One of the key systems of a Wave Energy Converter for extraction of wave energy is the Power Take-Off (PTO) device. This device transforms the mechanical energy of a moving body into electrical energy. This paper describes the model of an innovative PTO based on independently activated double-acting hydraulic cylinders array. The model has been developed using a simulation tool, based on a port-based approach to model hydraulics systems. The components and subsystems used in the model have been parameterized as real components and their values experimentally obtained from an existing prototype. In fact, the model takes into account most of the hydraulic losses of each component. The simulations show the flexibility to apply different restraining torques to the input movement depending on the geometrical configuration and the hydraulic cylinders on duty, easily modified by a control law. The combination of these two actions allows suitable flexibility to adapt the device to different sea states whilst optimizing the energy extraction. The model has been validated using a real test bench showing good correlations between simulation and experimental tests.

Quality control is considered from the simulator's perspective through comparative simulation of an ultra energy-efficient building with EE4-DOE2.1E and EnergyPlus. The University of Calgary's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum Child Development Centre, with a 66% certified energy cost reduction rating, was the case study building. A Natural Resources Canada incentive program required use of EE4 interface with DOE2.1E simulation engine for energy modelling. As DOE2.1E lacks specific features to simulate advanced systems such as radiant cooling in the CDC, an EnergyPlus model was developed to further evaluate these features. The EE4-DOE2.1E model was used for quality control during development of the base EnergyPlus model and simulation results were compared. Advanced energy systems then added to the EnergyPlus model generated small difference in estimated total annual energy use. The comparative simulation process helped identify the main input errors in the draft EnergyPlus model. The comparative use of less complex simulation programs is recommended for quality control when producing more complex models. © 2009 International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA).

Inflatable aerodynamic decelerators present potential advantages for planetary entry in missions of robotic and human exploration. The design of these structures face many engineering challenges, including complex deformable geometries, anisotropic material response, and coupled shockturbulence interactions. In this paper, we describe a comprehensive computational fluid-structure interaction study of an inflation cycle of a tension cone decelerator in supersonic flow and compare the simulations with earlier published experimental results. The aeroshell design and flow conditions closely match recent experiments conducted at Mach 2.5. The structural model is a 16-sided polygonal tension cone with seams between each segment. The computational model utilizes adaptive mesh refinement, large-eddy simulation, and shell mechanics with self-contact modeling to represent the flow and structure interaction. This study focuses on the dynamics of the structure as the inflation pressure varies gradually, and the behavior of forces experienced by the flexible and rigid (the payload capsule) structures. © 2011 by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Inc. In the present work we compare the performance of organic solar cells, based on the bulk heterojunction system of P3HT:PCBM when adequate silver nanoparticles (NPs) are incorporated in two distinct places among the device structure. Introduction of NPs on top of the transparent anode revealed better overall performance with an increased efficiency of 17%. Alternatively, placing the NPs on top of the active photovoltaic layer resulted to 25% higher photo-current generation albeit with inferior electrical characteristics (i.e series and shunt resistance). Our findings suggest that enhanced scattering to non-specular directions from NPs site is maximized when penetrating light meets the particles after the polymer blend, but even this mechanism is not sufficient enough to explain the enhanced short circuit current observed. A second mechanism should be feasible; that is plasmon enhancement which is more efficient in the case where NPs are in direct contact with the polymer blend. J-V characteristics measured in the dark showed that NPs placed on top of the ITO film act as enhanced hole conducting sites, as evident by the lower series resistance values in these cells, suggesting this mechanism as more significant in this case. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. The dithiophene donor-acceptor copolymers that are bridged either with carbon (C-PCPDTBT) or silicon atoms (Si-PCPDTBT) belong to a promising family of materials for use in photoactive layers for organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs). In this work, we implement the non-destructive Spectroscopic Ellipsometry technique in the near infrared to the far ultraviolet spectral region in combination with advanced theoretical modeling to investigate the vertical distribution of the C-PCPDTBT and Si-PCPDTBT polymer and fullerene ([6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester - PC70BM) phases in the blend, as well as the effect of the polymer-to-fullerene ratio on the distribution mechanism. It was found that the C-PCPDTBT:PC70BM blends have donor-enriched top regions and acceptor-enriched bottom regions, whereas the donor and acceptor phases are more homogeneously intermixed in the Si-PCPDTBT:PC70BM blends. We suggest that the chemical incompatibility of the two phases as expressed by the difference in their surface energy, may be a key element in promoting the segregation of the lower surface phase to the top region of the photoactive layer. We found that the increase of the photoactive layer thickness reduces the polymer enrichment at the cathode, producing a more homogeneous phase distribution of donor and acceptor in the bulk that leads to the increase of the OPV efficiency. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.

In order to improve crystal quality for growth of quaternary InAlGaN, a series of InAlGaN films were grown on GaN buffer layer under different growth temperatures and carrier gases by low-pressure metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was employed to measure the chemical composition of the quaternary, high resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD) and photoluminescence (PL) technique were used to characterize structural and optical properties of the epilayers, respectively. The PL spectra of InAlGaN show with and without the broad-deep level emission when only N2 and a N2+H2 mixture were used as carrier gas, respectively. At pressure of 1.01×104 Pa and with mixed gases of nitrogen and hydrogen as carrier gas, different alloy compositions of the films were obtained by changing the growth temperature while keeping the fluxes of precursors of indium (In), aluminum (Al), gallium (Ga) and nitrogen (N2) constant. A combination of HRXRD and PL measurements enable us to explore the relative optimum growth parameters-growth temperature between 850℃ and 870℃,using mixed gas of N2+H2 as carrier gas.

4-Bromo-9,9'-spirobifluorene is facilely synthesized, and from this precursor, two ortho-linked oligo-9,9'-spirobifluorenes, 44BSF and 24TSF, are constructed. Devices with 24TSF as the full-hydrocarbon host material and Ir(ppy)(3) or (ppq)(2)Ir(acac) as the triplet emitter show maximum external quantum efficiencies of 12.6 and 10.5% for green and red electrophosphorescence, respectively.

It was studied that the nanostructure formed on a gold surface via a simple oxidation-reduction cycles (ORC) in 0.1 M KCl containing Ru(bpy)(3)(2+) with different concentrations. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) and energy-dispersed spectroscopy (EDS) were used to characterize the nanostructure formed on the gold surface. Sweep-step voltammetry and corresponding electroluminescence (ECL) response, in situ electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) measurement were used to monitor the ORC. procedure. It was found that the surface structure became more uniform in the presence of Ru(bpy)(3)(2+), and the surface roughness was decreasing with the increasing of Ru(bpY)(3)(2+) concentration, suggesting a simple and effective method to control the formation of nanostructure on the gold surface.

We study the origin of robustness of yeast cell cycle cellular network through uncovering its underlying energy landscape. This is realized from the information of the steady-state probabilities by solving a discrete set of kinetic master equations for the network. We discovered that the potential landscape of yeast cell cycle network is funneled toward the global minimum, G1 state. The ratio of the energy gap between G1 and average versus roughness of the landscape termed as robustness ratio ( RR) becomes a quantitative measure of the robustness and stability for the network. The funneled landscape is quite robust against random perturbations from the inherent wiring or connections of the network. There exists a global phase transition between the more sensitive response or less self-degradation phase leading to underlying funneled global landscape with large RR, and insensitive response or more self-degradation phase leading to shallower underlying landscape of the network with small RR. Furthermore, we show that the more robust landscape also leads to less dissipation cost of the network. Least dissipation and robust landscape might be a realization of Darwinian principle of natural selection at cellular network level. It may provide an optimal criterion for network wiring connections and design.
