Chlorophyll "a" and adenozine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations together with size structure of microplankton were investigated in January-April 1989 in the Indian Ocean and in the Weddell Sea. ATP values varied from 11 to 92 ng/l, and chlorophyll "a" concentrations varied from 0.04 to 0.27 µg/l in the Indian Ocean, with prevailing nanoplankton and picoplankton fractions. Both ATP and chlorophyll "a" concentrations increased 2 times to the south of 40°S; in the Weddell Sea they exceeded 400 ng/l and 0.6 µg/l, respectively. Cells of nanophytoplankton and microphytoplankton (mainly diatoms) prevailed in size spectra. Spatial variabilities of the parameters were within one order of magnitude; their values decreased 3-4 times during 1 month. Size structure changed due to increased portion of nanoplankton and picolankton. ATP concentrations in the photic layer (0-200 m) varied from 31.96 mg/m**2 in February to 8.02 mg/m**2 in March to April. ATP concentrations were 61.5 and 98.8 mg/m**2 at depths of 4200 and 4700 m, respectively.

The dynamic of early spring nanoprotozoa was investigated in three characteristic water masses of the Southern Ocean: the Marginal Ice Zone, the intermediate waters of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current and the Polar Frontal Zone. Biomass and feeding activities of nanoprotozoa were measured, as well as the biomass of their potential prey-bacteria and phototrophic flagellates-on the 6°W meridian in the Southern Ocean along three repetitive transects between 47 and 60° South from October to November 1992. On average, nanoprotozooplankton biomass accounted for 77% of the combined biomass of bacteria and phototrophic flagellates, and was dominated by dinoflagellates and flagellates smaller than 5 µm. As a general trend, low protozoan biomass of 2 mg C/m**3 was typical of the ice covered area, while significantly higher biomasses culminating at 15 mg C/m**3 were recorded at the Polar Front. Biomasses of bacteria and total phytoplankton were distributed accordingly, with larger values at the Polar Front. Phototrophic flagellates did not show any geographical trend. No seasonal trend could be identified in the Marginal Ice Zone and in the intermediate waters of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current. On the other hand, at the Polar Front region a three-fold increase was observed within a 2-month period for nanoprotozooplankton biomass. Such a biomass increase was also detected for bacterioplankton and total phytoplankton biomass. Half-saturation constants and maximum specific ingestion of nanoprotozoan taxons feeding on bacteria and phototrophic flagellates were determined using the technique of fluorescent labelled bacteria (FLB) and algae (FLA) over a large range of prey concentrations. Maximum ingestion rates ranged between 0.002 and 0.015/h for bactivorous nanoprotozoa and heterotrophic flagellates larger than 5 µm feeding on phototrophic flagellates. The markedly high maximum ingestion rates of 0.4/h characterising nanophytoplankton ingestion by dinoflagellates evidenced the strong ability of dinoflagellates for feeding on nanophytoplankton. Daily ingestion rates were calculated from nanoprotozoan grazing parameters and carbon biomass of prey and predators. This indicated that nanoprotozoa ingestion of daily bacterioplankton and phytoplankton production in early spring ranged from 32 to 40%.

The study examines the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) for the mining sector using weekly stock returns from 27 companies traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) for the period of December 2008 to December 2010. The results support the use of the CAPM for the allocation of risk to companies. Most companies involved in precious metals (particularly gold), which have a beta value less than unity (Table 1), have been actuated as shelter values during the financial crisis. Values of R2 do not shown very explanatory power of fitted models (R2 < 70 %). Estimated coefficients beta are not sufficient to determine the expected returns on securities but the results of the tests conducted on sample data for the period analysed do not appear to clearly reject the CAPM

ABSTRACT The energy sector particularly in Spain, and in a similar way in Europe, has a significant overcapacity due to the big growth of the renewable energies in the last ten years, and it is seriously affected by the demand decrease due to the economic crisis. That situation has forced the thermal plants and in particular, the combined cycles to operate with extremely low annual average capacity factors, very close to 10%. Apart from the incomes reduction, working in out-of-design conditions, means getting a worse performance and higher costs than expected. In this scenario, anything that can be done to improve the efficiency and the equipment condition is positively received. Asset Management, as a multidisciplinary and integrated process, is gaining prominence, reflected in the recent publication of the ISO 55000 series in 2014. Dealing Asset Management as a global, integrated process needs to manage several processes and significant volumes of information, also in real time, that requires information technologies and software applications to support it. This thesis proposes an integrated asset management concept (Integrated Plant Management-IPM) applied to combined cycle power plants and develops a methodology to assess the benefit that it can provide. Due to the difficulties in getting deterministic benefit estimation, a statistical approach has been adopted for the cot-benefit analysis. As well, the quantitative analysis has been completed with a qualitative validation of the technologies included in the IPM and their contribution to key power plant challenges by power generation sector experts. The cost- benefit analysis provides positive results even in the negative scenario of annual average capacity factor close to 10% and is promising for capacity factors over 30%.

The Denver metropolitan area is facing rapid population growth that increases the stress on already limited resources. Research and advanced computer modeling show that trees, especially those in urban areas, have significant environmental benefits. These benefits include air quality improvements, energy savings, greenhouse gas reduction, and possible water conservation. This Capstone Project applies statistical methods to analyze a small data set of residential homes and their energy and water consumption, as a function of their individual landscape. Results indicate that tree shade can influence water conservation, and that irrigation methods can be an influential factor as well. The Capstone is a preliminary analysis for future study to be performed by the Institute for Environmental Solutions in 2007.

Two cores, Site 1089 (ODP Leg 177) and PS2821-1, recovered from the same location (40°56'S; 9°54'E) at the Subtropical Front (STF) in the Atlantic Sector of the Southern Ocean, provide a high-resolution climatic record, with an average temporal resolution of less than 600 yr. A multi-proxy approach was used to produce an age model for Core PS2821-1, and to correlate the two cores. Both cores document the last climatic cycle, from Marine Isotopic Stage 6 (MIS 6, ca. 160 kyr BP, ka) to present. Summer sea-surface temperatures (SSSTs) have been estimated, with a standard error of ca. +/-1.16°C, for the down core record by using Q-mode factor analysis (Imbrie and Kipp method). The paleotemperatures show a 7°C warming at Termination II (last interglacial, transition from MIS 6 to MIS 5). This transition from glacial to interglacial paleotemperatures (with maximum temperatures ca. 3°C warmer than present at the core location) occurs earlier than the corresponding shift in delta18O values for benthic foraminifera from the same core; this suggests a lead of Southern Ocean paleotemperature changes compared to the global ice-volume changes, as indicated by the benthic isotopic record. The climatic evolution of the record continues with a progressive temperature deterioration towards MIS 2. High-frequency, millennial-scale climatic instability has been documented for MIS 3 and part of MIS 4, with sudden temperature variations of almost the same magnitude as those observed at the transitions between glacial and interglacial times. These changes occur during the same time interval as the Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles recognized in the delta18Oice record of the GRIP and GISP ice cores from Greenland, and seem to be connected to rapid changes in the STF position in relation to the core location. Sudden cooling episodes ('Younger Dryas (YD)-type' and 'Antarctic Cold Reversal (ACR)-type' of events) have been recognized for both Termination I (ACR-I and YD-I events) and II (ACR-II and YD-II events), and imply that our core is located in an optimal position in order to record events triggered by phenomena occurring in both hemispheres. Spectral analysis of our SSST record displays strong analogies, particularly for high, sub-orbital frequencies, to equivalent records from Vostok (Antarctica) and from the Subtropical North Atlantic ocean. This implies that the climatic variability of widely separated areas (the Antarctic continent, the Subtropical North Atlantic, and the Subantarctic South Atlantic) can be strongly coupled and co-varying at millennial time scales (a few to 10-ka periods), and eventually induced by the same triggering mechanisms. Climatic variability has also been documented for supposedly warm and stable interglacial intervals (MIS 1 and 5), with several cold events which can be correlated to other Southern Ocean and North Atlantic sediment records.

In spite of the important role played by the Southern Ocean in global climate, the few existing paleoceanographic records in the east Pacific sector do not extend beyond one glacial-interglacial cycle, hindering circumpolar comparison of past sea surface temperature (SST) evolution in the Southern Ocean. Here we present three alkenone-based Pleistocene SST records from the subantarctic and subtropical Pacific. We use a regional core top calibration data set to constrain the choice of calibrations for paleo SST estimation. Our core top data confirm that the alkenone-based UK37 and UK'37 values correlate linearly with the SST, in a similar fashion as the most commonly used laboratory culture-based calibrations even at low temperatures (down to ~1°C), rendering these calibrations appropriate for application in the subantarctic Pacific. However, these alkenone indices yield diverging temporal trends in the Pleistocene SST records. On the basis of the better agreement with d18O records and other SST records in the subantarctic Southern Ocean, we propose that the UK37 is a better index for SST reconstruction in this region than the more commonly used UK'37 index. The UK37-derived SST records suggest glacial cooling of ~8°C and ~4°C in the subantarctic and subtropical Pacific, respectively. Such extent of subantarctic glacial cooling is comparable to that in other sectors of the Southern Ocean, indicating a uniform circumpolar cooling during the Pleistocene. Furthermore, our SST records also imply massive equatorward migrations of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) frontal systems and an enhanced transport of ACC water to lower latitudes during glacials by the Peru-Chile Current.
