Access to international capital markets: recent developments in Central America and the Caribbean

The objective of this report is to analyze the impact of recent global financial trends on the access to private external financing by Central American and Caribbean (CAC) economies, as well as their performance in international capital markets in recent years. The CAC economies, like many other countries in the world, were not immune to the negative consequences of the global economic and financial crisis of 2008. In fact, their openness, export driven growth and linkages to advanced economies, particularly to the U.S., as well as size, made them more vulnerable than other Latin American countries to the negative effects of the crisis. In addition, their recovery was hindered by their weak linkages to the larger emerging market countries that drove global growth in the post-crisis recovery. As China and other emerging market economies begin to slowdown, however, and the U.S. and other advanced economies show signs of a strengthening recovery, the linkages to advanced economies may once again become a source of strength.

The decade for women in Latin America and the Caribbean: background and prospects

This book is being published in response to ECLAC's concern with problems relating to the status of women. Although the three studies it contains were prepared for different governmental forums in the second half of the Decade for Women, their contents certainly transcend the needs for which they were prepared and constitute a contribution which will interest anyone concerned with this question. There are also two annexes, the first of which provides information on United Nations legislation in connection with the rights of women and its application in domestic law, while the second contains resolutions from recent regional meetings sponsored by the United Nations on the subject of women.

Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean. Annual report 2013-2014. Confronting violence against women in Latin America and the Caribbean

The efforts States in our region have made to eradicate violence against women have seen substantial headway on a number of fronts over the past 20 years. This calls for a look at how individual governments have responded and the wide variety of strategies followed. In this report, the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) follows up on the Gender Equality Observatory for Latin America and the Caribbean commitment to analyse violence against women. It has been drafted by the Observatory’s participating agencies and organizations: the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-Women); the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the Ibero-American Secretariat (SEGIB) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID). The focus is on the situation across the region, progress in meeting international recommendations, national public policies, and constraints and challenges.

The Economics of Climate Change in Central America: Summary 2012

This report was published with the goal of discussing, disseminating and using the results of this initiative in the formulation of national and regional strategies and have been presented at national and regional events with civil servants, representatives of non-governmental organizations, trade unions, the private sector, universities and research centers. The results have served as inputs in the training of national committees on climate change and negotiating teams, as well as in the preparation of the Regional Climate Change Strategy, several international financing projects and various national policies. The results have been presented in coordination with the Ministries of Environment at the last three Conferences of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
