A series of the most common chelators used in magnetic resonance imaging ( MRI) and in radiopharmaceuticals for medical diagnosis and tumour therapy, H(4)dota, H(4)teta, H(8)dotp and H(8)tetp, is examined from a chemical point of view. Differences between 12- and 14-membered tetraazamacrocyclic derivatives with methylcarboxylate and methylphosphonate pendant arms and their chelates with divalent first-series transition metal and trivalent lanthanide ions are discussed on the basis of their thermodynamic stability constants, X- ray structures and theoretical studies.

Recently the BTBP-family of solvating ligands have been studied for their ability to separate trivalent actinides from lanthanides. Five of the BTBPs were evaluated for their ability to extract nickel(II) from aqueous nitrate media into cyclohexanone. It was shown by both solvent extraction and X-ray diffraction experiments that the BTBPs are capable of forming both 1: 1 and 1:2 complexes with nickel(II). When the BTBP concentration is low the nickel distribution ratio is governed by the formation of the nickel/BTBP complex while at higher BTBP concentrations the partitioning of the nickel complex between the two phases dictates the nickel distribution ratio.

The partitioning of minor trivalent actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) is one of the challenges in the chemical treatment of nuclear waste. The optimal ligand to carry out the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) using solvent extraction has to meet several important criteria: high selectivity towards the solute, chemical and radiolytic stability, stripping possibilities and recycling of the organic phase, high separation factors and good distribution ratio, to name just a few of them. A chronological line can be drawn along the development of each extraction ligand family and some milestones are emphasized in this overview. Further developments in organic synthesis of extracting ligands are expected.

The synthesis of hexagonal barium ferrite (BaFe12O19) was studied under hydrothermal conditions by a method in which a significant amount of ferrous chloride was introduced along side ferric chloride among the starting materials. Though all of the Fe2+ ions in the starting material were converted to Fe3+ ions in the final product, Fe2+ was confirmed to participate differently from the Fe3+ used in the conventional method in the mechanism of forming barium ferrite. Indeed the efficiency of the synthesis and the quality of the product and the lack of impurities such as Fe2O3 and BaFe2O4 were improved when Fe2+ was included. However, the amount of ferrous ions that could be included to obtain the desired product was limited with an optimum ratio of 2:8 for FeCl2/FeCl3 when only 2h of reaction time were needed. It was also found that the role of trivalent Fe3+ could be successfully replaced by Al3+. Up to 50% of their on could be replaced by Al3+ in the reactants to produce Al- doped products. It was also found that the ratio of Fe2+/M3+ could be increased in the presence of Al3+ to produce high quality barium ferrite.

This study was designed to determine the response of in vitro fermentation parameters to incremental levels of polyethylene glycol (PEG) when tanniniferous tree fruits (Dichrostachys cinerea, Acacia erioloba, A. erubiscens, A. nilotica and Piliostigma thonningii) were fermented using the Reading Pressure Technique. The trivalent ytterbium precipitable phenolics content of fruit substrates ranged from 175 g/kg DM in A. erubiscens to 607 g/kg DM in A. nilotica, while the soluble condensed tannin content ranged from 0.09 AU550nm/40mg in A. erioloba to 0.52 AU550nm/40 mg in D. cinerea. The ADF was highest in P. thonningii fruits (402 g/kg DM) and lowest in A. nilotica fruits (165 g/kg DM). Increasing the level of PEG caused an exponential rise to a maximum (asymptotic) for cumulative gas production, rate of gas production and nitrogen degradability in all substrates except P. thonningii fruits. Dry matter degradability for fruits containing higher levels of soluble condensed tannins (D. cinerea and P. thonningii), showed little response to incremental levels of PEG after incubation for 24 h. The minimum levels of PEG required to maximize in vitro fermentation of tree fruits was found to be 200 mg PEG/g DM of sample for all tree species except A. erubiscens fruits, which required 100 mg PEG/g DM sample. The study provides evidence that PEG levels lower than 1 g/g DM sample can be used for in vitro tannin bioassays to reduce the cost of evaluating non-conventional tanniniferous feedstuffs used in developing countries in the tropics and subtopics. The use of in vitro nitrogen degradability in place of the favoured dry matter degradability improved the accuracy of PEG as a diagnostic tool for tannins in in vitro fermentation systems.

Four new 6,6′-bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2′-bipyridine (BTBP) ligands, which contain either additional alkyl groups on the pyridine rings or seven-membered aliphatic rings attached to the triazine rings, have been synthesized, and the effects of the additional alkyl substitution in the 4- and 4′-positions of the pyridine rings on their extraction properties with LnIII and AnIII cations in simulated nuclear waste solutions have been studied. The speciation of ligand 13 with some trivalent lanthanide nitrates was elucidated by 1H NMR spectroscopic titrations and ESI-MS. Although 13 formed both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with LaIII and YIII, only 1:2 complexes were observed with EuIII and CeIII. Quite unexpectedly, both alkyl-substituted ligands 12 and 13 showed lower solubilities in certain diluents than the unsubstituted ligand CyMe4-BTBP. Compared to CyMe4-BTBP, alkyl-substitution was found to decrease the rates of metal-ion extraction of the ligands in both 1-octanol and cyclohexanone. A highly efficient (DAm > 10) and selective (SFAm/Eu > 90) extraction was observed for 12 and 13 in cyclohexanone and for 13 in 1-octanol in the presence of a phase-transfer agent. The implications of these results for the design of improved extractants for radioactive waste treatment are discussed.

Polymers with the ability to heal themselves could provide access to materials with extended lifetimes in a wide range of applications such as surface coatings, automotive components and aerospace composites. Here we describe the synthesis and characterisation of two novel, stimuli-responsive, supramolecular polymer blends based on π-electron-rich pyrenyl residues and π-electron-deficient, chain-folding aromatic diimides that interact through complementary π–π stacking interactions. Different degrees of supramolecular “cross-linking” were achieved by use of divalent or trivalent poly(ethylene glycol)-based polymers featuring pyrenyl end-groups, blended with a known diimide–ether copolymer. The mechanical properties of the resulting polymer blends revealed that higher degrees of supramolecular “cross-link density” yield materials with enhanced mechanical properties, such as increased tensile modulus, modulus of toughness, elasticity and yield point. After a number of break/heal cycles, these materials were found to retain the characteristics of the pristine polymer blend, and this new approach thus offers a simple route to mechanically robust yet healable materials.

Impurity-interstitial dipoles in calcium fluoride solutions with Al3+, Yb3+ and La3+ fluorides were studied using the thermally stimulated depolarization current (TSDC) technique. The dipolar complexes are formed by substitutional trivalent ions in Ca2+ sites and interstitial fluorine in nearest neighbor sites. The relaxations observed at 150 K are assigned to dipoles nnR(S)(3+)- F-i(-) (R-S = La or Yb). The purpose of this work is to study the processes of energy storage in the fluorides following X-ray and gamma irradiation. Computer modelling techniques are used to obtain the formation energy of dipole defects. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Terbium (Tb) doped LaMgAl(11)O(19) phosphors have been prepared by the combustion of corresponding metal nitrates (oxidizer) and urea (fuel) at furnace temperature as low as 500 C Combustion synthesized powder phosphor was characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy techniques LaMgAl(11)O(19) doped with trivalent terbium ions emit weakly in blue and orange light region and strongly in green light region when excited by the ultraviolet light of 261 nm Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) studies were carried out to study the defect centres Induced in the phosphor by gamma irradiation and also to identify the defect centres responsible for the thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) process Room temperature ESR spectrum of irradiated phosphor appears to be a superposition of at least two defect centres One of the centres (centre I) with principal g-values g(parallel to) = 2 0417 and g(perpendicular to) = 2 0041 is identified as O(2)(-) ion while centre II with an axially symmetric g-tensor with principal values g(parallel to) = 19698 and g(perpendicular to) = 1 9653 is assigned to an F(+) centre (singly ionized oxygen vacancy) An additional defect centre is observed during thermal annealing experiments and this centre (assigned to F(+) centre) seems to originate from an F centre (oxygen vacancy with two electrons) The F centre and also the F+ centre appear to correlate with the observed high temperature TSL peak in LaMgAl(11)O(19) Tb phosphor (C) 2010 Elsevier Masson SAS All rights reserved

An efficient reddish orange emission MgSrAl(10)O(17):Sm(3+) phosphor was prepared by the combustion method. The phosphor has been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis measurements. Photoluminescence spectrum revealed that samarium ions are present in trivalent oxidation states. The phosphor exhibits two thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) peaks at 210 degrees C and 450 degrees C. Electron spin resonance studies were carried out to identify the defect centres responsible for the TSL process in MgSrAl(10)O(17):Sm(3+) phosphor. Three defect centres have been identified in irradiated phosphor and these centres are tentatively assigned to an O(-) ion and F(+) centres. O(-) ion (hole centre) correlates with the 210 degrees C TSL peak while one of the F+ centres (electron centre) appears to relate to the 450 degrees C TSL peak. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. In the present work, the trivalent and hexavalent chromium phytoaccumulation by three living free floating aquatic macrophytes Salvinia auriculata, Pistia stratiotes, and Eicchornia crassipes was investigated in greenhouse. These plants were grown in hydroponic solutions supplied with non-toxic Cr3+ and Cr6+ chromium concentrations, performing six collections of nutrient media and plants in time from a batch system. The total chromium concentrations into Cr-doped hydroponic media and dry roots and aerial parts were assayed, by using the Synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence technique. The aquatic plant-based chromium removal data were described by using a nonstructural kinetic model, obtaining different bioaccumulation rate, ranging from 0.015 to 0.837 1 mg(-1) d(-1). The Cr3+ removal efficiency was about 90%, 50%, and 90% for the E. crassipes, P. stratiotes, and S. auriculata, respectively; while it was rather different for Cr6+ one, with values about 50%, 70%, and 90% for the E. crassipes, P. stratiotes, and S. auriculata.

Introduction: This study prospectively accessed the immune response to the inactivated influenza vaccine in renal transplant recipients receiving either azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil (MMF). Side effects were investigated. Methods: Sixty-nine patients received one dose of inactivated trivalent influenza vaccine. Antihemagglutinin (HI) antibody response against each strain was measured before and one to six months after vaccination. Results: Geometric mean HI antibody titers for H1N1 and H3N2 strains increased from 2.57 and 2.44 to 13.45 (p = 0.001) and 7.20 (p < 0.001), respectively. Pre- and post-vaccination protection rates for H1N1 and H3N2 increased from 8.7% to 49.3% (p < 0.001); and 36.3% (p < 0.001) and seroconversion rates were 36% and 25.3%, respectively. There was no response to influenza B. The use of MMF reduced the H1N1 and H3N2 protection rates and the seroconversion rate for the H1N1 strain when compared with the use of azathioprine, and subjects transplanted less than 87 months also had inferior antibody response. Adverse events were mild and there were no change on renal function post-vaccination. Conclusion: Renal transplant patients vaccinated against influenza responded with antibody production for in. uenza A virus strains, but not for in. uenza B. Use of MMF and shorter time from transplantation decreased the immune response to the vaccine.

New lanthanide complexes with benzeneseleninic (ABSe) and 4-chloro-benzeneseleninic (ABSeCl) acids have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, infrared and UV-visible spectroscopies. The emission spectra of the trivalent europium complexes presented the typical electronic (5)D(0) -> (7)F(j) transitions of the ion (J = 0-4). The ground-state geometries of the europium complexes have been calculated by using the Sparkle/AM1 model. From these results, the 4f-4f intensity parameters and energies of the ligand singlet and triplet excited states have been obtained. The lower emission quantum yield for the [Eu(ABSe)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) compound, as compared to the [Eu(Al(3)SeCl)(3)(H(2)O)(2)] one, can be associated to the higher numbers of water molecules, in the first and second coordination spheres, that contribute to the luminescence quenching. The [Eu(Al(3)Se)(3)(H(2)O)(2)](H(2)O)(2) complex presents an intermediate state whose energy difference with respect to the first excited singlet state is resonant with three phonons from the water molecules, favouring a multiphonon relaxation process from the singlet state followed by a fast internal conversion process; this effect is less pronounced in the complex with the ABSeCl ligand. The luminescence decay curves of the gadolinium complexes indicate that the level responsible for the intramolecular energy transfer process has a triplet character for both compounds. The nephelauxetic effect in these compounds was investigated under the light of a recently proposed covalency scale based on the concept of overlap polarizability of the chemical bond. In this paper the synthesis, photo luminescence and electroluminescence investigation of the novel tetrakis beta-diketonate of rare-earth complexes such as M[Eu(dbM)(4)] and M[Tb(acac)(4)] with a variety of cationic ligands, M=Li(+), Na(+) and K(+) have been investigated. The emission spectra of the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) complexes displayed characteristic narrow bands arising from intraconfigurational transitions of trivalent rare-earth ions and exhibited red color emission for the Eu(3+) ion ((5)D(0) -> F(J), J=0-6) and green for the Tb(3+) ion ((5)D(4) -> (7)F(J), J = 6-0). The lack of the broaden emission bands arising from the ligands suggests the efficient intramolecular energy transfer from the dbm and acac ligands to Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) ions, respectively. In accordance to the expected, the values of PL quantum efficiency (eta) of the emitting (5)D(0) state of the tetrakis(beta-diketonate) complexes of Eu(3+) were higher compared with those tris-complexes. Therefore, organic electroluminescent (EL) devices were fabricated with the structure as follows: indium tin oxide (ITO)/hole transport layer (HTL) NPB or MTCD/emitter layer M[RE(beta-diketonate)(4)] complexes)/Aluminum (Al). All the films were deposited by thermal evaporation carried out in a high vacuum environment system. The OLED light emission was independent of driving voltage, indicating that the combination of charge carriers generates excitons within the M[RE(beta-diketonate)(4)] layers, and the energy is efficiently transferred to RE(3+) ion. As a best result, a pure red and green electroluminescent emission was observed from the Eu(3+) and Tb(3+) devices, confirmed by (X,Y) color coordinates. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
