This paper examines the contributions of John Clarke to the field of political satire through his interviews with straight-man Bryan Dawe on ABC TV’s The 7.30 Report. Clarke’s work represents one of the last vestiges of what was once a vigorous satiric tradition in TV comedy, specifically the practice of political caricature. There was The Mavis Bramston Show in the 1960s and The Naked Vicar Show in the 1970s, while The Gillies Report in the 1980s was probably the best example of sustained political caricature in television comedy. Even in later sketch-based shows such as Fast Forward and The Late Show in the early 1990s, political caricature was a significant component of the material, whereas it seems to have all but disappeared from current television comedy. The paper investigates the disappearance of this type of comedy from Australian television screens and also discusses why the longevity, consistency, not to mention accuracy, of Clarke’s satire is so important in the current political climate. Clarke’s political caricature is almost entirely language-based, expertly parodying the spin-doctored rhetoric of our elected representatives and business leaders. This leads to a secondary focus of the paper, which is a discussion of Clarke’s unique form of satire in the context of what an historian (and former satirist) identifies as ‘the decay of public language’.

Es wurde eine Untersuchung zum Mechanismus der Vernetzung von Polychloropren durch Ethylenthioharnstoff in Kombination mit Zinkoxid durchgeführt. Dies wurde mit einer Überprüfung der Vernetzungsmechanismen von Polychloroprenkautschuk mit Ethylenthioharnstoff und Zinkoxid getrennt bzw. gemeinsam erreicht. Dabei kamen spektroskopische und physikalische Charakterisierungsverfahren zum Einsatz, um die Vernetzungsmechanismen von  CR mit anderen Standardvulkanisationsbeschleunigern und Modellverbindungen – mit ETU-analogen Strukturen und Funktionalitäten – zu erforschen. Aus den Untersuchungen resultierte der Vorschlag zu einem neuen Mechanismus, nach dem ETU und ZnO Polychloropren synergistisch vernetzen. Zusätzlich wurden neue Hinweise gewonnen, die gleichzeitig bestehende Mechanismen, die schon zur Vernetzung von Polychloropren veröffentlicht wurden, untermauern. An investigation into the mechanism by which ethylene thiourea crosslinks polychloroprene in combination with zinc oxide was undertaken. This was achieved through an examination of the mechanisms of crosslinking polychloroprene rubber with ETU and ZnO separately and in unison. Spectroscopic and physical characterisation techniques were employed to probe the crosslinking mechanisms of CR using other standard rubber accelerators and model compounds with analogous structures and functionalities to ETU. These investigations have resulted in the proposal of a new mechanism by which ETU and ZnO can synergistically crosslink polychloroprene, in addition to providing new evidence to support concomitant mechanisms already published for crosslinking polychloroprene.

This project analyzes contemporary black diasporic writing in Canada, arguing that Dionne Brand, Austin Clarke and Tessa McWatt evince a unique form of double-consciousness in their writings. Their work transforms African-American double-consciousness by locating it simultaneously within both the black diaspora and the practice of Canadian multiculturalism. The objective of this project is to offer a critical framework for situating these writers within the legacy of both Black Atlantic and Canadian cultural production. These writers do not aim to resolve their double-consciousness but rather dwell within that contradictory doubleness and hyphenation, forcing nation and diaspora to contend with one another in a discomfiting and unsettling dialogue. These authors employ the absences of the black diaspora to imagine new forms of black cultural production, multicultural citizenship and national identity. Their works produce a grammar of diasporic double-consciousness that locates the absented origins of diaspora within Canada. Brand’s depiction of temporality and Clarke’s tracing of movement explore the continuities between nation and diaspora while re-membering neglected aspects of the history of black Canada, such as the life and death of Albert Johnson. McWatt extends this blackening of nation by depicting coalitions between diasporic, indigenous, raced and sexed subjects. These authors transform hegemonic Canadian narratives of nation by dwelling in the hyphen, while their evocation of memory, absence, trauma, and desire gives blackness new meaning and legitimacy.
