Työn tarkoituksena oli kehittää kuuden vapausasteen liikesimulaattorialusta virtuaaliprototyypin avulla siten, että alustan dynamiikka mallinnetaan Adams-ohjelmistolla ja ohjaus- ja säätöpiiri Matlab Simulink:llä. Tarkoituksena oli tutkia dynaamisen mallin ja säätöteknisen mallin yhdistämistä ja niiden yhteen toimimista. Tarkoituksena oli myös selvittää tulevaisuudessa rakennettavan Stewart:n alustan mekaniikan mitat ja hydraulikomponenttien koot. Työssä tutkittiin alustan käyttäytymistä halutulla liikealueella, nopeuksia joita saavutetaan ja mekaanisia rajoitteita. Työn tuloksesta on tarkoitus rakentaa fyysinen prototyyppi liittyen KONSI-projektiin, jossa kehitetään satamanosturisimulaattori nosturiohjaajan koulutuksen tueksi. Malli tullaan kytkemään Teppo Lehtisen diplomityönä tehtyyn satamanosturi kontin simulointimalliin ja koko järjestelmän on tarkoitus toimia reaaliaikaisena.

Työn tarkoituksena oli selvittää kaupallisen dynamiikan simulointiohjelmiston (Adams) soveltuvuus siltanosturin mallintamiseen. Työn kohteena oli kaksipalkkinen siltanosturi, joka sijaitsi KCI:n tiloissa Hyvinkäällä. Nosturin jänneväli oli noin 19.5 metriä ja nostokyky 16 tonnia. Mallintamisessa keskityttiin nosturin dynamiikkaan sekä ohjausvoimiin nosturin kantopyörissä. Simulointitulokset verifioitiin mittauksin. Koska mallista haluttiin mahdollisimman yksinkertainen, mallinnettiin ainoastaan pääkannattajat ja köydet joustavina. Muut osat mallinnettiin jäykkinä. Yksinkertaisuuteen pyrittiin sen vuoksi, että mallia oli tarkoitus käyttää perustana komponenttikirjaston luomiseksi myöhempää käyttöä varten. Tuloksista todettiin mallin soveltuvan hyvin nosturin dynamiikan mallintamiseen. Mallista saatavat tulokset vastasivat hyvin mitattuja liikkeitä. Ohjausvoimia ei kuitenkaan saatu verifioitua. Käytetty mittausmenetelmä osoittautui sopimattomaksi.

Diplomityössä on kehitetty websovelluksena toteutettavan ilmastolaskuripalvelun hiilidioksidipäästöjen laskentamoduulit, joiden avulla toimistot ja yleisötapahtumat voivat arvioida omasta toiminnastaan syntyviä hiilidioksidipäästöjä sähkönkulutuksen, lämmönkulutuksen, matkustamisen, kuljetusten ja paperin kulutuksen osalta. Tavoitteena oli kehittää ilmastolaskurista mahdollisimman helppokäyttöinen ja kohderyhmälle hyödyllinen websovellus. Työn kirjallisuusosiossa käsitellään toimistojen ja yleisötapahtumien ympäristövaikutuksia etenkin ilmastonmuutoksen näkökulmasta. Toimistot ja yleisötapahtumat vaikuttavat ilmastonmuutokseen pääasiassa kiinteistöjen sähkön- ja lämmönkulutuksen sekä liikenteen energiankulutuksesta syntyvien hiilidioksidipäästöjen muodossa. Rakennusten energiankulutuksen ja liikenteen yhteys kansalliseen CO2-päästötaseeseen sekä päästöjenvähennystavoitteisiin on merkittävä päästökauppadirektiivin sovellusalan ulkopuolella. Lisäksi tarkastellaan paino- ja paperituotteiden elinkaaren aikaisia ympäristövaikutuksia energiankulutuksen kannalta, sillä paperi on toimistojen ja usein myös tapahtumien merkittävin yksittäinen materiaalivirta. Ilmastolaskuriin kuuluvien hiilidioksidipäästöjen laskentamoduulien kehittämisessä pyrittiin huomioimaan mahdollisimman pitkälle käyttäjien tarpeet ja tiedonsaantimahdollisuudet. Ilmastolaskuri suunniteltiin toimistojen ja yleisötapahtumien ympäristövaikutuksia käsittelevän tutkimustiedon, ilmastolaskuriprojektissa toteutetun esimarkkinakyselyn tulosten, käyttäjähaastatteluista saadun palautteen sekä keskeisesti suunnitteluprosessissa mukana olleen asiantuntijaryhmän antamien kehitysehdotusten perusteella. Työssä on esitetty ilmastolaskurisovelluksen laadulliset kriteerit, tekninen vaatimusmäärittely sekä hiilidioksidipäästöjen laskentaosuuden toteutussuunnitelma, joka sisältää laskentamoduulien käyttöliittymämallit sekä päästölaskentaan liittyvät hiilidioksidipäästökertoimet, oletusarvot, päästölaskentakaavat ja huomautukset.

Biological invasions can bring both the invader and native taxa into contact with novel parasites. As cane toads ( Rhinella marina ) have spread through Australia, they have encountered lungworms (Rhabdias hylae) that occur in native frogs. Field surveys suggest that these lungworms have not host-switched to toads. In our laboratory studies, R. hylae infected cane toads as readily as it infected native frogs, but failed to reach the lungs of the novel host (i.e., were killed by the toads' immune response). Plausibly, then, R. hylae might reduce the viability both of their native hosts (frogs, that can exhibit high parasite burdens) and cane toads (that must deal with infective larvae traveling through the host body). Our laboratory trials suggest, however, that the impacts of the parasite on infected anuran hosts (both frogs and toads) were minimal, with no significant decrements to host survival, activity, growth, or locomotor performance. Ironically, the lack of impact of the parasite on its native hosts appears to be an outcome of co-evolution (frogs tolerate the lungworm), whereas the lack of impact on the novel host is due to a lack of co-evolution (toads can recognize and eliminate the lungworm).

Ovikoneistot ovat tulleet ihmisten arkeen helpottamaan jokapäiväistä elämää. Etenkin julkisissa rakennuksissa koneistot ovat yleistyneet. Ovikoneistoja käytetään erityisesti siellä, missä ovista kulkevien ihmisten määrä on suurimmillaan. Tämän vuoksi ovikoneistojen henkilöturvallisuus on erittäin tärkeää. Henkilöturvallisuuden takaaminen aiheuttaa paljon vaatimuksia koneistojen suunnittelulle. Tämän työn tavoitteena on tutustua Saksassa voimassa oleviin kääntöovikoneistoja koskeviin määräyksiin sekä ennakoida tulevaisuudessa julkaistavan eurooppalaisen standardin vaikutuksia ovikoneistoille. Työ on rajattu koskemaan ainoastaan kääntöovikoneistoja. Muut oviympäristön laitteet on rajattu tarkemman tarkastelun ulkopuolelle. Työssä luodaan katsaus oviympäristöihin ja niissä käytettyihin laitteisiin ja standardeihin, jotka koskevat ovikoneistojen suunnittelua. Tämän lisäksi keskitytään tarkemmin Deutsches Institut für Normung:n (DIN) 18650 -standardiin. Lisäksi arvioidaan erään ovikoneiston standardinmukaisuutta, sekä esitetään ratkaisuvaihtoehtoja standardinmukaisuuden toteuttamiseksi.

In this research work, the results of an investigation dealing with welding of sheet metals with diverse air gap using FastROOT modified short arc welding method and short circuit MAG welding processes have been presented. Welding runs were made under different conditions and, during each run, the different process parameters were continuously monitored. It was found that maximum welding speed and less HAZ are reached under specific welding conditions with FastROOT method with the emphasis on arc stability. Welding results show that modified short arc exhibits a higher electrode melting coefficient and with virtually spatter free droplet transition. By adjusting the short circuit duration the penetration can be controlled with only a small change in electrode deposition. Furthermore, by mixing pulsed MIG welding with modified arc welding the working envelope of the process is greatly extended allowing thicker material sections to be welded with improved weld bead aesthetics. FastROOT is a modified short arc welding process using mechanized or automated welding process based on dip transfer welding, characterized by controlled material deposition during the short circuit of the wire electrode to the workpiece.

Power electronic converter drives use, for the sake of high efficiency, pulse-width modulation that results in sequences of high-voltage high-frequency steep-edged pulses. Such a signal contains a set of high harmonics not required for control purposes. Harmonics cause reflections in the cable between the motor and the inverter leading to faster winding insulation ageing. Bearing failures and problems with electromagnetic compatibility may also result. Electrical du/dt filters provide an effective solution to problems caused by pulse-width modulation, thereby increasing the performance and service life of the electrical machines. It is shown that RLC filters effectively decrease the reflection phenomena in the cable. Improved (simple, but effective) solutions are found for both differential- and common-mode signals; these solutions use a galvanic connection between the RLC filter star point and the converter DC link. Foil chokes and film capacitors are among the most widely used components in high-power applications. In actual applications they can be placed in different parts of the cabinet. This fact complicates the arrangement of the cabinet and decreases the reliability of the system. In addition, the inductances of connection wires may prevent filtration at high frequencies. This thesis introduces a new hybrid LC filter that uses a natural capacitance between the turns of the foil choke based on integration of an auxiliary layer into it. The main idea of the hybrid LC filter results from the fact that both the foil choke and the film capacitors have the same roll structure. Moreover, the capacitance between the turns (“intra capacitance”) of the foil inductors is the reason for the deterioration of their properties at high frequencies. It is shown that the proposed filter has a natural cancellation of the intra capacitance. A hybrid LC filter may contain two or more foil layers isolated from each other and coiled on a core. The core material can be iron or even air as in the filter considered in this work. One of the foils, called the main foil, can be placed between the inverter and the motor cable. Other ones, called auxiliary foils, may be connected in star to create differential-mode noise paths, and then coupled to the DC link midpoint to guarantee a traveling path, especially for the common-mode currents. This way, there is a remarkable capacitance between the main foil and the auxiliary foil. Investigations showed that such a system can be described by a simple equivalent LC filter in a wide range of frequencies. Because of its simple hybrid construction, the proposed LC filter can be a cost-effective and competitive solution for modern power drives. In the thesis, the application field of the proposed filter is considered and determined. The basics of hybrid LC filter design are developed further. High-frequency behaviour of the proposed filter is analysed by simulations. Finally, the thesis presents experimental data proving that the hybrid LC filter can be used for du/dt of PWM pulses and reduction of common-mode currents.

The speed of traveling fronts for a two-dimensional model of a delayed reactiondispersal process is derived analytically and from simulations of molecular dynamics. We show that the one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) versions of a given kernel do not yield always the same speed. It is also shown that the speeds of time-delayed fronts may be higher than those predicted by the corresponding non-delayed models. This result is shown for systems with peaked dispersal kernels which lead to ballistic transport

Vivim en una era digital on cada vegada més les persones estem connectades a la xarxa, ja sigui a través del mòbil, ordinadors o altres dispositius. Actualment internet és un gran aparador i des de fa temps, les empreses han vist en aquest una manera de treure’n profit. És per això, junt amb el seu baix cost, que fa que qualsevol empresa disposi del seu propi espai a la xarxa. D’aquestes idees sorgeix el projecte de fer la web per AutoSuministres Motor. La principal funció de la web es donar-se a conèixer i ensenyar els seus productes, que en aquest cas, són autocaravanes i caravanes. Tot i així, la pàgina web contindrà un espai de reportatges on l’usuari podrà conèixer més a fons un model concret d’autocaravana o caravana i on també podrà demanar més informació mitjançant un formulari de contacte. Per tant, la pàgina web serà totalment administrable perquè els comercials puguin introduir els vehicles corresponents i l’usuari final pugui consultarlos correctament d’una manera fàcil i senzilla. Per tal de dur a terme aquesta web s’ha tingut en compte utilitzar eines de programació de distribució lliure com és el llenguatge PHP, la base de dades MySQL i jQuery.

This master’s thesis was done for Andritz Inc. Atlanta Georgia. The purpose of the thesis was to develop a new trolley for a small portal log yard crane. In the beginning of the thesis the basic principles of the systematic design processes have been described, along which the design work of the trolley has proceeded. The second literature part consists of the design and dimensioning of the welded steel structures under fatigue loading. The design work of the trolley consists of the engineering and the selection of the mechanical components and the design of the load carrying structure for the trolley. The realization of the steel structure of the trolley is based on the fatigue and static dimensioning. The fatigue dimensioning is grounded in the life expectations estimated for the trolley and the static dimensioning is based on the CMAA guidelines. The computer aided element method was utilized in the design of the steel structure. The effective notch method and the hot spot method were used in the fatigue calculations. The trolley structure was carried out by using the sheet metal parts in order to manufacture the structure as effective and low cost way as possible. The corner stone of the dimensioning of the trolley structure was the utilization of the open profiles made of welded or cold formed sheet metals, which provide better weldability, weld inspection, access for repairs and corrosion protection. As a last part of the thesis a new trolley traveling system was developed. The distribution of the wheel loads of the trolley bogies on the main girder was also studied, which led to an innovative suspension arrangement between the trolley leg and the bogie. The new bogie solution increases the service life of the main girder of the crane and improves the stability of the bogies. The outcome of the thesis is an excellent trolley structure from the weight and the service life point of view.

The worlds’ population is increasing and cities have become more crowded with people and vehicles. Communities in the fringe of metropolitans’ increase the traffic done with private cars, but also increase the need for public transportation. People have typically needs traveling to work located in city centers during the morning time, and return to suburbs in the afternoon or evening. Rail based passenger transport is environmentally friendly transport mode with high capacity to transport large volume of people. Railways have been regulated markets with national incumbent having monopoly position. Opening the market for competition is believed to have a positive effect by increasing the efficiency of the industry. National passenger railway market is opened for competition only in few countries, where as international traffic in EU countries was deregulated in 2010. The objective of this study is to examine the passenger railway market of three North European countries, Sweden, Denmark and Estonia. The interest was also to get an understanding of the current situation and how the deregulation has proceeded. Theory of deregulation is unfolded with literature analyses and empirical part of the study is constructed from two parts. Customer satisfaction survey was chosen as a method to collect real life experiences from the passengers and measure their knowledge of the market situation and possible changes appeared. Interviews of experts from the industry and labor unions give more insights and able better understanding for example of social consequences caused from opening the market for competition. Expert interviews were conducted by using semi-structured theme interview. Based on the results of this study, deregulation has proceeded quite differently in the three countries researched. Sweden is the most advanced country, where the passenger railway market is open for new entrants. Denmark and Estonia are lagging behind. Opening the market is considered positive among passengers and most of the experts interviewed. Common for the interviews were the labour unions negative perspective concerning deregulation. Despite the fact deregulation is considered positive among the respondents of the customer satisfaction survey, they could not name railway undertakings operating in their country. Generally respondents were satisfied with the commuter trains. Ticket price, punctuality of trains and itinerary affect the most to customer satisfaction.

Tourism is one of the biggest industry branches with billions of tourists traveling every year around the world. Therefore, solutions providing tourist information have to be up to date with both changes in the industry and the world’s technological progress. The aim of this thesis is to present a design and a prototype of a tourist mobile service which is individual-oriented, cost-free for the end user, and secure. On the information providers’ side, the solution is implemented as a Webbased database. The end users access the information through a Bluetooth application on their mobile devices. The Bluetooth-based solution allows to avoid any costs for the end users, that is tourists. The study shows that, even with small data transfers, the tourists could save significantly when compared to possible roaming charges for data transfer. Also, the proposed mobile service is not intrusive, as it is provided through an application installed by tourists voluntarily on their mobile devices. Through design and implementation this work shows that it is possible to build a system which can be used to provide information services to tourists through mobile phones. The work achieved a successful ongoing synchronization between the client and the server databases. Implementation and usage were limited to smart phones only, as they provide better technological support for the solution having features like maps, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Databases. Moreover, the design of this system shows how Bluetooth technology can be used effectively as a means of communication while minimizing its shortcomings and risks, such as security, by bypassing Bluetooth server service discovery protocol (SDP) and connecting directly to the device. Apart from showing the design and implementation of the end-user costfree mobile information service, the results of this work also highlight the possible business opportunities to the provider of the service.

Etelä-Karjala on viime vuosina saanut osakseen merkittävää kasvua venäläisistä matkailijoista. Tax free -myynti on Lappeenrannassa Suomen toiseksi suurinta, heti Helsingin jälkeen. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena oli selvittää, mitkä muuttujat vaikuttavat venäläisten ostoskäyttäytymiseen Etelä-Karjalan alueella. Muuttujien selvittyä niiden pohjalta rakennettiin neljä skenaariota, jotka kuvaavat vuoden 2014 tilannetta liittyen venäläisten matkailuun Etelä-Karjalassa. Työssä tutkittiin myös tax free -myyntitilastoja, etsien muutoksia ja trendejä venäläisten ostoskäyttäytymisessä. Tax free -myynnissä ja venäläisten yöpymismäärissä oli havaittavissa useita selviä ja toistuvia trendejä. Esimerkiksi ruokaa myydään vähemmän vuoden lopussa suhteessa käyttötavaroihin. Yöpymismäärät olivat selvästi korkeampia loppukesästä ja vuoden vaihteessa. Venäläisten matkailu Etelä-Karjalaan on kasvanut voimakkaasti vuoden 2005 jälkeen. Työssä havaittiin, että yksi merkittävin tekijä tälle on ruplan reaalinen vahvistuminen, joka alkoi vuoden 2005 aikana. Tämän jälkeen kasvu jatkui erittäin vahvana aina vuonna 2008 alkaneeseen taantumaan asti. Toinen merkittävä seikka, jonka vuoksi venäläiset ostosmatkailijat saapuvat Suomeen ostoksille, on tuotteiden ja palveluiden laatu. Näiden kahden asian pohjalta rakennettiin nelikenttämatriisi, jonka tuloksena oli neljä skenaariota.

Permanent magnet generators (PMG) represent the cutting edge technology in modern wind mills. The efficiency remains high (over 90%) at partial loads. To improve the machine efficiency even further, every aspect of machine losses has to be analyzed. Additional losses are often given as a certain percentage without providing any detailed information about the actual calculation process; meanwhile, there are many design-dependent losses that have an effect on the total amount of additional losses and that have to be taken into consideration. Additional losses are most often eddy current losses in different parts of the machine. These losses are usually difficult to calculate in the design process. In this doctoral thesis, some additional losses are identified and modeled. Further, suggestions on how to minimize the losses are given. Iron losses can differ significantly between the measured no-load values and the loss values under load. In addition, with embedded magnet rotors, the quadrature-axis armature reaction adds losses to the stator iron by manipulating the harmonic content of the flux. It was, therefore, re-evaluated that in salient pole machines, to minimize the losses and the loss difference between the no-load and load operation, the flux density has to be kept below 1.5 T in the stator yoke, which is the traditional guideline for machine designers. Eddy current losses may occur in the end-winding area and in the support structure of the machine, that is, in the finger plate and the clamping ring. With construction steel, these losses account for 0.08% of the input power of the machine. These losses can be reduced almost to zero by using nonmagnetic stainless steel. In addition, the machine housing may be subjected to eddy current losses if the flux density exceeds 1.5 T in the stator yoke. Winding losses can rise rapidly when high frequencies and 10–15 mm high conductors are used. In general, minimizing the winding losses is simple. For example, it can be done by dividing the conductor into transposed subconductors. However, this comes with the expense of an increase in the DC resistance. In the doctoral thesis, a new method is presented to minimize the winding losses by applying a litz wire with noninsulated strands. The construction is the same as in a normal litz wire but the insulation between the subconductors has been left out. The idea is that the connection is kept weak to prevent harmful eddy currents from flowing. Moreover, the analytical solution for calculating the AC resistance factor of the litz-wire is supplemented by including an end-winding resistance in the analytical solution. A simple measurement device is developed to measure the AC resistance in the windings. In the case of a litz-wire with originally noninsulated strands, vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) is used to insulate the subconductors. In one of the two cases studied, the VPI affected the AC resistance factor, but in the other case, it did not have any effect. However, more research is needed to determine the effect of the VPI on litz-wire with noninsulated strands. An empirical model is developed to calculate the AC resistance factor of a single-layer formwound winding. The model includes the end-winding length and the number of strands and turns. The end winding includes the circulating current (eddy currents that are traveling through the whole winding between parallel strands) and the main current. The end-winding length also affects the total AC resistance factor.

The Travel and Tourism field is undergoing changes due to the rapid development of information technology and digital services. Online travel has profoundly changed the way travel and tourism organizations interact with their customers. Mobile technology such as mobile services for pocket devices (e.g. mobile phones) has the potential to take this development even further. Nevertheless, many issues have been highlighted since the early days of mobile services development (e.g. the lack of relevance, ease of use of many services). However, the wide adoption of smartphones and the mobile Internet in many countries as well as the formation of so-called ecosystems between vendors of mobile technology indicate that many of these issues have been overcome. Also when looking at the numbers of downloaded applications related to travel in application stores like Google Play, it seems obvious that mobile travel and tourism services are adopted and used by many individuals. However, as business is expected to start booming in the mobile era, many issues have a tendency to be overlooked. Travelers are generally on the go and thus services that work effectively in mobile settings (e.g. during a trip) are essential. Hence, the individuals’ perceived drivers and barriers to use mobile travel and tourism services in on-site or during trip settings seem particularly valuable to understand; thus this is one primary aim of the thesis. We are, however, also interested in understanding different types of mobile travel service users. Individuals may indeed be very different in their propensity to adopt and use technology based innovations (services). Research is also switching more from investigating issues of mobile service development to understanding individuals’ usage patterns of mobile services. But designing new mobile services may be a complex matter from a service provider perspective. Hence, our secondary aim is to provide insights into drivers and barriers of mobile travel and tourism service development from a holistic business model perspective. To accomplish the research objectives seven different studies have been conducted over a time period from 2002 – 2013. The studies are founded on and contribute to theories within diffusion of innovations, technology acceptance, value creation, user experience and business model development. Several different research methods are utilized: surveys, field and laboratory experiments and action research. The findings suggest that a successful mobile travel and tourism service is a service which supports one or several mobile motives (needs) of individuals such as spontaneous needs, time-critical arrangements, efficiency ambitions, mobility related needs (location features) and entertainment needs. The service could be customized to support travelers’ style of traveling (e.g. organized travel or independent travel) and should be easy to use, especially easy to take into use (access, install and learn) during a trip, without causing security concerns and/or financial risks for the user. In fact, the findings suggest that the most prominent barrier to the use of mobile travel and tourism services during a trip is an individual’s perceived financial cost (entry costs and usage costs). It should, however, be noted that regulations are put in place in the EU regarding data roaming prices between European countries and national telecom operators are starting to see ‘international data subscriptions’ as a sales advantage (e.g. Finnish Sonera provides a data subscription in the Baltic and Nordic region at the same price as in Finland), which will enhance the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services also in international contexts. In order to speed up the adoption rate travel service providers could consider e.g. more local initiatives of free Wi-Fi networks, development of services that can be used, at least to some extent, in an offline mode (do not require costly network access during a trip) and cooperation with telecom operators (e.g. lower usage costs for travelers who use specific mobile services or travel with specific vendors). Furthermore, based on a developed framework for user experience of mobile trip arrangements, the results show that a well-designed mobile site and/or native application, which preferably supports integration with other mobile services, is a must for true mobile presence. In fact, travel service providers who want to build a relationship with their customers need to consider a downloadable native application, but in order to be found through the mobile channel and make contact with potential new customers, a mobile website should be available. Moreover, we have made a first attempt with cluster analysis to identify user categories of mobile services in a travel and tourism context. The following four categories were identified: info-seekers, checkers, bookers and all-rounders. For example “all-rounders”, represented primarily by individuals who use their pocket device for almost any of the investigated mobile travel services, constituted primarily of 23 to 50 year old males with high travel frequency and great online experience. The results also indicate that travel service providers will increasingly become multi-channel providers. To manage multiple online channels, closely integrated and hybrid online platforms for different devices, supporting all steps in a traveler process should be considered. It could be useful for travel service providers to focus more on developing browser-based mobile services (HTML5-solutions) than native applications that work only with specific operating systems and for specific devices. Based on an action research study and utilizing a holistic business model framework called STOF we found that HTML5 as an emerging platform, at least for now, has some limitations regarding the development of the user experience and monetizing the application. In fact, a native application store (e.g. Google Play) may be a key mediator in the adoption of mobile travel and tourism services both from a traveler and a service provider perspective.
