EHT calculations on heterotrinuclear cobalt(III) complexes of the type [Cu{(OH)(2)Co(L(4))}(2)](4+) where L(4) denotes (en)(2) or (NH3)(4), en = ethylenediamine and their component species have been carried out. The results regarding bonding and structure for the trinuclear complexes are compared with those for the monomer components such as [Co(en)(2)(OH)(2)](+), [Co(NH3)(4)(OH)(2)](+) and [Cu(OH)(4)](2-) are discussed.

Mass spectrometric studies show that contact-arc vaporization of graphite in a partial atmosphere of N2 or NH3 yields nitrogenous products tentatively assigned to species such as C70N2, C59N6, C59N4 and C59N2 involving addition of or substitution by nitrogen along with the species due to C2 and C4 losses. Mass spectrometry and other techniques have been employed to identify products of the nucleophilic addition of aliphatic amines to C60 and C70 in solution phase.

This paper contains a review of the physical properties of the undoped and alkali-doped C60 materials, including their crystal structure, electronic, optical and vibrational properties and the effect of pressure on the crystal and electronic structure. The mechanisms of superconductivity in alkali-doped C60 in terms of phonon mediated electron pairing vis-a-vis electronic interaction effects are discussed.

Preparation and characterization of the fullerenes, C60 and C70, are described in detail, including the design of the generators fabricated locally. The characterization techniques employed are UV-visible, IR, Raman and C-13 NMR spectroscopies, scanning as well as transmission electron microscopy and mass spectrometry. The electron energy level diagram of C60 as well as the one-electron reductions of C60 and C70 leading to various anions are discussed. Electronic absorption spectra of C60- and C60(2-) are reported. Phase transitions from the plastic to the crystalline states of C60 and C70 are examined. Based on a C-13 NMR study in a mixture of nematic liquid crystals, it has been demonstrated that C60 retains its extraordinary symmetry in solution phase as well. Interaction of C60 and C70 with strong electron-donor molecules has been investigated employing cyclic voltammetry. Superconductivity of K(x)C60 has been studied by non-resonant microwave absorption; Na(x)C60 as well as K(c)C70 are shown to be non-superconducting. Doping C60 with iodine does not make it superconducting. Interaction of C60 with SbCl5 and liquid Br2 gives rise to halogenated products.

Electrochemical precipitation of cobalt(II) hydroxide from nitrate solutions containing organic molecules, such as glucose, fructose, lactose, glycerol, and citric acid, yields a new modification of cobalt (II) hydroxide (a = 3.09 +/- 0.03 Angstrom, c = 23.34 +/- 0.36 Angstrom) that is isostructural with cu-nickel hydroxide; precipitation in the absence of organic additives gives the stable, brucite-like, beta-CO (OH)(2). A simple technique is devised to measure the angles of 90-, 45-, 45-deg and 60-, 30-, 90-deg prisms without using expensive spectrometers, autocollimators, and angle gauges. The method can be extended to unpolished and opaque prisms made of materials other then glass. (C) 1997 Society of Photo-Optical instrumentation Engineers.

The synthesis and thermal analysis studies of several hydroxobridged homo and hetero trinuclear cobalt(III) complexes are reported. The complexes are of the type [M(H2O)(x) {(OH)(2)Co(en)(2)}(2)](SO4)(2). nH(2)O and [M(H2O)(x){(OH)(2)Co(NH3)(4)}(2)] (SO4)(2). nH(2)O where en denotes ethylenediamine and M =Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) with x=0 for Cu(II), and 2 for other metal ions, and n =3, 4 or 5. The TG and DTA studies of these compounds show that one or more intermediate compounds are formed in each case before the metal oxides are produced.

Aqueous solutions of acetates and nitrates of zinc and cobalt have been spray decomposed to study the production of extended solid solutions in the ZnO-CoO system. Examination of the products of a variety of synthesis conditions indicates that up to 70% CoO may be retained in the solid solution in the wurzite phase, even though a comparison of the equilibrium solubility in the phase diagram might be expected to favor the formation of a rock-salt-based solid solution.

We have investigated the microstructure of thin films grown by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition using a beta-diketonate complex of cobalt, namely cobalt (11) acetylacetonate. Films were deposited on three different substrates: Si(100), thermally oxidised silicon [SiO2/Si(100)] and glass at the same time. As-grown films were characterised by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy, atomic force microscopy and secondary ion mass spectrometry. Electrical resistivity was measured for all the films as a function of temperature. We found that films have very fine grains, resulting in high electrical resistivity Further, film microstructure has a strong dependence on the nature of the substrate and there is diffusion of silicon and oxygen into cobalt from the substrate. Thin films of cobalt oxide have been deposited on various substrates, such as glass, Si(100), SrTiO3(100), and LaAlO3(100), by low pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) using cobalt(IL), acetylacetonate as the precursor. Films obtained in the temperature range 400-600 degreesC were uniform and highly crystalline having Co3O4 phase as revealed by x-ray diffraction. Under similar conditions of growth, highly oriented thin films of cobalt oxide grow on SrTiO3(100) and LaAlO3(100). The microstructure and the surface morphology of cobalt oxide films on glass, Si(100) and single crystalline substrates, SrTiO3(100) and LaAlO3(100) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. Optical properties of the films were studied by uv-visible-near IR spectrophotometry.

A cobalt oxalato-squarate of the formula [Co-2(C4O4)(C2O4)(C3N2H4)(2)], containing a ligated amine has been synthesized hydrothermally and its structure determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2 with a = 18.3845(8) Angstrom, b = 5.7884(3) Angstrom, c = 7.2598(4) Angstrom, V = 772.56(7)Angstrom(3) and Z = 4. It has a layered structure where two-dimensional sheets are formed by the connectivity of the squarate and the oxalate units with the cobalt centres, with the ligating amine molecules protruding out from the layers. The I-V characteristics of bulk As40Te60-xSex and As35Te65-xSex glasses have been studied with a current sweep of 0-18 mA-0, over a wide range of compositions (4 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 22). All the glasses studied showed a threshold electrical switching behaviour. The number of switching cycles withstood by the samples has been found to depend on the ON-state current. It is seen that the switching voltages increase with increase in selenium content. Further, the switching voltages are found to be almost independent of the thickness of the sample (d), in the range 0.18-0.3 mm. Also, the switching voltages and the number of switching cycles withstood by the samples are found to decrease with temperature.

Cobalt (11) phthalocyanine (CoPc) molecules have been encapsulated within the supercage of zeolite-Y. The square-planar complex, being larger than the almost spherical cage, is forced to adopt a distorted geometry on encapsulation. A comparative spectroscopic and magnetic investigation of CoPc encapsulated in zeolite-Y and in the unencapsulated state is reported. These results supported by molecular modeling have been used to understand the nature and extent of the loss of planarity of CoPc on encapsulation. The encapsulated molecule is shown to be the trans-diprotonated species in which the center of inversion is lost due to distortions required to accommodate the square complex within the zeolite. Encapsulation also leads to an enhancement of the magnetic moment of the CoPc. This is shown to be a consequence of the nonplanar geometry of the encapsulated molecule resulting in an excited high-spin state being thermally accessible.
