As lapas do género Patella são moluscos gastrópodes em crescente utilização na alimentação humana, sendo um petisco muito apreciado em várias regiões costeiras de Portugal. De acordo com a fileira do pescado, o consumo de produtos da pesca ricos em ácidos gordos polinsaturados têm vindo a substituir os produtos de origem animal terrestre através dos produtos filetados, reestruturados e pré-cozinhados. A oxidação dos alimentos é a causa mais importante na deterioração da qualidade nutricional e sensorial dos produtos da pesca. Assim nos últimos anos, tem-se verificado um interesse crescente na utilização de antioxidantes naturais de origem vegetal (frutas e vegetais) em detrimento de antioxidantes sintéticos, aquando da elaboração de produtos reestruturados de origem animal (hambúrgueres, salsichas e patés). Para além deste efeito antioxidante, existe uma relação benéfica entre o consumo de frutas e vegetais, ricos em compostos fenólicos e a prevenção de certas doenças. Este trabalho pretende produzir e caracterizar ao nível físico-químico, sensorial e microbiológico um paté elaborado a partir de lapas, com adição do fruto silvestre medronho, bem como a valorização destas matérias-primas ao proporcionar uma mais-valia nutricional/funcional e económica com o desenvolvimento de um produto inovador (paté). Por outro lado, avaliou-se a estabilidade oxidativa do paté em armazenamento refrigerado durante 90 dias bem como a aceitabilidade do mesmo. Sendo assim, produziram-se três tipos de patés inovadores: i) paté de lapa com BHT (PCON), ii) paté de lapa com 3% de medronho (PAU3) e iii) paté de lapa com 6% de medronho (PAU6). Os resultados da avaliação da estabilidade oxidativa (PAU6>PAU3>PCON) confirmam a elevada capacidade do extrato de medronho rico em compostos fenólicos como inibidor eficaz na oxidação lipídica do paté de lapa e com boa aceitação sensorial.

Pop-up archival tags (PAT) provide summary and high-resolution time series data at predefined temporal intervals. The limited battery capabilities of PATs often restrict the transmission success and thus temporal coverage of both data products. While summary data are usually less affected by this problem, as a result of its lower size, it might be less informative. We here investigate the accuracy and feasibility of using temperature at depth summary data provided by PATs to describe encountered oceanographic conditions. Interpolated temperature at depth summary data was found to provide accurate estimates of three major thermal water column structure indicators: thermocline depth, stratification and ocean heat content. Such indicators are useful for the interpretation of the tagged animal's horizontal and vertical behaviour. The accuracy of these indicators was found to be particularly sensitive to the number of data points available in the first 100 m, which in turn depends on the vertical behaviour of the tagged animal. Based on our results, we recommend the use of temperature at depth summary data as opposed to temperature time series data for PAT studies; doing so during the tag programming will help to maximize the amount of transmitted time series data for other key data types such as light levels and depth.

Resumo: OBJETIVO: Avaliar os aspectos dietéticos das refeições oferecidas por empresas inscritas no Programa de Alimentação do Trabalhador (PAT) na Cidade de São Paulo, Brasil, em relação às recomendações nutricionais do Guia Alimentar para a População Brasileira do Ministério da Saúde. MÉTODOS:Foram investigadas 72 empresas, caracterizadas conforme setor (indústria, serviços ou comércio), porte (micro, pequenas, médias ou grandes), modalidade do PAT (autogestão, gestão terceirizada do tipo refeição transportada ou gestão terceirizada do tipo preparo e distribuição de refeição na empresa) e supervisão de nutricionista (sim ou não). A quantidade per capita dos alimentos foi determinada nos cardápios de 3 dias de almoço, jantar e ceia. O valor nutricional das refeições foi definido com base nas variáveis energia, carboidrato, proteína, gorduras totais, gordura poliinsaturada, gordura saturada, gordura trans, açúcares livres, colesterol e frutas e hortaliças. RESULTADOS:A maioria dos cardápios teve baixa oferta de frutas e hortaliças (63,9%) e gordura poliinsaturada (83,3%) e excesso de gorduras totais (47,2%) e colesterol (62,5%). O agrupamento 2, composto principalmente por empresas de médio e grande porte do setor industrial e de serviços, com gestão terceirizada e supervisão de nutricionista, teve, em média, refeições com maior valor energético (P < 0,001), maior porcentagem de gorduras poliinsaturadas (P < 0,001), maior quantidade de colesterol (P = 0,015) e maior quantidade de frutas e hortaliças (P < 0,001) do que o agrupamento 1, composto por micro e pequenas empresas do setor de comércio, tendo autogestão como modalidade e sem supervisão de nutricionista. Quanto à adequação dos cardápios oferecidos às metas do Guia Alimentar para a População Brasileira, as refeições do agrupamento 2 foram mais adequadas em relação à oferta de frutas e hortaliças (P < 0,001). ) Em contrapartida, o agrupamento 1 apresentou maior adequação da quantidade de colesterol (P = 0,05). CONCLUSÕES: É necessária uma ação mais direcionada aos gestores de empresas e aos responsáveis pelas unidades de alimentação e nutrição, principalmente no grupo de empresas que não tem a supervisão de nutricionista

The dynamical discrete web (DyDW), introduced in the recent work of Howitt and Warren, is a system of coalescing simple symmetric one-dimensional random walks which evolve in an extra continuous dynamical time parameter tau. The evolution is by independent updating of the underlying Bernoulli variables indexed by discrete space-time that define the discrete web at any fixed tau. In this paper, we study the existence of exceptional (random) values of tau where the paths of the web do not behave like usual random walks and the Hausdorff dimension of the set of such exceptional tau. Our results are motivated by those about exceptional times for dynamical percolation in high dimension by Haggstrom, Peres and Steif, and in dimension two by Schramm and Steif. The exceptional behavior of the walks in the DyDW is rather different from the situation for the dynamical random walks of Benjamini, Haggstrom, Peres and Steif. For example, we prove that the walk from the origin S(0)(tau) violates the law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) on a set of tau of Hausdorff dimension one. We also discuss how these and other results should extend to the dynamical Brownian web, the natural scaling limit of the DyDW. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The impact of large food falls and carrion on meiobenthic communities remains little understood. The objective of the present study was to investigate whether the carcass of a stingray, encountered fortuitously in an Australian estuary, affects the underlying meiobenthic community, in particular nematode assemblages. The integrity of the skeleton and the low redox values observed under the carcass suggest that the cadaver had been slowly and chiefly decomposed by microbes. The abundance and number of meiofaunal taxa, as well as nematode abundance and nematode-species richness, were significantly lower under the carcass when compared to samples outside the carcass. Nonetheless, a few nematode species, typical of hypoxic/anoxic sediments, were more abundant under the carcass. Interestingly, all these species were absent or rare in samples near, but not under, the carcass, suggesting that they may take advantage of the reduced environment created by the carcass and the consequent lack of competition to prosper. As observed for other marine environments, carcasses in estuaries create a microhabitat that supports a characteristic meiobenthic fauna, distinct from those inhabiting the surrounding sediments, but similar to those of reduced habitats.

Seagrass beds have higher biomass, abundance, diversity and productivity of benthic organisms than unvegetated sediments. However, to date most studies have analysed only the macrofaunal component and ignored the abundant meiofauna present in seagrass meadows. This study was designed to test if meiobenthic communities, especially the free-living nematodes, differed between seagrass beds and unvegetated sediments. Sediment samples from beds of the eelgrass Zostera capricorni and nearby unvegetated sediments were collected in three estuaries along the coast of New South Wales, Australia. Results showed that sediments below the seagrass were finer, with a higher content of organic material and were less oxygenated than sediments without seagrass. Univariate measures of the fauna (i.e. abundance, diversity and taxa richness of total meiofauna and nematode assemblages) did not differ between vegetated and unvegetated sediments. However multivariate analysis of meiofaunal higher taxa showed significant differences between the two habitats, largely due to the presence and absence of certain taxa. Amphipods, tanaidacea, ostracods, hydrozoans and isopods occurred mainly in unvegetated sediments, while kinorhyncs, polychaetes, gastrotrichs and turbellarians were more abundant in vegetated sediments. Regarding the nematode assemblages, 32.4% of the species were restricted to Z. capricorni and 25% only occurred in unvegetated sediments, this suggests that each habitat is characterized by a particular suite of species. Epistrate feeding nematodes were more abundant in seagrass beds, and it is suggested that they graze on the microphytobenthos which accumulates underneath the seagrass. Most of the genera that characterized these estuarine unvegetated sediments are also commonly found on exposed sandy beaches. This may be explained by the fact that Australian estuaries have very little input of freshwater and experience marine conditions for most of the year. This study demonstrates that the seagrass and unvegetated sediments have discrete meiofaunal communities, with little overlap in species composition. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

No-till (NT) adoption is an essential tool for development of sustainable agricultural systems, and how NT affects the soil organic C (SOC) dynamics is a key component of these systems. The effect of a plow tillage (PT) and NT age chronosequence on SOC concentration and interactions with soil fertility were assessed in a variable charge Oxisol, located in the South Center quadrant of Parana State, Brazil (50 degrees 23`W and 24 degrees 36`S). The chronosequence consisted of the following six sites: (i) native field (NF); (ii) PT of the native field (PNF-1) involving conversion of natural vegetation to cropland; (iii) NT for 10 years (NT-10); (iv) NT for 20 years (NT-20); (v) NT for 22 years (NT-22); and (vi) conventional tillage for 22 years (CT-22) involving PT with one disking after summer harvest and one after winter harvest to 20 cm depth plus two harrow disking. Soil samples were collected from five depths (0-2.5; 2.5-5; 5-10; 10-20; and 20-40 cm) and SOC, pH (in H(2)O and KCl), Delta pH, potential acidity, exchangeable bases, and cation exchangeable capacity (CEC) were measured. An increase in SOC concentration positively affected the pH, the negative charge and the CEC and negatively impacted potential acidity. Regression analyses indicated a close relationship between the SOC concentration and other parameters measured in this study. The regression fitted between SOC concentration and CEC showed a close relationship. There was an increase in negative charge and CEC with increase in SOC concentration: CEC increased by 0.37 cmol(c) kg(-1) for every g of C kg(-1) soil. The ratio of ECEC:SOC was 0.23 cmol(c) kg(-1) for NF and increased to 0.49 cmol(c) kg(-1) for NT-22. The rates of P and K for 0-10 cm depth increased by 9.66 kg ha(-1) yr(-1) and 17.93 kg ha(-1) yr(-1), respectively, with NF as a base line. The data presented support the conclusion that long-term NT is a useful strategy for improving fertility of soils with variable charge. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper addresses the non-preemptive single machine scheduling problem to minimize total tardiness. We are interested in the online version of this problem, where orders arrive at the system at random times. Jobs have to be scheduled without knowledge of what jobs will come afterwards. The processing times and the due dates become known when the order is placed. The order release date occurs only at the beginning of periodic intervals. A customized approximate dynamic programming method is introduced for this problem. The authors also present numerical experiments that assess the reliability of the new approach and show that it performs better than a myopic policy.
