ray, magnetic, and thermodynamic measurements. This material belongs to a family of oxyborates known as ludwigites which presents low-dimensional subunits in the form of three leg ladders in its structure. Differently from previously investigated ludwigites the present material does not show long-range magnetic order although it goes into a spin-glass state at low temperatures. The different techniques employed in this paper allow for a characterization of the structure, the nature of the low-energy excitations and the magnetic anisotropy of this system. Its unique magnetic behavior is discussed and compared with those of other magnetic ludwigites.

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C(6)H(9)N(2)OS(2)(+)center dot-HSO(4)(-)center dot H(2)O, contains a heterocyclic cation, a hydrogen sulfate anion and a water molecule. There are strong hydrogen bonds between the hydrogen sulfate anions and water molecules, forming an infinite chain along the [010] direction, from which the cations are pendent. The steric, electronic and geometric features are compared with those of similar compounds. In this way, structural relationships are stated in terms of the influence of the sulfate group on the protonation of the heterocycle and on the tautomeric equilibrium in the solid state.

The fast and reversible phase transition mechanism between crystalline and amorphous phases of Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) has been in debate for several years. Through employing first-principles density functional theory calculations, we identify a direct structural link between the metastable crystalline and amorphous phases. The phase transition is driven by the displacement of Ge atoms along the rocksalt [111] direction from stable octahedron to high energy unstable tetrahedron sites close to the intrinsic vacancy regions, which generates a high energy intermediate phase between metastable and amorphous phases. Due to the instability of Ge at the tetrahedron sites, the Ge atoms naturally shift away from those sites, giving rise to the formation of local-ordered fourfold motifs and the long-range structural disorder. Intrinsic vacancies, which originate from Sb(2)Te(3), lower the energy barrier for Ge displacements, and hence, their distribution plays an important role in the phase transition. The high energy intermediate configuration can be obtained experimentally by applying an intense laser beam, which overcomes the thermodynamic barrier from the octahedron to tetrahedron sites. The high figure of merit of Ge(2)Sb(2)Te(5) is achieved from the optimal combination of intrinsic vacancies provided by Sb(2)Te(3) and the instability of the tetrahedron sites provided by GeTe.

Loebl, Komlos, and Sos conjectured that if at least half the vertices of a graph G have degree at least some k is an element of N, then every tree with at most k edges is a subgraph of G. We prove the conjecture for all trees of diameter at most 5 and for a class of caterpillars. Our result implies a bound on the Ramsey number r( T, T') of trees T, T' from the above classes.

The structure analysis of the title compound, C(14)H(16)O(2)S(2), shows the SMe and H atoms of the bond linking the six-membered rings to be syn and also to be syn to the bridgehead -CH(2)- group. Each of the five-membered rings adopts an envelope conformation at the bridgehead -CH(2)- group. The dione-substituted ring adopts a folded conformation about the 1,4-C center dot center dot center dot C vector, with the ketone groups lying to one side. The cyclohexene ring adopts a boat conformation.

The title compound, C(16)H(15)N(3)O(2)S, was synthesized by the reaction of 2-amino-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-4H-cyclohepta[b]thiophene-3-carbonitrile and o-fluoronitrobenzene. The thiophene and nitrophenyl rings and amino and carbonitrile groups are coplanar with a maximum deviation of 0.046 (2) angstrom and a dihedral angle of 0.92 (6)degrees between the rings. The cyclohepta ring adopts a chair conformation. Intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot S interactions occur. In the crystal, the molecules form layers that are linked by pi-pi stacking interactions between the thiophene and benzene rings [centroid-centroid distances = 3.7089 (12) and 3.6170 (12) angstrom].

The present work integrates sedimentary facies, (14)C dating, delta(13)C, delta(15)N, and C/N with geologic and geomorphologic data available from literature. The aim was to characterize the depositional settings of a late Quaternary estuary in northeastern Marajo Island and analyze its evolution within the context of relative sea level fluctuations. The data derive from four continuous cores along a proximal-to-distal transect of a paleoestuary, previously recognized using remote sensing information. Fifteen sediment samples recorded ages ranging from 42,580 +/- 1430 to 3184 +/- 37 (14)C yr B.P. Fades analysis indicated fine- to coarse-grained sands with parallel lamination or cross stratification, massive or laminated muds and heterolithic deposits. delta(13)C (-28.1 parts per thousand to -19.7 parts per thousand, mean = -23.0 parts per thousand), delta(15)N (+ 14.8 parts per thousand to + 4.7 parts per thousand, mean = + 9.2 parts per thousand) and C/N (14.5 to 1.5, mean = 7.9) indicate mostly marine and freshwater phytoplankton sources for the organic matter. The results confirm a large late Quaternary paleoestuary in northeastern Marajo Island. The distribution of delta(13)C, delta(15)N, and C/N, together with fades associations, led to identify depositional settings related to fluvial channel, floodplain, tidal channel/tidal flat, central basin, tidal delta, and tidal inlet/sand barrier. These deposits are consistent with a wave-dominated estuary. Variations in stratigraphy and geochemistry are controlled by changes in relative sea level, revealing a main transgression from an undetermined time around 42,000 (14)C yr B.P. and 29,340 (+/- 200) (14)C yr B.P., which is synchronous to the overall drop in sea level after the last interglacial. Following this period, and probably until 9110 +/- 37 (14)C yr B.P., i.e., during a time interval encompassing two glacial episodes including the Last Glacial and the Younger Dryas, there was a pronounced drop in sea level, recorded by the development of a major erosional discontinuity due to valley re-incision. Sea level rose again until 5464 +/- 40 (14)C yr B.P, just before the main worldwide mid-Holocene transgressive peak. Mid to late Holocene coastal progradation ended the Marajo paleoestuarine history, and promoted the establishment of continental conditions throughout the island. The divergence comparing the Marajo sea level behavior with the eustatic curve allows hypothesizing that post-rifting tectonics along the Brazilian Equatorial margin influenced the sedimentary evolution of the studied paleoestuary. Considering that sedimentary facies in estuarine settings are highly variable both laterally and vertically, the present integration of facies with isotope and elemental analyses was crucial to provide a more precise interpretation of the Late Pleistocene and Holocene Marajo paleoestuary, and analyze its sea level history within the eustatic and tectonic context. Question: How can the coexistence of savanna and forest in Amazonian areas with relatively uniform climates be explained? Location: Eastern Marajo Island, northeast Amazonia, Brazil. Methods: The study integrated floristic analysis, terrain morphology, sedimentology and delta(13)C of soil organic matter. Floristic analysis involved rapid ecological assessment of 33 sites, determination of occurrence, specific richness, hierarchical distribution and matrix of floristic similarity between paired vegetation types. Terrain characterization was based on analysis of Landsat images using 4(R), 5(G) and 7(B) composition and digital elevation model (DEM). Sedimentology involved field descriptions of surface and core sediments. Finally, radiocarbon dating and analysis of delta(13)C of soil profile organic matter and natural ecotone forest-savanna was undertaken. Results: Slight tectonic subsidence in eastern Marajo Island favours seasonal flooding, making it unsuitable for forest growth. However, this area displays slightly convex-up, sinuous morphologies related to paleochannels, covered by forest. Terra-firme lowland forests are expanding from west to east, preferentially occupying paleochannels and replacing savanna. Slack, running water during channel abandonment leads to disappearance of varzea/gallery forest at channel margins. Long-abandoned channels sustain continuous terra-firme forests, because of longer times for more species to establish. Recently abandoned channels have had less time to become sites for widespread tree development, and are either not vegetated or covered by savanna. Conclusion: Landforms in eastern Marajo Island reflect changes in the physical environment due to reactivation of tectonic faults during the latest Quaternary. This promoted a dynamic history of channel abandonment, which controlled a set of interrelated parameters (soil type, topography, hydrology) that determined species location. Inclusion of a geological perspective for paleoenvironmental reconstruction can increase understanding of plant distribution in Amazonia.

Objective: to identify risk factors associated with neonatal transfers from a free-standing birth centre to a hospital. Design: epidemiological case-control study. Setting: midwifery-led free-standing birth centre in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Participants: 96 newborns were selected from 2840 births between September 1998 and August 2005. Cases were defined as all new borns transferred from the birth centre to a hospital (n = 32), and controls were defined as new borns delivered at the same birth centre, during the same time period, and who had not been transferred to a hospital (n = 64). Measurements and findings: data were collected from medical records available at the birth centre. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed using logistic regression. The multivariate analysis included outcomes with p<0.25, specifically: smoking during pregnancy, prenatal care appointments, labour complications, weight in relation to gestational age, and one-minute Apgar score. Of the foregoing outcomes, those that remained in the full regression model as a risk factor associated with neonatal transfer were: smoking during pregnancy [p = 0.009, odds ratio (OR) = 4.1,95% confidence interval (CI) 1.03-16.33], labour complications (p<0.001, OR = 5.5, 95% CI 1.06-28.26) and one-minute Apgar score <= 7 (p<0.001, OR = 7.8,95% CI 1.62-37.03). Key conclusions and implications for practice: smoking during pregnancy, labour complications and one-minute Apgar score <= 7 were confirmed as risk factors for neonatal transfer from the birth centre to a hospital. The identified risk factors can help to improve institutional protocols and formulate hypotheses for other studies. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The consumption of protein supplements containing amino acids is increasing around the world Aspartate (Asp) and asparagine (Asn) are amino acids metabolized by skeletal muscle. This metabolism involves biochemical pathways that are involved in increasing Krebs cycle activity via anaplerotic reactions. resulting in higher glutamine concentrations. A connection between amino acid supplementation, glycogen concentration, and glucose uptake has been previously demonstrated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of asp and Asn Supplementation on glucose uptake in rats using three different glycogen concentrations The results indicate that Asp and Asn supplementation in rats with high glycogen concentrations (fed state) further increased the glycogen concentration in the muscle, and decreased in vitro 2-deoxyglucose (a glucose analog.) uptake by the muscle at maximal insulin concentrations When animals had a medium glycogen concentration (consumed lard for 3 days). glucose uptake was higher in the supplemented group at sub-maximal insulin concentrations. We conclude that supplementation of Asp and Asn reduced glucose transport in rat muscle only at higher levels of glycogen. The ingestion of lard for 3 days changed the responsiveness and sensitivity to insulin, and that group had higher levels of insulin sensivity with Asp and Asn supplementation. Since the beginning of Physical Education entrance in the brazilin public schools, the game has been frequently used as content, and in the course of time that practice seems to be intensified. In spite of many approaches of different purposes to justify its pedagogic usefulness, the game has been used as an indiscriminate way due to the fascination that it provides to the students. The present study searches for a description and analysis of children`s (10-12 years old) attitudes behaviors in games, on Physical Education classes, inside a public school. The study was accomplished with the researcher also attending as a teacher (action research). For the accomplishment of the study 55 children were filmed in four different games, of different kinds (exposed, transformed, and spontaneous). The classes` description and analysis were focused in the attitude axis and it was defined four topics for the discussion: Conflicts, Respect of rules, Expressiveness, and Competitiveness. The relationship between the individual with the game and its culture were pointed as the main characteristics in the configuration of the ludicrous activity atmosphere. It was also possible to observe specific situations of this relationship, once the games were limited to the social games (Piaget category), in a school atmosphere where children have students roles. Due to the obtained results, the study proposes a reflexive practice in which the students notice their own attitudes and try to adapt the game to their needs and not he other way around. In this perspective, the teacher has an important mediator roll, once he will be responsible to point out the students` difficulties and promote discussions in favor to provide teamwork.

In the Mo-Si binary system. Mo(5)Si(3) crystallizes in the W(5)Si(3) (T(1) phase) structure type. However, when boron replaces silicon in this compound, a structural transition occurs from the W(5)Si(3) prototype structure to the Cr(5)B(3) prototype structure (T(2) phase) at the composition Mo(5)SiB(2). Mo(5)SiB(2) has received much attention in the literature as a candidate for structural application in high-temperature turbines, but its electronic and magnetic behavior has not been explored. In this work, we show that Mo(5)SiB(2) is a bulk superconducting material with critical temperature close to 5.8 K. The specific-heat, resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that this material is a conventional type II BCS superconductor. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
