La fixation biologique d’azote (réduction du N2 atmosphérique, non biodisponible, en ammonium (NH3) bioassimilable) est catalysée par la métalloenzyme nitrogénase. Cette enzyme existe sous trois isoformes chez la bactérie du sol Azotobacter vinelandii: les nitrogénases au molybdène (Mo), au vanadium (V) et au fer (Fe). L’acquisition des métaux cofacteurs constitue un paramètre d’intérêt majeur car Mo et V sont fortement complexés à la matrice (matière organique et oxydes) ce qui peut limiter leur disponibilité. Ces travaux ont montré que la présence d’acide tannique et d’oxydes de fer entraîne des changements majeurs dans la gestion des métaux cofacteurs (Mo et V) chez A. vinelandii. Les stratégies d’acquisition des métaux cofacteurs sont fortement modifiées en présence de ces complexants avec (i) un changement important de la quantité des metallophores produits ainsi que (ii) une acquisition simultanée de Mo et V dans des conditions traditionnellement considérées comme non limitantes en Mo. Ceci se traduit par un changement important dans l’utilisation des nitrogénases; les niveaux de transcrits élevés des gènes nifD et vnfD, spécifiques des nitrogénases au Mo et au V respectivement, suggèrent une utilisation simultanée de ces isoenzymes pour assurer la fixation d’azote. Ce projet a permis de mettre en évidence que face à un stress métallique, l’utilisation des isoformes de la nitrogénase par A. vinelandii est un processus plus versatile que précédemment décrit et que le coût d’acquisition des métaux dans ces conditions constitue un facteur important de la régulation de l’activité des nitrogénases. Ceci suggère que les nitrogénases alternatives pourraient contribuer à la fixation d’azote de manière plus importante que présentement admis.

Les concentrations de métaux lourds retrouvées dans les sols augmentent considérablement depuis la révolution industrielle et s’accumulent quotidiennement dans la biosphère. Ces composés métalliques persisteront pendant plusieurs années au niveau des différents écosystèmes affectés et voyageront dans les chaînes alimentaires par bioaccumulation. Les activités humaines, telle que l’industrie minière contribuent activement à cette problématique environnementale. En effet, l’excavation minière perturbe la roche-mère et favorise l’oxydation des métaux lourds sulfurés qui, lentement, produiront de l’acide sulfurique. Cette acidification peut mobiliser les éléments métalliques stables en condition neutre ou alcaline. Ces phénomènes induisent la formation du drainage minier acide (DMA) qui peut contaminer les cours d’eau ou les nappes phréatiques à proximité. Plusieurs mines sont situées en Abitibi-Témiscamingue en raison de l’abondance de divers minerais dans la roche mère tels que l’or. Une importante quantité de déchets industriels est produite lors de l’excavation du minerai, dont les résidus miniers entreposés dans des bassins de rétention extérieurs. Ces bassins prennent de l’expansion quotidiennement autour du site minier substituant la place de la végétation saine et des territoires. Une mise en végétation des sites miniers du Québec est exigée depuis 1995 afin de redonner une apparence naturelle aux sites et limiter le phénomène d’érosion. Depuis 2013, un plan de réaménagement et de restauration des sites exploités est obligatoire selon la loi sur les mines. Ces bassins seront donc ciblés pour effectuer des essais de revégétalisation par l’entremise de plantes actinorhiziennes. Les plantes actinorhiziennes sont des végétaux robustes pouvant coloniser nombreux habitats perturbés et hostiles. L’aulne est une plante actinorhizienne pouvant établir une relation symbiotique avec l’actinobactérie fixatrice d’azote du genre Frankia. La symbiose actinorhizienne est une interaction équitablement profitable entre la plante et la bactérie. Cette symbiose repose sur la capacité de la bactérie à transformer, au niveau des nodules, l’azote atmosphérique en ammonium assimilable grâce à une enzyme spécifique, la nitrogénase. Lorsque la symbiose est bien établie, elle donnera un avantage significatif aux plantes pour leur développement et leur croissance, et ce, même dans un substrat pauvre en nutriments ou contaminé. En effet, la symbiose actinorhizienne permet d’améliorer la structure physicochimique d’un sol et de l’enrichir en azote grâce à la fixation de l’azote atmosphérique. Dans la région de l’Abitibi-Témiscamingue, la mine Doyon est une mine d’or qui détient des sols acidogènes contenant des traces non négligeables de métaux lourds. Ce projet de recherche en microbiologie environnementale avait comme objectif principal d’évaluer la capacité des aulnes rugueux et des aulnes crispés à coloniser des résidus miniers acidogènes aurifères (concentrations différentes de 0 %, 35 %, 65 % et 100 %) avec ou sans l’aide de Frankia. La dispersion des contaminants par les feuilles a aussi été étudiée afin d’évaluer le risque environnemental de l’utilisation des aulnes sur le terrain à des fins de revégétalisation. Les objectifs préliminaires avaient comme but d’évaluer la résistance, de manière individuelle, de la souche ACN10a du genre Frankia (par extrait aqueux) puis des espèces d’aulne aux résidus miniers non stérilisés. Par le fait même, la microflore des résidus miniers a été étudiée dans le but d’isoler des espèces symbiotiques d’endophytes écoadaptées aux conditions arides du site minier Doyon. Concernant les objectifs préliminaires, les résultats ont démontré que la souche ACN10a résiste bien jusqu’à 35 % d’extrait aqueux de résidus miniers de la mine Doyon. Pour les concentrations supérieures à 50 %, Frankia (souche ACN10a) a démontré une respiration cellulaire et des concentrations protéiques décroissantes en raison de la présence d’éléments toxiques biodisponibles dans l’extrait aqueux. Par ailleurs, les aulnes rugueux et crispés ont démontré une tolérance jusqu’à la concentration de 35 % de résidus miniers non stérilisés sans la présence de Frankia. Par la suite, les résultats d’isolement n’ont pas démontré la capacité des aulnes à recruter des bactéries symbiotiques à partir des résidus miniers de la mine Doyon. Concernant l’objectif principal, les résultats ont démontré que l’aulne rugueux résiste mieux que l’aulne crispé jusqu’aux concentrations de 35 % de résidus miniers lorsqu’inoculés en manifestant une meilleure biomasse sèche totale, une plus grande concentration de chlorophylle dans les feuilles et un plus grand nombre spécifique de nodules. L’établissement symbiotique a été affecté par la présence des résidus miniers acidogène révélant que le nombre de site d’infection racinaire diminuait en fonction des concentrations de résidus miniers croissantes (0 %, 35 %, 65 % et 100 %). Ensuite, une analyse des éléments chimiques des feuilles a démontré que le transfert des métaux lourds des résidus miniers vers les feuilles était minime. Les plantes révélant de hautes teneurs en métaux lourds dans leurs feuilles ont développé par le fait même, une faible biomasse aérienne limitant ainsi la dispersion de contaminants lors de la perte des feuilles à l’automne. Le modèle expérimental aulne-Frankia possédait un seuil de tolérance visible à la concentration de 35 % de résidus miniers acidogènes aurifères de la mine Doyon. De plus, la présence de la symbiose actinorhizienne a modulé la distribution de certains éléments chimiques dans les feuilles en comparaison avec les aulnes non-inoculés (molybdène, nickel). Puis, une similarité a été notée dans la composition chimique des feuilles d’aulnes inoculés s’étant développés dans 0 % (témoin positif) et 35 % de résidus miniers.

Bologna-type sausages were produced with 50% of their pork back-fat content replaced with gels elaborated with different ratios of pork skin, water, and amorphous cellulose (1:1:0, 1:1:0.1, 1:1:0.2, 1:1:0.3, and 1:1:0.4). The impact of such replacement on the physico-chemical characteristics and the consumer sensory profiling was evaluated. The modified treatments had 42% less fat, 18% more protein, and 8% more moisture than the control group. Treatments with amorphous cellulose had a lower cooking loss and higher emulsion stability. High amorphous cellulose content (1:1:0.3 and 1:1:0.4) increased hardness, gumminess, and chewiness. The gel formulated with the ratio of 1:1:0.2 (pork skin: water: amorphous cellulose gel) provided a sensory sensation similar to that provided by fat and allowed products of good acceptance to be obtained. Therefore, a combination of pork skin and amorphous cellulose is useful in improving technological quality and producing healthier and sensory acceptable bologna-type sausages.

Lingual thyroid gland is a rare clinical entity. The presence of an ectopic thyroid gland located at the base of the tongue may be presented with symptoms like dysphagia, dysphonia, and upper airway obstruction. We are introducing a case of an 8-year-old girl who had lingual thyroid that presented dysphagia and foreign body sensation in the throat. The diagnostic was reached with clinical examination, thyroid scintigraphy with Tc(99m) and ultrasound. A laryngoscopy was performed which confirmed a spherical mass at base of tongue. Investigation should include thyroid function tests. In this case we observed subclinical hypothyroidism. There are different types of surgical approaches for the treatment of this condition; however, the treatment with Levothyroxine Sodium allowed the stabilization of TSH levels and clinical improvement of symptoms in a follow-up of 2 years.

This study investigated the influence of cervical preflaring with different rotary instruments on determination of the initial apical file (IAF) in mesiobuccal roots of mandibular molars. Fifty human mandibular molars whose mesial roots presented two clearly separated apical foramens (mesiobuccal and mesiolingual) were used. After standard access opening and removal of pulp tissue, the working length (WL) was determined at 1 mm short of the root apex. Five groups (n=10) were formed at random, according to the type of instrument used for cervical preflaring. In group 1, the size of the IAF was determined without preflaring of the cervical and middle root canal thirds. In groups 2 to 5, preflaring was performed with Gates-Glidden drills, ProTaper instruments, EndoFlare instruments and LA Axxes burs, respectively. Canals were sized manually with K-files, starting with size 08 K-files, inserted passively up to the WL. File sizes were increased until a binding sensation was felt at the WL and the size of the file was recorded. The instrument corresponding to the IAF was fixed into the canal at the WL with methylcyanoacrylate. The teeth were then sectioned transversally 1 mm short of the apex, with the IAF in position. Cross-sections of the WL region were examined under scanning electron microscopy and the discrepancies between canal diameter and the diameter of IAF were calculated using the tool "rule" (FEG) of the microscope's proprietary software. The measurements (µm) were analyzed statistically by Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests at 5% significance level. There were statistically significant differences among the groups (p<0.05). The non-flared group had the greatest discrepancy (125.30 ± 51.54) and differed significantly from all flared groups (p<0.05). Cervical preflaring with LA Axxess burs produced the least discrepancies (55.10 ± 48.31), followed by EndoFlare instruments (68.20 ± 42.44), Gattes Glidden drills (68.90 ± 42.46) and ProTaper files (77.40 ± 73.19). However, no significant differences (p>0.05) were found among the rotary instruments. In conclusion, cervical preflaring improved IAF fitting to the canals at the WL in mesiobuccal roots of maxillary first molars. The rotary instruments evaluated in this study did not differ from each other regarding the discrepancies produced between the IAF size and canal diameter at the WL.

Current scientific knowledge provides clear evidence that alcohol-based mouthwashes can be beneficial in a daily oral health routine, including dental hygiene and plaque control. Several issues are worth discussing, in spite of the wealth of supporting evidence. Despite some undesirable effects to some people, like burning sensation, and some contraindications, like the use by infants, alcohol addicts and patients with mucosal injuries, there is no reason to avoid the use of alcohol-containing mouthwashes as long as they are used following proper guidance by dental professionals and the manufacturers' instructions. The alleged correlation between oral cancer and alcohol-based mouthrinses presents so little, weak, inconsistent and even contradictory evidence in the literature that any kind of risk warning to patients would be uncalled for. Antimicrobial mouthrinses are safe and effective in reducing plaque and gingivitis, and should be part of a comprehensive oral health care regimen that includes brushing, flossing and rinsing to prevent or minimize periodontal disease.

OBJETIVO: Investigar os sintomas vocais e sensações laríngeas dos trabalhadores de uma usina de álcool e açúcar expostos a ruído e/ou substâncias químicas. MÉTODOS: Participaram 289 trabalhadores de uma usina de álcool e açúcar distribuídos em cinco grupos expostos (I- ruído; II- ruído, óleo, graxa, derivação de petróleo; III- ruído, ácidos, sulfatos, cloretos, nitratos; IV- ruído, poeiras respiráveis e sílica livre cristalizada; V- óleo, graxa, derivação de petróleo) e um grupo controle que responderam o questionário Condições de Produção Vocal - Professor adaptado à categoria profissional. Os grupos foram comparados em relação aos sintomas vocais, sensações laríngeas, tabagismo e riscos físicos e químicos. Esta comparação foi realizada por meio de análise estatística. RESULTADOS: O sintoma vocal e a sensação laríngea mais relatados pelos trabalhadores foram voz grave e tosse com catarro, respectivamente. Considerando o risco físico no ambiente de trabalho, os grupos I e IV foram os que mais citaram presença de ruído. Devido à sua exposição, os mesmos aumentavam a intensidade da voz (Efeito de Lombard-Tarneaud) e, assim, mencionaram sintomas vocais. Em relação aos riscos químicos no ambiente ocupacional, o grupo IV foi o que mais referiu presença de poeira e fumaça, e estas eram compostas por poeiras respiráveis e sílica. Tais exposições ocasionam sintomas vocais e sensações laríngeas e, consequentemente, alterações vocais. CONCLUSÃO: Sintomas vocais e sensações laríngeas podem estar relacionados a atividade profissional em que haja exposição a riscos físicos e/ou químicos.

Background: Diabetic neuropathy leads to progressive loss of sensation, lower-limb distal muscle atrophy, autonomic impairment, and gait alterations that overload feet. This overload has been associated with plantar ulcers even with consistent daily use of shoes. We sought to investigate and compare the influence of diabetic neuropathy and plantar ulcers in the clinical history of diabetic neuropathic patients on plantar sensitivity, symptoms, and plantar pressure distribution during gait while patients wore their everyday shoes. Methods: Patients were categorized into three groups: a control group (CG; n = 15), diabetic patients with a history of neuropathic ulceration (DUG; n = 8), and diabetic patients without a history of ulceration (DG; n = 10). Plantar pressure variables were measured by Pedar System shoe insoles in five plantar regions during gait while patients wore their own shoes. Results: No statistical difference between neuropathic patients with and without a history of plantar ulcers was found in relation to symptoms, tactile sensitivity, and duration of diabetes. Diabetic patients without ulceration presented the lowest pressure-time integral under the heel (72.1 +/- 16.1 kPa x sec; P=.0456). Diabetic patients with a history of ulceration presented a higher pressure-time integral at the midfoot compared to patients in the control group (59.6 +/- 23.6 kPa x sec x 45.8 +/- 10.4 kPa x sec; P = .099), and at the lateral forefoot compared to diabetic patients without ulceration (70.9 +/- 17.7 kPa sec x 113.2 +/- 61.1 kPa x sec, P = .0193). Diabetic patients with ulceration also presented the lowest weight load under the hallux (0.06 +/- 0.02%, P = .0042). Conclusions: Although presenting a larger midfoot area, diabetic neuropathic patients presented greater pressure-time integrals and relative loads over this region. Diabetic patients with ulceration presented an altered dynamic plantar pressure pattern characterized by overload even when wearing daily shoes. Overload associated with a clinical history of plantar ulcers indicates future appearance of plantar ulcers. (J Am Podiatr Med Assoc 99(4): 285-294, 2009)

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on the treatment of burning mouth syndrome (BMS). In addition, the laser effect was compared on the different affected oral sites. Materials and Methods: Eleven subjects with a total of 25 sites (tongue, lower lip, upper lip, and palate) affected by a burning sensation were selected. The affected areas were irradiated once a week for three consecutive weeks with an infrared laser (lambda = 790 nm). The probe was kept in contact with the tissue, and the mucosal surface was scanned during the irradiation. The exposure time was calculated based on the fluence of 6 J/cm(2), the output power of 120 mW, and the area to be treated. Burning intensity was recorded through a visual analog scale before and after the treatment and at the 6-week follow-up. The percentage of the improvement in symptoms was also obtained. Results: Burning intensity at the end of the laser therapy was statistically lower than at the beginning (p < 0.01). Patients reported an 80.4% reduction in the intensity of symptoms after laser treatment. There was no statistical difference between the end of the treatment and the 6-week follow-up, except for the tongue site. Conclusion: Under the investigated parameters, infrared LLLT proved to be a valuable alternative for BMS treatment, providing a significant and lasting reduction in symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: To determine somesthetic, olfactory, gustative and salivary abnormalities in patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS), idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (ITN) and trigeminal postherpetic neuralgia (PHN). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Twenty patients from each group (BMS, ITN, PHN) and 60 healthy controls were evaluated with a systematized quantitative approach of thermal (cold and warm), mechanical, pain, gustation, olfaction and salivary flow; data were analyzed with ANOVA, Tukey, Kruskal Wallis and Dunn tests with a level of significance of 5%. RESULTS: There were no salivary differences among the groups with matched ages; the cold perception was abnormal only at the mandibular branch of PHN (P = 0.001) and warm was abnormal in all trigeminal branches of PHN and BMS; mechanical sensitivity was altered at the mandibular branch of PHN and in all trigeminal branches of BMS. The salty, sweet and olfactory thresholds were higher in all studied groups; the sour threshold was lower and there were no differences of bitter. CONCLUSION: All groups showed abnormal thresholds of gustation and olfaction; somesthetic findings were discrete in ITN and more common in PHN and BMS; central mechanisms of balance of sensorial inputs might be underlying these observations. PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to analyze the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) in a community sample from the city of Sao Paulo. METHODS: This epidemiological survey was conducted at a family health program in Sao Paulo, Brazil, using randomized sampling. Data were collected by interviewing residents and were analyzed by Pearson`s correlation coefficients, chi-square tests, and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Seventy (10.7%) of the 657 subjects currently presented UI, including 50.7% with sporadic UI and 74.3% with UI upon moderate efforts. Ninety-three percent woke up during the night, 43.7% maintained continence until the bathroom, 63.4% had a sensation of wetness, and 77.5% reported no use of any continence aids. Female gender, advanced age, gynecologic or urologic surgery, dysuria, and urinary tract infection were correlated with UI (P < .001; r(2) = 0.572). CONCLUSION: The overall prevalence of UI was found to be high and was comparable to results from multiple countries.
