At zero temperature and strong applied magnetic fields the ground state of an anisotropic antiferromagnet is a saturated paramagnet with fully aligned spins. We study the quantum phase transition as the field is reduced below an upper critical H(c2) and the system enters a XY-antiferromagnetic phase. Using a bond operator representation we consider a model spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic with single-ion anisotropy in hypercubic lattices under strong magnetic fields. We show that the transition at H(c2) can be interpreted as a Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of magnons. The theoretical results are used to analyze our magnetization versus field data in the organic compound NiCl(2)-4SC(NH(2))(2) (DTN) at very low temperatures. This is the ideal BEC system to study this transition since H(c2) is sufficiently low to be reached with static magnetic fields (as opposed to pulsed fields). The scaling of the magnetization as a function of field and temperature close to H(c2) shows excellent agreement with the theoretical predictions. It allows us to obtain the quantum critical exponents and confirm the BEC nature of the transition at H(c2).

Very low intensity and phase fluctuations are present in a bright light field such as a laser beam. These subtle quantum fluctuations may be used to encode quantum information. Although intensity is easily measured with common photodetectors, accessing the phase information requires interference experiments. We introduce one such technique, the rotation of the noise ellipse of light, which employs an optical cavity to achieve the conversion of phase to intensity fluctuations. We describe the quantum noise of light and how it can be manipulated by employing an optical resonance technique and compare it to similar techniques, such as Pound - Drever - Hall laser stabilization and homodyne detection. We report the microwave dielectric properties and photoluminescence of undoped and europium oxide doped Ta(2)O(5) fibers, grown by laser heated pedestal growth technique. The effects of Eu(2)O(3) doping (1-3 mol %) on the structural, optical, and dielectric properties were investigated. At a frequency of 5 GHz, the undoped material exhibits a dielectric permittivity of 21 and for Eu(2)O(3) doped Ta(2)O(5) samples it increases, reaching up to 36 for the highest doping concentration. Nevertheless, the dielectric losses maintain a very low value. For this wide band gap oxide, Eu(3+) optical activation was achieved and the emission is observed up to room temperature. Thus, the transparency and high permittivity make this material promising for electronic devices and microwave applications. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

This work presents a study of the catalytic oxidation of ethanol on polycrystalline gold electrode in alkaline media. The investigation was carried out by means of chronoamperometry, cyclic voltammetry, and in situ FTIR spectroscopy. The main goal was to investigate the early stages of ethanol electrooxidation, namely at fairly low potentials (E = 600 mV vs. RHE) and for moderate reaction times (t < 300 s). Chronoamperometric experiments show a current increase accompanying the increasing in the ethanol concentration up to about 2 M and then a slight decrease at 3 M. Adsorbed CO has been observed as early as about 200 mV vs. RHE and indicates that the cleavage of the C-C bond might occur, probably to a small extent, at very low overpotentials during ethanol adsorption on gold surface. The amount of dissolved acetate ions produced during the chronoamperomentry was followed by the asymmetric stretching band at 1558 cm(-1) as a function of time, and found to increase linearly with time up to 300 s. This allowed estimating the reaction order of acetate formation with respect to ethanol concentration.

Addressing spatial variability in nitrogen (N) availability in the Central Brazilian Amazon, we hypothesized that N availability varies among white-sand vegetation types (campina and campinarana) and lowland tropical forests (dense terra-firme forests) in the Central Brazilian Amazon, under the same climate conditions. Accordingly, we measured soil and foliar N concentration and N isotope ratios (delta(15)N) throughout the campina-campinarana transect and compared to published dense terra-firme forest results. There were no differences between white-sand vegetation types in regard to soil N concentration, C:N ratio and delta(15)N across the transect. Both white-sand vegetation types showed very low foliar N concentrations and elevated foliar C:N ratios, and no significant difference between site types was observed. Foliar delta(15)N was depleted, varying from -9.6 to 1.6aEuro degrees in the white-sand vegetations. The legume Aldina heterophylla had the highest average delta(15)N values (-1.5aEuro degrees) as well as the highest foliar N concentration (2.1%) while the non-legume species had more depleted delta(15)N values and the average foliar N concentrations varied from 0.9 to 1.5% among them. Despite the high variation in foliar delta(15)N among plants, a significant and gradual (15)N-enrichment in foliar isotopic signatures throughout the campina-campinarana transect was observed. Individual plants growing in the campinarana were significantly enriched in (15)N compared to those in campina. In the white-sand N-limited ecosystems, the differentiation of N use seems to be a major cause of variations observed in foliar delta(15)N values throughout the campina-campinarana transect.

As insects increase in radiotolerance as they develop and usually several developmental stages of the pest may be present in the fresh shipped commodity, it is important to know the radiation susceptibility of the stages of the target insect before the establishment of ionizing radiation quarantine treatments. This study was performed to determine the radiotolerance of eggs of the oriental fruit moth, Grapholita molesta (Busck) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), to gamma radiation. This species is considered as one of the most serious worldwide pests for temperate fruits, especially peaches. Eggs (12 h old) were exposed to 0 (control), 25, 35, 50, 75, 100, 125 and 150 Gy of gamma radiation. Surviving larvae were allowed to feed on an artificial diet. Three days after irradiation, it was verified that larvae`s cephalic capsules were significantly affected by gamma radiation, and the estimated mean LD(90) and LD(99) were 66.3 Gy and 125.8 Gy, respectively. Oriental fruit moth eggs revealed to be quite radiosensitive and very low doses as 50 Gy were sufficient to disrupt G. molesta embryogenesis. At 25 Gy, only male adults originated from the surviving larvae and, after mating with untreated fertile females, shown to be sterile. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

OBJECTIVE: The goal was to review published studies of analgesic effects of sweet solutions, to ascertain areas with sufficient evidence of effectiveness and areas of uncertainty. METHODS: Databases searched included Medline, Embase, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature database, and PsycINFO, using the terms pain*, infant*, neonat*, newborn*, sucrose, glucose, and alternative sugars. Publications were sorted according to type, year, painful procedure studied, placebo/no-treatment groups, population studied, and country of publication. RESULTS: A total of 298 relevant unique publications involving human infants were identified; 125 (42%) were primary research studies, of which 116 (93%) were randomized controlled trials. Healthy preterm or term newborns were included in 82 studies (65%), and sick or very low birth weight infants were included in 22 (18%). Most studies included single episodes of painful procedures, with only 3 (2%) conducted over long periods. Procedures investigated most frequently were heel lance (49%), venipuncture (14%), and intramuscular injection (14%). Placebo or no-treatment groups were included in 111 studies (89%); in 103 (93%) of those studies, sweet solutions reduced behavioral responses, compared with placebo/no treatment. CONCLUSION: Clinical equipoise relating to analgesic effects of sweet solutions no longer exists for single episodes of procedures for healthy preterm and term newborn infants. Uncertainties include outcomes after prolonged use of sweet solutions, concomitant use of other analgesics, and effectiveness beyond the newborn period. Future research should focus on addressing these knowledge and research gaps. Pediatrics 2010;126:894-902

P>Background This study examined the effects of acute supramaximal exercise (similar to 115% VO(2max)) on the blood lipid profile for three different carbohydrate (CHO) storage levels (control, low and high). Methods Six male subjects were randomly divided into three different groups: control, low CHO and high CHO. These groups differed in the diet to which the subjects were submitted before each exercise session. The lipid profile [triglycerides (TG), very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, TG/HDL-C ratio and total cholesterol) was determined at rest, immediately after exercise and 1 h after exercise bouts. Results The time to exhaustion was lower in the low CHO condition compared with the control and high CHO condition (3 center dot 59 +/- 0 center dot 72; 2 center dot 91 +/- 0 center dot 56; and 4 center dot 26 +/- 0 center dot 69 min; P < 0 center dot 05). The energy expenditure (control: 251 center dot 1 +/- 56 center dot 0 kJ; low CHO: 215 center dot 2 +/- 28 center dot 6 kJ; and high CHO: 310 center dot 4 +/- 64 center dot 9 kJ) was significantly different between the low and high CHO conditions (P < 0 center dot 05). There were no significant changes in the lipid profile for any of the experimental conditions (control, low and high; P < 0 center dot 05). Glucose and insulin levels did not show time-dependent changes in any of the conditions (P > 0 center dot 05). Conclusions These results indicate that a supramaximal exercise session has no significant effects on lipid metabolism.

Lentinula edodes, commonly called shiitake, is considered a choice edible mushroom with exotic taste and medicinal quality. L. edodes grows very well and produces a range of enzymes when cultivated on eucalyptus residues. Development of appropriate experimental procedures for recovery and determination of enzymes became a widely important cash crop. In this work, enzymes produced by L. edodes were extracted using different pH buffer and determined regarding peroxidases and proteases. Lignin peroxidase (LiP) was not detected in the extracts based on veratryl alcohol or azure B oxidation. Proteases were very low while Mn-peroxidases (MnP) predominated. The optimal pH for MnP recovery was 5.0, under agitation at 25 degrees C. The oxidation of phenol red decreased after dark-colored small compounds or ions were eliminated by dialysis. The extract of L. edodes contained components of high molecular weight, such as proteases or high polyphenol, that could be involved in the LiP inactivation. L. edodes sample previously submitted to dialysis was also joined to UP of Phanerochaete chrysosporium and a total inhibition of UP was observed. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ti-6Al-4V alloy has been widely used in restorative surgery due to its high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, some studies showed that V and Al release in the organism might induce cytotoxic effects and neurological disorders, which led to the development of V-free alloys and both V- and Al-free alloys containing Nb, Zr, Ta, or Mo. Among these alloys, Ti-13Nb-13Zr alloy is promising due to its better biomechanical compatibility than Ti-6Al-4V. In this work, the corrosion behavior of Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-xNb-13Zr alloys (x=5, 13, and 20) was evaluated in Ringer`s solution (pH 7.5) at 37 degrees C through open-circuit potential measurements, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Spontaneous passivity was observed for all materials in this medium. Low corrosion current densities (in the order of 10(-7) A/cm(2)) and high impedance values (in the order of 10(5) Omega cm(2) at low frequencies) indicated their high corrosion resistance. EIS results showed that the passivating films were constituted of an outer porous layer (very low resistance) and an inner compact layer (high resistance), the latter providing the corrosion resistance of the materials. There was evidence that the Ti-xNb-13Zr alloys were more corrosion resistant than both Ti and Ti-6Al-4V in Ringer`s solution.

Oxy-coal combustion is a viable technology, for new and existing coal-fired power plants, as it facilitates carbon capture and, thereby, can mitigate climate change. Pulverized coals of various ranks, biomass, and their blends were burned to assess the evolution of combustion effluent gases, such as NO(x), SO(2), and CO, under a variety of background gas compositions. The fuels were burned in an electrically heated laboratory drop-tube furnace in O(2)/N(2) and O(2)/CO(2) environments with oxygen mole fractions of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%, at a furnace temperature of 1400 K. The fuel mass flow rate was kept constant in most cases, and combustion was fuel-lean. Results showed that in the case of four coals studied, NO(x) emissions in O(2)/CO(2) environments were lower than those in O(2)/N(2) environments by amounts that ranged from 19 to 43% at the same oxygen concentration. In the case of bagasse and coal/bagasse blends, the corresponding NO(x) reductions ranged from 22 to 39%. NO(x) emissions were found to increase with increasing oxygen mole fraction until similar to 50% O(2) was reached; thereafter, they monotonically decreased with increasing oxygen concentration. NO(x) emissions from the various fuels burned did not clearly reflect their nitrogen content (0.2-1.4%), except when large content differences were present. SO(2) emissions from all fuels remained largely unaffected by the replacement of the N(2) diluent gas with CO(2), whereas they typically increased with increasing sulfur content of the fuels (0.07-1.4%) and decreased with increasing calcium content of the fuels (0.28-2.7%). Under the conditions of this work, 20-50% of the fuel-nitrogen was converted to NO(x). The amount of fuel-sulfur converted to SO(2) varied widely, depending on the fuel and, in the case of the bituminous coal, also depending on the O(2) mole fraction. Blending the sub-bituminous coal with bagasse reduced its SO(2) yields, whereas blending the bituminous coal with bagasse reduced both its SO(2) and NO(x) yields. CO emissions were generally very low in all cases. The emission trends were interpreted on the basis of separate combustion observations.

S2 cell populations (S2AcRVGP2K and S2MtRVGP-Hy) were selected after transfection of gene expression vectors carrying the cDNA encoding the rabies virus glycoprotein (RVGP) gene under the control of the constitutive (actin) or inductive (metallothionein) promoters. These cell populations were cultivated in a 1 L bioreactor mimicking a large scale bioprocess. Cell cultures were carried out at 90 rpm and monitored/controlled for temperature (28 degrees C) and dissolved oxygen (10 or 50% air saturation). Cell growth attained similar to 1.5-3 x 10(7) cells/mL after 3-4 clays of cultivation. The constitutive synthesis of RVGP in S2AcRVGP2K cells led to values of 0.76 mu g/10(7) cells at day 4 of culture. The RVGP synthesis in S2MtRVGP-Hy cell fraction increased upon CuSO(4) induction attaining specific productivities of 1.5-2 mu g/10(7) cells at clays 4-5. RVGP values in supernatant as a result of cell lysis were always very low (<0.2 mu g/mL) indicating good integrity of cells in culture. Overall the RVGP productivity was of 1.5-3 mg/L. Our data showed an important influence of dissolved oxygen on RVGP synthesis allowing a higher and sustained productivity by S2MtRVGP-Hy cells when cultivated with a DO of 10% air saturation. The RVGP productivity in bioreactors shown here mirrors those previously observed for T-flasks and shaker bottles and allow the preparation of the large RVGP quantities required for studies of structure and function. We propose a robust and low complexity scheme to estimate and track carrier frequency from signals traveling under low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions in highly nonstationary channels. These scenarios arise in planetary exploration missions subject to high dynamics, such as the Mars exploration rover missions. The method comprises a bank of adaptive linear predictors (ALP) supervised by a convex combiner that dynamically aggregates the individual predictors. The adaptive combination is able to outperform the best individual estimator in the set, which leads to a universal scheme for frequency estimation and tracking. A simple technique for bias compensation considerably improves the ALP performance. It is also shown that retrieval of frequency content by a fast Fourier transform (FFT)-search method, instead of only inspecting the angle of a particular root of the error predictor filter, enhances performance, particularly at very low SNR levels. Simple techniques that enforce frequency continuity improve further the overall performance. In summary we illustrate by extensive simulations that adaptive linear prediction methods render a robust and competitive frequency tracking technique.

In this work we explore the noise characteristics in lithographically-defined two terminal devices containing self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots. The experimental ensemble of InAs dots show random telegraph noise (RTN) with tuneable relative amplitude-up to 150%-in well defined temperature and source-drain applied voltage ranges. Our numerical simulation indicates that the RTN signature correlates with a very low number of quantum dots acting as effective charge storage centres in the structure for a given applied voltage. The modulation in relative amplitude variation can thus be associated to the altered electrostatic potential profile around such centres and enhanced carrier scattering provided by a charged dot.

A new excitation model for the numerical solution of field integral equation (EFIE) applied to arbitrarily shaped monopole antennas fed by coaxial lines is presented. This model yields a stable solution for the input impedance of such antennas with very low numerical complexity and without the convergence and high parasitic capacitance problems associated with the usual delta gap excitation.
