O papel da memória nas ramificações da cultura em Theodor W. Adorno e Walter Benjamin

A memória foi uma temática importante dentro das reflexões da Escola de Frankfurt. O objetivo do presente trabalho é esmiuçar as considerações de Theodor W. Adorno em torno do papel da articulação do passado na vida cotidiana e das suas materializações na cultura, bem como comparar essa linha de pensamento com a de Walter Benjamin, outro teórico que se debruçou demoradamente sobre este tema. Compararemos a forma como os dois autores focalizam a memória, bem como o papel que cada um deles atribui à cultura enquanto materialização do decorrido. Os dois autores forneceram respostas diferentes para a pergunta “o que significa elaborar o passado”. São justamente as aproximações e os afastamentos entre um e outro o que procuraremos estudar neste trabalho.

Walter B. Roberts Collection - Accession 485

This collection consists of black and white photographs autographed by the entertainers who performed at Winthrop College as part of the institution’s Artist Series program, a photograph of the Winthrop College Poetry Society including Dr. David B. Johnson, founder and first president of Winthrop, and photographs of Walter B. Roberts and other Winthrop College Professors as well as visiting instructors from Julliard School of Music. Artists include Jasha Heifetz, Jan Peerce, Will Rogers, Arthur Rubenstein, Risë Stevens, Vienna Choir Boys and many others.

Walter Caswell Sullivan Papers - Accession 201 - M88 (112)

The Walter Caswell Sullivan Papers consist of correspondence; bills of sale; a biographical sketch of Edward Walter Hall (1859-1949), pioneer educator of Rock Hill; a journal (1912-1915) of the Eats Club in Rock Hill; and war ration books. Most of the correspondence concerns a John H. Allen of Chester and subjects include the health and financial affairs, the shooting of a doctor, Hall family genealogy, and business transactions. The Eats Club's members were Julia Cork, Eva Fewell, Josie Hall, Anne Claire Hutchison, and Susan Steele.

Arnold Michael Shankman Papers - Accession 98

The Arnold Shankman Papers consist mainly of photocopies of manuscript collections which Dr. Shankman used for his research and writing. Included are pamphlets, biographical sketches, correspondence and newspaper accounts. Most of the collection relates to the American Civil War, particularly in Illinois, Georgia, and Pennsylvania, but there is material relating to Jewish history, African-Americans and United States foreign relations.

Review of The Biology of Freshwater Wetlands: Biology of Habitats by Arnold G. van der Valko

Wetland ecology is a relatively new field that developed from an initial interest in a few direct benefits that wetlands provide to society. Consequently, much early scientific work was stimulated by economic returns from specific wetland services, such as production of peat and provision of habitat for economically valuable wildlife (e.g., waterfowl and furbearers). Over time, societal interest in wetlands broadened, and these unique habitats are now valued for many additional services, including some that bear non market value. Common examples include carbon sequestration, flood reduction, water purification, and aesthetics. The increased recognition of the importance of wetlands has generated a diversity of job opportunities in wetland ecology and management. Despite the increased knowledge base and enhanced job market, I am not aware of any institutions that offer specialty degrees in this new discipline. Indeed, relatively few institutions offer specific wetland ecology classes, with Arnold G. van der Valk and a few of his peers at other universities being notable exceptions.

Die Zeit der Pädagogik. Zeitperspektiven im erziehungswissenschaftlichen Diskurs. Festschrift für Walter Herzog

Zeit ist in der öffentlichen Diskussion über Erziehung eine konstitu tive Bestimmung. Dabei wird sie sehr unterschiedlich gefasst: Erziehung wird verstanden als ein Prozess, der zeitlich konsekutiv geordnet werden muss. Es wird aber auch von einer Erziehungszeit der Eltern gesprochen und von der Schulzeit im Lebenslauf. Unterricht und Didaktik verlangen von den Lehrpersonen ein Zeitmanagement. Über Schulanfang, Schul ende und Dauer der Schulzeit wird politisch debattiert. Aber weit dar über hinaus werden Erziehung und Bildung selbst zum Instrument, mit dem in der Gegenwart die Zukunft, die Zeit des einzelnen Menschen und sogar der ganzen Gesellschaft berechenbar werden sollen. Trotz dieser Zentralität der Dimension «Zeit» ist die theoretische Diskussion darüber wenig entwickelt. Der vorliegende Band diskutiert aus soziologischen, pädagogisch-psychologischen und historischen Perspektiven die Zeit dimensionen von Erziehung.

Am 10. September 2010 fand in Bern die erste Schweizerische Tagung für Zivilverfahrensrecht des Instituts für Internationales Privatrecht und Verfahrensrecht der Universität Bern statt. Die Tagung mit dem Titel "Internationaler Zivilprozess 2011" befasste sich mit dem Zusammenspiel der am 1.1.2011 in Kraft tretenden neuen oder revidierten Erlasse (ZPO, revLugÜ, und revSchKG) im Rahmen des internationalen Zivilprozesses. Der Tagungsband enthält auf den Tagungsvorträgen basierende Beiträge namhafter Autoren zu aktuellen und praxisrelevanten Themen des neuen internationalen Zivilprozesses, namentlich zum neuen Arrestrecht, zur Behandlung von Zustellungsmängeln unter dem revLugÜ, zum Zahlungsbefehl im Lichte der revLugÜ-Zuständigkeiten, zur vollstreckbaren öffentliche Urkunde sowie zur Rechtshängigkeit und zur Streitgenossenschaft im internationalen Verhältnis. Der Tagungsband "Internationaler Zivilprozess 2011" eröffnet eine neue Schriftenreihe zum Internationalen Privatrecht und Verfahrensrecht.
