In this work, vitreous samples were prepared in the binary system (100 - x)NaPO3-xMO(3) with M = Mo and W and x varying from 10 to 60. The transmittance properties in the UV, visible, and near-infrared were monitored as a function of MO3 concentration. In both cases, an increase in the amount of transition metal results in an intense and broad absorption band in the visible and near-infrared attributed to metal reduction under synthesis conditions. It was shown that this large absorption can be partially or totally removed using specific oxidizing agents or by improving synthesis parameters such as melting temperature or cooling rate of the melt. In addition, structural investigations by Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopy suggest that reduction only occurs when the metal cation is in octahedral geometry and that the transmittance improvement is not related with any structural changes. These results were explained in terms of thermodynamic equilibrium of redox species in the melt and allowed to obtain for the first time transparent and chemically stable glasses containing high concentrations of MO3 with transition metals in octahedral geometry inside the glass network.

(1-x)PbF2-(x)CdF2 solid solutions (with 0.1 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.5) were obtained by hyper-quenching the melt. Structural characteristics have been studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). A cubic solid solution was obtained in which the lattice parameter decreases with increasing CdF2 content. High anionic disorder was evidenced from EXAFS investigations, whereas cations remain in the FCC arrangement. Pb L-3-edge EXAFS results illustrate clearly the occurrence of CdxPb1-xF2 mixed crystals by the introduction of Cd atoms in the second Pb coordination shell. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. The crystallization process of lead titanate (PT) prepared using the polymeric precursor method was investigated using X-ray diffractometry, Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy techniques. The results showed that amorphous PT was formed by an O-Ti-O structure composed of fivefold and sixfold oxygen-coordinated titanium. The local structure of the amorphous PT phase was similar to that of the cubic PT phase, i.e., similar coordination number and similar bond lengths, leading to a topotactic-like transformation during the phase transformation from amorphous to cubic perovskite PT. Because of the low crystallization temperature, every transformation observed during the crystallization process was associated with a short-range rearrangement process.

Siloxane-polypropyleneoxide (PPO) hybrids doped with sodium perchlorate (NaClO4) obtained by the sol-gel process were prepared with two PPO molecular weights (2000 and 4000 g/mol) and two sodium concentrations such as [O]/[Na] = 4 and 15 (O being the ether-type oxygen of PPO chains). The structure of these hybrids was investigated by Na-23 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the sodium K-edge (1071.8 eV) whereas complex impedance spectroscopy was used to determine their ionic conductivity. Three sodium sites were determined by NMR. The conjunction of NMR and X-ray absorption results allows us to identify one site in which Na is in a NaCl structure, a second one in which Na is in contact with perchlorate anions. The third site is attributed to mobile sodium species in interaction with the polymeric chain. The relative proportion of the different sites in the materials determines the ionic conductivity of the materials at room temperature: the largest ionic conductivity is 8.9 x 10(-6) Omega(-1) cm(-1) and is observed on the material with the larger amount (at least 85%) of sites in which sodium interacts with the polymer. The structural organization of Sb2O3-SbPO4 glasses has been studied by FTIR, Raman, P-31 MAS and spin echo NMR, Mossbauer and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES at K and L-3,L-1-Sb edges). The combined results can be explained in terms of two potential mechanisms describing the change of the Sb(m) local environment upon incorporation of Q((4))-type phosphate. The formation of the latter species requires anionic compensation that may be adjusted by (a) formation of non bridging oxygen or (b) formation of SbO4E- groups (E = non-bonding electron pair). The second model is favored.

The structure and the ionic conduction properties of siloxane-poly(oxypropylene) (PPO) hybrids doped with different potassium salts (KCF3SO3, KI, KClO4 and KNO2) are reported for two polymer molecular weights (300 and 4000 g/mol), labelled PPO300 and PPO4000, respectively. The doping concentration, related to the concentration of the ether type oxygen of the PPO chain, is the same whatever the salt and verifies [O]/[K] = 20. Ionic room temperature conductivity shows the highest value for the KCF3SO3 doped PPO4000 hybrid (4 x 10(-7)Omega(-1).cm(-1)). The structure of these hybrids was investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS and XANES) at the potassium K-edge (3607 eV). XRPD results show that the hybrid matrix is always amorphous and the formation of secondary potassium phases is observed for all the samples, except for the KCF3SO3 doped PPO4000 hybrid. EXAFS results evidence a good correlation between the ionic conductivity and the presence of oxygen atoms as first neighbours around potassium.

Binary tellurite-based glasses in the TeO2-PbO system were prepared and its structure investigated by means of Raman Scattering and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy. Both spectroscopies indicate strong modifications of the first coordination shell around tellurium atoms when the PbO content increases revealing for lead its glassy network modifier role. Also, Pb L-3-edge EXAFS measurements reveal this structural role played by lead atoms, but the presence of a medium range order contribution indicates that lead also participates to the glassy network formation. The present paper focuses on the structural, electronic, and compositional properties of Ge25Ga10S65 glasses before and after UV illumination in air using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) techniques. The XPS Ge 3d spectra reveal the existence of Ge-O bonds in the surface region of illuminated glass. In the case of this sample, XAS O K-edge spectra showed the formation of an enriched region of oxygen atoms in the glass bulk, indicating a different bonding structure of oxygen at the surface and in the bulk of the glass. Moreover, the structural changes that occur after UV illumination in the glass sample are identified as the formation of a homogeneous germanium oxide surface layer followed by an intermediary Ge25Ga10S65-yOz subsurface region. Lead-Cadmium fluorosilicate stable glasses were prepared and the vitreous domain region determined in the composition diagram. Characteristic temperatures were obtained from thermal analysis and the structural studies performed illustrate clearly the role played by lead atoms in the glasses crystallization behavior and the glass-forming ability of cadmium atoms. The occurrence of either a cubic lead fluoride or a lead-cadmium fluoride solid solution in crystallizing samples was found to be dependent on Er3+ doping. The optically active ions were found to concentrate in the crystalline phase and in fact play the role of nucleating agent as suggested from X-ray diffraction and EXAFS measurements. Siloxane-poly(oxyethylene) hybrids obtained by the sol-gel process and containing short polymer chain have been doped with potassium triflate (KCF3SO3). The local structure of these hybrids was investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy near the potassium K-edge. Small angle X-ray scattering was used to determine the structure at the nanometer scale. Results revealed that at low and medium potassium concentration (n = [O][K] >= 8, where n represents the molar ratio of ether-type oxygen atoms per alkaline cation) the cations interact mainly with the polymer chains, while at larger doping level (n < 8) the formation of a polyehter:KCF3SO3 Complex is observed. The nanoscopic structure of the hybrids is also affected by doping. By increasing the doping level, decreasing trends in the electronic density contrast between siloxane nanoparticles and polyether matrix and in the siloxane interparticle distance are observed. At high doping level the small angle X-ray scattering patterns are strongly modified, showing the disappearance of the correlation peak and the formation of a potassium-containing nanophase. We compare the effect of organic (Tiron (R)) and inorganic (Mn(11)) additives on the low temperature (< 600 degrees C) densification of the sol-gel dip-coated SnO2 films. The structural and compositional properties of the samples were investigated by X-ray reflectometry (XRR), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results suggest that the replacement of hydroxyl groups at the particle surface by Tiron (R) reduces the level of agglomeration of the sol, increasing the particles packing and the apparent density of the coatings. Undoped and Mn-doped films drawn from a Tiron (R) containing suspension show after firing at 500 degrees C a porosity reduction of 12 and 8.6%, respectively. The porosity decrease is less pronounced (4.3%) for the film without additives. Both XAS and XPS data show the presence of trivalent manganese. The formation of a non-homogeneous solid solution characterised by the presence of Mn(111) replacing tin atom near to the crystallite surface was evidenced by XAS. Additionally, XPS results reveal the presence of metallic Sn at the surface of films containing Tirono. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
