The effect of additivity pretraining on blocking has been taken as evidence for a reasoning account of human and animal causal learning. If inferential reasoning underpins this effect, then developmental differences in the magnitude of this effect in children would be expected. Experiment 1 examined cue competition effects in children's (4- to 5-year-olds and 6- to 7-year-olds) causal learning using a new paradigm analogous to the food allergy task used in studies of human adult causal learning. Blocking was stronger in the older than the younger children, and additivity pretraining only affected blocking in the older group. Unovershadowing was not affected by age or by pretraining. In experiment 2, levels of blocking were found to be correlated with the ability to answer questions that required children to reason about additivity. Competition has become the mantra for survival in a globalised world where meaningful existence is fraught with demands, which go beyond the material to the immaterial ‘byte-size’. This has been exemplified by our obsession with illusions of immediate fame and fortune. This paper contextualises and extends the debate about the role of competition in general. Here the four major myths of competition are explored and deconstructed, from a Darwinian perspective to a more demonstrably engaged perspective on ‘capabilities’ (Sen, 1999). The second section deals particularly with the key debates, theories that influenced Tsunesaburo Makiguchi’s seminal ideas of ‘humanitarian competition’ in 1903. The final part of the paper seeks to decipher the relevance of the key ideas of ‘humanitarian competition’ as proposed by Dr Daisaku Ikeda in his 2009 peace proposal. Here the transition from competition to cooperation is explored by tying together the key principles of global coexistence enunciated by both Makiguchi and Ikeda in the context of expanding spiritual influence by the forces of culture, morality and virtue. To engage with humanitarian competition calls for a major shift from hard power to soft power, from subordination to one of engagement. In other words this concept advances the Buddhist principle of peaceful co-existence, or Panchsheel, as a norm for human behaviour of love, kindness, sacrifice and peace through cooperation, where equality and mutual benefit are critical. Humanitarian competition provides the essential framework to establish a new world order as highlighted by both Makiguchi and Ikeda.

Mechanisms determining the ability of individuals to recognize their kin can be broadly divided into those prenatally determined and those postnatally determined. The role of both of these possibilities was examined in an investigation of sibling recognition in the rat (Rattus norvegicus). Rat pups were tested for their preference for ‘siblings’, (either littermates and genetic siblings—natural siblings; just littermates—any recognition due to postnatal factors; or just genetic siblings—any recognition due to prenatal factors) as opposed to unfamiliar age-mates between the ages of 6 and 22 days, and also for their ability to detect conspecific odour. The results indicate that rats can recognize their siblings (Experiment V) and this can be achieved solely postnatally (Experiments I, VI), or solely prenatally (Experiments II, VII). Other results demonstrated that rats, as early as day 2, and probably earlier, can detect and respond preferentially to conspecific odours (Experiments III, IV and VIII). The possibilities of how these mechanisms, both postnatal and prenatal, function in the acquisition of sibling recognition are discussed. This is the first study in which individuals separated from all genetic relations postnatally are shown to posses the ability to recognize kin.
