Methadone is a little used opioid in veterinary practice, and there are still questions about its use. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of intramuscular (IM) or intravenous (IV) administration of methadone on cardiopulmonary parameters and times of extubation and recovery in female dogs submitted to ovariohysterectomy. Sixteen adult female dogs were used and premedicated with levomepromazine (0.6mg/kg, IM). After 20 minutes, propofol (5mg/kg, IV) was used for induction and anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane. After 10 minutes, methadone at 0.3mg/kg was administered intravenously in IVG and intramuscularly in IMG. The measurement of heart (HR) and respiratory rates (RR), median arterial pressure (MAP), esophagic temperature (ET) and concentration of end-tidal carbon dioxide (PE'CO2) was performed immediately before the administration of the opioid (T0), after 20 minutes (T1) and then at 10-minute intervals (T2, T3, T4 and T5). The statistical analysis used was profile (5%). HR, APM, RR, PE'CO2, BT and SpO2 did not differ significantly among times or between groups at any time. Times of extubation and recovery were higher in IVG. It is possible to conclude that IV and IM administration of methadone did not produce changes in the cardiorespiratory parameters of that specie.

The preventive efficacy of ivermectin and abamectin administered in different routes (subcutaneous, intramuscular and pour-on) and doses (200 and 500mcg kg(-1)) against Cochliomyia hominivorax in the scrotal sac of cattle after castration, was evaluated. Animals from six different farms, in the state of Sao Paulo and Minas Gerais, Brazil were used. For each study, 3045 uncastrated bulls, depending on the number of groups, were selected. On day zero of the study, the procedure was carried out by the method of bloody castration and the animals were treated after this process. The efficacy of ivermectin and abamectin administered via the pour-on (500mcg kg(-1)), subcutaneous (200mcg kg(-1)) as well as the efficacy of abamectin intramuscularly (200mcg kg(-1)) were evaluated. In each experiment, one group of animals was kept as control. The animals were evaluated from the 3rd to the 14th day after castration process/treatment. The efficacy values for both active principles were <= 30% the next day 10 post-treatment (PT), and in five experiments, both ivermectin and abamectin, regardless of the route of administration, were ineffective (0.0%) on the day 10th PT. Based on the results found in this study, conducted in different properties from southeastern Brazil, both ivermectin and abamectin, when used the protocol presented, were considered ineffective in preventing scrotal myiasis in bulls, irrespective of the route of administration and dose used.

Oxidative stress is related with physiopathology of diabetes mellitus type II and with its secondary complications, such as diabetic nephropathy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of n-acetylcysteine NAC, an antioxidant from Allium cepa, on oxidative stress, morphometrical and nutritional parameters and basal metabolism and energetic substrate utilization, serum glucose and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and renal function of high-sucrose intake rats. Animals were initially divided into three groups. Rats in the control group (C; n=10) were given free access to a standard chow and water; (S; n=10) group received standard chow and 30% sucrose in its drinking water; (SN; n=5) group received standard chow and 2g/L NAC and 30% sucrose in its drinking water. After 25 days of treatments, rats were submitted to indirect calorimetry in fasted and feed states. After 30 days of treatments, rats from C and S groups were divided into four groups of five rats each. The (CC) and (SS) groups were given an intra-gastric dose 0,6mL saline (0,9%NaCl) and the (CNAC) and (SNAC) groups were treated with a intra-gastric dose of 0,6mL NAC (160g/day), and then everybody received a intra-gastric dose of glucose solution (20%) for the OGTT. Animals of S and SN groups have higher liquid consumption and lower food consumption than C group. Calorimetric analyses confirm that despite of the final body weight had not statistical difference among groups, S group have lower resting metabolic rate when compared to C and SN animals. Besides, S group has higher respiratory quotient, higher carbohydrate oxidation and lower lipid oxidation, both in fasted and feed states, than C and SN groups, evidencing the beneficial effect of NAC. Fasting plasma glucose is increased in SS and SNAC animals when compared to CC and CNAC, however SN group has glicemic level at 30 min before OGTT decreased when ...(Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Peripartum or Transition Period is, generally, defined as the period between three weeks pre-calving and three weeks after calving. It is a critical and crucial stage to the cow’s health and to economic profitability during the lactation. During this phase the cows experience several changes that prepare them to calve and milk yield. These changes contribute to metabolic disorders’ incidence, and can lead to reproductive function and milk yield reduction, and increase the herd’s disposal. Silicosis, a common type of pneumoconiosis, is an occupational lung disease caused by inhalation of silica dust often with mining activity and thus reaches the miners. The fine and ultrafine silica particles deposited in the alveolar epithelium may lead to the development of progressive massive fibrosis. An increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production has been proposed to explain the mechanism for induction of pulmonary fibrosis in silicosis. In this situation, alveolar macrophages are activated to phagocytes silica particles deposited in the alveoli. The activated macrophages secrete large amounts of ROS that in turn induce synthesis of fibrotic factors. In addition, the activity of antioxidant enzymes is impaired, which results in increased lipid peroxidation, as well as generating a local inflammatory process. Diffuse pulmonary fibrosis progresses with interstitial collagen deposition. Interstitial collagen overlies small pulmonary arteries and arterioles and thus it is associated with pulmonary hypertension in pulmonary fibrotic diseases. In addition, cytokines and silica particles passing through the respiratory membrane can reach the bloodstream. In this context, the increase in the generation of ROS in the circulation may lead to a reduction in the bioavailability of nitric oxide, an important endothelium-derived relaxing factor. A deficiency in the nitric oxide bioavailability can result in vascular endothelial dysfunction. Moreover, pro-inflammatory cytokines could contribute to the impairment of endothelial function. In the airways, pro-inflammatory cytokines can reduce the smooth muscle responsiveness to β- adrenergic agonists as isoproterenol. This report analyses the use of geosynthetics in railways for subgrade reinforcement and separation of the track layers. Cases of instrumented test sections were studied. These test sections were located in Australia (with geocomposite applications), Brazil (with geotextile and geodrid applications) and China (with geotextile and geodrid applications). Railway design methods using geosynthetics applications were analyzed as well. Based on a studied case for implementation of geosynthetics in a German railway, a railway track was simulated with and without the use of geosynthetics, respectively on PLAXIS v.8 and FERROVIA 3.0 softwares. The performance benefits of the geosynthetics applications in railways were, therefore, confirmed, based on the simulation results

The main objective of this study was to analyze the reliability of blood lactate concentration ([La]), oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate (FC) in an intermittent protoco, performed at 95%VO2max with passive or active recovery in untrained subjects. Participated of this study, active healthy males with 20 to 25 years, which were doing aerobic exercises witha weekly frequency of 3 sessions at least. The individulas performed, in different days, the following protocols in a cyclergometer: 1) An incremental test until exhaustion to determine maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and the intensity at VO2max; b) Two transitions at 95%VO2max for the determination of the VO2 kinetics parameters and; c) Two intermittent tests until exhaustion, with repetitions at 95% IVO2max and with durantion defined as being half of the duration of the slow component. The duration of the recovery was half of the duration of the effort (effort:pause of 2:1). This test was performed with passive (GP) and active recovery (GA). The VO2 and FC were measured continulously in both tests. Blood collections were performed for the determination of the [La]. There was significant correlação in both groups for VO2 (ATIVA - 0.94, PASSIVA - 0.75), [La] (ATIVA - 0.83, PASSIVA - 0.90) and FC (0.93) only for the passive group. Thus, it can be concluded that the cardiorrespiratory and metabolic responses present good realiability in an intermittent exercise with active or passive recovery
